The next morning the awkward tension was very much present but Kim and Eric tried to ignore it for Allie. They finished packing the car and cleaning up the condo before the three were off to get some breakfast before heading to the airport. They always went to the same restaurant fir breakfast on their last morning and then would head to the beach to say goodbye. It was a silly tradition but Kim and Allie loved it. As they sat down to breakfast they focused all their energy on Allie and making sure she was happy. That was the most important thing to them both. Kim and Allie always got the chocolate chip pancakes and Eric almost always got the breakfast burrito. The small talk with Allie flowed and things felt fairly normal for a little while at least.
After they ate they headed to Allies favorite place to visit the beach to have pictures and say her goodbyes. It was always dramatic and over the top but it was great for pictures and videos. Kim sent a video to Adam as Allie danced around during her goodbye song. She couldn't help but share the adorable video. She knew he probably wasn't awake yet but it would be a great way to wake up that was for sure. When the reply came the girl were already on the way to the airport. Kim hated the airport and hated flying even more but she was headed home and Adam would there at some point so that made the flight much more bearable.
Once they said goodbye to Eric they headed towards their gate. Kim knew it was a relatively quick flight but she still just wanted it done. They were early so they got some seats by the windows to watch the planes come and go. Kim and Adam texting the entire time about plans for that night. He knew it wouldn't be that long of a visit since they both had work again on Monday but they could still see each other and that was something. Once they boarded the plane Kim found Allie something to watch on the tv screen to keep her entertained on the flight. Kim found watching tv or movies helped her to not be so anxious about the flight. Well that and gummy bears. They were a must when flying.
The flight lasted just shy of two hours and when they landed Kim sighed in relief. They quickly made their way to the baggage claim to await their luggage. Kim texted Adam to let him know that they had landed. As soon as they got their luggage they were out the door headed towards their car. Kim just wanted to get home and unpack before Adam arrived. The traffic around the airport was always horrible but they made decent timing heading home. When they arrived Kim noticed a package in her doorstep. She hadn't t ordered anything but it wasn't entirely unusual for a friend or family member to ship something for Allie.
Then entered the house before Kim headed to the front door to look at the box. She was surprised to see it from a place at the beach that sold her favorite crab cakes. She immediately brought the box in to open it and find 6 crab cakes from her favorite place. It also contained a note. "I'm sorry you were right. I promise that things will be better between us. I just want you to be happy. I love you Kim." It was signed Eric. Kim was shocked. But thrilled that he was trying to extent the olive branch and make things work between them. She also realized it have to been ordered after their first fight and not after his confession. So it was a mix of emotions but it was a positive thing.
They would and could work this out for Allie. Continue to co parent for Allie. That was the important thing. The rest didn't matter. She quickly placed the food in the freezer and headed to unpack their suitcase. It didn't take long but it was exhausting work. When Kim returned downstairs she found Allie asleep on the couch. She had missed her nap due to the flight so Kim picked her up and brought her to her room. She quietly closed the door before heading back downstairs. Kim was zoned out with something on her phone when she heard a knock on the door. Kim slowly made her way to the door not sure who was here since her didn't get a text first. She was beyond thrilled to see Adam on her door step with a very sleepy Riley in his arms.
"Hey baby! I'm so happy to see you!" Kim pulled him into a tight hug. She melted into the hug, it felt amazing. "Hey Darling! God I missed you." Adam hugged her back feeling her melt against him. "Come in! Riley honey you want to go to sleep sweetie?" Kim asked Riley shock his head yes. "Okay baby. Let's get you upstairs to the guest room okay." Kim said as she showed them to the room. "Thanks for this. He had a big day playing with his grandparents." Adam stated as they left the room. "I get Allie crashed once we got home. Living room is this way." Kim pointed as Adam followed behind her.
