Tony's voice over repeats the last some lines from his speech. he says that he'll stick to the cards because its been a while since he's been in front of an audience.
"And you didn't stick to the cards." Fury said.
"Are you never going to let that go?" Tony asked.
He says that there's been speculation that he was involved in the events from the freeway and rooftop.
"Didn't we already see this?" Clint asked.
"Yep." Natasha said.
Christine asks if he expects them to believe that it was a bodyguard who just happened to be there despite the fact that he hates bodyguards and that the bodyguard happened to be equipped with stark level tech.
"That's part of the reason I didn't stick to the cards. They would've seen right through it."
"Because you're a terrible liar?" Natasha suggested.
The scene shows a view of snowy rooftops. 'Moscow' Appears on the screen.
"This is going where I thought it was going." Tony sighed.
Tony says he knows its confusing but its one thing to question the validity of the story and another to insinuate that he's a superhero. The 'I am Iron Man' press conference is on a TV.
Anton Vanko is shown lying in a bed.
"Is that Anton Vanko?" Howard asked.
"Yes that's Anton Vanko." Tony said, bitterly. Howard's mistakes with Anton cause what seemed like a blood feud between the Starks and Vankos. Or at least that's what Ivan believed.
He calls out for Ivan and Vanya while coughing.
Ivan walks over to him and helps him sit up and tells him, In Russian, that he should be where Tony is.
Howard glanced around, avoiding looking at onscreen Anton Vanko.
Ivan says not to listen to it, he then apologizes and says the only thing he can give Ivan is his knowledge, then he dies. Ivan has tears in his eyes.
'I would have had sympathy for him if he hadn't been such a dick.' Tony thought.
Ivan is shown building his own arc reactor with his fathers blue prints. Pictures of different newspapers and magazines adorn the walls of the room. Ivan's arc reactor starts glowing, he chuckles.
"This isn't good." Vision whispered to Wanda who nodded in agreement.
AC/DC' shoot to thrill starts playing. '6 months later appears on the screen. Tony, in the Iron Man suit, jumps out of a plane, flies through the roof of a building and lands on a stage. There is a group of women behind him, dancing. Something comes up from the floor of the stage to disassemble the suit.
"Jeez, talk about showmanship." Bucky whispered to Steve. They were reminded of the night Howard tried and failed to show off his flying car. Tony definitely inherited Howard's penchant for grand entrances and theatrics.
Tony says that its good to be back and asks the crowd if they missed him.
Someone in the audience tells him to blow something up.
"Um." Peter said.
"Why, why would you just yell something like that?" Quill asked.
"You saying you wouldn't?" Rocket asked.
Tony repeats the question and says that he already did that.
"True." Rhodey sighed.
He then says that he's not saying that the world is enjoying its long period of uninterrupted peace. He says that he's not saying that from the shadows of captivity never has a greater phoenix metaphor been personified.
"Arrogant much?" Clint asked.
He then says that he's not saying that Uncle Sam can relax on a lawn chair and sip iced tea because he hasn't come across anyone man enough to fight him on his best day.
"Except you are saying it, you're saying all of it." Rhodey said.
"A little narcissistic, don't you think." Natasha joked.
A woman in the crows says she loves Tony.
Tony says that it isn't about him.
"Its not?" Steve asked, skeptical.
He says its not about the audience and its not about them as a whole and says its about legacy and what they chose to leave behind for future generations.
"Oh. That's nice actually." Bucky said.
He says that for the first time since 1974 the brightest women and men of corporations and nations of the world will pool their resources and share their ideas to leave behind a better tomorrow.
"Oh... that actually seems very cool. It sounds like fun." Shuri said.
He says its not about them and that if he's saying anything its welcome back to the Stark Expo.
"Nice speech." Sam said.
He introduces Howard to tell the audience more about the Expo.
Howard blinked, Tony was using him to introduce the Exop?
A video starts playing on screen as Tony walks off stage. Howard starts speaking, he says that everything is achievable through technology.
"True." Shuri said.
"Well... mostly." Peter agreed. "There's still some things technology can't do."
"Things that it can't do yet." Shuri corrected.
