Weiss Schnee, Remnant of the Ice General
Prologue
She had lost.
Two women stood in and arena made out of tall ice walls. One of them was Akame, the red-eyed killer, the best assassin in the empire and her inevitable killer.
Her blade-work was perfect, her motivation was palpable, her will unbreakable. In the past she had faced only a few that could challenge her and every time she came out on top but not this time. Her arrogance and bloodlust was her own undoing. She had no other choice but to accept her defeat, acknowledge Akame as the stronger one of them, and the strong could do anything they want to the weak.
Akame's opponent was none other than Esdeath herself. She was a young woman in her early twenties, with long sky-blue hair and piercing blue eyes. She was simply breathtaking, tall with hourglass figure and long slender legs. But she was also dangerous. Behind a visage of a girl was a sadistic manipulator who could massacre hundreds with a motion of her hand and had no problem with killing the innocents.
She stood battered and defeated. She was covered in bruises, her right arm was missing; the stump that remained has been frozen solid so she wouldn't bleed out. But the most prominent injury was a singular clean cut that went from her right shoulder down to her left hip.
Despite all of this she could still fight, if not for the fact that the blade that cut her was covered in the most potent poison in the world.
Despite her arrogance Esdeath knew better than take her life for granted. After all, those who kill should be prepared to be killed. She was born into a tribe where power was everything, where the strong thrived and weakness was purged, the very same tribe that was massacred when she was away. So with a constant reminder of her mortality she decided to live her life without regrets, but despite her best efforts she still had one.
She looked around the battlefield and spotted the body that was laying there before her fight even begun. Tatsumi, the boy she fell in love with. The man she was drawn to. Her love that never said those three words back to her. Maybe he didn't want to, maybe he couldn't, maybe he was afraid of what would become of him if he ever said them back.
She walked away from Akame and sat down next to her other half cradling his dead body, planting a soft kiss on his forehead.
At that moment she regretted a lot. Not being able to make him join her. Not being able to make him love her. But most importantly not being able to save him.
It felt strange; her own logic dictated that he was weak, he died because he wasn't strong enough, just like the jaegers, just like the three beast, so just like then she should acknowledge his death and move on.
So why couldn't she accept his death? Why? Why did it hurt so goddamn much?!
Her grip on his body tightened as tears dropped from her cheeks.
For Esdeath it was a love at first sight, those bright green eyes and that beautiful smile, they made her feel warm. The moments she spent with him made her feel normal. With him she wasn't a general that most people would be afraid to talk to, with him she was just Esdeath, a young woman who wanted to spend time with her boyfriend. When she held him in her sleep she felt at peace and her dreams weren't plague by death and burning tribe. Even when he lied to her, even when he betrayed her, when he refused her, she couldn't stop herself from loving him.
What made her fall from him was his normalcy, but what made her truly love him were their similarities. Tatsumi was strong and there was unwavering bravery inside his heart. More than once she tried to persuade him to join her, but each time Tatsumi refused her. She recognized the passion in his eyes and every time she saw it made her heart skip a beat. It was paradoxical, she wanted to make him submit, to break his spirit and make him hers, yet when he fought her it made her love him even more.
Tatsumi was just like her. He knew what it was to be weak, to be born poor, to be hungry. He knew what it was to fight, steel and kill just to survive. And he survived, hrough sheer force of will, following his own set of rules. With his own two hands he took back his life. Just like her when she first came to the Capitol.
But she wasn't the only one who was playing games, as the saying goes: it takes two to tango. Tatsumi wanted her to join him and betray the Empire. Turn on the prime minister and fight for the revolution. But that was something she couldn't do. Esdeath wanted to live in a world where people die and kill for what they believe. To choose their own destiny. Where everyone is free to fight their own wars. The very same world that let her and Tatsumi thrived while purging the weak.
Tatsumi believed that his sword was a tool of justice, his every kill was about protecting the weak. And he was willing to fight for what he believed, not for what they told him was right. Not for money of fame. Not for the revolution, not for the empire or anyone else. Even the Nightrade were his allies only as long they shared the same goal. And that's why she loved him, despite everything.
Esdeath could feel the poison from Murasame making a way to her heart. The Demon's extract was slowing the process down but it wouldn't take long for the poison to finish its job. She wouldn't give the revolution the pleasure to see her dead body so with great effort she covered herself and Tatsumi in a shard of ice that frozen them to their cores.
All her life Esdeath lived a selfish life. She only did things that benefited her and never helped anyone out of the goodness of her heart. On the other hand Tatsumi was incredibly selfless. She couldn't understand why he cared so much about others, why he would put his life on the line for complete strangers. Esdeath always thought that everyone is responsible for their own fate.
In the end they were both fools and soon they will both be dead. Tatsumi bit of more than he could chew and Esdeath remained alone without her lover and rival.
For all her power Esdeath couldn't protect what was important to her, she was alone just like when bandits destroyed her tribe. The only condolence was that she wouldn't have to live like that for long.
And with the last beat of her heart the shard incasing Esdeath and Tatsumi shattered, leaving behind only white snowflakes as the only remnant of the ice general.
Meanwhile in the darkness of space
A massive European dragon was sitting on top of moon orbiting the planet. He was know by many names, on many different worlds, but most only referred to him as the God of Darkness. He was covered in shadows, almost as if he was a physical manifestation of darkness, with burning red eyes that promised pain to any who angers him. Right now he wasn't angry, no he was furious.
It didn't have anything to do with the planet below; he couldn't care less if the people decided to destroy each other.
What he cared about was his older brother, that traitorous bastard. His brother, the almighty God of Light, the righteous and just, people call him. He called him massive hypocrite. His brother always told him about keeping balance and follow rules. That is a hard pill to swallow when you are god freedom and choice just as much as you are god of destruction and death. As it turns out his brother preaches water while pouring himself a wine.
It all happened hundreds of years ago, on the very first planet they created, when a mourning widow came to him and begged him to revive her dead husband. Being the merciful god he is he obliged. Then his brother showed up and killed the poor man again, and cursed the wife with immortality, but he decided to turn a blind eye, because the woman tried to trick him. Unfortunately it wouldn't be the last time his deer brother broke his own rules
Obviously she wanted revenge for what he did to her and created an army to kill the two of them. Lashing out in anger the god of darkness annihilated the army as well as the majority of the planet's population.
But that wasn't the end of it. Many years later his brother decided to revive the husband as well as giving him immortality, fully knowing that the immortal couple would turn on each other. The husband's name was Ozma and his brother wanted him to be his champion against darkness that would one day unite the world, collect the four relics and bring forth the judgment day. And all that happened behind his back.
But he had enough and right now he had the perfect soul for his own scheme, his very own champion that would turn the tide of this ancient war.
