Who wants a random story about Kenwyn?
I do not own.
"Cadet Jones." Kenwyn looked up to see Hutton walking over to her.
Immediately, she snapped to attention. " Yes sir!"
"At ease." Hutton said. "Your evaluation has come up."
"Sir, yes, sir!" She replied. Butterflies were starting to form in her stomach.
Hutton seemed to be taking his sweet time. "I've been impressed with your last performance with Agent Salazar and Cadet Nixon."
"Rex and Noah?" She blurted out before realizing she was breaking protocol.
Hutton didn't seem to notice. "Yes, them." He nodded before continuing. "Because of it, I believe you on the fast track for early graduation."
"Sir?" Kenwyn could hardly believe her ears.
"Yes, we think you are ready to join the ranks of agents now." Hutton had a slight smile on his face.
"Really? Oh, thank you, sir!" Kenwyn lost her composure for a second.
"However…" Hutton held up his hand. "You need to pass one more test."
"Yes sir. I'm sure…" Kenwyn began.
"You will be heading up a team to deliver an EVO to Providence Base." Hutton interrupted her.
"A delivery mission, sir? Isn't that simple?" Kenwyn was disappointed. She was hoping for something more challenging.
"There's no simple missions, cadet." Hutton said sternly. "I fully expect that you will take this mission seriously."
"Of course, sir! I won't let you down." Kenwyn was mortified that he would think she would be flippant about anything.
"I'm sure you won't." Hutton said satisfied. "Be ready tomorrow at 1800 hours." He saluted and she returned it before he turned leaving an apprehensive cadet.

Kenwyn waited impatiently for her group to assemble. She was earlier than the scheduled time, but she was expecting everyone to be there early. In the distance she saw figures walking to her. She stood at attention. Hutton and two other cadets approached. She recognized them as two recent recruits, Carter Harris and Grace Lopez.
"Cadet Jones, you will be taking Cadet Harris and Cadet Lopez to deliver this EVO." Hutton ordered her.
Kenwyn cautiously looked around. "Sir? What EVO?"
"This one." Hutton went to his belt. Kenwyn noticed for the first time there was a small clear plastic container hooked with chains. He produced a key that unlocked it. He handed it to Kenwyn who accepted it. There seemed to be nothing in it.
"Uh sir?" Kenwyn looked at Hutton puzzled.
"Look carefully." He told her.
Kenwyn held the box close to her face. Out of the blue, a lizard-like EVO appeared and lunged at her face. She jumped back almost dropping her box.
"Woo wee, that's a nasty looking thing." Harris whistled.
"Is it dangerous?" Lopez asked peering in the box.
"Very." Hutton answered. "You will bring this little guy to alpha base for those eggheads over there to study. Be careful, it has the ability to turn invisible."
"We see… or rather we can't see." Harris joked. He looked around for approval, but everyone was focused on the box.
"What information do we know about this creature?" Kenwyn asked ignoring Harris.
"This thing took out several agents before they were able to contain it." Hutton said darkly.
Kenwyn was about to protest that this little thing looked harmless. She bit her tongue just in time remembering what Rex had taught her that looks can be deceiving.
"Really, that itty bitty thing?" Harris said pointing at the cage. The creature lunged again and he jumped back.
"How did they finally contain it?" Lopez asked.
"They discovered that if you pick it up by the tail, it can't attack." He answered.
"Really that's it?" Lopez wrinkled her nose.
"You try finding the tail when it's invisible." Hutton retorted.
"We'll deliver it safe and sound, sir!" Kenwyn saluted cutting off their ramblings.
Hutton returned the salute before looking at the other two cadets. "You two jackwagons listen to your commanding officer. She will be evaluating your progress!"
"Sir, yes, sir!" They snapped to attention and saluted.
Hutton left the small group.
Kenwyn eyed the two cadets. "We better get going."
"Road trip!" Harris cheered.
"I call shotgun." Lopez bolted away.
"Hey! You got shotgun last time!" Harris ran after her.
Kenwyn rolled her eyes. It's going to be a long trip.

"Are we there yet?" Harris whined.
Kenwyn resisted the urge to smack him. "We're almost there." She said through gritted teeth. "Which direction?" She asked as they approached a fork in the road.