"I like your place." Adam said as he sat next her. "Yeah it's a little small but it's perfect for us. We have a decent yard and we have our own bathroom. Except when Eric visits he has to share with Allie." Kim explained. "Well you did good for yourself. I'm really proud of you Kim." Adam held her close looking deep into her eyes. "Thank you baby! I proud of you too. You've done a wonderful job stepping up for your son. He's a wonderful little boy." Kim pulled him into a long passionate kiss. Kim slowly moved so she was sitting in his lap as her tongue slipped into his mouth. Adam moaned his approval as his hand settled in Kim's hair on the back of her head. His other hand rested on her back pulling her body closer.
"I'm so glad you are here now. I truly cant wait for our future together." Kim was so happy to have Adam with her again. "You are my home. You and the kids are all I will ever need." Adam kissed her slow and languid. Slowly running his finger over her soft skin. "I'm so comfy. Stay for dinner? Allie would love to see you." Kim winked. "Oh Allie wants to see me? Are you sure it's not you?" Adam laughed tickling her sides till she cried from laughter. "Okay maybe me too!" Kim laughed loudly as she hugged Adam running her fingers through his hair. "Saturday night, date night? Just the two of us." Adam offered as he caressed her skin. "Absolutely! Sounds perfect." Kim kissed his lips quickly before pulling back to smile wide at him.
"Also just so you are aware my parents all know about us." Adam laughed as he saw Kim's eyes go wide with surprise. "Well Ry kept asking for you so I had to explain. Both sets of parents were happy for me, for us. They can't wait to meet you and Allie. I'm not rushing it but they are excited to meet you. I also didn't tell them about your past. I wasn't sure what you were comfortable with being said." Adam shrugged at the end. "Thank you for being considerate about that. But I want to be honest with them. It's important that they understand that there will be dark days and hard times." Kim said as she snuggled into his chest. "Of course darling. On your schedule. When you are ready." Adam kisses her forehead.
"I think the sooner the better for meeting them at least. I don't want to hide this. We did last time because of our age and I hated it. I want us out in the open, no hiding, no pretending. Just us being together. I have never been more sure about anything in my life. You Adam Ruzek are the love of my life." Kim smiled so wide watching Adam process her statement. "You are the love of my life as well. And I agree out in the open is perfect.i hated hiding it as well. But never again." Adam kissed her hard pouring all of his love into the kiss.
The kids eventually woke up and Allie was thrilled to see Adam. The kids played with Adam running around in the backyard. Adam was trying to teach Allie soccer skills but it wasn't t really taking. But she was having a great time no matter what. Riley tried to follow them but was having a hard time keeping up but he was trying and having fun. As the night went on Kim ordered dinner for the 4 of them. They ate outside at the deck table enjoying the sunshine a little longer.
The boys left before bedtime so Riley could get used to his room again and Adam needed to be ready for his first day of Intelligence the next morning. They wished they could have stayed together all night but they had to be responsible as they both needed to be prepared for work the next day. "Okay so I will see you tomorrow in the bullpen when you are introduced. Have a good night sleep. I love you baby!" Kim kissed Adam before pulling him into a hug. "I love you too. Call if you need me. And yes tomorrow in the bullpen for all the fun and surprise." Adam laughed knowing the shock on Jay and Erins faces would be priceless. Adam gave Kim one last kiss evoke heading to his car with his son perched on his hip. Kim watched him walk away thinking that the man couldn't get sexier. But maybe he could, time would tell.
Allie showered and got ready for bed. Since it was summer she would be at daycare while Kim worked which was great for Allie to still see her friends even though it was summer. After Allie was asleep Kim heads back downstairs to go through the mail from the week and clean up the kitchen after dinner. It wasn't too messy but she wanted it clean before she headed to bed. Since it had been a long day Kim decided to head to bed early. She was already exhausted so the extra sleep wouldn't hurt.
