At the White House press secretary Kelly Ludlow contemplates having a ciggarette. She is trying to quit smoking, but this whole day has been very stressful. Vince Taylor, the deputy chief of staff, comes and talks to her.

Vince: Quite a day isn't it?
Kelly: Yeah. President Keaton is gambling a lot on Jack Bauer getting this computer chip.
Vince: Yes, but the rumor is that Gaines has been wounded, and he still hasn't revealed where the chip is.
Kelly: So we still have no evidence that the chip even exists. If it doesn't or if Gaines dies, the terrorists will kill thousands of innocent people.
Vince: To say nothing of losing any chance of getting Russia and Ukraine to the peace table. We might have to stay in Afghanistan despite being so close to peace after 20 years.
Kelly: I guess we'll see if the gamble pays off.

Kim and Mary continue to sit together silently at the hospital. Mary finally breaks her silence.

Mary: When Jamal wakes up, maybe it isn't good for him to hear us fighting.
Kim: Yeah, you're right. We don't have to act all lovey dovey to each other, but we can agree not to fight in front of him. We do both love him after all.
Mary: Yes, we do. And you are Teri's mother, I am her grandmother. So, for her sake, I supposse we can try not to fight as much.
Kim: I can live with that.

Jack Bauer and Tony Almeida observe as the doctors try to save Ira Gaines' life. But it soon becomes clear there's nothing they can do. Ira Gaines will die in a matter of minutes. Gaines knows he's about to die so he sends the doctors away and calls Jack to him. He wants a last bit of revenge against the people who killed him.

Gaines: I'm not going to make it.
Jack: Where is the chip?
Gaines: It's in my...
.
Before Gaines could finish his sentence, his last strength faded away and he died. The doctors tried to revive him, but it was all in vain. The chip that might have saved thousands of innocent lives, could have helped end two wars, was now presumably lost forever.

Split screens show Jack and Tony looking dejected, president Keaton pacing nervously in the Oval Office, Dave giving his full confession to the police, Kim and Mary sitting together in silence at the hospital.

At the urgent care center Jack sees Gaines' x-ray. He notices a dark spot. It could have been a bullet from the sniper, except Jack was certain that he saw an exit wound. Gaines wouldn't have trusted anyone else with this chip, he had to have it on him at all times. Jack played a hunch, and grabbed a scalpel. He carved into Gaines' body and found it. It was the computer chip, which could hopefully save thousands of lives and end two wars.
