Chapter 21: The Thrill of the Hunt Part 1
Raven was no stranger when it came to facing the darkness.
She was conceived by it.
Trained by it.
Consumed by it.
Even after learning to master it, there were just some parts that she could not face down.
The Darkness of her dreams seemed to haunt her the most as of late.
Even now it was calling out to her.
Surrounded by the overwhelming presence of it, Raven found herself standing in the middle of nowhere. Her only solace came in the form of a pathway illuminated which led to a brightly lit entrance. Although she wasn't sure what was happening in her mind, her ears soon became accustomed to the overwhelming sound of cheering.
Quickly but cautiously the sorceress inched down the pathway that was carved out for her. The closer she got to the entrance, the louder the cheers became. As she stepped into the final threshold, Raven mentally prepared herself for what could have been on the other side.
The skies burned with a hellish glow as a colosseum of terrors awaited Raven. In its massive form, the arena stood strong, housing millions of humanoid citizens. With cheers, laughter, and unyielding enjoyment, their attention was turned toward the center of the arena where a spectacle was taking place.
A lone woman lay on both knees as she struggled to catch her breath with everything going on. Raven let out a horrified gasp as she instantly recognized the person in question.
The woman had dirty blonde hair which was now caked with blood. She wore a leather jacket and fishnets that were sliced open from constant battle. As the woman's baby blue eyes were covered in shiners, she lifted her head weakly.
"Is that all you got?" Even with the odds against her, Dinah Lance refused to give in and promptly brought her body up to a standing position.
"I gotta give you credit Canary your even better than I'd expected!"
Raven's blood ran icy as she heard a familiar voice.
Its tone very much matched her own.
Goosebumps rippled throughout every inch of Raven's skin as the figure came to light to confront Dinah. The enemy had her face but lacked her heroic soul, instead, she choose a life of servitude to Darkside. Every muscle on Raven tensed up with aggravation as she observed her doppelganger Black Siren enter the fray.
"Finish her Siren!" As if seeing her evil twin wasn't enough, Raven heard the gravely voice of Darkseid pierce through the stadium stands. Sure enough, the emperor of Apokolips sat proudly on his throne, while Granny Goodness, Dessad, and the other Paragons watched eagerly at the deathmatch.
"Come on Siren, dust that birdie already!" Paragon Sparrow added with his vile encouragement.
"Rip her heart out!" Vipress quipped loudly.
"Come on get up, don't tell me you're tired already!" Mocked Black Siren as she stepped closer to her prey. "What would Ollie & Ted say if they saw you like this?"
"Fuck you bitch!" Just the mention of her late husband and mentor was enough to send Black Canary into action. Much like she did a thousand times before her jaw opened widely as her signature weapon the Canary Cry started to surge throughout the atmosphere.
While everyone else in the arena clutched their ears for dear life, Black Siren reacted just the opposite. Refusing to be pinned down by her opponent's powers she dashed around the area in a zig-zag motion allowing herself to avoid the destructive force of the attack.
The more she dodged, the louder Black Canary screamed. Despite feeling the burning pressure in her vocal cords, the heroine refused to give in to the grim fate that awaited her.
"Siren you idiot, the master gave you an order!" Granny Goodness screamed. "Stop playing around and kill Black Canary!"
"O-of course Granny!" A flare of embarrassment rushed across Black Siren's face as she was scolded by her elder. Up until now, the Paragon had no problem toying with the hero, but with her master watching closely, she had to stop grandstanding and finish the job.
As another wave of canary cry came at her, Black Siren opted for a different approach. Instead of dodging the attack like before, this time she ran directly into its overwhelming presence. Not bothering to cover her ears, Black Siren grunted in displeasure as she forced herself to block out the intense soundwaves.
The sudden change of tactics caught Black Canary off guard immediately. Before she could intensify her screaming powers, Black Siren was upon her. With a single outstretched hand, the Paragon dove at Canary's left leg and grasped it firmly.
With her enhanced strength Siren easily ripped off Canary's leg from her body.
The canary cry soon ceased as Dinah's entire body screamed out in unthinkable torment. As she fell over onto the hard ground, a waterfall of blood leaked from her leg socket while all she could do was wail in agony.
Powerless to fight back against the enemy, Dinah's face contorted fearfully as Black Siren now stood over her with the bloody leg. Holding it firmly as if it were a baseball bat, Black Siren gave one last evil snicker before she brought the weight of the severed limb down upon her.
Darkseid's smile reached far beyond normal means and the crowd went berserk as Siren began to beat Black Canary into submission with her own leg.
Raven's heart dropped into her stomach as she was forced to watch the spectacle unfold.
For every strike that landed, Dinah's body convulsed violently.
For every plea for mercy, there was a hit that was harder than the previous.
For every drop of blood spilled, Black Siren's grin grew as wide as her master's.
Raven couldn't take her eyes off what was happening. Her voice faded into the loud cheers of the crowd while her tears started to streak down just like the dying Dinah's.
It was one thing to witness the brutal murder of someone that you care for. It was another thing to see yourself commit the act.
The unspeakable things Black Siren did in her body.
All the destruction that she caused for Darkseid.
Even if she had no recollection of the events, just knowing that her body did this filled her with unrelenting guilt.
Guilt that she would never be able to escape.
Guilt that would scare her soul for eternity.
-Elsewhere-
Silence.
Eternally described as the complete absence of sound.
In these days silence had become an old friend to Paragon Vipress. Her fondness of it mostly came from having always traveled with the loud and rowdy men that made up her group.
Whether they were arguing over pool, cards, or whose stronger, their constant bickering annoyed Vipress to her very core.
It was at this point that she was lowkey grateful to Raven for destroying their hideout.
Without the Ace O' Clubs to act as their base of operations, the boys were off looking for a new place to call home.
This left Vipress in pure bliss as she was finally able to be on her own. In the sunlit pastures of a local park, the Paragon sat back in a single lawn chair. As she gradually took sips from an oversized martini glass, the woman had her entire attention focused on a pack of deer that were grazing not too far away.
Everything was so peaceful, so serene, she often wondered if she could stay like this forever.
"What the hell are you doing?"
Of course, it couldn't be that easy.
