AN: Welcome back everyone. Here's Chapter 3. Thank you to all who reviewed and for all the Kudos. You guys are awesome!
Marcela R and Guest- Thank you guys. I have so much in store for this story. Lots of character and plot development. Be assured that the wait for the chapters will be worth it.
I also have this story on A03 under my username DefyingLogicAndEmotion28.
I do not own Inuyasha. :).
"How are your courses coming along? If your grades struggle unfortunately you or your brother won't be allowed to finish the initiation phase for the frat." Miroku informed Inuyasha as they walked the halls of Sango's dorm apartment. Sesshomaru trailed behind. Miroku looked back at the older brother. "It's kinda one of those 'requirements'".
Sesshomaru scoffed.
"I'm fine. All I need tonight is my laptop to study. Ya' don't ever have to worry about him. I doubt you'd ever see an A- on his semester reports." Inuyasha admitted.
"That I can believe." Miroku smirked. "So what do you think of Kagome. She can be rather boisterous but she's considered one of the most attractive woman here at Scottman."
"I'm beginning to think you feel that way about every women here." Sesshomaru professed.
Inuyasha's upper cheeks crimsoned. "She's...beautiful for sure. But I ani't lookin' for a setup from ya', okay!"
"Fine. Fine. The more valuable you are to all the other pretty ladies here, the more will feel welcomed to come to our parties and events." Miroku smirked wily.
Sesshomaru looked on pensive in thought.
"And what of you older brother?" Miroku grinned even the more.
"Don't!" Sesshomaru asserted.
"Don't even try to play matchmaker with him. It would never happen. He's denied every opportunity for the pleasures of a woman. I doubt he even knows anything about that." Inuyasha laughed and immediately stiffened upon hearing Sesshomaru's growl. "Nnn-nevermind it."
Sesshomaru's phone echoed in the hallway. "It's Father. I'll meet with you all in a second." Sesshomaru stated with a knowing glare towards his younger brother.
"There was another incident near Victory Boulevard. We managed to reach the victim before she lost consciousness. Unfortunately she was not able to recall any details of her encounter or whoever it was at attacked her." Toga informed. Sesshomaru stiffened. These calls were occurring more frequently and since moving to America they had not been able to find a culprit for the recent attacks that began several months before their arrival. Before moving, Toga received a call from a long time friend who was the leader of a bear demon clan that too shared in the powers of the kunjen that was given to them some decades back once more research was completed on the stones.
The bear demon named David was the father and husband of a family similar to Toga's and lived in America for hundreds of years. They became allies during a visit to Japan once Toga learned of their shared purpose of creating a world of peace in efforts to sustain their bloodlines from the threats of those who had wished to eradicate all demons during and towards the end of the Feudal era. Jiro was the last major threat against them presently but the irrevocable damage caused by those alike to him and even other demon clans was far to great. David in return, decades back, informed Toga of a private science team in California full of demons that were able to conceal who they really were to the public eye and a deal was made on the sharing of new found knowledge in technological advancements. Steps were fortunately made to destroy any rising demon or megalomaniac humans who ever attempted to harm innocent lives, themselves, or any allies. They were successful but careful. Yet, a war felt as if it would erupt at the borders of their sanities. The energy charging at them clouded out any reason to deny such a threat. It was palpable enough for everyone involved.
David and Toga also joined with law enforcement agencies of that area to aid in solving these bizarre crimes that had criminal investigators and detectives lost and fighting an endless battle they grew to believe they were incapable of solving.
"She could not recall anything at all you say?" Sesshomaru asked. He couldn't understand how each of the victims that were fortunate to survive these attacks apparently lost their memories of the events. It did not make any sense to him. He was sure this was the cause of some high ranking demon with powers they have yet to combat against. Whoever was behind this, have they been capable of inducing amnesia on their victim? If so what other knowledge did they hold? And what was the purpose of striking down innocent humans?
"It is an unfortunate dilemma we are facing son. We were able to call paramedics in time to treat her wounds and she was taken to a nearby hospital. She was attacked with... claw-like marks on her back."
"A demon."
"Afraid so. What other being could have done such a thing. This is really becoming a problem that we need to get a lead on. Any leads. Sesshomaru, tell your brother that you both must remain on guard. Inform me of anything suspicious." Toga asserted. "It is good then that you both are attending that school. Perhaps someone there has some information they could share, even if its all just hearsay."
