6 weeks had passed since the couple returned from their getaway. The house hunt had yielded them with some good options with Spring around the corner and the blended family was happy and thriving once more. Eric had returned to Allie's life again promising he would never leave like that again. Kim and Adam had sat him down and explained that he could be pissed at them all he wanted but it should never affect the kids and that is exactly what happened. Exactly what they were trying to prevent from happening. But things seemed to even out lately and a good flow was existing in their lives. They were all just enjoying the good times while they lasted.
Adam had woken up to find the bed empty. He noticed the bathroom door shut but the shower wasn't running. He figure Kim had gotten up to pee but hadn't returned yet. He waited for her wanting to snuggle her close again. As she exited the bathroom she looked perplexed maybe even shocked. "Darling are you okay?" He hadn't moved from the bed but her expression had him concerned. She just nodded that she was okay. "Your expression has me concerned right now. Can you tell me what's going on?" He watched her move closer, her hands in the hoodie pocket, why he didn't know. "I um I think we should get married sooner rather than later." She sat on the bed pulling her legs to her chest. "I'm fine with that. Like how soon?" He was fine with it but confused as to why. "Um maybe the next few months. Something small with our closest friends and family." The words were rushed, she was freaking out inside. He could see it. "Why so soon? I'm fine with it and would marry you tomorrow but you have to tell me why?" He reached out to hold her, he could see she was trembling.
She never said a word just removed something from the pocket. Her hands shaking holding it. He gasped looking at the object in her hands. "Omg Kim really? We are having another baby?" He asked scared but also thrilled. She just nodded her head, she couldn't believe it was real. "Are you happy darling?" He was now freaking out. "Yes I'm just shocked. I wasn't expecting this so soon. I'm so happy but also scared, nervous, excited. Too many things to explain." She cried but he saw they were happy tears. He pulled her in for a hug letting the tears dry some before kissing her hard. "Did you just find out?" He asked wondering the whole story. "Um yeah. The last few days I felt off. Like not really sick but not 100% either. I thought maybe it was my allergies acting up with all the pollen but I got queasy a few times yesterday and this morning. I looked at my phone and realized I was late. So I took a test and here we are, pregnant." She stared into his eyes watching the tears flow down his face.
"This right here is all I ever wanted. I'm so excited for this journey with you. So what's the next steps?" He had no idea how any of this worked. "Well first we can't say anything till we are past 12 weeks. Second I need to call to get a doctor's appointment to get this confirmed. They can also tell us how far along I am at that point. Before you ask technically I don't have to start desk duty till 3 months. And yes we can still have sex, it doesn't hurt the baby. Also no alcohol and limited caffeine. Probably no more than one cup of coffee per day. The first three months are the most risky but it doesn't mean life is on hold. Just have to be more careful." She hoped that was good enough to answer his questions. "Well then how about we celebrate this little one with a nice hot shower?" He asked smirking at her. "Hell yeah!" She jumped up running for the bathroom Adam right behind her. After starting the water they both undressed Adam's hands going directly to her still flat belly. He was fascinated by it. The mystery of this little human growing inside his girl.
"Hi my baby! I'm your daddy. I love you so much already. And I can't wait to meet you. But I need to behave for your momma so she can stay healthy and you can grow big and strong. I also need you to stay in there as long as possible, just keep cooking as long as you can. I promise to be the best father any kid could have and to make time for you and your brother and sister. Let's not forget your amazing mother. She's the best so take it easy on her okay. Thanks my baby!" He kissed her belly before standing once more. Kim had tears in her eyes loving how sweet he was with their child who their only knew of for less than an hour. "Thank you for giving me this Kim. This is the greatest experience ever. I'm so happy to be apart of it this time around." She took his hand leading him into the shower. "How about you show me?" She smiled putting her hands on his pecs looking into his eyes deeply. "Are you trying to challenge me? That's what this feels like. And you know I never back down from a challenge. Let's go!" He picked her up placing her on the shower wall before thrusting inside her.
"Love how you can't back down! Makes things hotter!" Kim groaned loudly. "Never darling! Gotta show you and our little nugget all the love in the world." He thrusted hard biting into her shoulder trying to muffle his moans. Kims nails digging into his biceps. It was quick but it was definitely satisfying. As he placed her back on her feet he starting kissing her again when they broke for air they starting cleaning each other. "We're upset with how you found out?" Kim asked shyly. "What no! Why would you think that?" He asked looking over to see her looking down. "I don't know. I wish I could have done something fun maybe romantic. It wasn't the best moment. I was shocked. I don't want you to think I'm not happy about it." She looked up crying softly. "Baby you were shocked. That's okay. I'm shocked too but truly I'm happy to have found out right away. Seeing your face right after you found out was perfect. I got to see your face as you processed the news. That was magical. We are good I promise." He kissed her before cleaning her body again.
