"How can you do it?"

Arizona Robbins looked up from the files she was reviewing in one of the attending lounges to see Lexie Grey standing in the doorway.

"H-how can you be in when they..." Lexie trained off as she tried to gather her thoughts. She really did spend a silly amount of time trying to figure out how to talk to Arizona and all that prep went out of the window when she found her.

"How can I be with Calliope when she's pregnant with Mark's mighty oak or whatever they're calling it?" Arizona filled in the gaps.

"Right," Lexie said with a nod. "How?"

Arizona moved some paperwork from the couch to the coffee table in front of her to give Lexie a place to sit down. Wordlessly Lexie took the cue and moved from the doorway, pulling the door so it softly clicked behind her.

"How?" Lexie asked again in a whisper.

Arizona gave a slightly tight smile. "I wanted a life with Calliope, I wanted a future where she and I figured out how to start a family together once we were ready. But that didn't happen. And when I found out I had a choice to make," she said before looking down at her own hands for a moment and then back up. "I could be in and have a life with her even if it wasn't the plan we made or I could be out and watch her raise a baby and one day find someone else to be her partner."

"How did you know what to do?" Lexie questioned.

Arizona let out a slow breath. "At first I didn't,' she admitted. "At first I just wanted to kick Mark very hard in a very sensitive part of his anatomy. But once I calmed down and remembered the reasons we are where we are and I took stock I realized a simple fact. There is no version of the future where I am not in love with Calliope Torres. I rather be with her and get to build a life, different maybe than our plan, but wonderful too than watch from the sideline as she builds a life without me."

"He's done this to me twice," Lexie said with a humorless laugh. "First with Sloane and her baby and now with this. He wants to be a father so much. I'm scared if I can't be as in as you are that he won't accept it."

"The only person who can know if you want to be in at all, much less a parent, is you," Arizona pointed out. "And the only person who can ask you to be in, in any capacity, is him."

"Do you think we can work after all the times we tried and failed?" Lexie asked an unknowable question.

"I have a vested interest in two people who have tried and failed in the past being able to make it if they try again," Arizona said with a half smile. "But yes, I do think if you and he have a serious conversation there is a chance."

"Would Callie..." Lexie trailed off. "I don't think she likes me very much."

"She likes you, Lexie. You're her best friend's on again, off again girlfriend. Callie's mood about you changes as Mark's does. That's how they work. As frustrating as it is," Arizona said.

Lexie rubbed the back of her neck as she thought. "I love him," she whispered. "For all the fighting we've done and all the crap we've pulled against each other. I love him. I want a life with him even if he keeps trying to push us toward it faster than I want."

"For what it's worth, I know him well enough to know he loves you. He hasn't had a great track record with women and from the limited information I have on his past it sounds like it never had a great pair of role models around to show him how to be in a relationship," Arizona said.

"No," Lexie said with a shake of her head. "He didn't." She checked her watch before getting to her feet. "I should go try to catch him before he's off. Thanks for this, Dr. Robbins."

"Arizona," she said. "I think at this point you can call me Arizona."

"Right," Lexie said. "Arizona."

Arizona watched as Lexie walked out before turning back to her files. She only felt a little guilty that she partly hoped Mark and Lexie getting back together would settle down some of his chest beating tendencies. If only for her own sanity.

"Hey," Callie said as she came to the door. "The baby really wants pizza. I know that you are watching everything that goes into my body now but can we put a pin in that and get pizza, please?"

Arizona flashed a dimpled simple. "Veggie lovers?"

"Pepperoni and a side salad?" Callie tried.

"Sold," Arizona said as she gathered her files. When she crossed the lounge to get to Callie, she pressed a soft kiss to her lips. "Let's go home. We can order pizza, put on something comfortable and watch an old movie."

"Sounds perfect to me," Callie said with a warm smile.