He says that better living, health and the possibility of world peace are achievable through technology. He says he would like to introduce the City of the Future and says that technology holds infinite possibilities for mankind.
Tony pricks his finger on a device. 'Blood toxicity 19%.' it reads.
"Why is your blood becoming toxic?" Bruce asked, even though he had a feeling he already knew.
"Um, you'll see." Tony said, not really wanting to say why.
Howard says that technology will effect the way people live their everyday lives.
"It already does." Peter said. "Even in just the past 10 years, technology has come such a long way and is such an integral part in our everyday lives."
He says that there would be no more work and it would leave more time for leisure activities.
"I don't think I want a robot to take over my job, though." Pepper said. "No offence Vision."
Then welcomes everyone to the Expo.
A reporter is talking she says that they are live from the kickoff of the Stark Expo and that Tony has just left the stage. She says not to worry if they can't come tonight because the Expo is a year long event and says that she is going to check out everyone's inventions.
"That's a year long thing?" Quill whispered to himself.
"It was a large event... it didn't make it the whole year, though." Pepper sighed, remembering the robots- suits- drones? whatever they were, attacking the park.
The scene cuts to Tony and Happy walking out of the building, from Tony's point of view. Happy tells him to watch out because its a zoo out there. Tony is being crowded by a large group of people.
"That is a shit ton of people." Clint said.
Tony says that its nice to see them all and thanks them.
A couple of kids walk up to him and ask him to sign pictures.
Tony says it would be a pleasure and pats the boy wearing the iron man helmet on the head.
"That's nice." Pepper said.
"Oh, that was me by the way. Thanks for the autograph, Mr. Stark." Peter said.
Happy introduces Larry.
Tony says its a pleasure and that its nice to see him.
Happy says its Larry King.
Tony makes a comment about him being his people. They finally make it outside. Tony says it was very mellow.
"That was mellow to you, I'd hate to see what chaotic is." Valkyrie said.
Happy agrees and says and shows him the car then unlocks it there's a woman leaning against the side of it. Tony asks if she comes with the car.
Pepper smacked Tony.
Happy says he hopes so and greets her.
"Really Happy, I expect it from him but you too?" Pepper asked.
Tony does as well and asks for her name. Marshal gives her name. Tony points out the origin and says he likes it.
She says she's pleased to meet him.
Tony walks to the drivers side door after asking Marshal to let him past, then he asks Marshal where she's from.
"Why do you want to know that?" Quill asked.
"I just want to know." Tony said.
She says she's from Bedford.
He asks what she's doing there.
She says she's looking for him.
"Wonder why." Natasha said.
Tony says she's found him and asks what she's doing later.
She says she's serving subpoenas, then tries to hand Tony a piece of paper, he doesn't take it.
"Why aren't you taking the paper." Steve asked.
Happy reaches across him and takes the letter and explains that Tony dislikes being handed things.
"Why is that." May asked.
"I have a peeve, its a long story." Tony said.
Tony says he has a peeve. Marshal says that he is ordered to appear before the senate Armed Services tomorrow at 9am.
"Why does the Senate wanna see you?" Steve asked.
"The government doesn't like me very much, they don't trust me either. That's the only answer I can give you, sorry." Tony said.
Tony asks if he can see a badge.
She asks for confirmation.
Happy says Tony likes the badge.
"Before anyone asks, it's for conformation." Tony says when he sees a few people look at him funny.
Marshal holds her badge out and asks if he still likes it. Tony says he does and starts the engine then asks Happy how far away DC is. Happy says its 250 miles.
"How do you just know that?" Scott asked.
"I'm good like that." Happy answered.
'Washington DC' appears on the screen. Stern asks if they could pick up where they left off.
Sam's eyes widened in recognition. "Isn't this guy with Hydra?" He asked.
"With who!?" Steve asked, panicked.
"Oops." Sam said. Maybe he shouldn't have said anything.
Tony turns around and asks 'Yes dear'.
"You didn't." Steve said.
"I did." Tony said.
Stern asks if he could have Tony's attention.
