Alexander found Dr. McKay studying the maintenance bot, which he'd taken apart. Damnit, right now they only had a limited number of those. Just one more issue with McKay.
"Dr. McKay, I need a private word with you."
"I'm busy, go bother someone else."
"Unless you want me to do this in public Doctor, you will come with me right now." Alexander said flatly. It was time someone laid the facts of life out to Rodney McKay.
Something finally got through to McKay and he finally looked up. Into a hard, implacable face that didn't look twenty years old anymore. There was a battle hardened veteran looking at him. A shiver ran down McKay's spine, this wasn't the cheerful joker from the first day or the annoyed husband/ship owner, this was a soldier and one that was annoyed with him. McKay put down his tools and followed Alexander.
Once they were away from everyone else Alexander dropped his bomb on McKay.
"On my recommendation, effective immediately you are no longer Chief Scientist of this Project, nor will you be the Chief Scientist of the expedition. A new Chief will be chosen. Your brilliance and experience can not be denied, but you are a lousy example of a human being, Doctor. You treat people like crap, you enjoy making people miserable. I honestly don't care why, find a shrink to help you figure it out. The President has requested that you still be allowed a place on both the Project and the expedition, but it will be under strict guidelines. You step out of line once McKay and I'll personally boot you through the gate, understand me? You do not bully anyone, ever. You do not attempt to take control over any project. You do not harass woman. You work only on the projects you are assigned to work on. You do not take something apart without permission. We have only a limited number of maintenance bots at present, if you want to understand how one works, pull up the schematics and study them."
"You can't, you're just jealous, just Iike everyone else!"
"For the record, Dr. McKay, my IQ is considerably higher then yours. Alterans are farther along the evolutionary path then Earth humans, which means our basic intelligence level is higher then even the most intelligent Earth human. One chance, Doctor. Blow it and Siberia will be a paradise compared to where you end up."
"You've read the SGC reports."
"Unlike Dr. Weir, I believe in being prepared for a job. You're treatment of Major Carter should have gotten you fired, not exiled and you're willingness to let Teal'C die just so you could prove you were right, should have landed you in jail. No more indulgences, Dr. McKay. Follow the rules laid out for you and we'll get along just fine. Get someone killed and I'll shoot you. There will be a briefing at 10 o'clock, local time. Be there."
And now to find the next person on his list. He had some questions that needed answers.
"Dr. Beckett, can I speak with you for a moment?" Alexander was going to take a different approach with this meeting. Dr. Beckett hadn't caused any problems as of yet, but if Alexander's suspicions were true, he could cause considerable damage.
"Certainly, I've set up an office over here."
Once the door had been closed. Alexander began asking his questions.
"Dr. Beckett, your resume says your speciality is genetics, with general surgery as a secondary. Why was a geneticist chosen for the Project? You didn't know about the genetic connection to the Alterans before I told General Hammond and SG 1 about it. You may have stumbled onto it accidentally at some point, but prior to my telling about it, you had no idea."
"I've been working as a geneticist for the Program for quite awhile, studying how genetics has drifted with humans the Gou'ald took off world. I've also studied a number of diseases we've come across and developed serum for some of them."
"I see. So were you brought in for your surgery skills or you will be primarily working as a geneticist? And neither one would rate you being named the Chief Medical Officer, according to your file, you've never led a department."
"Well, I suppose Elizabeth and I just got on so well at the interview that she thought I'd make a good Chief, she said I'm very approachable and encouraging and she felt that would help."
"If your medical base was broader, I'd agree. But it's too narrow to be the Chief Medical Officer, even if, given the medical equipment we have, it's not strictly necessary. But you didn't know about the equipment before, so having a Chief in general is understandable. What are your plans for this position, Doctor?"
"Well, I want to develop a means of giving everyone that gene of ours. With more people able to work the equipment -."
"Doctor, such a treatment would only be 5 -10% effective, at best and that is only half the equation. The vast majority of all humans will not be able to handle the mental interface with our technology, especially the highest level ones. We developed this technology over the course of centuries. What you see here is the end result. You can handle it, because your ancestry means your brain is more compatible. Earth's best bet, is to reverse engineer the technology and if they wish to incorporate a mental component, make it one adapted to Earth human brains. A gene therapy like you're proposing just wouldn't be very viable. I'm going to recommend against it in my report to the President. And some people can't be allowed it anyway. Doctor McKay would cause a considerable amount of damage if it worked for him. If I have any other questions, will you be available later?"
"Aye."
"There's a briefing at 10, local time."
"I'll be there."
