The Great Mouse Detective

Ratigan's Revenge

The Fall

Ratigan had completely lost his mind, he was fueled by hatred for that miserable little pipsqueak. Basil had thwarted his plans one too many times. This time was the last straw, for one single moment he had an entire kingdom under his thumb but now the dream was dead. All because of Basil of Baker Street, his cape was caught in the gears of Big Ben but as he watched his enemy get away with the girl his mentality broke. Rage coursed through Ratigan's brain and body as he ran after Basil. His cape tore away as did more of his clothing as he ran and scurried after his foe. Basil would not get away from him, he would make Basil pay. Ratigan spotted Basil ahead as he tried to pass the girl over to Flabishum and the doctor. He leaped at his target and latched onto Basil. They were momentarily in the air before falling down the side of Big Ben before finally landing on the hands that told London the hour. Ratigan was dazed for a moment then he looked for his prey, he spotted Basil and grabbed him around the neck and growled like a wild animal. Basil slipped out of the hold and scurried away. Ratigan growled, "There's no escape this time Basil.. Grrr." He leaped in front of Basil and extended his claws, normally because Ratigan was a classy sort, he took extreme measures to conceal them but now he let them free. Soon began scratching, clawing and bashing Basil around like a helpless child. With great satisfaction Ratigan heard Basil grunt and cry out in pain with each blow until he had him at the edge of the clock's hour hand. He spotted Basil's friends coming and with one last swipe of his arm he knocked Basil off Big Ben, watching him fall. Feeling overjoyed he celebrated and cried, "I'VE WON!!!" and laughed hysterically until he heard Basil's voice, "On the contrary.. The game isn't over yet!" Peering down he spotted Basil holding onto what remained of his wrecked airship and he heard the ringing of a bell… the bell he kept in his pocket but now it was gone. The hour soon struck and Big Ben's bell rang out loudly for all of London to hear. The vibrations were so powerful that it caused Ratigan to fall downward towards his death but he would not go alone, he grabbed Basil and dragged him down down down. However to Ratigan's horror he watched as Basil used the propeller from his airship to stop his fall and carry him up to safety. The runt had escaped him one last time. Ratigan screamed with fury as he continued to plunge to his death. The search for Ratigan's body carried on for hours, however there was no trace of his body, not even a sign of where he would have landed. The search party was eventually forced to believe that his body was taken away by either a human or a hungry cat which ended their search. After all, he fell off of Big Ben.. There was no way he could survive such a fall. That didn't stop the rumors, however the officials and Basil of Baker Street were confident that Ratigan was gone for good.

The American

Hello dear reader, by now I'm sure you know who I am but in case you didn't know or happen to be unfamiliar with my works. I am Dr. David Q Dawson. For the past few years I have had the most amazing adventures alongside my good friend Basil of Baker Street. Many of you might have read about some of our exploits since I have taken to writing down each adventure for publication. The story I now wish to share brings us back to Baker Street where I first met that amazing mouse detective. I'm not entirely sure if I will publish this adventure due to some personal material, in any case I must write down everything that occurred. Basil at this time was most agitated for he had been striving to eradicate Ratigan's old criminal empire. After the death of that fiend there was something of a civil war in his empire. Ratigan had only a few lieutenants to help him run this organization but that was enough for all of them to try to seize power, however none of them were up to the task. Formidable they all were but none of them were quite as clever or brilliant as the late villain. At first Basil and I were able to assist the police in tearing down the criminal empire. However a year ago we received word that someone had successfully taken control of Ratigan's empire and was slowly repairing the damage that Basil and I had worked hard to destroy. The maddening thing was, that we couldn't figure out who had taken over. It wasn't any of his old lieutenants from what we are to understand and it was a well kept secret. No one in the criminal underworld could tell us who had taken over. Which drove Basil to playing his violin excessively day and night. When he wasn't playing his violin he was working on some sort of elaborate experiment. A break came into the case when an american mouse came knocking on our door in the middle of the night. Miss Judson had answered the door and let the mouse in then she woke Basil who in turn woke me up. There in the living room was a male mouse of average height. He had brown hair that combed over to the side and a well trimmed beard. His suit was well kept and he seemed agitated himself. I was rather annoyed at having been awakened from my sleep and I asked, "Good sir, who might you be and couldn't this have waited until morning?" The stranger's expression changed and looked sympathetic then replied, "I am sorry for bothering you two so late but I just arrived in London and I have traveled all the way here from America to see Basil of Baker Street.. I assure you it's urgent." Basil stepped up from behind me with a smile, "But of course dear fellow, have a seat. I can see from your wrinkled jacket and the bags under your eyes that you haven't slept much. Therefore your business must be dire." The stranger nodded, "That is correct.. Thank you.." Basil offered the chap some tea but he declined. Once everyone was seated he began his tale by introducing himself.