"Hn." Was all the reply Sesshomaru gave his father but Toga knew that he understood and was relieved to know that his sons were apart of destroying anyone or anything that thrived off of hate or malice for unjust reasons. Especially if it would reveal the possibility of the existence of demons in this present time. The days had long past for demons to rule over the humans but unfortunately there are some who would test the flames.
Sesshomaru abruptly ended the call with his father and proceeded towards the door where Inuyasha and Miroku entered. He paused. Hearing the conversations from the group reminded him of the fact that he was reaching territory that he never cared for. Companionships. His reticent nature always got the best of him. It was his domain to be aloof and reserved. He lived to steer clear of idle or frivolous conversations and dare say... relationships. What was he even doing here. He could study in his major of Economics all on his own. He didn't need people around for that and he couldn't see the purpose of this... arrangement of Mirokus. Why did he even come?
Before knocking Sesshomaru stepped back to simply leave to go about his own affairs. But then he heard her voice. That girl. The one back at the Bistro. As soon as he walked in he saw her. She was quiet and buried in a small school book. Her face was angelic and gentle but distinctive enough to draw him in and study her for a bit. She was beautiful. More then that she was captivating. But appearance alone meant nothing to him. He had encountered many pulchritudinous women all throughout his existence but they failed to keep him intrigued. She however held him in place for a moment just... sitting there. So much of him wanted to look away but so much more of him needed to understand who exactly she was and why he felt... drawn to her so suddenly.
'Rin.' he remembered. Who was she? This little human girl, no... woman. She was a woman of these modern times. Was she as sweet as she looked? Would she run away if she knew who he really was? Would she accept him for it? He knew she was attracted to him by the sounding of her racing heart when she met his gaze. The way she blinked to clear her view in disbelief of what she was seeing before her. The way she sharply inhaled when he approached their table. It was obvious. He could take her body and soul. It would be effortless. He may be foreign to the ways of a woman's heart but he was the ideal candidate that any woman would beg for. He knew it. But he could not ever bring himself to squander precious time for such reckless pleasantries. If he ever gave himself to any women what exactly could he gain from it in return? His father spoke of the wonders of a woman but never in his life did he see the need for matters of the heart to evade his convoluted mind and especially his... heart.
Curiosity won his mental battle today. At least for now.
"Am I at the proper location?" Sesshomaru asked while partly opening the door to Sango's dorm apartment.
"We're in here Sesshomaru. You can come right in!" Sango exclaimed.
He gazed around the room and his eyes landed on the beautiful girl who again held her face planted in another textbook. Sesshomaru inwardly smirked.
Inuyasha looked to his older brother for any confirmation of his previous phone call. With a nod from Sesshomaru and a look of 'We'll speak of this later' was all he needed to see then.
Sesshomaru took a seat behind Rin where a couch was present. He could feel her immediately tense at his near proximity. He smirked inwardly again.
"Sesshomaru. How are you liking Scottman so far?" Kagome glanced up at the older brother then towards Rin who pulled her bottom lip up in a scowl.
"I really shouldn't be telling you all this yet but, Sesshomaru will be leading Etas first on-campus event after their initiation." Miroku announced.
"How amazing is that Sesshomaru. You must be looking for favor on campus then? Students love to see a new face in charge." Sango inquired.
"I was asked to." Sesshomaru corrected.
Miroku scoffed. "I mean look at him. Everyone will be present for that event. It will be packed full of all the ladies on campus. Especially being that it's a class teaching on self defense."
WHACK!
"Hey come on Sango. You know I can't help it." Miroku pleaded and quickly nursed a rising lump at the top of his head from Sango's right hook. "But seriously, most of these women need a bit of advice on the subject. I'm not the only man that struggles to keep his hands to himself."
Sesshomaru scoffed.
"Kagome. What ya' working on here?" Inuyasha asked diverting his attention to the beauty before him. "It looks a bit complicated."
"Oh, just a little on heart medications. Rin and I are in the same courses. Our instructors have been drilling these in on us like crazy lately." Kagome stated pointing at a list of medications with names so foreign they may as well be a different language from that of her own.
"Maybe I can help." Inuyasha offered.
Sesshomaru scoffed again. "As if you could assist in such a subject, little brother." Rin for the first time that evening turned her head from her textbook and gazed behind her at Sesshomaru.
He met her gaze and smirked. 'She's more beautiful up close.' He thought. She gave him a faint smile and quickly looked away.
"Feh. And what do you know of it anyway." Inuyasha retorted. He was annoyed that his brother couldn't obviously see that he was simply making conversation. He was nervous for some reason around Kagome and he did not want to seem like a complete dud to her. She was so breathtaking and it almost made him stutter.
