Thanksgiving Preparations Part 1

On the Wednesday before Thanksgiving, 12-year-old Elizabeth Michaluk-Jenkins came home from school to find her father, 36-year-old Jamal Jenkins in the kitchen basting the turkey for dinner the following evening.

"Hi, Dad, still preparing for tomorrow night?" Elizabeth asked.

"Yes I am, Grandma and Grandpa Jenkins are bringing the pies, and Auntie Danitra is bringing her famous sweet potato casserole for tomorrow night's meal." Jamal said to Elizabeth.

"Is Mom still at work?" Elizabeth asked Jamal.

"Yes, she is, you know how busy the real estate business can be for your mother." Jamal said to Elizabeth.

Missis Jasmine Michaluk was a busy real estate agent who was always on the go, she only was off during holidays like Thanksgiving, Christmas, and New Year's.

Elizabeth checked the fridge, "Oh my gosh!" she exclaimed.

"What is it?" Jamal asked Elizabeth.

"We're out of butter for the garlic cressants!" Elizabeth answered her father.

"Will you run down to the bodega and pick up some more?" Jamal asked his daughter.

Elizabeth was putting her coat, hat, scarf, and gloves back on, "I'm on my way, Dad!" she exclaimed.

While on her way to the bodega, Elizabeth came across some writing in the sky.

Ghostwriter: Don't be afraid, I'm on your side, Elizabeth.

Elizabeth decided to tell her father about the mysterious writing as soon as she returned home.

When she reached the bodega, Elizabeth found her Hurston Middle schoolmates, 12-year-old Jade and 11-year-old Andrew.

Jade, like Elizabeth, was in seventh grade while Andrew started sixth grade the past September.

Andrew was at the register, while Jade had her nose buried in a detective novel written by her aunt, Gabriella Baker.

"What can I do for you, Beth?" Andrew asked.

"A box of butter if you would please, Andy." Elizabeth said.

After paying for the butter, Elizabeth went straight home.

After arriving home, Elizabeth noticed that her mother was home from work.

"Hello, Sweetheart," Jasmine greeted Elizabeth. "how was school?"