As a shadow cast itself over her lawn chair, Vipress couldn't help but look up. Standing over her now was Paragon Saber with his arms folded, while a deep look of disappointment was etched into his face.
"Well, aren't you looking just scrumptious!" Vipress cooed as her eyes started to roam all across Saber's muscular physique in his new outfit.
"I asked you a question Vipress." He retorted. "Why are you here and not enacting your plan?"
"Oh, come on Saber don't be that way, how about a kiss first?" Without warning Vipress found herself leaving the comfort of her chair and inching closer to meet her lips with his.
Although she had other things on her mind, Saber stood his steadfast serious self and grabbed her by the wrists to restrain her.
"Oooh going the rough route today, should I get my whip for this?" She questioned as she licked her lips in a seductive manner.
"Be serious will you!" He stoically said. "It's been four days and you still haven't told me how we're going to get Siren back or capture Moon Fang!"
"How about a little fun first then I'll tell you!"
"Vipress this is serious!"
"So are my hormones, come on just a few romps in the grass!"
"Listen to me!" He pleaded before shaking her sternly so that she would listen to what he had to say. "I need to know what the plan is, Sparrow and Taurus already failed and I don't want the same to happen to you!"
As the words seemingly left his lips, Vipress studied him closely before breaking out into a wicked grin.
"Why the hell are you smiling?"
"Because your cute, stupid but cute!" Breaking from the grip he had over her, Vipress took her spot back in her lawn chair to resume her relaxed state. "You're so worried about me screwing up you forgot one thing!"
A single raised eyebrow was the highlight of Saber's curiosity toward her. "And that would be?"
"I'm a hunter!" With little strength, Vipress unexpectedly crushed the martini glass with a single hand. As glass bits loitered now within her palm, she took it upon herself to betwixt a single shard between her index finger and her middle. Seemingly ignoring Saber next to her, Vipress narrowed her eyes as she focused on the still-feasting deer in the distance. "I don't need an army or the ship of a deceased brainchild to help me win."
"What then?"
"To get Moon Fang I merely need to attack him where it hurts the most, his heart!" She explained. "His weakness will satisfy my hunt immensely!"
"And in the end?" Saber asked
With the shard of glass still aimed at the deer, Vipress effortlessly flicked it in their direction. Like a boomerang soaring into the depths of the sunny outback, the projectile flew rapidly at its targets. The grazing deer were left wide open as the shard easily sliced open their necks with a single cut. From those cuts, the once graceful animals began to bleed out profusely before withering around the ground in a repeated motion of gasping for air.
"In the end, I'll crush him for good!" Vipress answered with a satisfied tone.
"Impressive." Saber finally admitted. He knew firsthand how deadly Vipress could be but seeing her craft in action made him realize that she was completely ready to undertake the mission at hand.
"It would be better if we could share the credit for when we take down Moon Fang." She stated."You still want to help me right?"
"Don't be stupid, you know I want to help you any way I can!"
"I'm so glad to hear you say that!" Walking toward a nearby bush, Vipress couldn't help but bat her eyelashes as she slowly began to undo the buttons that held her outfit together.
"W-w-what are you doing?"
Saber's face fell flush with embarrassment as he watched her pull off the dress in one swift motion. As the item of clothing was carelessly discarded away from her, Vipress hid her silky smooth skinned body behind the vegetation while never breaking eye contact.
"This isn't the time for that Vipress." Although his words were in protest, Saber's face fell flush as blood started to gather in a certain area on his body.
"It is if you want to know my plan!" She said. "I would hate to tell Darkseid that you refused to help me when I needed you the most."
Saber couldn't help but sweatdrop hard as she uttered the statement. "Blackmail seriously?"
"Think of it as some motivation, that way everyone gets what they want!" With her final decree spoken, Vipress sunk deeper behind the bushes as she awaited a response for him.
For Darkseid's glory, Saber would endure anything.
With a small smirk and shake off his head, he took seconds before removing all his clothing and allowing himself to be nude as her.
Vipress be damned.
Her lustful nature had overtaken his warrior spirit.
Although weak to his carnal desires, Saber knew in the long run that this would benefit him. If everything went according to plan, Vipress would easily bring down Moon Fang further securing the future for their master.
Whatever it takes Darkseid's will would be done.
Moon Fang would have no idea of the horrors that would await him soon.

-A Familiar City-
Sic Parvis Magna
A Latin phrase meaning, 'Thus great things come from small things.'
This had always been Gotham City's motto.
If you've lived here, however, you would always know that this was a lie.
Great things never came from Gotham.
Not now, not ever.
This city was a cesspool.
Overshadowed by darkness.
Stamped with violence.
Home to the world's worst criminals.
It was revelations like this that made Sojourner Mullein wonder why she stayed here. From her second-story office inside the GCPD headquarters, the detective once again found herself gazing beyond the windows. As her body remained in a comatose-like state her eyes were mesmerized by the amber sun which was steadily hurdling itself just over the horizon.
Sunlight was always so scarce in Gotham. You had to savor every moment before nightfall reared its ugly head. It was in these days that nighttime became more dangerous than it had ever been before.
No amount of childhood poverty, training in the army or two years as a beat cop in Chicago could have ever prepared her for this.
This wasn't the Gotham that many knew about previously.
This was a Gotham post-Apokolips War.
A Gotham that was now without Batman.
Even without the likes of Joker, Two-Face, Scarecrow, or the other rouges, Gotham was still at a fragile point. Murders, rapists, thieves, and every type of criminal scum you could think of were piling up more by the very minute.
Despite the GCPD growing in rank and numbers, Jo often wondered how this would play out.
Would the city eventually be safe for all to live in?
Even if it wasn't how long was she going to keep doing this?
She was still young and relatively healthy. She yearned for a romantic partner, a family, rest, and all things that were put on hold after Darkseid's attack.
Surely there had to be more to life than just busting bad guys and keeping the peace right?
"Jo!" A sharp feminine voice suddenly addressed her. Just hearing her name called was more than enough to snap her out of the trance she was in. Turning away from the window, Jo's attention was now pointed toward the entryway where a slender African American female in a GCPD uniform awaited her. Jo smiled as she instantly recognized the woman from around the force, she was known as Imani Jordan.
"Imani!" Jo's moment of happiness abruptly turned into embarrassment as she remembered the state the room was in.