"You can ask, you most likely won't receive." Fury said, he's tried. It's always a losing battle.
Tony says he can.
Stern asks if he possesses a specialized weapon.
"That's what this is about?" Bucky asked. Tony nodded with a sigh.
Tony says he doesn't.
A few people looked confused. Wasn't it technically a weapon? And if the suit itself wasn't a weapon, it did possess weapons.
Tony says it depends on how the word weapon is defined.
Stern clarifies by saying the Iron Man weapon.
Tony says the suit doesn't fit the description.
"Well..." Clint trailed off. "It- it kinda does."
Stern asks how he would describe it.
Tony said he would describe it by calling it what it is.
Stern asks what it is.
Tony says its a high tech prosthesis.
"Oh my God." Hope laughed a little.
The courtroom laughs. Tony says that that's the most apt description he has.
"And it still is." Tony said.
Stern says its a weapon.
Tony suggests that Stern doesn't care for the well being of the American citizens.
The room laughed. It was true...
Stern says his priority is to get the Iron Man suit turned over to the people of the United States.
"Not a great plan." Bruce said. The US government has proven time and time again that it isn't to be trusted.
Tony says that he can forget that plan because he is Iron Man and the suit and him are one in the same.
"'I am the suit. The suit is me.'" Peter joked.
He says to turn it over would be tantamount to indentured servitude or prostitution depending on which state they were in.
"Maybe prostitution isn't the best thing to bring up in a courtroom." May said.
Stern says he isn't an expert.
"Ooo, you just dig yourself into a hole." Scott said.
Tony agrees that Stern isn't an expert in prostitution because he's a senator. He turns around to look at Pepper, she's unimpressed.
"I wish you handled that with more maturity. Is it so much to ask you to behave like an adult?" Pepper asked.
Stern says he's no expert in weapons but they have someone who is and he calls Justin Hammer and says that he is their primary weapons contractor.
Pepper, Rhodey, Happy, Tony and Natasha all burst out laughing. "Wait why are we laughing?" Clint asked.
"He said weapons expert... and called in Justin Hammer." Tony said still laughing.
Tony says to let the record show that he observed Hammer entering the chamber and he was wondering when an actual expert will be in attendance.
Rhodey just barely held in his laugh.
Hammer agrees that he isn't an expert and says that he defers to Tony and calls Tony wonder boy. He says that he may not be an expert but Howard Stark was.
"Why is it that, when someone's mad at you they always bring up you dad?" Quill asked.
"They think it'll get under my skin." Tony said.
"Why does he call you Anthony, nobody calls you that?" Happy asked.
"He's trying to get under my skin." Tony answered.
He says that Tony has built a sword with untold capabilities and he insists its a shield. He says that Tony asks them to trust him as they cower behind it. He says that he wishes he were comforted.
"Why does he call you Anthony, nobody calls you that?" Happy asked.
"He's trying to get under my skin." Tony answered.
He then says that he's love to leave his door unlocked when he leaves his house but they don't live in Canada.
"There's crime in Canada." Maria said.
"Yeah... but I guess when in comparison to the US, Canada is the safest place ever." Natasha said.
Hammer says that they live in a world of grave threats that Tony wont always be able to foresee. He then thanks everyone and says 'God bless Iron Man and God bless America.'
"Which translates to: 'Ha ha, beat that Anthony, you bastard'." Tony said.
Stern says that what Hammer said was well said and then calls Rhodey to the chamber.
Tony looks shocked and gets up and tells Rhodey that he didn't expect him to be there.
Rhodey says he is and tells Tony to deal with it and move on.
"You shut him up quick." Rocket said.
"It's an acquired skill." Rhodey said.
Stern says he has a report on the Iron Man weapon compiled by Rhodey and then he asks Rhodey to read the 4th paragraph on the 57th page.
Rhodey asks if Stern is requesting that he read specific selections from his report and says that he was supposed to be testifying in a more comprehensive and detailed manor.
"That's how they get you." Tony said.
Stern says that things have changed and asks Rhodey to read.
Rhodey says that reading a single paragraph out of context doesn't reflect his full report.
