The team had been trying to investigate a car jacking crew for a couple of weeks now. The crew was smart; wore masks and gloves, planned exits and generally avoided streets with too much surveillance and people. It kept leaving Intelligence with little intel or new information; they were chasing their tails.

It's why they jumped to the scene of the latest one. Kevin and Torres were only a couple of blocks away when it went down so they were able to get there pretty quickly. Process the scene themselves rather than play catchup later.

"I hear we have a witness?" Hailey asked as she arrived on scene.

"Eh…Witness is a loose term. She saw it but it seems she's been drinking. Wouldn't call her drunk but as soon as we rolled up she got pretty belligerent. Started screaming and ranting about 'useless cops'. Then when one of the patrolmen went to ask for contact info or if she'd seen anything she shoved him and tried to walk away so we had to put her in cuffs. At that time she started blabbering that her son, Adam, is a cop and that we need to call him."

"What's her name?"

"Bridget Riordan, according to a credit card found in the holder on the back of her cell phone but no ID. There's a few Riordan's on the force but none have the first name Adam. She's definitely emotional. Hard to really get a read on her."

As Voight was catching up with a patrolman who was filling him in on the early happenings of the case he overheard Torres and Kevin updating Hailey.

"You said the last name was Riordan?"

"Uh, Yes, that was the name on the card. I have yet to verify. Waiting for the techs to text me confirmation" Kevin clarified

"Where is she?"

"The 2nd patrol vehicle ahead of mine. Officer's name is Thorn" As soon as Kevin got the words out Voight was on his way to the patrol officer standing beside his vehicle that held their unruly witness.

"Officer Thorn, she gets brought to the 21st. Park in the motorpool and Sergeant Platt will meet you.. Understood?"

"Yes Sir" the patrolman immediately went to the driver's side of his vehicle and left.

"Hailey, you and Torres finish up here. Kevin, you follow me back to the 21st."

"Anything you'd like to fill us in on Sarg?" Hailey questioned. How they went from not knowing what to do with this woman to her being escorted to one of their questioning rooms was not typical.

"When it's appropriate you will all know, Kevin I need you to call Platt and let her know she will need to meet Officer Thorn where she then will wait with her downstairs until she hears from me to bring her up. When you get to the 21st get upstairs and wait for me in the bullpen with Adam." Kevin knew better than to ask any further questions. Voight was taking charge of this case but still passing off responsibilities which meant something needed to be handled carefully.

As Voight drove back to the district he made two phone calls. One was to leave a voicemail for Kim who had been giving testimony in court all morning and the other was to Adam who was nearing the end of his light duty stint after rehabbing from being shot.

"What's up boss, need something? Warrant?"

"Adam, we caught another jacking. There was a witness that we are bringing in. She isn't being super cooperative and I didn't feel like this is something that needed to be public."

"Well that's super kind of you Sarg. You goin' all soft now?" Adam joked as he cut Voight off.

"Adam, the witness is your mother." He didn't mean to lay it out there so bluntly but there was no other way. Soon they'd make it back and Voight would walk Bridget upstairs with Platt and Adam would see her. How Adam wanted to let Kevin, let alone the rest of the team, into what was going on was another story. It was clear that the only other person who would've recognized Adam's mother was Kim and it was still likely at least an hour before she came back to the 21st. Voight just hoped that he orchestrated a safe environment for Adam to make sense of everything. Aside from Kim, Kevin was the next person Adam confided in the most. Trudy Platt also had a soft spot for him; sure he often used it to his own advantage but he also tended to seek her out for advice and Voight knew that if Adam's emotions started bubbling over Platt would be able to talk him down in Kim's absence.

Adam went silent. Processing what Voight was telling him. "Well that can't be good huh?"

"Adam, she's just a witness."

"Right; for now."

"We have no reason to believe anything else. She was just getting a little belligerent. She pushed one of the patrolmen trying to get information from her. Started throwing it around that her son was a cop. I felt it best to get her out of there and since it was our case we could finish the interview here when she sobers up and is more calm"

"Sobers up? Boss, it's like noon?" Adam had his phone up to his ear while he held his head in his free hand. He could feel a headache coming on. He had spent the last 3 years trying to clean up and make sure there were no more surprises left by his father's poor decisions. And now his mother drops back into his life. When was the last time he even heard from her? Back when he was engaged?

"We'll figure out everything later on. I'm meeting Platt and then we're bringing her up; probably within the next 20 or so minutes. Kevin should be there soon. He doesn't know anything; it's your family, you get to say as much or as little as you want. If you need to get some air you and him go grab lunch"

"Thanks but I think I'll stay"

"Adam, she's going to be walked right past you. Right now she is being held on the charge of assaulting a police officer. We won't actually use it but since she wasn't very cooperative we had to cuff her and we are using it to hopefully get her to talk."

"I know, I'll just keep my head down. I have plenty of experience with her yelling and ignoring it."

Voight was a bit alarmed with the chuckle he added at the end. He had met Bridget when she and Bob were still married. He knew her uncle Thomas from some of his early years on the job. Tommy Riordan was a stark contrast to Disco Bob. Both spent their careers working in patrol but Thomas put in a lot of extra time. He was a regular at the academy, assisting with classes and training. He was loyal and dedicated; traits that Voight saw in Adam. By the night of the infamous retirement party Bob and Bridget had already divorced and it was a few years later that Voight remembered hearing about the 26th being cleared out after someone called in a bomb threat that he now knew via Adam was Bridget. However; that's all Voight knew of Adam's mother. He hardly spoke of her. To be honest he hardly spoke of any of his family. Anyone who ever worked a day in intelligence knew that Adam had long considered the team to be his family. While that was still the case he also had been building his own with Kim and Makayla. Also true over the years; he was fiercely protective of both.
