At school the next day, Peter was talking to Gwen in the hallway.
"Last night was amazing." Gwen said. "Thanks for the swing."
"You're welcome." Peter said. But Gwen sensed their was something wrong.
"What's wrong?" Gwen asked.
"The night I went to your house and left, I had an encounter with Black Widow." Peter said.
"Really?" Gwen asked. "What for?"
"She said she wanted to ask me some questions," Peter began, "but Lizard and some people had gotten in the way before anymore could be said."
"Weird." Gwen said. "But I do wonder what she wanted to talk about."
"Should've asked when I saw her again." Peter said.
"You saw her again?" Gwen asked.
"Yeah." Peter said. "It happened this morning..."
That morning
Peter was slowly waking up when he turned on his side and saw a woman standing next to his bed. Before he could do anything, the woman covered his mouth with her hand.
"Scream and I will do worse than this." The woman said.
Peter gave her a once over before nodding his head. She released her hand and sat in the chair by the desk.
"Can I help you?" Peter asked.
"No." Natasha said. "But I can help you, Peter."
"How do you know my name?" Peter asked.
"I've technically known it for a while." Natasha said. "A long while. And until recently, I've discovered a little more about you and how much you've grown."
"Forgive me for being blunt, but I don't know what you're talking about." Peter said, as he sat up.
"Those scars say otherwise." Natasha said. Peter looked down and saw that he still had the scars on his chest. "If those are the first damages you will receive, better take up sewing. And you can drop the act. I know you're Spider-Man."
"W-what?" Peter asked, as he stuttered. "I-I'm not Spider-Man."
"Change your tone." Natasha said. "Next time you wanna start looking for creatures, don't put your name on items you can't keep track of." She finished as she put the destroyed camera on his desk.
"My camera." Peter said. "I was thinking about going to get it, but now it looks like I'll need a new one."
"Thank Connors for destroying it." Natasha said. "But now, he most likely knows who you are."
"What?" Peter asked, sounding a bit scared. "Are you sure?"
"It sounds like the most logical answer." Natasha said.
"So, what should I do?" Peter asked.
"You do nothing." Natasha said, as she went to the window. "I'll be keeping an eye on you wherever you go. That includes school. If Connors is after you, then I'll find a way to detain him if possible." She opens the window. "I don't want you getting hurt. So try to stay out of it."
"Hey, wait." Peter said.
"Peter, are you up?" May asked, catching Peter's attention.
He looked at where Natasha was, only to find that she's was gone.
"Yeah, I'm up." Peter said.
"Wow." Gwen said. "I never would've imagined that the first girl in your room would be the famous Black Widow." She teased him a bit.
"Haha, very funny." Peter grumbled.
Before anymore could be said, they hear a loud roar, but Peter knew what that roar meant: Lizard is here. As Lizard turned the corner, Peter cursed as he looked back at Gwen only for a moment.
"Go. GO!" Peter told Gwen, as he ran at the lizard.
At the last second he slid under him and came at him from behind. The lizard grabbed him off his back and threw him forward Peter felt his backpack yanked from his back and kicked out slamming the lizard into a few lockers. But the lizard grabbed his feet and threw him through a wall.
Peter groaned but he didn't have long before the Lizard was on him. He crushed one of Peter's arms and the boy barely dodged as sharp claws slashed at his face as he tried to use a chair to defend himself.
"Nowhere to hide Peter." Lizard snarled.
As Peter was struggling against Lizard, his eyes found his backpack and Peter webbed it toward him catching it as the lizard threw him through yet another wall. His back was going to be so bruised, thank god for super healing. Lizard looked at the vials of chemicals and mixed two together and threw it, causing an explosion.
"All these souls, lost and alone." Lizard said. "I can save them. I can cure them. There's no need to stop me, Peter."
But Peter wasn't listening he grabbed his shoes and threw it at the scientist turned Lizard.
The creature growled and Spider-Man jumped out and webbed the lights above him and brought them down on the creature. Lizard looked around for the hero not knowing that he was on the ceiling. He webbed him up jumping on his back and trying to get control over the rampaging beast.
"You're not thinking straight doc." Spider-Man said. He knew this wasn't Connors, the man he met was not the one he was currently fighting, it was the serum, it had to be the serum. "Stop this, this isn't you." The lizard just roared and slashed cutting through the lockers like they were made of butter. Spider-Man jumped onto the ceiling grabbing a hold of the ceiling and crawling along. The lizard followed Peter kicked him pushing him to the ground and webbed his claw to the lockers.
Unfortunately, that wasn't such a smart move as he wrenched the locker free and used that to swipe at Spider-Man.
"Alright so you don't want to talk." He got a roar in response and Spider-Man webbed his mouth shut "There you go." He grinned under his mask but the lizard just clawed the webbing off of himself and swung his tail at the boy. Peter caught it.