"I think we turn here." Lopez said looking at the virtual map.
"Left or right?" Kenwyn was starting to lose patience. Had Lopez never read a map before?
"I… I don't know." Lopez whimpered twisting and turning the map around.
Kenwyn stopped the jeep. "Harris, switch places with Lopez." She snapped.
Harris jumped out of the jeep while Lopez moved to the back. Harris happily buckled himself in and studied the map.
"We go left." He announced confidently.
Kenwyn turned left. A few miles later, the road became rocky. As they bounced around the EVO in the box got kept hitting Kenwyn in the side.
"Are you sure this is the right way?" Kenwyn couldn't believe that Providence wouldn't spring for better roads.
"Yeah… 100%... or maybe at least 80-90%... you know, pretty sure." Harris said.
"What?" Kenwyn stopped the jeep again. Snatching the map from his hands, she studied it. Looking at the sun and her surroundings, she let out a frustrated hiss. "We are miles off course." She glared at the cadet.
Harris sheepishly rubbed the back of his neck. "Well, all the mountains look the same."
"Yeah, and the roads too." Lopez said from the back.
Kenwyn looked hard at them. "Listen you two. We have to deliver this EVO to Providence. Either help me or stay out of the way."
"We're doing our best." Harris squeaked.
"We've never been on a mission before." Lopez said.
"That's not your best and that's not an excuse!" Kenwyn growled. She resisted the urge to send them back to Basic so she could finish the mission by herself. But Hutton expected the mission to be completed by all of them, so by god, they will complete it together. "Which one of you can drive…?" They both raised their hands. "Well." She added. They both put their hands down. Kenwyn wanted to scream. "You're going to learn now!"
Kenwyn directed Harris as they finally barreled down the correct road towards Providence. She had Lopez hold onto the EVO in the back seat. Kenwyn subconsciously rubbed the bruise caused by the cage.
"Uh, Commander?" Lopez interrupted Kenwyn's thoughts.
"What?" She didn't mean to snap but she was still annoyed.
"I think we're being followed." Lopez pointed in the side view mirror.
Kenwyn glanced back to see that there was a cloud of smoke in the distance closing in on them. She brought out her binoculars and peered through them.
"It's a couple of bikers. I don't recognize who they are." She said through gritted teeth. "But they're coming up fast. She grabbed the radio up front. "Providence! Come in Providence. We have unidentified people following us… Providence?"
There was nothing but static until a foreign voice answered. "Give us the EVO and no one gets hurt."
"What?" Kenwyn gaped.
"You heard me. We just want the EVO and we will let you go."
"No!" Kenwyn exclaimed. "Who are you?"
"Then you will pay the price." Static replaced the voice.
Kenwyn glared at the radio for a minute before slamming it down.
"Harris, evasive maneuvers." She ordered.
"Uh, what does that mean?" Harris squeaked.
Kenwyn stifled a groan. She quickly explained what she wanted him to do. "Do you understand?" She asked.
"You want me to dive like a cabby in New York." He replied.
"Close enough." She nodded.
They lurched off the paved road and tumbled about in the jeep. The bikers also got off the road.
"Oh man, what are we going to do?" Lopez fretted.
"We're going to make our delivery." Kenwyn said determinedly. "Lopez! Hold onto that cage with your life. Harris! Drive in the general direction of Providence."
"Sure thing. Uh, what are you going to do?" Harris yelled back.
Kenwyn pressed a button underneath the dashboard. A compartment opened to reveal a blaster. Leaning out her window she fired a warning shot. The bikes split apart dodging the fire. One pulled away. Kenwyn concentrated her fire blast on the biker. The biker swerved to avoid the fire. From the corner of her eye, she saw that the other biker trying to sneak up on them. "Nice try." Kenwyn muttered under her breath. She quickly turned and shot at the biker who pulled back.
"You missed." Lopez observed.
Kenwyn wanted to kick Lopez but refrained. "Can you do better?" She challenged, holding out the blaster to her.
Lopez accepted the blaster. Turning around, she fired, effortlessly taking out the front wheel of one of the bikers.
Kenwyn's eyes widened. "Change of plans. Give me the cage. Lopez keep firing."
Lopez passed the cage to Kenwyn. She fired at the final biker who managed to dodge the shot.