"My name is James Carter, I'm a private detective in the state of Utah which of course is located in America." Basil lit his pipe and asked, "Utah.. that became a state about four years ago correct?" James nodded, "That's right, I'm one of the first mice in Utah to carry a private detective badge. I think one or two other mice received their badges before I did but I don't know for certain, I'm satisfied to be among the first.. Anyway, recently I was hired to watch the residence of a wealthy mouse by the name of Ford. He lives in a house owned by a human whose name also is Ford. From my knowledge the human's father built his house when they came to Utah before it was a state. Ford the mouse, his grandfather had migrated to Utah with his family and they took on the name Ford. Well recently someone has been robbing the Ford Estate and it's being blamed on Ford the mouse and his family. I was hired to catch the crooks so that the thefts would stop and the family would be safe from the human's wrath. For they heard the humans talking about getting a.. Cat." Hearing this I exclaimed, "How dreadful!" James nodded in agreement then continued, "So I watched the house at night and for three nights in a row nothing happened but upon the fourth night I heard a low commotion coming from one of the rooms. It belonged to a human lady and I soon spotted four shadows just outside a jewelry box. I took out my gun carefully and lit a match. I called out to the figures and told them not to move because I was prepared to shoot. All of them looked like mice but one was a rat with his back turned to me. He turned around and smiled at me saying, "But of course dear fellow.. We wouldn't want anyone getting hurt." His smile was wicked and I recognized him but I knew it had to be a mistake.. Basil.. I blinked several times and I even pinched myself but the rat I saw was the late Professor Ratigan.."

Basil and I froze but Basil recovered faster than I did. "Nonsense my dear fellow. Ratigan is dead, the doctor and I both saw him fall to his death." James sighed, "I know all about that.. I've read Dr. Dawson's book on that case many times and I have studied Ratigan's face from a painting provided in the book as well as the multiple photographs and paintings seen in newspaper clippings. I realize what I say sounds impossible.. But I tell you I saw him." Basil puffed hard on his pipe for a moment, he seemed to be considering something then spoke again, "I'm sorry dear fellow but it couldn't be him.. Ratigan is dead." James then replied, "Yes as I said I remember reading about it in the paper and book about how you two defeated Ratigan but I tell you it was him… that or someone impersonating him.. There was something that was off about him. His face had scars, deep ones." Basil looked James in the eye, "Hmm.. an impersonator.. That is possible but there are many questions that come to mind.. Such as what would this 'Ratigan' be doing all the way in America?" James nodded and said in reply, "That's one of the questions I was hoping you could shed some light on.. Since you knew him best." Basil sat there with his pipe not speaking for a long moment until, "It may be necessary for us to accompany you back to America to investigate for ourselves… James Carter was it?" James nodded in response, "That's correct." Basil nodded, "Well Mr. Carter, before anything else.. I want to hear the rest of your story. Please pick up where you left off."

James nodded and did as instructed, "Well Ratigan could clearly see I was stunned and took advantage of that by throwing his cane at me. Before I could react, it caused me to drop my gun then his goons rushed me. I fought the three by myself as best I could but I was soon overwhelmed and they held me as Ratigan approached. This is when I got a good look at him, I noted all his features and compared it to the photos and art I've seen of him and he was spot on.. Except for one thing.. The scars on his face. One looks something like a star. He smiled down at me then searched me until he found my badge, "Mouseton National Detective Agency, So you're a private detective? Well congratulations! You caught the villains." Both he and his goons laughed at me. "But sadly.. You were unable to hold onto them.. Toss him boys." Ratigan had his goons toss me off the wardrobe where the jewelry box was kept." Listening to James' story I gasped and interrupted, "But how did you survive? A drop like that might have killed you or left you severely injured." James replied to my question, "Your right I should have been severely harmed but luckily for me the goons have terrible aim. Instead of throwing me straight onto the floor they threw me and I landed on the cushioned chair next to the wardrobe. I bounced a few times before ending up on the floor unconscious. I was found the next morning by my employer before the humans could find me. He informed me that a pearl necklace was taken this time and I explained what happened but left out the identity of Ratigan. Basil the idea of Ratigan returning is incredible.. I knew if I was going to stand a chance in stopping him or this imposter, whatever he is, I need to know everything I can learn about him and you're the best expert on Ratigan I could find. I tried sending a message out to you but received nothing in return. I assumed my letters got lost in transit. So I traveled for days on a wagon, train and ship to get here and find you."

When James had finished his story I looked to my friend as he thought on the matter. He asked James a few more questions and once he was satisfied Basil stood up and put his pipe down. "I do not believe Ratigan is alive.. It's impossible however I am convinced you saw a Rat that looks exactly like him. If he's anything like the real Ratigan there is a possibility he is the one I have been looking for." Immediately I realized what he was insinuating, "Basil, you mean this impostor or ghoul could be the one running Ratigan's empire?" Basil's smile widened, "Precisely Doctor.. Who else would be able to stop a civil war between Ratigan's lieutenants? Ratigan himself or someone they believed was Ratigan back from the dead. HaHaaaa! Doctor! Mr. Carter here has provided the key we've been looking for. Doctor, get some sleep because in the morning we will pack our bags and follow Mr. James Carter to Utah!" Basil was most energetic, he got like that when he was excited about a case but I wasn't looking forward to going. From what I had heard and would soon find to be correct, Utah was a desert and the summers were hot. Miss. Judson brought James a few pillows and a blanket and he slept on the sofa. Soon I was able to climb back into bed and it wasn't long before I was asleep again.