"Don't.." The lizard whipped his tail sending Spider-Man into a wall but he didn't release his grip on the lizard tail.
"Make me…" He was smashed into the opposite wall.
"Have to… " He grunted in pain as his back met lockers.
"hurt you!" The lizard whipped his tail once more detaching it and sending Spider-Man and the tail through a set of double doors. Spider-Man threw the still wiggling the tail aside. "That's disgusting." Spider-Man said.
He attempted to web him up close but The lizard grabbed him by his head and smashed him up against a window. He struggled against the grip but couldn't free himself. Suddenly, Lizard was struck in the head by something, causing his grip to go slack and he dropped Spider-Man to the floor.
"Gwen" The lizard hissed and Gwen backed away looking frightened. Lizard attempted to claw her, but he felt a sharp pain on his back as well as a gunshot sound. He turned and saw Black Widow, a gun in her hand. Before Lizard could do anything, Spider-Man moved quickly encasing the giant creature in webbing before grabbing Gwen and using the trophy in her hand to break a window. He hugged her briefly glad she was alright but also slightly mad that she had risked her life like that.
"I'm going to throw you out the window now." Spider-Man whispered.
"What?" She asked and then screamed as Peter threw her out the broken window and caught her with his webbing.
"Thanks for the assist." Spider-Man told Black Widow.
"Don't mention it." Black Widow said.
All three heard the police sirens and Spider-Man grinned and turned to face the lizard.
"Uh-oh, somebody's been a bad lizard." Spider-Man quipped, as he and Black Widow got in fighting stances.
In the library, Stan Lee was working on some books that he didn't notice Spider-Man and Black Widow crashing in the walls with Lizard. Lizard threw a table at Stan which Spider-Man quickly webbed and threw back as Black Widow dodged and attacked the monster. Stan then left for lunch just as The Lizard sent the heroes flying into the bookshelf. Spider-Man wrapped Black Widow in his arms, allowing him to take the blow. They braced for an attack but when they looked around but Lizard was gone. They ran through the school until they found it, a giant hole leading straight into the sewers.
"Ok, here's what I need from you." Peter said. "There is a girl outside. Her name is Gwen Stacy. She's blonde, ponytail, you can't miss her. Have her call me."
"Ok, I'm on it." Black Widow said, as she left to find Gwen.
Outside, paramedics were checking on students to make sure they weren't injured in anyway. Gwen was looking around making sure no one saw her. Until she saw a woman looking at her and signaled her to come over. She went to where the woman was and saw that she was Black Widow herself.
"You're Black Widow aren't you?" Gwen asked.
"Yeah." Natasha said. "Peter told me to find you and then call him."
"So you know Peter is..." Gwen began to ask.
"Spider-Man?" Natasha finished. "I'll worry about that later. Right now, call him." Gwen pull out her phone and called Peter. Peter himself was walking in the sewers when he heard his phone ring and answered it.
"Gwen, hey." Peter said.
"Where are you?" Gwen asked.
"I'm fine." Peter reassured her. "I'm down in the sewer, I'm tracking him. I gotta stop him before anyone get's hurt. Is Black Widow with you?"
"Yeah, she is." Gwen said.
"What do you need?" Natasha asked.
"In order to stop Connors, we'll need an antidote." Peter said. "Do you know how to run a serum, Gwen?"
"Yeah. I do them for Connors all the time." Gwen said.
"Ok great." Peter said. "Listen I need you to go to Oscorp. And I need you to access cross-species file. It's a blue serum file #12389"
"Ok got it. On my way." Gwen said as she hung up.
"My bike is over here." Natasha said. "C'mon."
Gwen followed her to the bike and sat behind Natasha, wrapping her arms around her torso as she started the bike and rode off to Oscorp.
Peter kept moving until he had found the man's nest or whatever lizards called their homes. He eased forward on full alert, but his spider sense remained silent and the tension in his shoulders eased. He saw a video camera and clicked play.
"I spent my life as a scientist trying to create a world without weakness, without outcasts." Connors said. "I sought to create a stronger human being, but there's no such thing. Human beings are weak, pathetic, feeble-minded creatures." Peter looked around and saw some plans and a laptop showing the Lizard transformation. "Why be human at all, when we can be so much more? Faster. Stronger. Smarter. This is my gift to you."
The laptop then showed the Ganali device and it was running a simulation, he could see what the man wanted to do, he wanted to spread the serum in a cloud over the entire city, maybe even farther than that. He remembered what Connors had said before. You can't outrun a cloud. And there on the map circled savagely with a black marker was Oscorp.
"Oscorp." Peter whispered.
Happy Thanksgiving, folks. Hope you all have had a great Thanksgiving with your families and I hope this chapter will bring you comfort as we near the final chapters of this story.
But other than that, here's the next chapter. Next time, Lizard makes his way to Oscorp to enact his plans. And Spider-Man heads the same way to stop him.
As always, let me know your thoughts.