Her office to say the least was a complete disaster.
To start several half-eaten containers of Chinese food were sprawled out all across her desk while numerous work papers and case files were littered all over the floor. A mountain of empty pop cans was overflowing in a nearby trashcan, while a pile of GCPD uniforms was piled up in a corner emitting an utterly foul smell.
As if her office wasn't already embarrassing her, Jo panicked more upon realizing that she hadn't put back on her uniform. Instead of being prepared for duty, she had bushy hair, boy shorts on, and an oversized cartoon shirt that covered most of her body.
"Oh my God Imani, I didn't know you were coming up!" Jo sweatdropped nervously before making a failed attempt to pick up the papers and trash on the floor.
"I tried calling but you didn't answer!" She replied
"Yeah sorry about that!" She squealed. "Got kind of caught up last night!"
"Let me guess more First Kill fanfiction on tales of our own?" She teased
"Heck no I'm saving that for my time off!" Jo laughed. "I was actually reading the reports on that Snakebite stuff we busted from the lounge, I got so caught up I just kind of fell asleep afterward."
"That's actually why I came up here!" She admitted. "Cobblepot's being brought up from lockup in twenty minutes, the commish wants you to be the one to interrogate him!"
"Twenty minutes seriously?" The state of her office and appearance suddenly came back to Jo prompting her to fly around. Within no time she began emptying the containers of leftovers and trying to prep her soiled suits for the wash. Interrogating Cobblepot was a huge deal for the department, especially after the recent bust. She had to be on her A game which meant having herself and her thoughts ready for the challenge.
"Jo calm down!" Imani ordered softly before she stepped in front of Jo to grab her by the shoulders. Now captive by Imani's firm but gentle grasp, the woman was now forced to look into her deep hazel eyes and ever bright smile that was plastered upon her face. "How about I clean up the office for you while you get dressed?"
Why the hell did she have to be so nice?
And beautiful.
And sexy.
And pure-hearted.
Jo had so many positive ways to describe Imani that it wasn't even funny. When she started working in this department five years ago, she wasn't sure how she was going to adapt. Moving from Chicago to Gotham was a big transition, to say the least, especially with the city's ever growing crime rate.
While her passion was always focused on the job at hand, she couldn't help but admit being lonely. When the commissioner partnered her with Imani all that changed. She went from being a solo detective to having someone in her corner. Although they had been working together for a few years, Jo always had the same feeling about Imani when she was close to her.
The redness of her cheeks, the rapid heartbeat, the butterflies in her stomach, all those feelings that perfectly captured a teenager having their first crush.
Even now Jo found herself being a bluttering idiot, unable to respond to Imani's kind gesture. Once again she found herself completely frozen in place, unable to stop herself from looking dreamily at her gorgeous features.
"Jo are you ok, you look a little flushed?" Imani asked as she tilted her head curiously.
"Uh-h-h-h I'm f-f-fine!" The nervousness finally reaching a breaking point, Jo got herself together and sprung away from Imani's purifying gaze. Inching herself to the other side of the room Jo regained her composure before grabbing an unknown duffle bag that was stationed next a small file cabinet. "Um thanks for cleaning this up for me Imani, I promise to make it up to you!"
"Well actually-." Imani began. "If you're ok with it, I was wondering if you'd like to go out on a date with me?"
"D-D-D-Date!" The question hit Jo with unyielding force, almost similar to a squirrel getting ran over by an eighteen-wheeler in the middle of a busy highway. The question's power alone was enough to shake Jo's senses, causing her to drop the duffle bag to the ground while it's contents went spiraling out toward the floor. Such contents included toiletries, a new uniform, and a single photograph.
"I know you're busy with this Snakebite case and all but I thought we could just go out and get to know-."
"Oh would you look at the time, I wouldn't want to keep the commissioner waiting maybe we could talk about this later Imani, I hope that's good, see ya later bye!" And with that, Jo scooped up what she could from the bag and rushed out the office, determined to not only get away from the embarrassing question but also to get on with her job at hand.
Imani couldn't help but shake her head discouragingly. She knew asking out Jo was going to be a hassle but she didn't figure it was going to be this difficult. It was really sad how she didn't even give her a chance to plead her case.
While her proposal attempt may have fell flat, Imani shook off the rejection in order to regain her positive nature. Even though Jo had ran out on her, she would do the helpful thing and clean the pig stye of an office.
She would first start with the photograph that fell out of Jo's duffle bag. Picking it up off the ground, Imani attempted to return it to the desk. Her happy mood instantly turned depressive as she viewed the contents of the photo that Jo had been keeping.
The photograph displayed another African American Woman, who was just as equally beautiful. She looked to be in her twenties, with a slender body, generous bust, chocolate eyes, and silky black hair that was midway down her back. While wearing an assortment of pride-colored gear, the woman gave a wide grin while flashing a peace sign.
Looking toward the back of the photograph, Imani couldn't help but read a single inscription that was surrounded by a gigantic heart.
Had a fantastic day at Pride.
Looking forward to next year and many more adventures with you
Love you always

-Ryan
Ryan Wilder.
Imani knew her all too well.
Jo talked about her constantly. It was always a story about how they met, how much fun they had going places, or even how much they had in common. Beyond this, Imani was constantly bombarded with Jo saying how much she missed Ryan since relocating to Gotham permanently.
It was hard to imagine that a woman she never met was her number one rival for Jo's affection.
Needless to say, this photograph would not faze her in any shape or form.
Pocketing the picture, Imani restarted the office cleaning. So she would have to work a little harder for Jo's affection, it would definitely be worth it in the end.
Now that she thought about it, Ryan wasn't even a rival as long as she stayed in New Metropolis.

COUNTDOWN INITIATED!

"You sure you guys are ready for this?" Although Ryan Choi and his scientific smarts were at the helm of the Batcomputer, even he felt a little bit uneasy operating such a complicated piece of machinery without Ryan there to guide him.
EIGHT!
"Don't sweat it RC, me and Lunar got this locked down!" Replied a confidant Moon Fang.
Standing just a few feet away from the Batcomputer, the Paragon began with a series of stretches to get his body adjusted to the usual heavy weight of his armor.
"I'm ready friend, my circuits are sparking with excitement!" Lunar chirped from his usual space inside the armor.

