"Violet it is almost the announcement time ." Someone is calling me from the pit
I sit above the chasm, my legs are dangling above the roaring water . My name is Violet but I don't know who my parent are . People said that they both dead when I was just a baby which is very normal because we are dauntless
Today is the initiation day, the day which we announce who will become the official members and who will get cut at the last stage .
"I will come very soon." I stretch myself
I stand up and walk toward the cafeteria . I born in a city called Detroit which is a city built after a Hundred Years' War . The purpose is to protect the survivors and their children.
Our ancestors have form the faction system to ensure the stability of the city: abnegation, erudite , dauntless, Candor and amity.
Every of the factions have their own purpose in this world: dauntless is responsible for protecting the citizens from the threat both within and without, abnegation provides us with selflessness leaders , erudite provides us technology and researchers, Candor provides us with sound leaders in law and amity provides us with caretaker and counsellors. Without any of them, we can't survive
I enter cafeteria a couple minute later , my friends are sitting together at one table . Most of my friends are from transfers and this year , surprisingly we have one transfer from abnegation.
"Hey Violet, you are here ." Kennedy waves at me
Kennedy is one of leader's daughter in abnegation but I don't know why she changed the faction . Abnegation values selflessness above anything else maybe she thinks that she is not selfless enough.
"Hey Kennedy , how are you doing today?" I smile at her
"I am good . The final exam really exhausted us ." Kennedy yawns .
"Yeah I get 2 fears but they are so horrible ." I roll my eyes
Maria and Jessica turn to me and their eyes are both wide
"Two? How is that possible . Anyway , Alexander seemed to be so embarrassed when watching your fear." Maria says
"Really? I don't know which one is it." I scratch the back of my neck
"You are lying. You always scratch the back of your neck when you are lying. It is your tell." Maria points at me
I don't know how sharp her eyes can be . I put my hand down on my laps
"Maybe it is because I am afraid of sex." I shrug
"Someone just did that with you in there? Do you know who is this?" Jessica frowns
"No idea, he is a faceless man." I say
I know that I can't tell them who is it otherwise , Alexander will be really embarrassed
"Oh really? Why is it so embarrassed for him though ." Elizabeth leans into me
"That is for abnegation not for dauntless . So it isn't really suppose to be in my fear ." I sigh
Now alexander walks on the stage and my grandma stands beside him.
"So congratulation for all of you finishing the initiation and welcome our new members of dauntless. This year all of you have the enough score to be the dauntless members." Alexander claps his hand
The screen lights up. I am ranked the first and Kennedy the second . I pat Kennedy on her shoulder . She was ranked last at the end of stage one but now she is just below me
"Good job ." I laugh . "See you can do it."
"Thank you. You are first ." Kennedy hugs me . "Congratulation Violet ."
"We are made it." Elizabeth whoops .
All my friends are ranked at top 5 so we can all stay in the compound. Joshua wraps his arm around my shoulder. He is adopted son for Alexander .
"You see that Violet is always the first one ." Joshua nudges Kennedy with his elbow
"Shut up, you are third only . You are even below her." I push him away. "Sit with your buddy for now ."
Alexander asks us to line up according to the rank so we can choose our job. I stand at the front. Alexander looks at me
"So what job do you want Violet ." He tries to act as calm as he can
"I want to work as an ambassador and instructor ." I smile at him
"So you will train the transfer with me . Your grandma will teach you how to be a good ambassador . Do you want to live alone or with your friends." Alexander pats my shoulder
I want to stay with my friends but I don't really think that we can live together without fighting
"I want to live alone ." I say
He gives me a key. I will stay above the glass building because ambassador is kind of government job .
"So you can go wait for your friends to finish." Alexander says
I walk back to the table . After a minute Kennedy comes back
"I am dauntless born instructor." Kennedy laughs . "I want to try as scary as mark."