"I guess I always wanted to do one of those reveals where the father has no clue what's coming and opens a box with the test inside or a onesie with coming soon or the sonogram inside. I never got to do that. The first one I cried knowing he wouldn't be happy and this time I was shocked and couldn't speak. I just wish I could have given you something better." Kim explained looking into his eyes. "Hey none of that was needed. Yeah it would have been fun but I love seeing your eyes processing the information. Seeing the shock turn into love and happiness. I actually think this was pretty normal especially for you. I know you still get overwhelmed easily when things aren't planned but that's okay. Maybe it's sooner than we would like but Riley is doing better on the potty again and Allie is happy and we are solid. We got this planned or not." He watched her nod knowing it was a lot but he could also see the joy under the fear.
"I guess we need to buy a bigger house huh?" Kim laughed knowing they needed to put more effort in now. "Looks like it." He turned off the shower and helped her dry off before drying himself. "How will this work with work if we can't tell anyone yet?" This was important to talk about. "Um yeah I don't know. I guess I have to tell Platt. As much as I hate desk duty I think it's best to go on it soon. I think it's just safer for the baby. And I think it will make you feel better knowing we are safe." Kim tried to explain. "I know you hate it but I would be happier knowing you two are safe. We both know how dangerous the job is. Any call can turn ugly and I would hate to see you or the baby get hurt. It actually would kill me to see that happen. So thank you for doing this." He kissed her softly before heading to get dressed. "I didn't have to worry last time so this is new for me too. I think it will be trying but I promise I will do my best to keep us safe." Kim smiled getting dressed for work.
"What did you do for work when you were in college and pregnant? I never asked when we reconnected." He was buttoning his shirt but looking towards her. "Oh yeah! I worked in retail in high school through college. It was tough in its own ways but it was flexible with my school schedule. And allowed me to have a stable income. I was even a manager before joining the academy." Kim watched him smile. "Wow that's great! I'm proud of you. That's really impressive." They headed out to wake the kids before heading downstairs. Both kids were talking a mile a minute keeping their parents laughing. The family ate breakfast before getting dressed and heading out for the day. Once the kids were dropped off Kim made a call to the doctor's office needing an appointment sooner rather than later. They were able to squeeze her in for later in the day knowing her job was dangerous and getting her on desk duty sooner was better for her.
As they entered the district the couple walked hand in hand. They walked straight to the front desk seeing Platt standing there. "Hey Sergeant can we talk to you privately for a minute?" Kim asked hoping she wouldn't make a big deal. "Yeah come on." Platt waved for them to follow her. "What's going on you two?" She asked as soon as they were in private. "Um so I'm pregnant. At least the test said so. I have a doctors appointment later today to confirm." Kim saw the shock come over her face. "Are you two serious?" She asked shocked. "Yeah. We are pretty excited about it." Adam smiled wide beaming with pride. "Well congratulations! I assume you don't want to say anything just yet so that's fine. But desk duty starts today! We are not risking this!" Platt was stern with her words. "We know. We just needed you to know so you can keep them safe. Obviously please say nothing to anyone till we reach 12 weeks." Adam knew she would help without issue but he needed to say it. "Of course. I got her. Head to work Ruzek!" Platt dismissed them. "Okay darling I will meet you for your appointment. Enjoy your day. Call if you need anything. Love you!" He kissed her before turning to leave. "Love you baby!" Kim watched him leave.
"Morning!" Adam announced as he reached the bullpen. He heard people respond but he headed straight to the office to talk to Voight. "Hey boss can I have a minute?" He closed the door behind him. "Yeah everything okay?" Adam never came in unless it was an issue. "Yeah I just need to leave for a bit later today. Kim has a doctor's appointment at 2." Adam tried to sound calm and normal. "Okay anything you want to tell me?" He gave Adam a very stern look. "Um I'm not supposed to say anything just yet." Adam looked down knowing Kim would be pissed if he said anything. "Well okay I know what you mean. I won't say anything. But congratulations! I'm happy for you both. How is she doing?" He asked knowing exactly what's up. "She good. Overwhelmed since it was sooner than we wanted but she's happy about it. We were both shocked this morning to say the least but overall happy." He explained. "Yeah that sounds about right. That's normal for most couples. Especially families that have already been through so much. It will be great. Now get to work." Voight dismissed him.