"Ok guys just handle the foes in your way and I've got a special surprise at the very end of the platform!"

BATCAVE DEFENSE PROTOCOL ACTIVATED
That was the signal that Moon Fang had been waiting for.
Without warning he suddenly found himself leaping off the platform and downward. Gravity pressed spitefully against the weight of the Paragon armor as it brought Moon Fang toward the lower platforms that made up the Batcave.
"Sensors detecting Batcave drones incoming!" The computerized screen lit up inside the armor displaying Moon Fang as a single blue dot soon becoming surrounded by a wave of enemy red dots.
"Let's wrack um up little buddy!" As he was free-falling, Moon Fang drew for one of the weapon cogs that were stationed inside his belt. Swiftly inserting it into his bracelet, the Paragon braced himself as his personal weapon the dual chakrams materialized.
Now equipped for combat the Paragon landed heavily against the surface of the platform making a crushing dent as he did so. The minute that he landed his optics caught sight of the robotic drones that resembled live vampire bats. With their mechanical fluttering wings and high-pitched cries, the drones opened their jaws while unleashing fierce laser blasts.
Digging his heels deep into the dirt, Moon Fang contorted his body out of the way as the lasers barely missed hitting him. The minute that he had an opening, he fought back with a single swing of his weapons. Although the drones began to fly away from the attack, the Chakrams' homing nature pursued them. One by one the Chakrams easily slashed through the drone's bodies, causing them to simply explode on contact.
"Not bad Gar, not bad at all!" From Ryan Choi's position, he could easily see Moon Fang decimate the drones without breaking a sweat.
"Told ya we would ace this!" After slicing through the remains of the drones Moon Fang leaped onto a secondary platform that was even lower into the Batcave.
Hitting the dirt like he did before the Paragon flexed his muscles like an Hollywood action star as he prepared himself to face the next wave of foes. Instead of going against Batcave droids like he did before he was in for something much more different. On this platform were three oversized mecha armors similar to an Optimus Prime model. The mechas proudly had the Bat logo stamped on their chest as they each wielded a set of melee weapons.
"How should we clobber these tin heads Lunar?"
"Ooh Ooh, can you do the punch like the hawk guy from that video game we were playing?"
"Ohh you mean the Falcon Punch!" Garfield found himself grinning from ear to ear inside the armor as his companion made the suggestion.
Not waiting to be slaughtered each of the mecha armors soon began advancing at a fast rate toward Moon Fang.
Doing his best Bruce Lee Kung Fu scream, Moon Fang soon took an offensive stance. Focusing inwardly the Paragon summoned cosmic energy toward his fist which began to grow larger with each second that went by.
"TIGER PUNCH!" Once enough energy had gathered Moon Fang declared his attack before launching his first forward. Baked by the immense cosmic power the paragon was launched forward while his single first started to rip through each of the mecha's that challenged him. Just like Captain Falcon in Smash Bros, Moon Fangs so-called 'Tiger Punch' was more than enough to finish the enemies that stood in his way.
"Seriously?" Ryan Choi Sweatdropped. "Declaring your attack, that's so nineties!"
"Call it what you want but it's fun!"
"Hey, what happened to the surprise you promised us?" Lunar curiously asked.
"Yeah, smartypants were busting our butts down here!"
"Check the edge it should be there!"
Scanning the rest of the platform, Moon Fang's sensors picked up the sight of a single steel table that had been stationed right near the edge. As the Paragon got closer to the table, he was greeted to the sight of two items he had never seen before in his life.
The first of the two items was a scarlet red box that resembled a first aid kit while the second was a carbon steel Samurai Sword.
"What are these things?"
"An EMP box once belonging to Red Tornado and the Katana Blade used by Ghostmaker when he fought crime."
"This is the surprise?" Lunar wondered with a saddened tone. "I was hoping for goodies, maybe some new toys!"
"I'm with Lunar on this one, you could have at least sprung for donuts or something!"
"There will be time for food later!" He said. "Right now I need you to focus your gauntlet on those things!"
"Gauntlet, you mean this watch thingy?" Moon Fang couldn't help but eye the gauntlet weapon that he never used in combat before.
"Yes that's the one. Press three, three, five, and scan the items!"
"What's that supposed to do anyway?"
"Trust me you'll love what happens!"
Moon Fang shrugged off Ryan Choi's explanation and instantly followed suit. Pressing the command on the keyboard with ease, the computerized gauntlet sprung to life as a miniature blue light started to emit from it. Following the instructions given, Moon Fang bathed the EMP Box and Katana in the light for a mere ten seconds before it stopped totally.
"Alright, I did it now what?"
"Check your belt!"
"Why do i need to-." Moon Fang couldn't even get the words out as an unexpected shine engulfed the cog belt. Opening it slowly, Moon Fang stood in awe as two silver cogs suddenly materialized next to the others."DUDE!"
"Holy cow!" Lunar gasped as his surprise mimicked Garfield's.
"Say hello to your two newest weapon cogs Moon Fang!"
"How did you, where did you, hows is this-?"
"Look don't overload yourself on the questions just yet." Ryan Choi explained. "The only thing I know is Batman retweaked Lunar's computer system. I've been doing a lot of research into it, and some program Lunar has in him allows him to copy certain abilities based on objects that were left behind by their owners.
"You didn't tell me you could do that Lunar!" Garfield exclaimed.
"I'm just as surprised as you are friend!" He replied.
"I'm still doing my research around it, but it does explain how Lunar was able to replicate the cosmic staff after eating the belt on Stargirl's costume !" He began again. "Not all but certain items that Lunar eats or scans via the Paragon armor can make a new weapon for you to use!"
"Two new weapons huh!" Moon Fang uttered as he took them out of his belt to admire them. While he wasn't sure what kind of weapons these little gadgets would bring, Moon Fang's mind went awry as he thought of what devastation he could bring against Darkseid. "Can we test them out!"
"I wouldn't not yet!" Ryan Choi interjected. "I don't know what those cogs can do yet, and I haven't fully finished going over the Paragon armor schematics, you might want to hold off until I read into it a bit more!"
"If you say so RC!" He stated.
"Can we train some more, I'm just getting worked up."
"I guess we can Lunar, that ok with you RC?"