Adam had gotten Riley to bed on time and then figured out his outfit for the next day. He knew it was street clothes but he wasn't sure just how casual it was. Once he was satisfied with his outfit be packed a bag with a change of clothes and then headed to pack Riley's bag for at his dads house the next day. He wanted to make sure he was early enough to talk to Voight before anyone saw him. He really didn't want to ruin the surprise. He sent one last goodnight message to Kim before getting into bed himself.
The next morning they both got through their morning routines separately but texted each other as they went. Kim wanted to know when he hit the district so they didn't see each other and ruin the surprise. As she was leaving to drop off Allie Kim got the message Adam had just arrived at the district. He was nervous to say the least. It was intimidating walking into the famous 21st district where his long lost friends worked. But a bigger part of him was excited for this new challenge. And to see Kim more often. It was a win, win.
"Good Morning! I'm Officer Adam Ruzek. I'm here for my first day in Intelligence." Adam reached out to shake hands with the desk sergeant who just told him to head up the stairs and he would be buzzed in. That was interesting he thought. He was met at the top by non other than Hank Voight. "Sergeant Voight. Pleasure to meet you. I'm Adam Ruzek." Adam offered a hand shake which was accepted this time. "Pleasure to meet you too. Let's head to my office." Once inside he shut the door. "Kid have we met before? You look so familiar." Voight asked trying to put the pieces together. "Yes sir. I was friends with both your daughter Erin and her boyfriend Jay. I also knew/know Kim Burgess." Adam watched as Hanks face sank. "You were the boy she was seeing when she was raped. Oh man. Okay well this is tough. Kim works here now. Is that going to be an issue?" Voight was floored.
"No issue at all except for Kim and I reconnected last week. We are giving it a go again. We both felt the connection immediately when we saw each other again. I've met her daughter Allie, they met my son Riley. I've met Kim's ex Eric. We are beyond serious about making us work. We actually hoped you could help us surprise Erin and Jay. No one really know we found each other so we want to make it a shocking scene if that's cool." Adam explained and Voight just laughed.
"Sure Kid. I'm good with you and Kim but you know about her issues right? She's normally up front about it." Voight was cautious about saying to much. "Yup I know all about it. She gave me the full story and full rundown before we talked about being together. We are going somewhat slow in that regards. I know she needs it and that's fine." Adam didn't want to say too much since it's his boss but he wanted to be honest. "That's good. Just make sure she doesn't shut down and don't push and it will work out." Voight offered a small words of advice. "One last thing before you call them up and announce me joining the team. I told Kim I would take that day off, you know the day of the rape so I can support her through it." Adam knew it wasn't great asking for time off already but he was positive Voight would understand. Voight nodded and wrote it down.
They went through the necessary paperwork and an explanation of the cases they worked before Voight noticed the entire team was awaiting the announcement. They all knew a new member was starting today so they were waiting to meet this person. Voight picked up the phone to invite Kim and her partner up for the reveal. Once he noticed they were upstairs as well along with Platt Voight stepped out to make the big announcement. "Good morning! I know you are all excited to meet our newest team member. He's been undercover the last few months busts a large drug operation and has been proven as a great undercover asset. So please welcome Officer Adam Ruzek!" Voight watched as he walked out of the office.
"OMG you are kidding!" Erin yelled as Jay just gasped before looking to Kim who was walking towards Adam. "Hey baby!" Kim reaches up for a quick kiss and a hug. "Hey Darling! Missed you this morning!" Adam stated as they pull apart. "No way! How?" Jay finally found his voice. "I will let him explain later. Let's have you meet my partner and then you can do your thing up here." Kim half asked half demanded which he got. They had work to do and it was a long story. "Roman this is Adam Ruzek, Adam this is my partner Sean Roman." Kim introduces knowing she was being watched by Erin and Jay. "Good to meet you. Thanks having my girls back." Adam extended his hand for a shake but got a huff in return. "Let's go Kim we have work to do." Roman left with a second thought. "Good luck today. Love you!" Kim called out as she followed. "Love you too darling!" Adam calls back watching her go.