Our Voyage

The next morning we made all the necessary arrangements and were soon aboard ship to sail directly to America. Being on ship again reminded me of my time serving in Afghanistan, I didn't like the motion of the sea then and I certainly didn't care for it as we traveled to New York City. I was looking forward to our arrival and not only because I wanted dry land under my feet again but I have always wanted to see that great city that Americans are so proud of. I also hoped I would get to see Lady Liberty, that fine symbol of freedom built by the French. Both Men and Mice built that mighty statue and the Americans treasured it greatly, of course I couldn't blame them. When I wasn't confined to quarters due to sea sickness I was able to join Basil as we got to know our new American friend. I came to learn he was a clever mouse, not quite on Basil's level but he seemed able to keep up with Basil just fine. This to say the least impressed me, for anyone who can keep up or even challenge Basil is quite extraordinary in my eyes.

I turned to James and asked him about his home life in the west. "Well Doctor, in my area there isn't much. There are small towns right now so there's some Wild West activity that still occurs but not so much in Salt Lake City. That area is thriving, you'll see that when we arrive in Utah. Once we get to New York we can ride the train all the way there, from Salt Lake we will have to ride a wagon train." James said. I was unfamiliar with this term and asked about it, Basil looked up from his newspaper to reply, "A wagon train is a group of wagons that travel across great distances together in order to provide protection from Bandits and hostile American Indians." I nodded and James added, "Fortunately the tribes that live in Utah are friendly, so there will only be Bandits to worry about."

The day was spent getting to know our new American friend. He shared his own adventures as a private detective. Some were very wild but then again that's why they call it the wild west I suppose. James' mood darkened when Basil asked him about a mouse named Anthony Dexter. "Who is this Anthony Dexter you speak of Basil? I have never heard of him." I asked since James was staring off into the sea. While Basil waited on James he answered my question, "Anthony Dexter is a cannibal mouse Doctor. He was under Ratigan's employment for some time before we defeated him." I was quite astonished as you can understand. "A.. a… a cannibal? How dreadfully monstrous.." James then chose this moment to speak. "That he is Dr. Dawson… I don't like talking about him but.. If it will help with this case then I will tell you about it. Anthony Dexter is a monster as you observed. Where to begin… well Anthony Dexter originated in London England, he once served the crown and went on an expedition to the dark jungles of Africa. It was there I believe that he became exposed to cannibalism.. Where he must have eaten mice to survive but it didn't stop when he returned. Anthony is a grasshopper mouse you see, their ancestors were predators." I sat there on the edge of my seat, amazed by what I had heard but I kept silent as James continued.

"Somewhere in that jungle he tapped into his ancestral instincts and desires.. Becoming a cannibal. We have no idea of how many mice or rats he's eaten over the years.. I doubt he even knows. When I came into the picture, there had been a few bodies found with their.. Brains missing." I couldn't understand why this monster would leave a body behind when he was a cannibal. Basil saw my confusion and explained, "You see Doctor he was known as the Brain Snatcher in the papers because apparently the thing he loved to eat most was the brain. The more intelligent you were, the more tasty you were in his mind." I felt sick when James nodded to confirm what Basil had said. "Surely no mouse of this modern age could be that.. That.. sickening…" I uttered, it took me a moment to recover enough for James to continue.

"Well I was investigating the murders because the wife of one of the victims hired me to find the killer. At first it took time because no other bodies had been found. It wasn't until I met the mouse himself.. At the time Anthony was a police officer in my hometown of St. George. He was.. Charismatic and kind but for some reason when I looked into his eyes I saw something.. Evil and hungry.. But that's my own curse. I can normally look at a person and tell things about them just by looking at their eyes. Anyway.. The point is I did not trust him one bit though his personality suggested he was the most trustworthy mouse in utah. So I kept an eye on him until one day I observed him acting out of the ordinary.. Following him I found his secret hide away.. I also discovered his latest victim or what was left. He spotted me and we fought, he was exceptionally strong but I managed to knock him out then I alerted the police. He was taken away and we searched the place, finding bones with teeth marks matching Anthony's. We realized why there were no more bodies found and after interrogating him we learned about his eating habits. How he preferred to eat mice or rats that were.. On the large side.. And he prized the brain above all.. He was eventually transferred to an insane asylum in Salt Lake City with a special containment facility created just for him.. May he rot in there and I hope I never see him again." Basil listened carefully, saying not a word and sat there thinking when James finished his tale. When Basil spoke I was stunned, "It will be necessary to arrange an interview with him.. He worked for Ratigan for years before moving to America. I need to find out what he might know about this.. Imposter we chase after." James did not look thrilled. However he seemed to understand Basil's reasoning and nodded. "When we get to New York we can send a message by telegraph and see about arranging an appointment…"