"Yup yup, loading up some more enemies now!"
-Wayne Manor–
-Backyard-
-Hedge Maze-
"Azarath Metrion Zinthos, Azarath Metrion Zinthos, Azarath Metrion Zinthos." From the time she was a child Raven had been taught to use the incantations of the Azarathian Monks.
Being a pacifist society they urged Raven to always meditate on these three words before she undertook any task that life had thrown at her. It was always the heat of battle when she used these words the most, however, now was not the time for a physical fight.
This was a fight for her very soul.
This was why Raven stationed herself in the hedge maze in the back of Wayne Manor.
Surrounded by Tennis Courts, fresh flowing fountains, and beautiful flowers, Raven knew this was the perfect environment to get some alone time. It wouldn't be long before Garfield returned to check on her, so now would be the best time for her to gather all her thoughts in one place.
"Azarath Metrion Zinthos, Azarath Metrion Zinthos!" The words continued to flow easily from her mouth while her mind reached into the darkness that was nevermore. "Azarath Metrion Z-."
"Stop it!" The angry voice of Black Siren erupted in Raven's mind causing her to cease her meditation.
Hearing the voice of her counterpart caused the gemstone on Raven's head to glow bright with magical energy. The sorceress clutched her head while wailing in agony as she was assaulted by a flashing image of her foe.
"You can't hold me back forever Raven!" In Nevermore Black Siren stood on a single rocky platform looking up into the sky as if it were Raven's face. "I will get out of here!"
Kneeling in the dirt, Raven did her best to block out the words of Siren as magical power started to cover her aura. "No, I won't let you, Azarath Metrion Zinthos!"
"You can't hide the things you've done Raven!" She taunted. "These are just as much your sins as they are mine!"
"Shut up, Azarath Metrion Zinthos!"
Calling upon the powers of her people once more, a mystical wave of black energy released itself from Raven's body and all around the atmosphere. The magical power was swift as it lashed out at multiple targets nearby.
"You haven't won yet Raven, I will return!" Was Black Siren's last words as her phantom body dissolved into the darkest reaches of her mind.
Raven's chest burned with a panicked sensation while her heart slammed into her ribcage repeatedly. Although most of her headache had subsided, she could hear a faint ringing still in the background.
"What have I done?" She uttered to herself. Looking around the property Raven got a first-hand glimpse of what her powers had done.
The massive fountains that were stationed around the hedge maze had been crushed into bits allowing water and stone pebbles to litter as far as the eye can see. The fancy Tennis courts had been ripped from their solid foundations and tossed in numerous directions all over the manor grounds. Finally, the bushes with trimmed trees and flowers had been incinerated leaving a massive trail of stems and ash that blew in the breeze.
"Oh my God Raven!"
The Sorceress froze in place as she heard her name being called out. Turning behind her she observed Ryan Wilder standing in the driveway leading to the backyard. With her hand full of grocery bags, Ryan violently dropped them to the ground before rushing over to be at Raven's side.
Raven found herself biting her lower lip in frustration as Ryan began to help her up. While she was grateful to have the assistance, Raven clamored inward realizing that Ryan saw everything and somehow she would have to explain to her what happened.
-Nearby-
"Looks like Siren's way ahead of us!" Ryan wasn't the only one who bore witness to the events surrounding Raven's struggle against Black Siren. Unbeknownst to them in a nearby tree, the duo was being stalked by the likes of Vipress and Saber.
"Raven is a fool if she thinks her magic can withstand Black Siren's powers!"
"Whatever the case this adds an interesting layer!" Vipress commented. "This will make my hunt even more pleasurable now that I think about it!"
"I still don't understand why we just can't attack them now!"
"Bruce Wayne probably has that placed bobbie trapped with all sorts of weapons, plus I'd hate to escalate a head-on battle with Moon Fang so soon!" She explained. "We only need to watch them for now, I have no doubt will get a perfect opportunity to strike soon!"
"For both our sakes I hope your right!"

A fresh shower, a new uniform, and a fog of perfume were the correct elements needed to rejuvenate Jo to her fullest. Now in a new frame of mind, Jo felt ready to take on the world. This would be the attitude she would need to keep as she made her way from the ladies' locker room and down toward the basement of the building.
She made sure to keep her pacing fast as she slinked through the mountain of cops, reporters, and handcuffed criminals that were loitering in each and every inch of the building. In a short span of time, Jo found herself at the door leading to one of their biggest interrogation rooms.
With a one-way window lurking next to the door, Jo couldn't help but peer through the glassy surface. Waiting for her arrival was a suited man who looked to be in his early thirties. The man was Caucasian, had a thin body, baby blue eyes, and platinum blonde hair that was combed neatly to one side of his head. The man conveyed a rather bored expression while fiddling with the set of handcuffs that kept him bound to the table he was at.
"Alright, Jo this is it." She murmured to herself.
Taking one last final breath the officer prepared herself as she grasped the doorknob firmly in her hand. In one swift motion, Jo had left the busyness of the GCPD public and was now into the silenced area that was the interrogation room. "Sorry to keep you waiting MR Cobblepot."
"Detective Mullien my this is a surprise!" From the moment that Jo entered the room, the figure immediately straightened his posture while keeping both eyes pinned directly on her. "As always your beauty is a beacon on this desolate city."
"It's a little early for flattery isn't it MR Cobblepot?" Jo couldn't help but return a small smile as she questioned him. Despite being the one to make the arrest, Cobblepot seemed to harbor no ill feelings toward her. It was actually the opposite, he seemed to be intrigued by her almost like a Rubix cube that needed to be assorted correctly. His constant curiosity would also lead him to flirt with her every time he had an opening.
Although Jo had to keep her mind on the job at hand, even she couldn't help resist cracking a few smiles every now and then. Whenether the flirtation was genuine remained to be seen, but whatever the case Jo would not let it get in her way.
"Now MR Cobblepot-."
"Oh please detective don't be so formal, call me Ethan everyone that I like does!"
"Alright, Ethan!" Taking the table on the opposite side of him, Jo's attention went toward the oversized manila envelope that was stationed atop the desk. Marked with a set of instructions from the commissioner, Jo divulged into the papers one at a time carefully scanning the contents.
