Chapter 1

Moonwatcher

Moon walked through a forest she didn't know. It was dark and gloomy but a peaceful quiet moved through the trees. A shadow moved across her view of the trees surrounding her.

"Hello?" she spoke quietly.

"Who are you?" a quiet whispering voice said back. Then a loud scream rang out and Moon doubled over by the sound.

"Moon. Moon get up," a claw prodded Moon awake.

Moon opened her eyes, seeing a young bright Rainwing in her face. "What is it Kinkajou?"

"You were talking in your sleep again." Kinkajou said worriedly. "Something about dragons far away in danger. I don't know."

"Sorry for waking you." Moon rubbed her eyes.

"I was awake already. Now that we have this one week break I figured I'd get up as soon as I can." Kinkajou jumped, forgetting about Moon's dreams, "I think I'll head to the library today! Want to come with?"

"Sure," Moon yawned. She got up and stretched. Moon's internal clock let her know it was early morning. The sun must have risen a little bit ago.

Kinkajou waited for Moon to catch up with her at the cave entrance. Moon walked close to her friend as they both walked to the Library. Most dragonets were asleep taking their off time as they wanted. A few were up and in their caves getting ready for the day. Moon looked at the globes hanging from the ceiling. Colors from violet to orange made the cave system light up.

As they entered the library Starflight stood up. "Hi Starflight!" Kinkajou chirped as they walked up to the blind librarian.

"Hi Kinkajou. Is Moon with you?" Starflight touched his desk.

"Hi Starflight," Moon said quietly.

"You wouldn't happen to have the scroll I asked for the other day, would you?" Kinkajou said. "I want to start reading as soon as possible."

"Yes," Starflight nodded. "It's right here." He turned to the shelf, grabbing a scroll off of it.

"Thanks Starflight!" Kinkajou grabbed it and walked over to a cushion to sit on.

"Can I get anything for you Moon?" Starflight turned to where Moon was.

"Yes. I was actually wondering if you've ever heard of something. I don't know what it means." Moon spoke quietly. "Or if it's something. Grairokora. I've never heard of it before."

Starflight's face deepened. "Where'd you hear that?"

"I don't remember." Moon thought about it.

Starflight shook his head. "It's a myth. Nothing more."

"What is it?" Moon asked.

"It's supposedly another continent." Starflight grabbed the scroll off his desk, moving them to the shelf. "But like I said. It's a myth."

"Didn't we think Pantala was a Myth." Kinkajou spoke loudly from her spot.

Moon and Starflight looked to where she was. "Yes but we have proof it exists now." Starflight said. "I'm one to believe, but Grairokora. If our ancestors lived there we would have known about it."

"Our ancestors?" Moon questioned.

"Yes," Starflight dropped a scroll. "It is said there is a tribe on Grairokora that we all evolved from. Whether I believe that or not won't change." He picked it up and placed it on the shelf.

"Well," Kinkajou bounded up to them. "If it hasn't been found yet it will. It's just a matter of time."

"Shouldn't you two be outside enjoying your time off?" Starflight changed the subject.

"Yeah we should!" Kinkajou jumped up. "Come on. I want to show you a berry patch I found the other day." She tugged at Moon's wing.

"Thanks Starflight," Moon called to Starflight as the little Rainwing dragged her through the cave.

"It's got a bunch of berries. I found some huckleberries too. They don't usually grow at these altitudes." Kinkajou went on.

Moon walked quietly with Kinkajou thinking to herself. Where did I hear it from? She thought to herself.

As Kinkajou and Moon went through the tunnel Moon saw more dragonets up and around. She and Kinkajou stopped as they saw a Sandwing come out of his cave.

"Hey Qibli!" Kinkajou ran over to him.

"Hey. Anyone know where Turtle is?" he said before he saw Moon. "Hey Moon."

"Hi Qibli." Moon hugged him. "Why are you looking for Turtle?"

"We were actually gonna find you two and ask to go out for a flight." Qibli looked around the dragonets.

"Maybe he's getting Peril." Kinkajou said.

"Maybe."Qibli looked one last time. "Let's wait for him out there at least."

The three of them made their way through the dragonets to the entrance of the school. A slight breeze blew in through the mammoth opening. A few dragonets were already outside. Moon could see a Skywing and a Seawing in the distance. Seeing the Skywing made her think of Carnelian, her Skywing claw mate. She had died in an explosion soon after school had started.

"Hey guy's," a voice came from behind. "Sorry I took so long. I thought Peril would like to come with us."

"Hey," Peril said from her spot.

"So anywhere in particular or can I show you guys the berries I found the other day?" Kinkajou said before anymore could be said.

"We just have to wait for one more." Qibli said, looking up at the sky.

Moon looked up at the sky questioningly. Before she could ask who, she saw them. White scales shining brightly as a dragon angled towards the alcove they were sitting at.

"Winter?" Moon gasped, surprised to see him.

The former Icewing prince landed with a slight thump. "Hi." A dragon was angling behind him and landed with a hmf.

Moon recognized the strange looking skywing as Sky. "Hi Sky. Is Wren with you?"

"You kidding me," a voice chirped from Sky. "If I left him on his own, who knows what trouble he'd get into." The little human got off Sky and rested her elbow on the Skywing.

"These two have been helping me with the Scavenger-" Winter started.

"Ahem." Wren cut in.

"-Human Sanctuary." he snorted at Wren. "Wrens quite useful but Sky stops to put every animal that comes close."

"It's not my fault they're so cute." Sky fake whined.

"So where are we headed?" Wren asked.

"I was planning on going on a flight, but it seems Kinkajou has something to show us." Qibli eyed the Rainwing.

"Oh right." Kinkajou jumped up. "It's a berry patch. Come on! I'll show you!"

They all followed the Rainwing dragonet through the trees and past the mountain lake. Soon they were over a meadow when Kinkajou was starting to land. Tall grass covering the meadow with flowers sticking out all over the place. Moon landed behind Qibli and looked around.

"Has anyone been here before?" Sky asked when he landed.

Peril landed in the grass, it not burning because of an enchantment Turtle had done before animus magic had disappeared. "It's so soft."

"I think I'm the first one to find it." Kinkajou bounded in a big circle. "The berry bushes are over here!"

Moon looked around the quiet meadow. Suddenly it reminded her of her dream. A quiet went over the meadow as her eyes clouded over. Strange flashes of a land she had never seen before. Dragons she had never heard of fighting and dying. She felt cold talons on her shoulder as she fell to the side.

"Moon!" Winter's worried voice came.

"What happened?" Kinkajou and Qibli said simultaneously.

"I don't know," Winter tried to hold her up. "Wait. Her eyes."

"It's like the Darkstalker prophecy." Qibli helped Winter hold her up.

Moon's eyes opened still glazed over. In a deeper voice than her own she said:

Across the sea you may look,

but beware those who live.

Find what's hidden in the blood

Find her hidden among them all

Or death will reign on all tribes

Wings of Fire united forever,

must cross the sea before another.

Whispers of ice can carry far

But believe in a myth you find to face.

New surroundings to behold

New dragons to be told.

Find the lost one or all is gone.