"Commander, look!" Harris got her attention.
In front, bikers appeared. The bikers fired on them. The jeep veered to avoid them. He sped in a different direction. The bikers converged with the other biker. Together they came after the jeep.
"Don't go too off course. We need to get to Providence." Kenwyn told him. "Lopez, keep firing."
"Commander, I'm running out of ammo." Lopez told her.
"And we're going to be out of gas soon." Harris added.
Kenwyn scowled. The bikers had weapons. They didn't. There were five bikers. They were only three. What should she do?
The jeep began slowing down as the needle pushed to the letter E.
"What are we going to do?" Lopez asked as her blaster clicked uselessly.
One of the bikers pulled in front of the jeep forcing it to stop.
"Give us the EVO." The biker aimed a blaster at them.
"Follow my lead." Kenwyn whispered. She stepped out with her hands raised, cage in hand. "Let us go first and we'll give you the EVO."
"You are in no position to make demands." The biker sneered. "Now hand it over." He cocked his blaster.
Kenwyn scowled. She held the cage out. The biker stepped up to grab it. Just as he was about to touch the cage, she opened it and threw it at him. The biker screamed as the EVO leapt at his face. The other bikers came to his aid.
"Quick!" Kenwyn motioned to the two in the car. Harris and Lopez jumped out of the jeep. They seized two of the vacant bikes.
"Go!" Kenwyn told them.
"What about you?" Harris asked.
"Don't worry about me. Get to Providence and get help!" She ordered.
Harris and Lopez looked at each other before taking off.
Kenwyn turned her attention to the bikers. Just as she thought, the EVO made short work of them. As the bikers lay groaning on the ground, the EVO turned invisible. Kenwyn was ready. She grabbed a handful of dirt. She threw it where she had last seen it. An outline appeared. She pitched forward and grabbed the tail. The EVO lizard reappeared, hissing furiously. Kenwyn deposited it back into its cage. She walked past the bikers when one of them did a low sweep knocking her off her feet.
He stood over her holding a blaster to her head. He cursed. "You're going to pay for that, girlie."
Kenwyn thought she was finished when a voice boomed in the desert.
"You lay a hand on her and you won't make it out of here in one piece."
Kenwyn turned to see a whole line of Providence tanks.
The biker dropped his blaster and raised his hands in the air.
She saw Harris and Lopez in the crowd. She breathed a sigh of relief.

They had kept Kenwyn overnight at the Base to make sure she did not suffer any ill effects. She was now waiting for someone to debrief her on her mission. The door to the room slid opened and she was surprised to see Hutton walk in. She immediately stood up and saluted.
"Good job, Cadet Jones." Hutton saluted her back.
Kenwyn was ecstatic but tried to give off an air of calm. "Thank you, sir! Cadet Harris and Cadet Lopez were a big help."
Hutton smirked. "You don't have to lie, Agent Jones."
"Sir?" She asked uncomfortably.
He gave a chuckle. "Harris and Lopez are undercover instructors."
Kenwyn could only stare incredulously at him.
"Yes, they are part of the training program." He said. "We had to see how you would handle a leadership role. You passed with flying colors."
"But the EVO… What about the bikers? Were they…" Kenwyn stammered.
"Well, the story about the EVO is true. But we didn't think it would be much trouble in a cage. The bikers were a little unexpected. Had no idea why they wanted that EVO. They're being interrogated now." Hutton rubbed his chin thoughtfully. "But how you handled that just cemented the fact that you are absolutely ready for the next step."
"Yes, sir?" She asked nervously.
"You are graduating with rank of lieutenant." Hutton told her proudly.
"Really?" Kenwyn forgot herself. "I'm a lieutenant?"
" And I believe White Knight has a mission for you." Hutton smiled.
"I won't let you down sir!" She saluted.
"I know you won't. Now you better head onto his office. White Knight doesn't like to be kept waiting." Hutton told her.
"Sir, yes, sir!" She quickly headed to her first mission as a Providence agent.
Well, that took longer than I thought. I wanted to update this for a while. Anyone still interested in the side characters of GenRex? I think Kenwyn was an underrated character. I wished they had used her more in the show. Anyway, this is a precursor to Lost Weekend. Hope you liked it.
