We gather the hybrids together to explain the situation. "But that is treason!" The priest yells. I glare at him and summon my soul-stealing powers. The priest collapses as his soul flows from him to me. He wriggles and screams, but no one steps in to help. He falls still after several minutes.
Maybe this is where the saying, 'if looks could kill,' comes from. I turn back to the hybrids. "We will not be able to steal the king's soul, so we need other ideas."
"We should have him executed!" One of the hybrids yells. The others voice their agreement.
"Are you hearing this?" Tom asks into my phone. I hadn't realised he was still talking to Henry.
Other hybrids begin making battle plans while I step aside.
Mummy taps me on the shoulder. I turn, and she gasps. "What?" I ask.
"Your eyes..." She hands me her black phone screen. I turn it towards me and gasp when I'm met with blazing red eyes. "What now?"
I give Mummy her phone. "I won't make a habit of it."
"I know." Mummy gives me a weak smile. "But I cannot help but worry." She looks at Tom. "Doesn't Henry die later this year?"
I shrug and look around the room. "I cannot research that while Tom is on my phone."
"When have you started calling him Tom?" I sigh and tell Mummy when it started. "But..." Mummy's voice quivers, and tears pool into her eyes. She wipes them away. "I will join you on your quest."
I smile at her and pull her into a hug. "Thank you."
Tom walks over. "I do not mean to interrupt," he says as we pull away, "but Henry wants to know our plan."
I take my phone and put it on speaker. "What do you think we should do?" I ask Henry.
"I have over a hundred men willing to take up arms. I trust that the hybrids will join us?"
"They will," Mummy confirms. She looks at me and smiles. "I am also going to join."
"Great. Now, we need to get close to the King. Does anyone have any ideas?"
I think back to what King Henry said and glance at the ceiling. The wooden beams crossing the ceiling remind me of the Great Hall at Hampton Court, one of the places I will be flinging myself back into if I get the King's forgiveness. "I already told the King I will serve Queen Jane. While at Court, I can reacquaint myself with Cranmer and find the real Jane. However, I cannot do this alone."
"Mother will join you," Henry says, "she will be eager to help."
"I will be glad to have her assistance. Maggie and Rocky are also at Court, so they might already have some information."
Hope flows in my body. I want to go to Court and save Jane, but how can I do that? I must know what Luke was going to say. I look at Mummy. "Do you still have your phone? I need to call Luke."
"Now is not the time for you to get homesick."
"I need to know what he was going to say. I hung up on him without letting him finish."
Mummy pulls her phone out of her pocket and finds Luke's number. "At least we don't need to pay for data or calls. I dread to think what the bills would be like." She presses the green button.
"Mummy!" Luke cries. "You will tell me 'I told you so' after this."
"After what?"
"I walked in on Emma and William."
Everyone falls silent. "Who is William?" Tom asks.
"Who's that?"
"Thomas Boleyn, Anne's father," I say. "Luke, you said Jane was kidnapped in 1536. We need to know as much as possible before we rescue her."
We hear typing on the other side. "Jane told me where she was and who kidnapped her." Luke sounds nervous, almost uncertain.
"Where is she?" I ask.
Luke sighs. "In a tower room. When she went through the hall after her release, she identified it as Greenwich. It was decorated for Christmas."
My smile falls. We don't rescue Jane until Christmas? What do we do between now and then? "What about King Henry?" Tom asks. "Henry Fitzroy tells us that he lives to a hundred and has more than six wives."
"No, he still dies in January 154... no, wait, it is now 1542 rather than 1547."
"Are you sure?" I demand. Could I spare Katheryn from her execution?
"That's what Wikipedia says, but I'll check multiple sources." Luke groans. "No, 1547. Dome idiot changed his page."
This is why I do not trust that site! I checked Thomas Boleyn's Wikipedia page before accepting it as fact. "What about Thomas Boleyn?" I ask. "I think someone messed with his page and who knows how many others."
"Who else do you want me to research?"
"The rest of the queens, the Titanic officers..." I try to think of who else. "Anne Lister, Ann Walker. Oh, can you research White Star Line as well, please?"
I hear the scratch of a pen. "Right, I've got that. Which queens do you want to research?"
"Everyone from Jame Seymour, but only research Tudor England." I don't want to know about what we do on the Titanic.
"Right, Thomas Boleyn renews his vows to Elizabeth Howard after Henry VIII forced him to divorce her. He dies in March 1539." We hear more typing as Luke continues looking. "Jane dies in childbirth in 1537. Anna is still divorced in 1540. Katheryn marries Henry in 1540, and the marriage is annulled in 1541. She is devoured in February 1542." Katheryn's fate doesn't change, and that means I still kill her. "This is interesting."
"What is it?" I ask. What did Luke find?
"You kill Henry VIII in December 1546, but it is kept quiet until January."
What? How did this happen?
"Henry Fitzroy rules for a month, and he and the queens form the regency council. Mary and Elizabeth are also part of it. Catalina is declared the Lady Protector."
This is not something I was expecting. How will this change history? Will this influence Lady Mary?
"Luke!" A familiar voice yells. William.
"I need to go." Luke hangs up.
Now what? We have an army to overthrow Henry VIII, but we cannot overthrow him! Tom groans. "Then we cannot rise against the King."
"We might have a chance," Henry says, "for there is an uprising in the north. If we can get them on our side—"
"—we will have a chance to overthrow the king! I will go to Kent and see who will join us." Tom gives me my phone. "I will do all I can to end his reign of terror." He runs out of the room.
"I will head to Court soon," I add, "Lady Mary and several of our allies will be there. They'll happily help us."
That evening, I pack my belongings to return to Court. "Good luck," Mummy says.
"We will not need luck," I say, "but brains and determination."
"And numbers."
I shut my chest. "Of course."
I leave early in the morning with a couple of hybrids who will act as my maids. Matilda has a sunny disposition and smiles at every little thing, from a flower growing on the side of the road to the birds soaring in the sky. Her hair is as golden as the sun, and her green eyes sparkle like emeralds. She laughs as we ride along. "Emma?" She asks, her Scottish accent peeking through, "do you think we will make it in time to save Queen Jane?"
"We will," I promise, "Luke is from the future, and I trust him."
"Are you sure we can trust him?" Alice asks. She has curly black hair that she hides under a gable hood and expressive brown eyes. Her sepia, reddish-brown skin greatly contrasts with the light blue dress she wears.
"Luke is my brother, and I trusted him with my life many times."