"Everything okay?" Jay asked as Adam left the office. "Yeah Kim has a doctors appointment later and I want to be there for it. Nothing major." Adam shrugged. "If you say so." Jay laughed looking towards Erin who just shook her head. He sat at his desk pretty sure his face was giving it away but he said nothing. They got to work right away on their current case. He stayed behind since Kim had an appointment. He hated desk duty but at least he only had it today. Kim would have it many months to come. He was excited to see the baby for the first time. He was also nervous since he had never been to one of these appointments before. He went with Kim to have her implant removed but he never saw a sonogram before. This was a day he would never forget. He headed out 30 minutes before her appointment taking Kim with him since the carpooled.
"Are you excited to see our little one?" Adam asked. "Oh absolutely! It's always exciting to see them and hear the heart beat. It's amazing!" Kim smiled wide. "I'm nervous but also excited. I'm just so happy to be apart of this. It's all I ever wanted. Also Voight knows. I didn't say anything! He figured it out and I think Jay and Erin know. I don't think my face hid it very well." He listened to her laughing about it. "They won't say anything. But our faces are pretty easy to read right now. The happiness shining bright." Kim just laughed it off. "I think they were probably just happy for us. They really want to see us happy and together. I pretty sure they will freak out when we make it official." Kim smiled. "I think everyone will. Both good and bad. I'm sure Eric won't be thrilled or his parents but everyone else will be over the moon." Adam assured her. "Yeah that sounds about right. But honestly I don't care what he thinks. I'm so happy with you and about this tiny little nugget. It feels like a dream." Kim mused wistfully. "Absolutely agree darling!" He reached over to hold her hand squeezing it lightly.
They entered the office and signed in waiting patiently for her name to called. Kim rested her head on his shoulder as they waited. This really felt like a dream to them. As her name was called they moved back to the exam room the couple giddy with excitement. "Alright Ms Burgess I see had a positive pregnancy test. So we are going to have you change into a gown and then we can get started." The nurse left the room giving them privacy. She changed quickly and sat in the exam chair. They could both see the nerves running through her veins. "Ms Burgess let's have a look and see what we have?" The doctor stated. As she laid back Adam stood to take her hand. "Alright any symptoms?" He asked. "Not really just a bit queasy but other wise not really. Missed period and feeling a bit off but nothing major." Kim shrugged. "Alright good to hear. Since it's the first ultrasound we are going to do a trans-vaginal ultrasound. The next appointment we will be able to an abdominal ultrasound. Are you ready?" He asked wanting to double check. "Yeah I'm good." Kim nodded squeezing Adam's hand.
Adams eyes bulged when he saw the wand being inserted inside Kim. He couldn't believe that was going inside her. And that she seemed okay. "Alright let's see what we have." They watched the screen looking for anything. It seemed to take forever but they finally saw a sac. "Okay right there is your baby." The doctor pointed towards the screen. "It looks like you are about 6 1/2 weeks. Would you like to hear the heart beat?" He looked over to see the couple crying ugly tears. He flipped the switch letting the sound fill the room. "I will give you some time to process." He left the room allowing the couple to feel. "Darling this is amazing! I can't believe our little nugget is so healthy and big already. I can't stop crying!" Adam kissed her softly. "I know it's amazing. It's the most beautiful thing I have ever seen. And having you by my side makes it even better." They both just watched the screen falling more in love with their nugget.
"Did you hear the doctor? 6 1/2 weeks?" Kim laughed seeing the realization come over his face. "Well if this wasn't perfect already it is now. Our nugget was conceived in our happy place. The place we fell in love, found each other again, got engaged. It's pretty damn perfect." He kissed her again needing to feel her lips on his. "I know we really are meant to be." She laughed as the doctor returned. "So I printed out some pictures for you both. We will need to see you back in 4 weeks for the next ultrasound. And if you need anything in the mean time let me know. Congratulations!" The doctor left the couple alone to get redressed and head out. "Are you ready to head back to work?" Adam asked seeing her beaming. "Yeah I guess so. I would rather go home to celebrate with you but I guess work will have to do for now." Kim looked over at him. "Maybe just a few kisses before heading back to work?" He watched her eyes light up. "Of course!" Kim pulled him in kissing his madly.
"I hate to break this up but I'm sure we have to go." He saw her pouting but kissed her pout away making her laugh. "Okay let's go. The sooner we leave, the sooner we get home to continue our celebration." Kim giggled getting into the car. "Let's go darling!" He got in next to her. They headed to work again giddy so excited for the future. When they arrived they schooled their faces before heading back in. Kim headed back to her desk and Adam headed up to the bullpen. "How's Burgess?" Kevin asked right away. "Oh yeah she's good." Adam smiled wildly not thinking. "Really? That's great man!" Kevin just smiled nodding towards Erin. "She looked fine earlier when I saw her." Antonio said. "Yeah she's great. Just a check up." Adam nodded noticing the looks being thrown around the room.
