"Oh shit." Kim muttered as she hung up the phone coming through the front door of the District.
"What?" Trudy glanced up quickly. "What's he done?"
"Nothing. He's fine. They are on their way back now." Both Adam and Voight had flown down to Miami to interview a witness for their current case. They were in hospital and about to undergo surgery so they needed to get down their quickly and get it done. "It's Mack's school. There has been an outbreak of Chicken Pox. She hasn't had it yet and she's feeling a little hot, so I need to go get her."
"Oh, nasty. Have you and Adam had it?"
"I have, he hasn't."
"You know it's nasty if you get it as adults, can cause all sorts of ruckus, like sterility." Trudy told her bluntly. "I'm guessing you don't want Ruzek's swimmers nuked?"
Kim gaped stupidly at the desk sergeant.
"Burgess. Get it together. Lord knows this world doesn't need another Ruzek in it, but you, for some bizarre reason seem to be determined to inflict that pain on us, of that I am sure. So you'll need to banish him for at least 3 weeks."
"That's a bit extreme isn't it?"
"Do you really want the whining, the wailing, the over dramatic whinging and extra paranoia?"
"He's really not that bad." Kim argued, half-heartedly. "He's good at taking care of Mack when she's sick, better than me actually."
And that was the truth. Whenever Mack was sick Adam had the ability to calm her down, make her feel better and keep Kim from freaking out. To the point that Makayla had declared it his superpower.
By the time Kim picked her up she had a rash all over her torso and before the end of the day Makayla had her first spots. "What do you mean I can't come home?" Adam whined down the phone, they had just landed and had just arrived back at the District. He headed towards the locker room to grab a clean shirt. "I'll wash my hands. You know I did avoid that how last bout of stomach flu she caught."
"Only because you stayed at work 90% of the time." Kim reminded him. "And if you haven't had it then I don't want you to get it. It can…like… kill things."
"Things?" Adam queried. "What things?"
"Like… your stuff." She looked at Makayla who was lying on the couch waiting to talk to her Dad. She had been bitterly disappointed when her Mom told her that he would need to stay away while she was sick. He made being sick more fun and she did remind her mother about his superpower. "You know? Little Ruzek's." She whispered.
"Awww, that's a sweet way of asking for a baby."
Kim scoffed slightly and changed the subject. They hadn't had the conversation in a while but it was something that hadn't been taken off the table yet. It just wasn't something either of them were ready to talk about, even though they were both on the same page in wanting to have another child one day. "Anyway, so you and Kevin will have fun."
"Sure. Fun." Kim was used to him changing his clothes while talking on the phone as his voice would muffle, then become distant and then he usually dropped the phone at some point. He was actually proud of himself and his ability to multi-task and Kim let him think it wasn't annoying.
It's either Kevin or Trudy, pick your poison."
She was right, it could be worse. "I guess at Kev's it will be easier for you to sneak over for a quickie. Having sex at Platt's would be like trying to shag your girlfriend in your mother's house."
"So many things to unpack there. And I won't be sneaking over, I don't want you to catch it and in case you forgot, with you not being here, I need to look after Mack."
"I can be quick."
"Oh I know." Kim filled him in on how Makayla was doing and he promised to call her later on when he finished work. She would also pack him a bag and send it over to Kevin's.
Adam did decide to do some research on the little Ruzek matter. Kim had tied herself in knots and Trudy had suggested it to him as well so he spent half an hour trawling the internet to find out the truth and sent the link to Kim. Once she'd read it he called her up. "No truth to the rumour… did it come from Platt? It feels like a Platt thing. Little Ruzek's will be perfectly fine. They are tough buggers."
Kim admitted that it did indeed come from Trudy but she still wouldn't let him come home, not while there was even a small chance of him getting really sick with it. "She's right about one thing though, you would be a nightmare if you caught it."
"Whatever, I miss you. You know it's been a few days since, you know, we…."
"Tie a knot in it." Kim cut him off.
While Makayla did have a mild dose she wasn't sleeping well because of the itchiness and that made her grumpy during the day. It wasn't exactly pleasant at home so getting daily updates about the 'boys club' and how much fun they were having wasn't filling her cup up. But Adam did face time her twice a day, every morning before work and then again in the evening to help her with her homework.
That, as it turns out was the easy part.
First he had a headache and felt 'like crap' which Kim put down to his late night antics with Kevin. They had sent her numerous updates on their night out with the guys that Kevin plays basketball with and it appeared to get messier each time. Adam insisted he didn't drink that much as he had an early start the next day and was surprised that the couple he did have left him with a hangover.
Then he complained to Trudy that he was hot. "No you are not. I am not your wife." She shooed him away when he asked her to feel his forehead.
By the time he got up the next morning his torso was red and blotchy and he showed Kevin who promptly told him to pack his bag and rang Kim to tell her he was bringing him home. "He's all yours."
"Are you sure it's Chicken Pox?"
"He's got somethin' I ain't hangin' around to find out."
And then his first spots emerged and it was all downhill from there but at least Kim could go back to work seeing as they both had it and Adam could now look after her. Although she was fairly certain Makayla was doing most of the caring. Adam was as pathetic as she imagined he would be.
He was constantly asking for paracetamol, water, things to stop him itching, he thrashed about at night because he was hot and sweaty and would get up and shower three times a night. He didn't feel like eating, but then complained he was weak and would lie on the couch and moan all evening.
"Holy crap." He gasped and called out for Kim to come into the bathroom one morning. They were hoping things would start to get better but he was getting worse each day. "Kim, Kim." He yelled out. " Oh flippin' heck this is a nightmare. I'm dying."
