Chapter III
Claude
It had been a few days since Akko confessed her feelings to Diana, and Hannah could safely say that things around her were starting to change. Not necessarily for the worse or the better, in fact, she didn't know, and that made her a bit insecure, though she didn't show it.
She was currently in her room, reviewing some material for magical astrology because Professor Ursula had mentioned that there would be a small quiz the other day.
Time passed, and everything was eerily quiet. Laughter echoed through the hallways, and the wind rustled the trees in the forest a distance away from the dormitories.
Then suddenly, a loud thud echoed at the door, followed by a shout, "DIANA, I KNOW YOU'RE IN THERE, COME THE HELL OUT!" She recognized it immediately; it was Amanda. Judging by her tone and strong accent, she wasn't in a good mood.
"DIANA, I'VE BEEN LOOKING FOR YOU FOR DAYS, COME OUT, DAMN IT!"
'Ugh, this doesn't look good at all' Hannah thought to herself.
'Aaaaah, I really didn't want to open it, and besides, Diana wasn't here, which meant more trouble for me,' the thought continued in her mind.
"BAM, BAM!" And there were the knocks again.
Summoning the remaining willpower she had (in addition to obvious annoyance), she stood up and flung the door wide open. "What do you want, Amanda?" she asked coldly.
"Where is Diana?" she replied with another question, emphasizing her tone.
"She's not here, so get lost," the brunette said and closed the door, hoping that would be enough.
And obviously, it wasn't enough. In a second, she felt how the wood that protected her privacy hit the wall on the other side, and a furious American was walking towards her with the intention of extracting the information by any means necessary.
"Where is she?!" she asked while gripping her wrist tightly, and Hannah, resisting the onslaught, remained silent.
"WHERE IS SHE?!" she repeated, squeezing harder with each word, but the answer still didn't come from her lips.
"You have three seconds to answer me, and you better say it, or you'll regret it," Amanda threatened, with a look that left no doubt she was capable of anything.
"One…"
"Two…"
The grip was becoming painful, and a few tears were trying to escape from her eyes. "And three..." when she was getting ready to possibly break her wrist, another shout came from the door. "¡¿AMANDA, WHAT ARE YOU DOING?!"
Her eyes, blurred by tears, couldn't see who had intervened. Only when she felt a strong push did she see a familiar brown-haired figure with a small ponytail.
"A-Akko, I..." Amanda tried to say, in total nervousness after being caught in the act.
"¡Y-you what, Amanda!"
"¡What is wrong with you! …H-how dare you try to break her wrist just to find out where Diana was?" she reproached with nervousness and anger. "Have you gone mad?"
Clearing her face with her other hand, she could finally see the situation clearly. Akko was standing in front of her, shielding her from the American who was only babbling. The small girl's body was trembling, and although she couldn't see her face, it was likely one she had never seen in her life.
After a few more exchanges that only served to drive Amanda away, she saw the girl turn around and, without asking any questions, grab her by the arm and they left the room, heading to what could be the infirmary.
.
.
Throughout the entire journey, they didn't say a single word. The only thing that remained was the gentle grip, which for some strange reason didn't bother her at all. Upon arriving at their destination, Akko opened the door and entered with her. The nurse, upon noticing the two new visitors, paused her report and looked towards them, asking, "How can I help you?"
The lady fixed her gaze on the two of them, and after a few seconds of looking at Akko for too long, she recognized her. "Ah, Miss Kagari, what brings you here again? Isn't this your fifth visit this week?" 'Hmm, so Akko comes to the infirmary several times a week,' Hannah thought as she tried to prevent her swollen hand from touching anything. 'Ah, that idiot has really hurt me.'
"No, it's not for me, Mrs. Wong, it's for her," the Japanese girl said as she pointed to Hannah's wrist. When Mrs. Wong turned and saw the swelling on Hannah's hand, she asked, "What happened to you, dear? How did you hurt yourself?" In her mind, the brunette thought, 'Did she notice the injury so quickly? Well, she is the school nurse for a reason.'
"Come closer, let me see the damage," Mrs. Wong said, and Hannah complied, extending her affected limb to her.
"OUCH!" Hannah exclaimed with tears in her eyes as Mrs. Wong applied some pressure here and there.
"Ummm," the older woman huffed. "Is it broken?" Akko asked behind her, a worried look on her face.
"No, luckily it didn't get that serious, but from what I felt, several muscles were injured, and if the situation had gotten a bit out of control, the wrist could have been broken," the nurse explained professionally.
"Phew," a sigh of relief came from both of them.
"So, what is the process to follow, Mrs. Wong?" asked the English girl, who had recovered first.
"First of all, you need to wear a wrist brace for a week, along with taking medicine for the inflammation. Needless to say, no broom riding or engaging in any risky activities," Nurse Wong explained. 'Great, just when there's a flight class exam coming up,' thought Hannah.
"By the way, you write with your right hand, don't you?" Mrs. Wong asked as she filled out her report. "Yes, ma'am," Hannah replied, feeling another twinge in her hand. "Then you won't be able to write for about three days," she continued. 'This could get worse. How am I going to take notes in class now?' Hannah thought as she stared at the ceiling, cursing internally.
.
.
After having the wrist brace secured and taking her first pills of the week, they left the infirmary. During the walk back to their dormitory, Hannah felt Akko glancing at her from the corner of her eye. A few times, she even saw Akko about to say something but hesitating to do so.
Already in the hallway leading to the dormitories and tired of the nervous glances, Hannah finally asked, "Akko, do you need something?" Akko, looking flustered by the question, opened and closed her mouth without saying a word.
"You've been looking at me strangely for a while now, and it's making me quite anxious. It's not easy to deal with that along with the constant pain in my hand," Hannah concluded, trying to push Akko to speak up.
"I-I'm sorry," she heard as she watched the girl bow 90 degrees. "I'm sorry for getting you involved in my problems. I-If I hadn't told Diana anything, this would never have happened."
"Akko, this has nothing to do with you," she replied as she raised her arm with the wrist brace.
"It does matter! If I... If I..." the girl replied, now standing with tears in her eyes.
"Look, if this bothers you so much, we could do one thing," she said, trying to calm the girl.
"I'll do anything you ask if that can fix this," the Japanese girl said with determination and commitment.
"Again, it's not your fault... Aaaaaaa, never mind. Look, if you want, you can take notes for me in these three days of class, and that way, you can pay me back for what you obviously didn't do," she said. It was true that she could ask Diana or Barbara, but she knew that Akko wouldn't leave her alone if she didn't give her something to do. Besides, even though she didn't want to admit it, she didn't want to see her cry.
"O-Okay, I'll do it, and you'll see that they will be the best notes you've ever seen," she said this time with a small smile, not quite the same as her usual one, but something was better than nothing.
And so, while the brown-haired girl rushed to her side of the dorm, that feeling she had experienced a few days ago was slowly spreading through Hannah's body.