"Yeah, well that's not how this guy sees it." Bucky said. "He probably saw that you wrote one opposing opinion and fixated on that."
Stern says he understands and asks Rhodey to read.
Rhodey reads, reciting that since Tony doesn't operate in a definable branch of government he presents a potential threat to the security of the nation and her interests.
"Does that not mean that we are all a threat to national security?" Vision asked.
"We are. They don't like that very much." Natasha said.
He then says that he went on to summarize that the benefits outweigh the negatives.
Stern says that that's enough.
Tony says he's not a joiner but he'll consider secretary of defense if they ask nice.
"Dude." Sam sighed.
Stern says he'd like to show the imagery connected to Rhodey's report.
Rhodey says its premature to unveil it at this time.
"Images of what?" Drax asked.
Stern says he understands and asks to show the images anyway.
Images of attempts to recreate the Iron man suit appear on the screens on either side of the table.
"Are they trying to-" Steve asked.
"Yep." Tony answered before Steve could finish his sentence.
Rhodey says that intelligence suggests that these are attempts to recreate the Iron Man armor. Tony does something on a stark device.
"I am Groot." (What are you doing?)
"He want's to know what you're doing." Rocket translated.
"I'm- well, you'll see." Tony smirked.
Rhodey says that the suits are possibly operational.
Tony says to let him see something and connects his device to the two screens. 'Welcome Mr Stark' appears on both screens. Tony says he commandeered the screen because he needs them and says he wants to see what's really happening with the suits.
"You just hacked them in front of their faces?" Scott asked. "That's pretty ballsy."
Stern asks what's going on.
"He's showing you the truth." Shuri says.
Tony says to direct their attention to the screens and that the first video is of North Korea. The suit takes a few steps and falls over and accidentally starts to shoot.
Stern asks to turn it off.
"Why? Because it hurts your argument?" Pepper asked.
Hammer gets up to do so.
Tony says the next video is Iran. A suit crashes into the camera. Justin is still trying to turn the screens off. Tony says that there isn't a threat there.
A new video starts to play. Tony rhetorically asks if its Hammer and how he got in the game. Hammer is shown controlling the suit. Tony tells Hammer to focus up because he's on TV.
"Him too?" Steve asked.
The suit freezes and breaks. Hammer swears. Hammer finally gets the screen turned off.
Tony says that most countries are 5 or 10 years away and that Hammer Industries is 20 years away.
"The only reason he had it when he did was because of Vanko." Tony muttered.
Hammer says he wants to point out that the test pilot survived.
"Really not helping your case." Natasha said.
Stern says they're done with the point that Tony's making.
"The point that they aren't yet able to successfully recreate that technology?" Tony said.
Tony says that point is that they're welcome.
Stern asks what for.
Tony says he's a nuclear deterrent and its working. He says that America is safe and secure and if they want his property they can't have it.
"Damn right they can't have it." Happy said.
He says he did them a favor and says that he has successfully privatized world peace and stands up, holding out two peace signs.
"I wouldn't go that far." Bruce said.
Tony asks what more could they want and that he tried to play ball with them and calls them ass clowns. He gestures to Stern.
Stern says 'F*** you Mr Stark. F*** you buddy.'
"Did he just say the F bomb on national television?" Steve asked.
"That he did." Bucky said.
"That's not very professional for someone who's a senator." Coulson said.
Stern says that they're adjourned. Tony puts on his sunglasses and blows two kisses at the senator.
Rhodey sighs and shakes his head.
The camera pans out and Ivan Vanko is shown watching this on TV. Tony says that his bond is with the people and that he'll serve the nation at the pleasure of himself. He then says if there's one thing he's proven its that they can count on him to pleasure himself.
"You just had to say something sexual." Happy said.
"Force of habit." Tony said. "What I said wasn't worse than Senator Stern saying the fuck word on national television. People expect it from me but from them... no."
Ivan does some engineering, creating a weapon of his own. A large rope like object starts sparking. He puts it on and slices his TV in half.
"That doesn't look friendly." Howard commented.
"Yeah, he kind of has it out for me because of what you did to his father." Tony said, bitterly.