"What is it now?"
"I've more got spots."
"I know, I can see them and you have spent the last two days counting them. So how many more do we have today?"
"It's on my…." He nodded towards his groin. "… dick." He whispered. "Seriously Kim, what the hell does this mean? Look." He was holding it awkwardly between his finger and thumb and was clearly becoming hysterical.
She peered at it from a suitable distance and grimaced at the sight. "That looks nasty."
"It's like everywhere." He lifted it up and showed her the underneath. "There is like five of them. Look. And I think they are on my balls."
Kim struggled to keep a straight face. She hadn't seen him quite so hysterical since the power went out just as he was about to defeat Kevin for the first time ever in an online game they'd been playing for months. "I can see. Does it hurt?"
"No, but its fucking itchy as all fuck."
She slapped his forearm gently as he dug his fingers into his groin. "Don't scratch it."
Adam was in full whine mode. "Kim, I'm dying here. This is a disaster. What if it hurts my Little Ruzek's?"
She couldn't help it, she laughed as she pointed to his Chicken Pox afflicted body part. "I thought you said they were tough buggers? And by the way, you ain't touching me with that thing for a long time." They had been relieved to learn that Chicken Pox generally only affected the reproductive system temporarily. It was rare to cause any serious problems, unless, of course he got a serious infection from it so she could understand why he was panicking a little but there was no point both of them dropping their bundle right now.
"Maybe it will soothe it. Keep it moist." He cringed a little, even to him it sounded bad.
Kim shot him a disgusted glare. "No, no it won't. I've managed to avoid scabby dicks my whole life. I am not starting now."
"Not true, you shagged Roman." Adam reminded her sarcastically.
She asked him if he really wanted to go there right now and he wisely shook his head. "No. I just…."
Kim held up her hand to stop him finishing his sentence. He looked so sad and miserable and she did feel sorry for him. He was covered in spots and had literally bathed in Calamine lotion last night which helped temporarily so he got a few hours' sleep but he started scratching in his sleep despite wearing long pants and long sleeve top. He worked up a sweat because of it so he was completely miserable and this latest catastrophe was the cherry on top.
Kim left him in the bathroom after a very entertaining discussion about whether he should take some photos so they could check if it gets worse, or perhaps send photos to an online Doctor.
"You are not taking photos of it to send it to anyone, especially not me. I swear Adam don't even think about it. Could you imagine if they got loose on the internet." Kim ranted. "Chicago Police Officer's spotty dick on display."
"I'll send it from my encrypted phone."
"No, you are not taking photos. Full stop. If you want to have it looked at go to an actual Doctor or the hospital."
"I can't go to the hospital, I'd have to drive interstate. I know the Doctors here."
"You are being ridiculous, you know that?"
"Yes." At least he was honest.
When he emerged from the bathroom he slumped down at the kitchen table. "I know you find this highly amusing… " Adam muttered despondently as Kim made him some breakfast. If he didn't eat before she left for work she doubted he would feed himself anything halfway decent. "… but can we not talk about this at work."
"But you want to take photos on your work phone?" The eyeroll was unmissable. "You know, your appendage is very rarely a topic of conversation at work. Shocking I know." She slid the scrambled eggs in front of him. Unfortunately he had some sores around his mouth which made chewing difficult so the soft scrambled eggs was about all he could manage. He had some protein shakes as well and Makayla had made him some jello. She put some eggs on a plate for Mack with some toast and called her into the kitchen to eat. "Now what are you two going to get up to today?"
"Well…." Mack started. "I need to make sure Dad doesn't scratch."
"You scratched." Adam grumbled.
"Nuh ah."
"Your Mom told me." He chewed slowly. He wasn't hungry and the food was going down like lead but knew that Kim wouldn't let him leave the table without finishing it.
"We might watch a movie." Makayla continued. "And I will make sure Dad eats lunch." She turned to her Dad. "What movie do you want to watch today?"
"Contagion."
Makayla tilted her head slightly and screwed up her nose. "I don't know that one."
Kim shook her head at Adam. "Pick another."
"No." Adam muttered. "I'm sick, it's my choice, that's the rules."
Kim reminded Makayla before she left for work not to let him get away with everything and that they were not to watch Contagion. She was the boss for the day.
It was a long three weeks. Eventually he was able to go back to work once all his scabs had healed over and that certainly lifted the mood in the house. Although they weren't going away quick enough for Adam, particularly when Kim still refused to engage in any activity that involved co-mingling of body parts. He was lucky he was allowed back into the bed and she washed the sheets daily to get rid of his shedding skin bits and his desperate pleas for them to get back on the tools fell on deaf ears. Until he was free from dry and crusty scabs there would be no nocturnal activities.
"This is completely unfair." He whined and threw himself down on the bed in a sulk. "You are just being petty now."
"Sure Adam, that's the way to get me in the mood."
He promised to stop whining if she promised that the moment he was all clear that she would get back on the tools. Kim reminded him that she was missing him just as much as he was missing her. This hadn't been easy on her either.
"Psst…" he checked over his shoulder to make sure nobody followed him into the locker room as they were getting ready to head home for the night. "Good News." Adam lowered his voice anyway. "I'm a clean skin again."
He'd been almost giddy since he'd come back in from escorting a suspect from the hospital to the holding cells with Kevin and now Kim knew why.
She smiled and slung her bag over her shoulder. "Well, it's an early night for Mack then."
"Not for you though." He slapped her playfully on the butt as she sauntered towards the door. "Giddy up Officer Burgess."