Basil nodded with gratitude, "I assured you it is necessary Mr. Carter. I realize I'm asking a lot of you but it must be done." James nods and assures us he understands then he excused himself to stretch his legs a bit. It was at this time I happened to notice a rather charming white mouse. She had blue eyes and wore a lovely violet dress with a blue wrap around her. The more I studied her the more she seemed familiar to me. I leaned towards Basil to get his opinion on the girl. He opened one eye for he had laid his head back to think deeply, "That must be Miss Kitty, you will remember her from the Rat Trap Pub on our first case together doctor." Looking back at her it all came back to me, I did in fact remember her now. She was the lead singer and burlesque dancer at that filthy establishment. However she looked very different now, more like a proper lady. "I wonder what she is doing here?" I asked, I was quick to judge because the bar kept had drugged the drinks they had given us. Basil was smart enough not to drink the brew but I fell for it and made a fool of myself. "I believe she's leaving London to start a new life." I asked him why he thought that and Basil responded, "I can see the one way ticket to America tucked into the sash of her dress Doctor. Most mice who leave London with a one way ticket are usually those who are going to America to start over with the hopes of a better life. So I wouldn't be too hasty in judging her my good fellow, it wasn't her who made the fool out of you." I blushed at that and went silent. However I continued to observe her, I knew Basil was right but I must admit I found it difficult to trust her. Suddenly a ball belonging to humans came flying in her direction, James attempted to pull her out of danger but she was trying to pull away. This disagreement of which way to run caused them both to be knocked off the side. We all ran to the rail to see their fate but were amazed when we saw James and Miss Kitty alive. James had held to her arm tightly and managed to grab a tiny ledge. A ledge just curved and small enough for his hand to grab. He appeared to be in pain which didn't surprise me since I could tell his arm had become dislocated in saving the girl. With the help of the mouse crew of the ship we retrieved them both. I looked the girl over and determined her to be alright aside from a bruise on her chest from where the ball had hit her. As for James I was correct, his arm had become dislocated and with Basil's help I set it back into place for him. Miss Kitty looked over and gently inquired of James when I told her he was going to be just fine her behavior changed dramatically. She stood and with anger in her voice, "What were you thinking?! You nearly got us killed!" James was shocked by her ungratefulness and returned, "I was trying to save you! Had you not fought me I would have had us both out of harm's way!" They continued this until the ship's captain interrupted. "ENOUGH I SAY! From what I heard it doesn't matter who's fault it was. You still owe him your life, he could have let you go when his arm became dislocated instead of letting you go. I think you two need to agree that the important thing is everyone is safe so put your pride aside immediately." Both looked away but both acknowledged the captain's orders.

Soon the Captain made the crowd disperse then he himself left. The four of us were soon all that remained and there was silence for a moment that seemed to last ages. It was Miss Kitty who broke the silence and she did it with a raised voice, "Thank you!" James replied similarly, "Your Welcome!" Then Miss Kitty stormed out of sight, I was speechless but Basil seemed unfazed by the whole thing. "Well done James! You demonstrated bravery and strength today, this will be most useful to us in the adventure ahead! Now if only we could just get to America!" I shook my head at my friend, I knew how anxious he was to begin the search for Ratigan or whomever the rat is but he needed to be patient. It turned to James and prescribed him to rest. His arm would be alright but he needed rest. That would not be the last time we saw Miss Kitty, in fact we bumped into her a number of times on the rest of the voyage. Each time however she would give James a scowl that James would return. On the last night of the voyage, I had taken a nap out on a chair outside after dinner. I awoke when I heard a door open, it was Miss Kitty. She had come outside to gaze at the stars but found James in the same spot she wanted to be in. She sighed then decided to approach James. She stood next to him but kept her distance and said civilly, "Evening.." James looked over and was surprised to see her there and replied in the same civilized tone, "Good Evening…" She was silent for a moment then continued, "I wanted to… I'm sorry for being angry with you.. I.. I over reacted." James kept his eyes on the stars above them, "I.. it's alright.. I understand.. it was a tense situation and we ended up nearly getting killed." They stood silent for several minutes, saying nothing but looking upward at the stars that twinkled like diamonds. I remained silent, pretending to be asleep still. James finally turned and introduced himself, "I am James Carter." He extended his hand to her. She turned to him and after a shrug she shook his hand. "Mis.. er-I mean Katherine Silver." After shaking hands they looked up at the night sky again. James after a time commented on the stars and how beautiful they looked, she hesitantly agreed. "Something wrong Miss Silver?" James had asked as he looked over at her. Having noticed her hesitation, "I am.. just fine. I'm just not looking to make conversation right now." James nodded and went back to looking at the stars. This was painful to watch, it had the makings of a romance story but the cast was making a mess of it. I made a show of yawning and made it appear I was just waking up. "James dear boy? What time is it?" James whirled around and quickly took out his pocket watch, "It's.. oh it's nearly midnight Doctor." I stood up quickly and joined my young friend. "Well then we best turn in.." Miss Kitty or rather Katherine I suppose looked at me strangely, "You look familiar sir.." I blushed recalling the events that occurred at the Rat Trap. Her face changed to one of remembrance and pointed at me, "You… I remember you.. yes you were the one who came on stage drunk. You danced with my sisters then fell off the stage breaking Joe's piano which started a brawl." James looked over at me confused. In truth when I wrote about my first adventure with Basil I might have.. forgotten a certain detail. I felt embarrassed then nodded. "Dr David Q Dawson at your service.."