As he turned back to see all eyes on him he decided to start the story. "Well what do you guys want to know? I can feel all eyes on me waiting to pounce with questions?" Adam tried to laugh but it was uncomfortable at best. "Okay first can we just say holy hell its been awhile! And then how you and Kim connected again." Jay started with as he walked closer to hug the man that was one of his closest friends. "It's good to see you too. You too Erin. I hears congratulations are in order for the marriage and the son. I'm gonna need pointers. Mine is now 2 and I'm terrified he's going to start the terrible twos any day now." The whole team listened as Adam talked. "You have a son?" Erin asked.
"Yeah Riley. Like I said he's 2. His mom dropped him on my doorstep when he was a month old. She left about 9 months before that. Hated me becoming a cop. So it's just been Riley and I. My folks help out watching him while I work." Adam got out his phone to show photos to anyone who wanted to see them. "Okay so what's the Kim story?" Kevin asked him. "You are Kevin right?" Adam watched him nod. "Thank you so much for watching out for Kim on patrol those first years. I really appreciate it." Adam shook his hand before going into the story.
"So Kim and I first met 13 years ago in North Carolina. We connected right away and grew really close. We hid the fact we were together since we weren't allowed to date yet. But after Kim was raped she pushed me away. Broke up with me, wouldn't see me or take my calls. I tried to move on all these years but she was always in the back of my mind. Fast forward to now. I took Riley to North Carolina for vacation. I just got off an undercover gig and he just turned two. I wanted to spend times with him before this new job started. We were out on my morning run when I heard this women laughing. I froze. I found the source of the laughter and was shocked, it was Kim. Obviously older and with Allie but it was Kim. As she got closer I called out her name and she stopped dead to look at me. When I asked again if it was her, she asked if I was who I am. Once I nodded she flew into my arms and sobbed into my chest. Saying she was sorry over and over. I was sobbing too." Adam needed a second.
"We got donuts and headed back to Kim's to talk. When the kids napped she told me everything. The rape, in detail. The aftermath, the hospitalization, the drinking, the pot, the arrest, everything. After a lot of tears and a small panic attack we decided to give it a go for real. Out in the open, dates, communicating. So we spent most the week talking and working through the past. I met her ex already, such a treat. But yeah it's been good. I feel whole again. I'm so happy it's insane. And I love how comfortable she is with me. No nightmares when we are together, it's been amazing." Adam gushed about the last parts. He was so happy with Kim he could almost burst.
"Well can't say I'm not shocked because this has floored me. But I'm really happy for you both. Seems likes it's meant to be. Finding each other again where you first met and working in the same district. It's insane! I'm so happy for you both though. It is amazing." Erin came out from her desk to hug him. She was still stunned to see him after all these years. But thrilled at the same time. "I'm glad you are back in our lives. We missed you when we lost contact. One day soon we all need to get together and we can meet your son and you can meet ours." Erin offered as she thought about the fun they all had together. "Yeah I would love that! And I know Kim would too." Adam was happy that he was accepted back into the group so quick.
The team spent hours getting to know Adam as he learned about them. Kim on the other hand was trying to deal with annoyed Roman. "Are you just going to be an ass all day because if so we can head back to the district and get a different partner. I'm not dealing with this shit today?" Kim was annoyed at him and how he behaved towards Adam. "Kim we have been partners for years now. I've never met your kid and you never gave me a chance. What's so special about him?" Sean yelled at her after pulling the car over. "First don't you dare yell at. I didn't yell at you! Adam knows everything about me. And he's the first person who I feel comfortable with. I have never been able to trust any man like I do with Adam. My heart has been locked up with Adam for 13 years. I don't think of you like that and I never will because it's always been Adam. I just didn't know it till I saw him again." Kim tried to explain how she felt.
