(Thinking About the Future)

Ellie and Enid were running along the rooftops of the buildings. This was perfect because they were able to stay out of the soldiers' path.

"Chop, chop, Ellie!" Enid shouted, looking over her shoulder. Ellie was falling behind a bit. They slid down a slanted roof. They jumped from building to building.

After a few more buildings, they stopped running on a building that had a glass roof dome on top of it. Ellie caught up with Enid, completely out of breath from the run over there.

"Man… when did you get so fast?" she said, holding herself up by her hands on her knees. "Same with my fighting skills. I've had time on my hands while I was here," Enid replied, sitting down on the edge of the building.

Ellie sat down with her and let her legs dangle off the edge. "Ellie, let's think logically here. Have you ever thought about what would happen in the future?" Enid asked, her smile dropping.

Ellie glanced over at Enid with a brow raised. "The future? You mean with spaceships and stuff?" she asked her, partly joking. "That's not what I meant. I mean what do think's gonna happen to us in the future?" Enid said, trying to smile again.

"Not much to think about, really," Ellie replied with a shoulder shrug. "Look, I've been wanting to get out of here ever since I got here three years ago. I'm not going to spend the rest of my life as a good little soldier. I don't want somebody telling me where to shoot and where to shit. When you turn 16, they give you a gun and turn you into one of the soldiers. You of all people oughta know this," Enid explained, leaning forward with her hands in her lap.

"What else is there?" Ellie asked her. "I don't know. But, I know one thing. You remember how you told me you never ridden a horse?" Enid asked, standing up from the ledge.

Ellie glanced up at Enid in subtle surprise. "Yeah? Why?" she asked her. "Follow me," Enid said, climbing down the ladder that was attached to the wall.