I proceeded to explain the situation to her and even told her about being drugged as Basil later explained to me. She was ready to believe it for it seems the barkeeper at the time use to work for Ratigan and was instructed to perform such low handed deeds. When all was said and done I had a better outlook on this young lady. I felt she might prove to be an interesting mouse but she felt guarded. Though I tried my best to learn more about her, she would not reveal much. After a time she would only say, "I go to America to start over.. I.. it was time for me to leave the Rat Trap." James could tell there was nothing more she wanted to say on the matter so he took the opportunity to excuse us, "We best turn in, it was nice to make your acquaintance.. properly this time Miss Silver." He extended his good hand to her and she shook it. "Likewise Mr Carter… and it was nice getting to know you better Doctor." I nodded graciously and followed James inside. The next day we packed our things and made ready for landing. As we drew closer I gazed with delight in seeing the famous Statue of Liberty. My heart swelled with pride in being a mouse for it is known by all that both human and mouse built that great structure. Even Basil seemed captivated by this titanic marvel of the modern world. James was just as memorized as I was. The three of us gazed upon it until the ship passed it by. Much later we were off the ship and made our way to a hotel where we had arranged to stay. True to his word, James sent a message by telegraph that we wished to meet with Anthony Dexter. Our train was not due to depart until tomorrow so we decided to have a fine dinner while we waited to hear back from Salt Lake City.

The Artist

When we returned from dinner we found that we had been left an invitation from an unknown source. The invincibility was complimentary seats at the The Marx' Club. It is a very respectable establishment according to the desk clerk when we questioned him about it. They had music, drinks and one of the best live performances in the United States. Basil preferred not to attend but James and I managed to bring him along. We arrived outside the club where we spotted a familiar face. It was Katherine, she was at the entrance looking none too happy with the dormouse. As we approached we discovered that she wanted to get in but they were only accepting those with an invitation. For all the other seats were taken, as we came closer she noticed us and her face brightened. "Well good evening gentlemen, I didn't expect to see you again." She said in a more welcoming tone than last night. We asked what was going on and she explained the situation. She had an invitation but it was taken on her way over to the club. Basil solved the situation by inviting her to join us, for the invasion read, "For Basil of Baker Street and company" She was delighted and most grateful to us and soon we were welcomed inside. We found our table and sat down, Basil seemed agitated as his eyes roamed everywhere. "I say Basil, what has so you upset?" Without looking at me he answered, "I'm trying to figure out who our benefactor is… we were given high class seats and no one should have known where we were staying.." Before more could be said the music began to play and the lights dimmed around us. The stage was lit up as a female figure walked onto the stage. Before the spot light came on Basi stiffened beside me, I realized he must recognize who it was and when the light shined on her I too stiffened. For it was Mademoiselle Relda, The lady was truly beautiful with long curling hair like gold. Even her eyes and fur seemed to shine with flecks of gold. "Mademoiselle Relda.." I uttered and Basil replied, "Now I know who our benefactor is.." James turned to Basil, "Ahh of course you know her, Dr. Dawson talked about her in one of the books he wrote. So she is the one who invited us here or rather.. Invite you Basil." Basil sighed and gave a nod.

Mademoiselle Relda came into our lives a year ago when Basil and I became involved in a case. I recall naming that particular adventure… A Scandal in Covent Garden. Relda was involved because she was accused of having had some stolen documents concerning a high ranking official.. Who will remain nameless. The Official for a time had been courting Mademoiselle Relda you see, however when he met another young lady who was of higher class the Official broke their relationship off. Months later a mouse matching her description had broken into his home then stole very sensitive documents that were not only important to him but to the entire country. Basil and I had been brought into the case at this point. Tasked with finding the documents for Relda, although the chief suspect had an ironclad alibi. A room full of mice in fact, for she had been singing for a charity function and yet the motive was too strong to dismiss Relda entirely. Basil and I met with Mademoiselle Relda for the first time to interview her, let me tell you it was a strange sight. For you see until this point I had begun to believe that Basil was incapable of.. Well feeling affection for the fair sex. We had met with many lovely ladies but none ever interested him. At first things were normal, Basil was all business in his questioning but as she answered him I detected a strange connection between them. Visibly there was nothing I could notice to give off such an idea but then Relda began asking Basil questions. Soon it became apparent he enjoyed talking with her, especially when they spoke of music. Relda would ask him about his violin playing and he gladly went into discussion about it. I was completely baffled by the whole thing, eventually I convinced Basil we had to leave. However.. During the entire case Basil paid three more visits to Mademoiselle Relda, one of which I was there but there were two other times in which I wasn't present. I don't know what occurred and Basil will never tell me but I have a feeling in his own way.. He was falling for her. We solved the case, and discovered it was Relda's understudy who had framed her. She was so insanely devoted to Relda that she sought revenge on her mistress' behalf. She even tried to blackmail the Official for money but thanks to Basil she was arrested. Poor thing was committed into one of those asylums. Shortly after Relda announced she was going on tour around Europe, after this announcement I noticed Basil's behavior had changed. He obsessed on the destruction of Ratigan's empire, he was almost alway cross about something which made it unbearable to those around him. Eventually he snapped out of it when I lost my temper and told him off. Explaining how disagreeable he had become and why I felt this was so. He was silent then he sobered up and the next morning he was his old self again.