"Just so you know Adam. We all get it. But just know we are very excited for you. And when you can tell us we will celebrate together." Al stated as Adam nodded crying tears of joy. They all got up to hug him excited for him. Excited for their family getting larger but they knew very well it wasn't safe to say anything just yet. As Adam calmed down they all headed back to their desks to finish the case at hand. They worked hard for hours finally closing their case and the team headed home. Kim was already home with the kids who had eaten dinner already. But they were so happy to see Adam coming through the door. "Daddy!" The kids screamed running towards him. "Hey kiddos! Did you guys have a good day?" He asked hugging each of them before putting them down again. "Yes!" They both screamed. "That's great how about you two keep playing while eat some dinner then we can do baths and story time. Okay?" Adam asked them. "Okay daddy!" The kids headed back to the living room playing again. "Hey how are you feeling?" Adam asked hugging Kim from behind. "I'm good. Feeling good. Ate dinner, had plenty of water. Rested with the kids. I'm good." Kim smiled knowing he was worried.
"Good I'm glad. Did you leave me any leftovers?" He asked smiling when she pointed to the oven. "Thank you darling! I love you and our nugget!" He whispered not wanting the kids to hear just yet. "Love you too! Enjoy your dinner!" Kim smiled as she cleaned up the kitchen. Adam sat down eating the dinner while watching Kim clean. He thought she looked beautiful. She always did but she looked more radiant now. When Kim joined him he reached out to hold her hand. "The team knows. All hugged me but said they won't say anything and I didn't have to say the words. They just knew." He admitted. "Well they are elite for a reason. And it's fine. They won't say anything. It's all good!" Kim smiled "I saw anew house listing today. It looked perfect. We should go see it soon. Like after work tomorrow. I think it could be the one, the perfect one to raise our whole family. Here's the link." He handed her his phone showing her the house. She scanned each photo before checking the room sizes. She looked at the price, the taxes, the school district, everything before she said anything.
"It's perfect. We need to move on this and quick." Kim agreed beaming with excitement. "Alright let me text our agent and get the ball rolling in it. We will probably have to move fast with the market heating up again." He watch Kim nod. It was just another thing to deal with but it would work out. She just knew it would. "Alright lets the kids upstairs for bath time and bed time." Adam ushered the kids upstairs ready to spend some quality time with the kids. He loved getting to hear about their days even if it was at bath time. It was still better than nothing to him. After both kids were washing and in their beds he read them their story. Each kid getting to pick a book. He loved reading with the kids too. He always tried to find new books for them but he also liked to do character voices when he read to make it more fun. With the kids sound asleep he found Kim laying in the couch with Tiger on her belly.
"You guys look comfy." He moved her legs so he could sit placing her legs in his lap. "Yeah you know he's been doing this for a while now. I wonder if he can hear the babies heartbeat?" Kim looked towards Adam while still petting the cat. "Maybe. I don't know anything about cats but I know they say animals can sense that kind of thing. So it's possible. I'm just happy he's calm while on you. He forces you to relax." He gave her a look, one she knew well, the one that said she doesn't relax well. "You are right. He's the best!" Kim giggled when Adam pouted. They sat in silence for a bit before Adam started to talk again. "How far along were you when you found out about Allie?" They had never talked about this part of the story. "Um I think I was almost a month. I had terrible morning sickness from day one. And I don't throw up so that was pure hell. When I told Eric we fought right away. He never said get rid if it but stated he didn't want kids. But I did. It was rough that's for sure." Kim rested her eyes but he knew she was still awake. Her hands still moving with the cat.
"Did you ever think about it having her?" He was pretty sure he knew the answer. "No. I'm not against abortion but this wasn't a case for it in my mind. I love Eric like my best friend but we weren't meant to be together. I still wanted a child so having your best friend's kid didn't seem terrible to me. If I had gotten pregnant from the rape, I probably would have had an abortion. But I'm happy to have her, always." Kim smiled thinking of her girl. "Do you have any name ideas?" He was trying to change the subject realizing her first pregnancy was hard to talk about since it wasn't the best circumstances. "Um no I don't right now I kind of want something cool but not crazy. Nothing common. But definitely not Duck!" Kim laughed so did Adam. "Yeah not happening. Even if it's the town that blessed our lives in so many ways." He leaned his head back thinking how wonderful the day had been. It was a bit shocking but he wouldn't change it for the world.
It wasn't long before he heard her breaths even out. He knew they had intended to celebrate but he also knew growing a child was tiring. They could celebrate tomorrow or any day for that matter. They had the rest of their lives to celebrate the life they had created. The life their love had created. In the town where they fell in love and where Kim was brought back to life. It was beyond magical there. He carried her to bed tucking her in before joining her. He wrapped his arms around her, one hand resting on her still flat belly. "Good night darling, good night nugget. I love you both."