"Any idea when the boys in blue are going to let me go?" He asked. "I am a busy man after all."
"I guess chemical distribution really does keep you busy!" Jo was firm in her statement as she took an object out of the envelope and slid it across the table to him. Ethan's eyes narrowed to a small crisp white box with a snake emblem printed on top. To further make her point, Jo removed the covering revealing a small injector with green liquid inside."How is the Snakebite business treating you?"
"Snakebite?" He inquired
"We seized thousands of these little boxes from a heavily armored truck outside your nightclub!" She began."One of those guards on board said this stuff was called Snakebite!"
The corner of Ethan's lips couldn't help but twitch as he already knew what direction this was going in.
"Care to explain?"
"Explain what detective?"
"I wanna know what this stuff is!" Jo exclaimed. "Must have been very important to have been guarded so closely!"
"Surely you can't possibly think!" Clutching a set of imaginary pearls, Ethan's expression mimicked that of a Hollywood Starlet going in for an academy award.
Although trying her best to maintain her composure, Jo's nostrils couldn't help but flare in response to him. The arrogant side of Ethan was starting to rear its ugly head.
"The Commissioner must really have it out for me this time!" He replied. "She's had you tailing me for months."
"I haven't-."
"Don't bother lying detective, I saw through all those disguises every time you were in my club undercover!" A wide grin emerged as he started his tirade. "I must say you are committed to your craft, but in the end, you fall short of any actual evidence!"
"I have photographs, the chemicals, and a whole cell full of guys who said they were delivering the shipment to you!"
"Means nothing!" Ethan explained. "Detective although my father left me the Iceberg Lounge I can assure you I'm much too busy running VicForm to care about it. Your best bet would be to investigate my staff as they probably have more interest in ruining my good name than they are doing their jobs!"
"You expect me to believe a bunch of waitresses are running a shady operation behind your back?"
"Your evidence at best is circumstantial." He stated with a crooked smile. "Surely you can see a dilemma in bringing this in front of a judge let alone a Jury!"
"Well make it stick!" She exclaimed as her demeanor started to garner anger. "We know you're in on this Ethan, and we won't stop until we've kept Gotham safe!"
Ethan bit his lower lip before fixing Jo a single lustful eye. "You know you're really sexy when you get mad?"
"Stop that!" Despite scolding him, Jo's mahogany skin felt flush flush as it started to take the color of crimson. "No games Ethan I wanna know about that Snakebite shipment!"
He shrugged nonchalantly as the accusation was brought upon him again. "I'm afraid I can't help you detective, I'm in the dark just as much as you are!"
His constant pleas for innocents only annoyed Jo. Abruptly the detective found herself snatching the Snakebite box, and the manila envelope before deciding to exit the interview room.
Her tactics weren't working, while she hated to leave so soon she needed to get some help. Perhaps a small conversation with the commissioner would help her find a way around his lies.
-Elsewhere-
While Jo was left to be frustrated with Ethan's denials, it was at this very moment that a lone stretch limousine began its journey through the outskirts of the city. Weaving swiftly through the heavy traffic that covered most of the highway, the limo made its way toward a large green sign welcoming them into Gotham.
"How I loathe this city!" These were the first and only words that Enigma had spoken since she Roman, Mary and Liam had left the brightly lit city of New Metropolis. Shifting uncomfortably against the leather seats, the woman could not help but make childish faces as they began to pass through the buildings. "Honestly Roman of all the places that we could be, why'd we have to end up in Gotham?"
"I'm with the doc on this one!" Poison Mary stated. "Where's all the greenery, this city is so bleh!"
"I concur, Gotham is definitely far from Wonderland." Liam added.
"Look I know moving our operation was unexpected but it's necessary." Roman assured.
"You still haven't told us how we're going to free Ethan!"
"I'll leave the details up to you Consuler!"
"Consuler?" Enigma raised a single eyebrow in suspicion.
"It took some doing but an associate of mine managed to cover up your involvement at the Detention Center!" He explained. "As far as those pigs at GCPD are concerned, your now Evelyn Rhyme attorney at law."
"What about us MR Sionis?" Liam asked
"Yeah does this mean we get to take on those Outsiders we've been hearing so much about?"
Poison Mary also inquired with excitement.
"All in due time, for now, I've got a special project that I want you two to work on with Margot!"
"Margot?"
"Don't worry you'll know her when you see her!" He reassured.
"While we're busy having all this fun where are you going to be?" Enigma sarcastically quizzed.
"I've got an important luncheon with the commissioner, don't worry though the work on my end will benefit us in the long run!"
I sure hope your right, the sooner we get out of this cesspool the better!"
"Patience Enigma, in fact by the time we're done with this place you may change your tone!"

-Kitchen-
"How long have you been having these nightmares?" This was the most pointed question that Ryan could ask Raven. After retrieving her friend from the chaos of the Hedge Maze, Ryan retreated to the kitchen knowing she would need peace. While Raven stationed herself at the table, Ryan retrieved the shopping bags she had dropped in the driveway and was just beginning to put them away.
"Since we defeated Brainiac." She admitted. "At first I thought the dreams were just me not meditating enough, then I realized she was still in Nevermore!"
"How though?" Ryan questioned. "I thought you were free from Black Siren's hold over you."
"I'm not sure but she's getting stronger, I need to figure out how to fix this!"
The conversation would be interrupted by the screeching of the tea kettle on the stove. Retrieving two glasses from a nearby cupboard, Ryan poured dual drinks before taking a seat next to her friend.
"Thanks!" The Sorecress complimented as she gratefully took the tea and began taking light sips.
"Alright so new plan we tell Garfield, maybe take you to Highfather see what-."
"No!" Raven abruptly interjected as her eyes seemingly popped out her head. "Don't tell Garfield!"
"Hold up, what do you mean don't tell Garfield?" Ryan inquired with a rather perplexed look on her face.
"Look I just don't want to worry him!"
"Are you nuts?" She scolded. "Your practically Jekyl and Hyde right now and yet you don't wanna tell him!"
While Raven knew that Ryan spoke the truth, she couldn't allow Garfield to know. It was during their five-year separation that her boyfriend almost went to pieces, each of his days spent yearning after their lost love. Although she had only been back for a short time, Garfield rarely left her side. Similar to a wad of gum under her boot, Garfield stuck around constantly. It wasn't in the clingy sense but rather more protective, each day Garfield found himself seemingly making up for the time that they had lost.