Back to the present, Mademoiselle Relda strode across the stage with such grace and ease I wondered if she was an angel. As for Basil, he sat there looking stern and collected as usual but his eyes were fully set on her. Never once did he look away from her. The first song had ended and the room erupted in applause. As she looked out at her audience she purposely seeked out our table, once she spotted Basil their eyes locked on each other. The silence didn't last for Relda raised her arm and motioned Basil to join her on stage. Without fail Basil stood up and was given a violin to play. With a sweet smile on Relda's face she said to Basil, "Give me a tune… and make it a challenge if you please." She said this with a wink but Basil's face never changed, it was cool and reserved. Without looking away he checked the violin over to make sure it was properly tuned to his satisfaction then he played. Relda's smile grew when he began to play, soon after she sang. All were on the edge of their seats, even I was, as we marveled at them. Watching them perform you would have thought This was all part of the act and yet I knew somehow this was not rehearsed. The chemistry between them was so precise that they could just play their part and turn it into a beautiful performance. They did this with three other songs then Relda took a bow while Basil modestly bowed his head once. He returned the violin to a stage hand then they came to our table where Relda seated herself with James pushing her chair in. Basil had gone back to his seat looking annoyed with Relda's presence. "Well thank you sir, I don't believe we've met before. I am Mademoiselle Relda." James bowed before taking his seat, "James Carter, Mademoiselle. Basil and Dawson I believe you've me and this is Katherine Silver. She is an acquaintance of ours we met on the ship that brought us here from London." Katherine nodded, "I loved your performance, I myself am in the entertainment business. I've come to America to start over and become a true artist in music." Relda looked upon her with interest, "Ahh so you are a fellow performer? Which field may I ask?" Katherine looked slightly embarrassed but seemed to brace herself and embrace who she was, "I sing Mademoiselle, most of my life the only form of work I could get was working as a burlesque girl in a pub but that's why I'm here in America. I'm in a position to start over and strive for a lifelong dream." Relda brightened, "Really? I find that most inspiring. I myself started from the bottom but thanks to my family I had a much easier road to get where I am… Let's see what you can do. Join me for a duet, I'll let you start and I'll join in." Katherine was astonished by her words and even more by the offer to sing along with the great Relda. She said not a word but joined Relda on stage, after a word with the orchestra they took their places on stage. On cue from the conductor, Katherine began to sing. It was that same enchanting voice I heard on my first case with Basil. Soon Relda joined in the song and their voices harmonized beautifully. Basil of course seemed unimpressed but James sat there watching with great interest. His eyes were fixed on Katherine, he coughed and blushed when he caught me noticing his reaction. Basil shook his head and rolled his eyes. The crowd cheered at the end of the first song, Relda gave Katherine a look of approval then had her stay on stage to perform a few more songs together.

After their duets Relda excused Katherine to sit back down while she gave the audience one last number which left the audience speechless but their applause roared through the room. Relda showered with rose petals and the manager of the establishment presented her with a bouquet of mouse roses. Which is a highly favored flower species since they are the only flower that is just the right size for a mouse. Humans haven't discovered them yet but some day I'm sure they will. Relda left the stage but not before inviting all of us at our table to meet her at her dressing room. We gave her a moment to switch out of the gown she had been performing in before we knocked. She called for us to enter and she sat there working on her hair while wearing a green silk kimono. "First I'd like to congratulate you Miss Silver, you have a wonderful voice and you can certainly make it far.. WITH the right influences of course. So I have decided to take you as my pupil. Not that you need a mentor but you could use some training when it comes to performing in high class establishments." Katherine was clearly overjoyed, this had been better then she could ever hope for. She kneed down beside Relda kissing her hands and thanking her. "Please, please.. That is not necessary. Now, tomorrow I board the train for Salt Lake City in Utah. Will you be able to join me?" Relda asked, "Oh yes, yes that won't be a problem at all!" Relda instructed her to make arrangements with her belongings and that they were to be brought to the hotel Relda was staying in. Which to our surprise happened to be the same hotel we were staying in. Basil smirked at Relda, "So that is how you knew we were staying there.. You must have spotted us there in the hotel when my back was turned." Relda smiled, "Indeed it is, I was in the dining room and spotted you as you entered the stairway. Using my influence it was easy to have the invitation sent to your room. I so do love the idea that I was able to surprise you Basil. Forgive my rudeness Dr. Dawson, it is wonderful to see you again and a pleasure to make your acquaintance Mr. Carter." We both bowed to the lady, "Indeed Mademoiselle, a real privilege to see you again." I replied. "So tell me, what brings you three to New York and so far away from London Basil-Wasie." James and I both turned to Basil to see his reaction to the unfamiliar nickname. He paid no attention to our stares and kept the same smirk, "We are on a case, one of great importance that will take us to Utah." He replied, "Oh really? So does that mean you leave on the train tomorrow?" Relda asked with what I thought sounded hopeful. "Indeed we do! We have arrangements to meet with a peculiar mouse then we will begin an approximate fifteen journey by wagon to St. George Utah." Relda sat there twirling her golden hair with one finger, "Hmm.. I am not familiar with St. George and why would you travel by covered wagon? Do they not have a train going in that direction?" James took a step forward, "No Mademoiselle, St. George is a much smaller town located in the southwest corner of Utah. Right now the only way to get there is by covered wagon." Relda considered this and nodded, "I see, well you have quite the journey ahead of you." She turned her gaze back to Basil with a smile, "Well maybe you can spare some time to come see me on the train since we will be traveling to Utah at the same time. I have so missed you Basil." Basil's smirk vanished and wore a mask of indifference, "I suppose if I have the time. There is much information I must gather and think about before reaching our destination." Relda giggled and offered her hand to Basil, to our surprise he actually took it. He bowed down as though to kiss it but his lips never touched her hand. Instead he stood there in place like that for a moment then rose again, "Until next time Mademoiselle." Then he was walking out of the room, we gave Relda our best wishes then ran to catch up to Basil.