"Does he know you don't put out? That might change things for him." Roman smirked thinking he was getting in a good one. "First off screw You! And second yes he knows I have issues with intimacy. He understands because he understands what I went through when I was raped at 13 years old. So you know what? Head back to the district I can't ride with you today!" Kim yelled back. Roman was shocked, he had no idea but he knew he screwed up. He did head back to the district and Kim headed right to the locker room. She was sitting on the bench crying when she heard Jay and Adam heading her way. She washed her face quickly to try to hide she was crying. "Hey! I didn't expect to see you in here. You okay? You were crying. What happened?" Adam knew right away.
"You always know. I had a fight with Roman and demanded to come back here cause I can't work with him." Adam pulled her into a hug as she cried again. Jay rubbed her back and left to find some tissues. "Kim what did he say?" Jay asked knowing it had to be bad. "He apparently was pissed I never gave him a chance and that he never met Allie. He bitched about me being with Adam. Then he said 'does he know you don't put out'. I just started to yell at him and demand to come back here." Kim was sobbing and it was drawing attention. "He said what to you? Oh hell no. Come on we are taking this to Platt right away. And I'm kicking his ass. First day or not I don't care." Adam pulled her back into his chest as he tried to calm her before walking down to the front desk area.
"I'm gonna talk to Voight and meet you down there. Try to prevent you from killing him." Jay offered as he left the room. Adam took Kim down to the front desk asking Platt to come into the office. Adam closed the door and shut the blinds, he knew Kim was going to cry again. Adam tried his best to explain what Kim told him as she cried all over again. "This is ridiculous! And unacceptable! I will deal with him I promise you. Kim I need you to write a formal statement for me and Adam I know you are new to the district but please don't touch him. Let me deal with him." Platt knew she was asking a lot but for now it was best. "I can't make any promises on that. Rape victim or not that comment was unacceptable. He needs to pay for that. He wants to hate me or us being in a relationship fine but never go after someone like that. He's a piece of shit!" Adam ranted.
"I get it Ruzek. But you have to let me work on this. For now take her upstairs and let her rest in the break room while I handle Roman." Platt knew Kim wouldn't be good for work the rest of the day. At least not on the streets. Desk duty would be different when she was calmer. Right now there was no way. Adam helped her up the stairs where Erin took over comforting Kim. Voight was still talking with Jay and motioned for Adam to join. "Did you punch him?" Voight asked. "Didn't see him. Reported him to Platt and Kim wrote a formal statement. Platt asked me to let her handle it and to not touch him." Adam reported. "Good. Platt will handle it and so will I. I'm not having this in my district. I don't care who the person is it was absolutely unacceptable. So let's get to work on our jobs and let her rest for a bit." Voight offered watching Erin with Kim.
"Hey Erin. We have a case, Kim you can stay here while we work. Just rest." Adam said as he knocked on the door to grab their attention. Kim nodded while Erin got up and headed to work. As the case progress the unit left the bullpen to go to a crime scene leaving Kim alone to process what the hell happened that morning. Kim was thinking when she heard someone walking towards her. She saw it was Platt and figured she had information about her statement. "Okay so he's been suspended for a week over his comments. He has to go to a sensitivity training. He has to write you an apology and then we decide from there if you want to be partners again. Today you are off duty but getting paid for it. This was not your fault. So change out and head home." Platt left the room and Kim headed to change out. She texted Adam to let him know she was being sent home for the day paid. She didn't want him to worry.
Adam saw Kim's message and replied that he was happy she was heading home and he would call her later. He also asked her to text when she was home safe and sound. As she drove from the district she felt a sense of relief that she was away from Roman and that toxic situation. She only hoped she found the answer to whether or not they could stay partners after that. Right now it was a absolute no but she wasn't sure how she would feel after he apologized. Time would tell afterwards but she struggled to keep an open mind about it. After getting home she texted Adam and locked the doors before heading for a bath. A long relaxing bath would be amazing. She just wish she had Adam to help her relax. But that would wait til later. And she could wait for him, 13 years was a lifetime but they still had a life time to go.