"May I?" Sesshomaru asked reaching his hand out to Rin's book. He was suave unlike his brother. No women could ever make him feel nervous. He knew what his brother was up too and the purpose of their presence here. He would handle this like the charmer he was.
Rin hesitated for second and Kagome stiffened at his sudden request. Sango inwardly giggled and Miroku smirked. Rin placed her textbook in his hand with a shy smile. He looked it over as everyone in the room waited patiently. He could easily hear Rin's steadily rising heartbeat. She was blushing profusely. "Ttt...there's much more to it all than the heart drugs. We are struggling to piece it all together." Rin stuttered trying desperately to calm her growing nerves. He was so close. She could make out his long soft eyelashes intricately layered over his eyes. His short silver bangs draped over his forehead and hung perfectly in place. He had his hair down like the last time she saw him. She wondered why he or his brother wore it so long down their backs like that but looking at him she could not see it worn better on anyone else. And due to their proximity she could tell he was well groomed. He wore a long-sleeve black button down shirt that was loosely fitted with all black pants that fit his height perfectly. 'God, he's tall.' she thought. And he smelled so good. So fresh and sensual with a hint of a warm rich spice. She was nearly drooling.
"You are approaching this erroneously. Cease with studying this as if it were an exam but how it would affect the patient's body and the outcomes thereafter. I wager it would make more sense to you then." Sesshomaru informed impassively.
"Oh wait. That makes sense Rin!" Kagome exclaimed.
"Pharmacodynamics." Kagome and Rin stated simultaneously. Kagome face palmed.
"That was lesson one." Rin reminded Kagome.
"It was. We've been approaching this all wrong."
Sesshomaru smirked and Inuyasha huffed crossing his arms over his chest. "Yeah, yeah."
"Thank you, Sesshomaru." Rin voiced fighting her fears to look him directly in the eyes again. "What are you studying tonight if you don't mind me asking?"
"My work has already been completed." He answered impassively looking toward a painting plastered on a wall across from his view. He then slowly shifted his gaze at her. "But... you are welcome, Rin." He liked the sound of her name rolling off his lips. It felt right. He did not fail to notice her slight tremble at his words either and how her eyes glazed over before looking down towards the floor. And how the corners of her lips bended in an upward motion. That smile was captivating too. His eyes fixated on her soft lips. They were in a perfect proportion to the rest of her face as well as her little button nose and obvious human ears. She was indeed human and he was sure then that she would fall for him immeasurably without fail. But he was not human. And never in his life did he ever imagine feeling any attraction to a human woman. He was sure he was not like his father because what did his father even see in them. He was perfection itself. Even in his name. He was Destruction of Life. She would hate what his hands could do. What they had already done for centuries. She was life and he knew he could destroy her fantasy of a simple ordinary life she could have with someone who did not share the perilous pattern his life would continue to lead.
Everyone else proceeded to converse in their own side conversations for some time so Rin took the opportunity to shamelessly question the very handsome young man who peaked her curiosity even more since his little display earlier. He spoke with the vernacular of a gentleman far before her time. It was impressive and very attractive. "So Sesshomaru. How do you like Scottman? Do you or your brother live near campus?"
Sesshomaru who was currently scrolling his phone for any possible leads since his prior conversation with his father Toga gingerly looked up from his phone at the girl who patiently waited for his answer. She was smiling again and he couldn't resist engaging her curiosity of him. He was curious of her too. "I find it... likable." He shrugged. "Between the two of us I'd prefer a more secluded location for my academic endeavors. I blame my father's constant pestering for my need to socialize. But I digress."
"It sounds like he wants the best for you. He must be a really good father then." She surmised.
Sesshomaru smiled suppressing a laugh. As much as he hated to admit it his father did mean him well even if he disagreed with most of his, to him, annoying antics. His father was more charismatic with his interpersonal communication with others whereas Sesshomaru simply needed to stare and flex his aura and an entire room would be submitted to his attention. He was powerful in his own way and did not need to do very much to command attention. Back in the Feudal era he lead armies of demons and struck fear in the hearts of thousands with his presence alone. He did not need to be sociable whatsoever. But today was a different time and parts of him yearned to explore more of what his father incessantly preached about. "He is a good man. And no, we do not live near here. We live with our father some miles from here near Lombard street."