The Train

The next day we loaded ourselves into the train that was bound for Salt Lake City. Basil James and I were in a private car together getting ourselves settled. As I sat down in my seat I noticed James wore a gun holster with a gun strapped in. He hadn't worn that before and I inquired about it, "We are going out west Dr. Dawson. We will be safe while we get out to Utah but I rather have my pistol handy and not need it." I nodded and inquired about how often he had to use his gun, "It depends.. I practice at least three times a week. I'll use it more if there's trouble with predators or the Red Sash Gang." I shook my head at this, "I should think with all all the dangers involved.. A civilized mouse wouldn't dream of settling in such a land." James laughed, "Well mice have a spirit for adventure, Doctor. Without a willingness to travel and seek out new lands to settle in.. well there wouldn't be very many cities in the world. The west is a wild place to live but it also has its beauty and.. It's home. As more come into the area to settle down and start new the area will grow. One day it might not be so wild anymore but until then we fight hard for what we have." Basil, "Even New York City was once a wild and untamed land except for the natives who lived here. Now look at it Dawson, it's a thriving metropolis." I looked out our window and gazed upon the city as the train rolled out of the station. We all watched as New York City vanished in the distance and turned our attention to the adventure ahead. Basil turned to James, "And everything is arranged for our arrival at the Asylum?" James sighed, this had not been a fun subject or assignment for him. However he trusted Basil and had made the arrangements, "Yes, they will be expecting us. They are going to make sure there is enough security when we arrive to interview him." Basil nodded and clapped James on the back, "Excellent! I realize this has not been easy James however as you well know, the more information we have on a case the better." James nodded and looked to the window, he suddenly began studying something but before I could ask him what the matter was he grabbed both myself and Basil and threw the tree of us to the floor. Glass shattered and fell down on us as something punched through the window. "SNIPER ONE SHOT PER ROUND!!!" James shouted to Basil who sat up to look through the broken window. "OUT! Let's chase him down! He will be headed for the next Car!" Basil said as he got up and ran out of the room. James helped me up and we ran after Basil. We ran down the corridor like a flash, dodging other passengers as we went. We reached the end and we spotted our would be assassin, he appeared to be stuck, "Haha! We've got him now, fellows! Dawson keep the passengers back! James with me!" I turned to keep the curious group that was growing from approaching. There was no telling if that assassin would shoot again. Basil and James climbed up the passenger walkway, normally this wouldn't be a problem but with a moving train it swayed a bit which did slow them down some. The assassin spotted them and aimed his sniper rifle again, James whipped out his pistol and fired. The bullet hit the rifle which surprised the assassin, causing him to drop his weapon which fell down into the tracks below. "Well done James, let's get our mouse!" Basil said as he began moving forward again. He then focused on freeing his boot, it had become wedged between two fasteners on the cable he had been walking on. Basil once within ear shot shouted out, "Surrender! There is nowhere for you to go!" James and Basil approached carefully, James still had his pistol out for the assassin to see. Once his foot was free he drew out three knives, one in each hand then his tail held the third. I couldn't believe what I was seeing, James tried to get around Basil but there wasn't enough form and the assassin struck out. James jumped back and pulled Basil with him to avoid the assassin's attacks. Once James had a clear shoot, he took out each knife. "Right on the money James! Now as for you!" Basil said, getting to his feet. The assassin looked up and noted a cable he could jump for and escape, however Basil had a better view from their angle, "Don't try it! It's not as close as you think!" He tried to warn but the assassin leaped up and latched onto the side of the cable but then he began to slip. Basil noted something dangling from the assassin's neck just before the mouse slipped and fell under the wheels of the tracks.

