Hermione Granger

As it later turned out, the white beam of pure light, or as she now knew, a spell called patronus, was cast by a man known as Remus Lupin, their new Defense Against the Dark Arts professor.

Apparently, after noticing that there were multiple dementors on the train, Professor Lupin thought that, well, the safety of the children might be at risk because of that . That's why he decided to go through the train and make sure that none of the students would be harmed by the literal soul-suckers, who were apparently allowed to be there, as stupid as it sounded.

...Well, maybe she was too harsh. After all, the Ministry must have had a good reason for letting the dementors roam on a train full of children...

...or at least she hoped so.

Regardless, Professor Lupin's initiative eventually led to him encountering and blasting away the dementor that had visited their compartment. Apparently, the professor had already suspected that the creatures might be interested in Harry, so he didn't hesitate upon seeing one in the doorway of their compartment, immediately hitting it with a patronus spell and coming to the trio's compartment to check on them.

Despite his unruly appearance, Professor Lupin turned out to be quite a pleasant and capable man, as upon seeing Harry and Ron's condition, he immediately moved to help them, improving everyone's condition with strategically used chocolate bars that the man seemed to have in stock.

It took some time, but eventually all three of them were able to recover enough for Professor Lupin to be comfortable leaving them alone, saying something about having some duties to attend to. While Hermione found the man pleasant enough, she was quite glad when he finally left. After all, there were some things she needed to discuss with Harry and Ron, things she didn't want anyone else to know.

For example, the fact that she was somehow able to repel a dementor.

Whatever happened right before Professor Lupin showed up was definitely not normal. Hermione, much to her dismay, didn't exactly consider herself an expert on dementors yet, something she would have to correct in the future, but from what she was able to remember about these disgusting creatures, the patronus spell was supposed to be the only real way to fight them off.

And yet, despite all that, she was not only able to withstand the dementor's harrowing aura, but also somehow was able to hurt it, seemingly using nothing but determination and willpower. It was obvious that there was more to it than met the eye, something she still didn't quite understand.

But she would, in time.

Still, whatever was the reason for her newfound mysterious ability, she was glad to have it. After all, without it, she and the boys would have been in serious trouble, especially given the dementor's disturbing interest in Harry.

What's more, the fact that she was somehow able to defeat the dementor filled Hermione with a certain kind of euphoria. After all, even though the nature of her ability still remained a mystery, it was a clear sign. A sign that despite her past experiences related to her thankless fight against Michael Brown, she was not incapable of victory. Yes, her mission had been full of failures so far, with Hermione being constantly humiliated and punished for her efforts, but her encounter with the dementor gave her new motivation to keep trying despite the odds.

After all, if she was somehow able to defend herself against the amortal devourer of souls, maybe she would somehow be able to win against Michael Brown as well.

Yes, her victory over the dementor made Hermione more determined than ever to stop Brown and put an end to his reign of chaos!

That surge of determination lasted for about an hour.

Then it suddenly ended when she stepped off the train, full of motivation, only to see her nemesis, her sworn enemy, the malicious demagogue known as Michael Brown... being assaulted by the enchanted carts used to transport students to Hogwarts Castle.

"Stop, I don't have any food! Stop chewing my hair, damn it!" The Ravenclaw boy, usually so smug and self-satisfied, was now yelling and flailing his arms around as several enchanted carts, which for some reason were shaking and moving erratically, turned toward him, surrounding him.

Surprisingly, none of them were touching Brown directly, instead standing at some distance from him. That didn't stop the boy from acting as if he was being pushed by them, however, as his body moved back and forth, seemingly moved by an invisible force. Brown tried to use his hands to push back the nonexistent attackers and escape from the circle, but something seemed to keep him from achieving that goal, as he was still surrounded despite his efforts.

"Luna, help me! They won't let me go!" Brown shouted, apparently giving up on escaping and hoping his friend would help him with whatever was going on.

A glance at the girl in question, however, made it clear that no help from her would come.

"I tried to give them some treats, but they didn't respond in the slightest, Michael. What have you done to make them so excited?" Luna Lovegood, Brown's constant companion, was also present, though she took no direct part in the scene. In fact, she was watching the whole bizarre event from a safe distance, looking at Brown with a surprising amount of... envy in her usually distant eyes. The girl was, for some reason, holding some sort of food in her hand, waving it around, as if attempting to draw the carts away from Brown, but she was, as expected given her insane plan, completely ignored by the enchanted vehicles, which were focused solely on Brown.

"I didn't do anything! Gross! One of them just chewed my finger!" Brown replied, waving his hand in disgust. He then looked at Marcus Fawley, the newest addition to the cuckoo crew, for help, but the boy in question did nothing but watch the situation unfold with barely concealed disgust. He didn't even try to help Brown, content to watch his struggles from a distance, seemingly detached from the situation.

Members of Brown's group were not the only ones around, as this bizarre 'scene' caused quite a commotion among the students. Many of them were now watching Michael Brown's struggle against the carts, with most of them torn between being confused by the development and being amused by the boy's struggles. It took about ten minutes before the strange spectacle came to an end, as the ruckus eventually drew Hagrid, who did something to calm the carts, saving Brown and allowing everyone to finally travel to the castle.

By the end of this weird 'adventure,' Michael Brown was battered, exhausted and, for some inexplicable reason, a little wet.

Staring at the miserable figure in front of her, who was currently whining to Lovegood about his experience, Hermione realized that yes, it was Michael Brown, the one she was determined to stop, the one who was the source of all the evil that had befallen her over the past year, the great mastermind behind the petrifications and Black's escape.

Suddenly Hermione felt something wet on her face. Surprised, she reached there, only to find a single tear running down her cheek.

What? Why was she crying?