With Raven back around he was more hopeful, and more optimistic that they could win a war against Darkseid. Raven would never tell him the truth about this, just the thought of possibly losing her could not only destroy his mindset but could also affect their future in this fight.
It pained her not to be able to share her problems with her boyfriend, but it ultimately was for the best. She would not worry him and hopefully find a solution before it overtook her.
"You're his best friend!" Raven began. "You've protected him more times I can count, I need you to do that now!"
"It's not that simple!" Ryan bellowed. "He has a right to know what's going on with you!"
"Look I'll tell him but just not now, not when everything has been going so good!"
"Seriously Raven, this is your life we're talking about!"
"Look I can't force you to do this but I'd advise you to think about what would happen if he knew!"
"Snack Time!"
Before Ryan could even speak her next thoughts the girls overheard the loud squeals of Garfield & Lunar coming from the next room. Sure enough, the duo alongside Ryan Choi came barreling into the kitchen at an unsafe speed.
"Ryan, Raven!" A melodious laugh escaped from Lunar's mouth as he became the first one to enter. With his small but quick frame, the tiger cub dashed back and forth between the girls making sure to snuggle up against them.
"Hey Lunar!" Turning her attention to the piparoid Ryan greeted him with a firm single hand that petted the soft fur on his back. Enjoying the sensation of being petted, Lunar closed his eyes while purring softly.
"I still can't believe Gar has a mini-me!" Raven teased.
While the sorceress may have been trying to segway the conversation in a differnt direction, Ryan couldn't stop herself from mouthing the words 'Were not done talking about this'.
As if the energetic Lunar wasn't enough Garfield finally entered the kitchen with Ryan Choi walking squarely behind him.
"Rae!"
Catching the sight of his beloved Garfield dashed across the room placing himself beside her. Before Raven could even get up t greet him she was swept off her feet literally. Garfield hoisted her bridal style before engaging her with the deepest kiss he could muster. While the action was unexpected and caught Raven off guard, she didn't fight his affection and eventually leaned into his advances.
"Hey let's keep it PG, there are children watching!" Ryan Choi joked as he covered Lunar's eyes to keep him from witnessing the PDAs.
"I thought I was a piparoid?" Lunar querIed.
"You heard him Gar either get a room or get cameras so I can sell tickets!" Ryan laughed
"Sorry, folks just got caught up in the moment!" Grinned the changeling as he finally relented, giving Raven a chance to come up for air.
"Your embarrassing, ya know that!" Raven smirked
"You know you love it!" He said before placing her back down on the ground.
"Well, I guess since everyone's here I can tell you the good news!" Ryan began. Going for one of the shopping bags still left on the counter the Afro-woman surprised everyone as she pulled out four purple ticket stubs. "I got us all tickets for Vinyl tonight!"
"Vinyl?" Raven inquired. "You mean that pointless anime nightclub in the Tomorrow District?"
"Yup yup, that's the one!"
"Seriously that's awesome!" Garfield shouted. "How'd you get the tickets though, isn't that place for the mega-rich?"
"Knowing Kate Kane has it's benefits!"
"I don't know Ryan, nightclubs and me just aren'ta thing!" Raven stated.
"Me neither, plus I got more research to do into the paragon armor!" Ryan Choi added
"All that can wait, we all deserve a night to relax for once!" She expressed.
"But-."
"No buts were going to party now let's see if we can find some outfits to wear!"
Before Ryan Choi could protest any further, Ryan ushered him into the next room and up the stairs going toward the direction of his room.
"Hey guys wait for me, this nightclub stuff sounds like a lot of fun!" As Lunar decided to follow the two Ryan's this now left Garfield and Raven in the kitchen by themselves.
"So can we go?" This was the first question Garfield asked Raven when they were alone. To further plead his case, he made use of a set of sad eyes and a pouted lip. "You know you can't resist the face."
Raven comically snorted as she stared at his face. "You'd have a better chance of teaching Lunar how to do that face!"
"Hey I'm doing the best I can!" He replied. "But please Rae can't we go?"
"I guess we could check it out since she already went through the trouble!"
"This is awesome!" Garfield cheered before planting another kiss on Raven's lips."In fact this gives me a great idea!"
"What idea?" Raven asked.
"I can't share it with you yet but just know your gonna love it!"
Without warning Garfield gave Raven a small hug before he ejected himself from the room to locate the others.
Whatever clever idea he had would stay between him and him only for now.
Now that he was gone Raven resumed her place at the table to drink the tea that was made for her. As she resumed sips on the beverage, Raven couldn't help but replay the early conversation she had with Ryan.
Her psyche would now annoy her as she dwelled on whether or not she made the right decision.
-Highfather's Tower-
-Conference Room-
"I still can't believe someone actually fucked Eddie!" The declaration much like Deadshot's personality was unfiltered and brazen. Catwoman found herself seizing her typing on the council room computer while Superman could sign in discomfort at his words.
Selena couldn't help but roll her eyes before returning to her technical work. "Could you be any more crude?"
"Come on ya know we were all thinking it!" He shrugged innocently. "A guy that obsessed with riddles either had to be a virgin or deep in the closet finding presents!"
"I guess even Eddie couldn't deny his little head for very long!" Selena added.
"Any luck on the footage?" Superman questioned as he hijacked the conversation of the deceased Riddler and back to the job at hand.
"Hold your horses boy scouts I'm checking!" Much like that of an expert hacker, Selena's fingers heavily and rapidly went across the computer inputting a long list of commands. As she was to accomplish this, Superman and Deadshot kept their attention trained to a video feed that was playing.
The video showcased two heroes, Robotman & Negativeman. At the beginning of the video, the two Doom Patrol members were helping clean up the debris left over from Brainiac's invasion. While the video started off seemingly normal and uneventful, its feed soon turns pitch black while the screams of the two heroes could be heard in the background.
"Still nothing." Selena pouted all the while tossing the keyboard just a few inches away from her.
"I don't get it!" Deadshot said. "Cliff & Larry have been missing for days now, why aren't we out there looking for them?"