Much later after calming the passengers and getting a new cabin, the three of us sat there thinking about the events that occurred. Once I had given Basil enough time to think I asked him who the assassin was and why he tried to kill us. "Who he was, I cannot say Doctor.. His face was covered but I believe he was a member of the League of Claw.. They are trained assassins who lend out their members for hire. Obviously he was hired to kill us. Someone doesn't want us sniffing around." James held the bullet that was recovered, he had been studying it after it was extracted from the wall. "Ratigan?" James asked helpfully. "Or whoever is pretending to be him.. But yes I believe he knows we are coming. After their run in with you, the imposter must have kept tabs on you. Especially when you left St. George.. He has probably had someone watching for you ever since you came to find me." James shook his head, "I should have figured.. Should have been more careful." Basil smiled then replied, "Come now my friend, Ratigan was a clever fiend in his day. Whomever is taking over the criminal empire he left behind, must be just as devious and clever as the Rat himself. Unless you had been used to dealing with him, you had no way of knowing. What is important now is that we proceed with caution. We assume he knows that not only you have returned but you returned with the Great Basil of Baker Street." This seemed to cheer James up some, "Do you think there is another assassin on the train Basil?" I asked as I cautiously checked to make sure the curtains were shut properly. "Not to worry old fellow, the League only ever sends one at a time. Had he succeeded he would not be able to send word of the assassination until the next stop. Which won't be until.. Tomorrow morning." James sat up, "What happens if they don't hear from him?" Basil sat back, "They will assume he had not been successful however they won't attempt to reach out to him until the train arrives in Salt Lake City. They never know when their assassins will make the kill, so they wait patiently to hear back from them. So never fear, we have time. However.. Once we reach Salt Lake City we MUST be on guard." I sat back to relax myself then asked, "But Basil.. How can you be sure that the assassin belongs to the.. Uhh.. League of..?" I couldn't remember at the time what he had called it, "The League of Claw, from his neck I saw the medallion which had their symbol on it. At least I'm certain it was their symbol, I couldn't get a clear look at it but however it fits what I know about them." I chuckled and allowed myself to get lost in the book I had bought for the trip.

That night we connected with Relda, her manager and Katherine for dinner. They questioned us about the assassination attempt, which we left to Basil to tell. The mushroom and cheese soap I was eating was so delicious I couldn't stop eating. "My, how terrifying.. You must be used to that sort of thing." Katherine said to Basil, she turned to James asking, "What about you Mr. Carter? Are you used to having an assassin after you?" James wiped his lip off the soup before replying, "Well not that exact scenario but I have been in plenty of life or death situations." James explained some of the dangers he usually faces from day to day and she listened with great interest. "You sound like a real cowboy, like in the story magazines." James laughed out at that, "Well some of those come close to what happens in reality but they do tend to exaggerate things in order to make the story more exciting." James replied. Relda laughed to herself then explained herself, "Sorry Mr. Carter, in some ways you remind me of Basil. I have had a similar conversation with Basil and he responded with something very similar." Relda looked over at Basil with what I would say to be a flirtatious smile. Basil rolled his eyes again, trying to focus on his meal.

I am happy to report that the rest of our journey by train was uneventful. Other than when James and I accidentally stumbled upon a private conversation between Relda and Basil. James suggested we come back later but both of us however seemed unable to move. Relda spoke first, "Honestly Basil how long are you going to be so.. So.. COLD?!" Basil replied with a sarcastic tone, "Frankly my dear woman, I have no idea what you are talking about.." Relda sighed, "Are you still bent out of shape over that?" Basil, "Bent out of shape you say? What reason do I have to be.. "Bent out of Shape?" As you put it?" I could tell by his tone that Basil was unhappy and I was pretty sure what it was about though it still took me by surprise. "Oh please Basil.. Look I am sorry but the fact is my career didn't allow me to stay. Just as your field of work didn't allow you to leave Baker Street to come with me. Just wasn't the right time for either of us." Basil lit a match for I heard it through the door. "And what EXACTLY makes you think I care.." Relda cut him off by stomping her foot. "Ohhh don't you DARE pretend there is NOTHING between us. Or that you have feelings for me." Basil said nothing, not wanting to confirm anything and I think he couldn't deny it either. James managed to begin pulling me away. We had definitely heard too much of this conversation. We paused when we heard the door to the compartment open, turning we saw Relda standing in the corridor looking in at Basil but had not noticed us. She was furious, "You can't fool me Basil… I happen to know you kept my portrait and that it hangs above the fireplace in your flat.. Hopefully you will have more to say before we disembark tomorrow.." She turned and spotted us and I could see her cheeks turned pink under her fur. She straightened herself and walked with grace as she came towards us, "Sorry you had to see that gentlemen.. I trust that…" James came to her aid, "We can see you and Basil have some disagreement going on Mademoiselle but we shall not pry into the nature of your disagreement." She gave a warm and grateful smile, "Thank you.. I appreciate it. Good night Gentlemen." She bowed her head and we allowed her to pass. Once she was out of sight I whispered to him, "Well done sir, very good of you to save her further embarrassment." James nodded, "Yes.. Well, we did listen to more than we should have.. We owed it to her." I agreed with him and we returned to the compartment where Basil sat there smoking his pipe most furiously. He brightened up when he spotted us. "Ahh good, you fellows are back. Come, come, we have much to discuss for tomorrow!" He was in such high spirits we didn't bother mentioning what we overheard. If of course he didn't know already.. Basil tends to figure such things out but if he wanted to talk on another subject who was I to argue. James and I sat down and began to go over plans for tomorrow once we got off the train.

More to come soon. This is a test for this site since I have not used it before.
