Retconning this chapter because I forgot it was the first day of the GMS (Granger Memoria School!)! So that means there are two chaps for today!
Chapter 1/2!
Monday, September 21, 1998
"Do you remember, The 21st night of September? Love was changin' the minds of pretenders," was playing from a phonograph that morning when Hermione and the boys got down for breakfast. Hermione grinned. This was one of her favourite traditions. Every year on the 21st, Jean and Richard would blast the song all morning, doing silly dances and always pulling Hermione in.
Hermione was pleased that on this first day of school she got to dance with her parents. In the years at Hogwarts, she'd always hummed the song as she got ready. One year Dean had heard her humming and had pulled her into a wild dance in the common room, and until Colin had come most of the other Gryffindors had just ignored them.
Hermione, Colín, and Dean had single-handedly made it a tradition in Gryffindor to play the Earth, Wind, and Fire record that morning and most of the Gryffindors joined in on the party. She hoped they still carried on the tradition, knowing Ginny would encourage them.
When Theo and Hermione arrived at the GMS (Granger Memorial School) that morning, Remus was dressed in his finest attire. He was hovering around the hall, checking different things to make sure it was all prepared.
Regulus had donated money to hire a few House elves for the school and had worked with Remus to bind them in a way that was non-restrictive. They still had the benefits of the School's magic but none of the limitations of the former bonds they'd endured.
Falstaff and Shylock, the elves, were bouncing around the room after Remus nodding along as he asked them various things about the school.
"Thank goodness you're here," Remus said nervously.
"Were you worried we wouldn't show up for our first day?" Theo asked cheekily.
"We'll no, of course not," Remus huffed. Hermione noticed that Teddy was strapped to his chest when a little arm shot out from the carrier.
"Don't tease him," she said, "he's just stressed because this is such an important job."
"Highest paying one I've ever had too," Remus said with a flush. The funds for the school had come from the Potter, Longbottom, and Nott vaults. Draco and Regulus had wanted to contribute, but their money was closely watched by the Death Eaters.
"We'll you are the Headmaster," Theo said as he grinned at the werewolf. "Look at us, an unlicensed Potion Mistress, a Werewolf Headmaster, the Chosen One as a DADA professor, the bloody wunderkind of plants, the Original Bad Bitch in Transfiguration, we're going to kill it."
"You forgot the hype man to put all hype men to shame," Hermione chuckled, elbowing Theo.
Remus seemed to have calmed down during Theo's speech and was straightening out his robe when the rest of the professors appeared. Narcissa was in her glamour already and was walking with Harry, Neville had his nose pressed into a book in a very Hermione reminiscent way. "Good morning everyone," Remus said smiling. "I'm quite excited to have you all here to get ourselves started. Since our group for all subjects is fairly small, Harry will be the only one with a full caseload. The rest of you have a smattering of students, but we've prioritised Charms and DADA as they're the two most useful in duelling.
Hermione rolled her eyes at Neville and Narcissa who both smirked. At least the students who'd be attending her class would probably be at least minorly interested. Remus shooed them to their classrooms, and with a sweet kiss, Theo left her at her door.
The day absolutely sped by. She'd created a curriculum for each of the students, and the small number allowed for individualised plans for each of them. Hermione had to consult Draco's notes a few times, but found that she knew more than she thought she had. Lunch allowed a few minutes for Hermione and Theo to sit together quietly.
"How are you liking it, love?" he asked after a few moments of silence.
"It's only the first day, but I feel quite confident in my capabilities. Ask me again at the end of the week. How is your first day going?"
"Well bloody everyone needs to take charms, and some of them are hopeless, I hope this War is over soon so I can get back to being a house husband and wealthy ne'er-do-well," he huffed. "I'll happily teach our children, but I have absolutely no interest in teaching other people's children."
He leaned forward and kissed her chastly on the lips. Their lunch went by much too fast and before Hermione knew it she was standing back in front of the class. She was ever so grateful for the charmed shoes that the elves had insisted on. She was so sore from standing for so long, but it would have been immensely worse without them.
When they arrived home, Draco was groaning to Richard about the song September and how it had been stuck in his head all day. Richard laughed loudly when Draco told him that he'd started humming it during one of his meetings with Slughorn which had resulted in the man giving him an odd, sharp look.
Hermione was content.