"Look Flyod I want to find them as much as you do but we don't even know where to begin." Superman explained sternly. "This video feed might be the only clue we have to even know where to begin."
"What about Steve and Rita, or maybe even Garfield and the others we could always use the extra manpower to search?"
Catwoman found herself sighing heavily upon hearing her comrades mentioned.
"What did I say something wrong?"
"Steve's out on another one of his drinking binges and Rita's still recovering from her injuries." Superman replied. "As far as Garfield goes, Rita asked us not to alert him she wants him to be able to spend time with Raven and keep his mind on whatever Darkseid is planning."
"So once again it's just us picking up the slack!"
"Shut it, Floyd, nobody wants to hear you complain!"
"But-."
"No buts we've got enough on our plates already without you bellyaching!"
Deadshot was set to fire off one of his usual witty remarks at Catwoman but found himself cut off as a separate tab opened up on the computer screen. The trio gave each other perplexed glances as a video feed was opened up, such feed would broadcast a live stream of their comrade Ice.
"Ice!" Superman exclaimed. From the other side of the broadcast, the three could see that she was surrounded by a multitude of Star Labs scientists who were busy working on other projects.
The minute that she was in viewing range, Ice immediately turned her attention to Catwoman before beginning an unknown series of words in sign language.
"What's she saying, Selena?"
"She says Star Labs was able to restore the distorted video feed for us like we asked." She began. "She says that there's something we need to see on it asap!"
"Alright send it over!"
"Send it over Ice!" Selena commanded with her lips as well as the appropriate sign language for her friend.
The minute that Ice got the signal from them she turned her attention toward the Star Labs scientists who were busy working on their own computer sets. Fiddling around on the keyboard for a few moments, a third tab opened up playing the missing section of the video.
"Oh, my God!" Selena's mouth dropped wide, her expression becoming increasingly horrified by every second.
"How the fuck is that possible?" A startled Deadshot questioned
Superman's expression was very unreadable as he struggled to form the words needed. "K-Kara?"
Sure enough, the video had shown what really happened.
It showcased Robotman & Negativeman battling the forces of one deceased Supergirl.
The two heroes were fighting valiantly against the Kryptonian only to be bested by her superior strength and fighting prowess. The encounter would last only a few minutes but would end abruptly as Supergirl turned her heat vision on the camera that was watching the entire scene.
-Apokolips-
What is pain?
Some see it as the point of physical suffering.
While others see it as discomfort that disrupts everyday human life.
These were definitions that Bruce Wayne never agreed with.
To him, pain was much more than that.
Pain is being a helpless child.
Pain is seeing death cloaked in darkness with a single gun.
Pain is bullet after bullet piercing through bodies as if they were made of paper.
Pain is the awful sound of screams that repeat in your mind daily.
Pain is watching your loved ones lay lifeless in rivers of blood.
Pain is never being able to heal from the trauma.
Such pain is why Bruce donned the mask.
Such pain is why he battled evil night after night.
Such pain is why he broke bones, left scars, and haunted the dreams of criminals.
Such pain empowered him to protect not just Gotham but the entire world.
When he became the Bat, that symbol he vowed never to let pain scar his soul deeply again.
Such a vow would be broken at the hands of Dessad.
Bruce's hands had gone past the point of being numb. The spikes in his restraints while small cut deep into his wrists allowing fresh blood to trickle down his skin every few minutes. His legs were equally bloody as his shackles were literally cutting into his ankle bones.
Glowering, he blinked past the burning sweat that ran down from his forehead as he began to analyze the room.
This was the third time tonight he had been brought into Dessad's laboratory.
Such transfer could only mean another round of torture was awaiting him.
"You should be honored, MR Wayne!" Right on cue, Dessad stepped into focus having been hidden. Even through the darkness of his hood Bruce could see a devilish glee on his face as he carried an unknown device that resembled a hot glue gun. "Thanks to your resilience, I'm forced to try out some of my more unknown toys!"
Bruce attempted to speak only to be stopped by the assault of Cottonmouth that overtook him. He had been deprived of water for almost four days while being kept alive thanks to Apokolyptian drugs. Without proper hydration from his home planet, Bruce was too dry to speak or put up a fight against his captors.
"Since you have no objections, let us begin the process!"
Dessad would never get the chance to begin his torture routine however as a small alarm bellowed from up above. Bruce knew that alarm all too well, its signal always meant the same thing which would mean more trouble for him.
Dessad had mere seconds to step to the side before the lab doors were thrust open.
The entire lab quaked with tense vibrations as the footsteps heavily stomped into the room. Dessad humbled kneeled toward the ground as his master Darkseid stepped into his domain.
"Welcome master," Dessad said
But Darkseid could not even be bothered to address his minion. His eyes were brightly lit with the Omega color as he kept his attention on his hostage. Unable to look away, Bruce suppressed his emotions as the tyrant slowly made his way toward him.
This had not been Bruce's first encounter with Darkseid since he was brought to Apokolips. Strangely enough, Darkseid visited every time Bruce had succeded in withstanding Dessad's methods. While the methods of torture on this planet were certainly unique, Darkseid was not pleased that a mere human was able to endure them.
"Dessad!" He addressed his minion sharply. "I grow tired of waiting, when will you make this worm submit?"
"I'm sorry for the delay excellency, but this human is more resilient than I gave him credit for!"
"Apologies and excuses will not be tolerated!" Darkseid snapped back before firing off a warning shot of Omega laser toward the floor. "I will have Project Nova realized or you will face execution by the furies!"
"But of course master, this time he will submit to your will!"
"I will break you, Batman!" Darkseid grunted toward the captive hero. "Once you have fallen, I will capture that fool Moon Fang bask in the glow of Anti-Life!"
"I'm ready to begin again master!"
Stepping out of the way, Darkseid stood quietly as Dessad approached Bruce with the device which was now emitting a lava-like substance from its tip.
Biting his lower lip in anguish, Bruce closed his eyes in preparation for the onslaught of torture that was sure to begin. Even though Darkseid stare him down, Bruce was ready to face the challenge.
Even through the pain he had to remain strong.
He couldn't show fear, he couldn't show weakness, he couldn't let Darkseid know he was succeding.
He was Batman, he couldn't give up.
For Clark and everyone else counting on him he had to keep on his fearless mirage.