Mark is my instructor but I don't know where he went
"Do you know what happen to him?" I raise my eyebrows
"No idea, Alexander said that he switch the job already." Kennedy shakes her head
I look around and don't see where mark is . I feel anxious . He was acting so weird recently but I don't know what happened to him. I stand up and wave good bye to Kennedy
"Where are you going?" Kennedy asks me
"I am going for a walk. I will come back soon." I say
I leave cafeteria . I want to find mark. I haven't see him since last week. I don't know where he can go. I walk to his apartment and knock three time on the door .
No one answers . My heart jumps so fast.
"He dead last week." Someone is standing behind me
I turn around . Johnson is there . He is one of lieutenant for Alexander beside Peter .
"Johnson what do you mean that he is dead?" I step back a little
"He jumped off the chasm. He doesn't want anyone to know it . He wrote me a letter that I can't tell anyone especially you. He wanted you to take his position instead Kennedy." Johnson leans against the wall. "I am sorry Violet. I should tell you but……"
Johnson and mark are best friends . I should trust him . Tears coming down from my face quickly. I don't believe that he will kill himself
"Why? Why is he doing this?" I shout
"He said that was for protecting you. He felt that something is coming toward divergent and he will be the one who get killed before they find out about you."
Johnson puts his hand on my shoulder . He is kind and gentle .
"I will do everything to protect you Violet . We have been friends for so many years too even longer than him." He leans into me
I tilt my head . He stops right there near my neck. I don't want anyone to fall in love with me .
"Thank you Johnson. I should go now ." I push him away and run as fast as possible away from the apartment.
I enter cafeteria when everyone start dancing. I sit down on the table
"What's wrong." Joshua and Edward come to meet me .
"Mark is dead ." I sob.
"What hell is that? Mark ? You mean our instructor is dead?" Edward's face is pale now
I nod at him. Joshua and Edward sit down beside me . Kennedy and my friends come too. They must have heard it.
"How is that possible?" Elizabeth covers her mouth to stifle a sob.
"He jumped off the chasm as Johnson told me . He doesn't want to tell anyone because he doesn't want to slow us down."I shiver. "I will find out the real reason."
The celebration is over . Grandma accompanies me back to my room
"Alexander asked you that can you please go to administer the aptitude test tomorrow?" Grandma smiles at me . "You did such a good job ."
"I can do it but grandma did you know that mark is dead?" I arch my eyebrow at her
"No I don't ." Grandma answers directly .
However I feel that grandma is somehow lying. She must know something about this! She must know it. I can't argue with her now
"I am sleepy grandma . I want to go to bed now ." I smile at her
We walk toward my apartment. I open the door and grandma opens the light.
"I prepare you some foods in the fridge . If you don't want to eat with us , you can cook yourself ." Grandma opens the fridge for me . "You see them right?"
"Yeah , right, thank you grandma . I love you so much ."I hug her
"Since your mom and dad passed away, I am only your family member now ." Grandma kisses my forehead
I look at her . My parent really are dead now . I feel sad
"What is my family name grandma ? Can you please tell me ?" I blink my eyes
"You really want to know?" Grandma says
"Yes I really want to know ." I say firmly.
I don't know how difficult is for her to tell me
"Your family name is prior ." Grandma grits his teeth
"That's good name ." I say
Grandma says good night and leaves . I sit on the bed . Today is a new day. I will become someone else tomorrow . I lay down on the bed . I close my eyes and fall into sleep
When I wake up, it is midnight. I can't sleep anymore so I decide to take a shower . I walk into bathroom and open the shower tub . I sit there for a long time .
I get into bath tub let the warm water runs against my skin. I close my eyes and relax . I get out after the water becomes cold and lay down again. I am so tired now and I want to sleep and never wake up.
I fall into sleep again and I don't knows when I will wake up. When I wake up, it is already the second morning. I will start the new job .
"Today is a new day." I laugh.
I am happy but when I think about mark, I am absolute quiet .