"Ah, I see. Kagome and I live in the other dorm apartments adjacent to campus. We use to live on campus during freshmen and sophomore year but that got tiring really quickly. I hated sharing my bathroom with nearly the entire freshmen class." Rin chuckled. "Anyways, we're almost done with nursing school thankfully. I'm hoping to precept at the hospital with Kagome in San Francisco. William Memorial Hospital. It's a teaching hospital loaded with nursing and medical students." She took the deepest breath amazed that she shared all that with him. 'Did he really need to know all that? Did he even care to know it?'
"William Memorial you say? I'm familiar. I believe that is a wise choice. I see that you are ambitious. What drove you to the interest of nursing?"
"Well... around the time I was 13 my Dad had fallen ill with a rare kind of blood cancer. Knowing how men can often be reluctant in going to the doctor when they are sick, he ignored his symptoms for so long that by the time my Mom and I knew that something was really wrong with him, he was at stage 4 of the cancer. One day I found my Dad unconscious in his bedroom as pale as a ghost." Rin's expression became somber then and Sesshomaru stared at her giving her his full attention. Her eyes were fixated on her knees beneath her. "I couldn't wake him. I didn't know what to do. I felt so helpless. My Mom rushed in the room after hearing me scream and she immediately called 911. He needed 8 units of blood that day. Ever since then it was nothing but hospital visits. My Dad was never able to enjoy his home with his family again. Since then I swore to myself that I would learn everything about taking care of someone and the symptoms that could come with all kinds of illnesses." He asked her such a question but was not prepared for what she explained then. He knew of humans being shallow and meretricious. Holding no real value in their short pathetic lives. Looking to take and only gain for themselves. But she was benevolent and altruistic. Certainly she had chosen the right profession. Certainly she was worthy of it. He felt a small piece of himself longing to rid her of her melancholic state. She then gave him the widest toothy smile. "But no worries. I am here now and I promised my Dad I would be a nurse one day and help someone else's daughter to keep her loved one in their lives if I can help it."
He stiffened and gazed at her pensively reflecting the slightest bit of emotion. It did not go unnoticed by Inuyasha who was silently eavesdropping. "Rin, I... that is very honorable. I'm sure you will do just that." He couldn't believe himself. Sesshomaru, lost for words? She was honorable and his perception of her outward appearance meshed perfectly with her temperament. She was even more beautiful and remarkably so. How she was not already another's lover astonished him.
Rin's cheeks flushed a light pink hue. "Thank you, again. Sesshomaru. But, I don't want to bore you with my melodramas. I'm sure any girl here has a sob story to share with you for your sympathy." She stated waving her right hand in the air then immediately gasped from her admission. "I'm sorr-."
"No." Sesshomaru boomed. "I desire to hear more of you." He was bewildered to hear his own admission but he knew he meant every word.
Rin's cheeks flushed scarlet. She felt her face warm with heat and was in desperate need of a distraction.
*Beep. Beep. Beep.*
Rin looked at her alarming watch ringing from her wrist. She exhaled and lightly giggled. "Well it looks like its time for me to start packing up. Kagome and I have a pretty tight schedule." She looked over to Kagome who found her way a bit closer to Inuyasha than she was before. "Kagome, looks like it's time for us to go."
"Inuyasha, I'll have to take you up on your mother's cinnamon muffin recipe next time." Kagome giggled.
"Right. Next time for sure." Inuyasha stated with a nod and cheeky grin.
"If your schedule allows. Perhaps we may meet for lunch this week?" Sesshomaru asked drawing Rin's attention back at the now standing stoic beauty before her.
Kagome rushed over to Rin draping her hands on Rin's shoulders. "She would LOVE to."
Rin quickly darted her eyes at Kagome then back toward Sesshomaru. "I would."
Sesshomaru smirked. He had to know more about her and he knew she deeply felt the same.
"Well then Kagome, Rin. I will see you both at Duke's tomorrow morning with Sheensa. Miroku don't forget to stay out of trouble. And Inuyasha and Sesshomaru, I'll see you both on campus sometime, okay." Sango stated smilingly gazing at her friends. Everything had went well and she was pleased to see that the new brothers were a pleasant company to have around and she knew her group of friends felt more ...complete.
AN: Hope you all liked this chapter. I love the fluffiness. It warms my little heart.
How Sesshomaru has lived for so long without a good woman in his life reminds me of his life before Rin. In this fic he clearly lived through that for much much longer which I think he would have done if he never met her in the feudal era. Over time for this fic, because his Father lived, he was able to learn more of compassion and how to balance it whilst gaining his own strength as well as Inuyasha. He's not so cold-hearted and has seen the world over the centuries. He will always need Rin though just in this timeline he receives her in a different way.
