Chapter 9: Unexpected Moments

Mid Nov. 2000

22 months later

When Grissom woke up that morning, he sees Sara laying on her side with her head in her hand and a bright smile on her face, so he smiled in return.

"Good morning, honey."

"Morning, babe."

She then cupped his clean-shaven cheek as she asked with a smirk. "So, does it still feel good to be waking up next to your boss? Well, I guess it's sort of boss, I'm only the assistant supervisor."

Just a few days ago Sara got a promotion to become assistant supervisor.

He sighed in content as he took her hand from his cheek. "Just as amazing as waking up to you every morning before your promotion. It's been almost two years since we've been waking up together on a daily basis and it still doesn't feel old."

As he kissed her knuckles, she shook her head with a smile. "No, it doesn't, and I hope it never does."

He shook his head this time before he kissed her knuckles again. "I don't think it will."

This time she sighed in content as she looked at the man she fell in love with when she just turned 21 and is still deep in love with, in fact her love for him has only gotten stronger, especially since he moved here. "I think you're right." He smiled and they just look at one another lovingly.

After a moment or two had passed by, Sara sighed again as she moved her head so she could lay it on his chest. "So, Dr. Grissom, can you finally tell me why you didn't accept the promotion? I'm sure it was offered to you first."

When the previous assistant supervisor was leaving, and the lab was looking for a replacement, everyone was sure Grissom would get it, even though he hadn't been in that lab very long. But he was the most seasoned CSI the lab had, so it was a little surprising, at least to most, that it had been Sara that got the promotion and not him. Not that she didn't deserve it of course, she worked hard for that lab, harder than most really.

Grissom took a breath as he ran his hand up and down her shirt clad back. "I was, but I turned it down for multiple reasons. One, I felt that if I became your boss in any way, it might become harder for you to move up the ranks, at least without people talking or questioning why it happened. Two, you know how I feel about the extra paperwork, and I felt like I already dealt with it enough in Vegas. Three, I also wouldn't have felt right if I would have gotten it because I hadn't been there as long you and some of the others. And four there could be more opportunities for me to guest teach, so if that happens, I wouldn't have to turn them down because I have more responsibilities." He kissed the top of her head and whispered. "I'm so proud of you honey, you deserve that promotion, don't question it."

She cleared her throat as she asked while moving her eyes up to his. "You really thought of that, you being my boss might hinder me?"

He nodded with a smile as he cupped her cheek. "Sara, you are one of the best CSI's I have ever worked with, and whatever promotions you end up getting by the end of your career, I wouldn't be surprised at all. But if I had become your boss, then I would always have that fear that people might think you didn't earn your promotions, that you got them because your..."

She cuts him off with a smile as she moved up so her lips were aligned with his. "Sleeping with the boss?"

He nodded with a sigh. "Well, yes."

"But the people who know me, and know how I work, won't think that."

"That's true, but you'll always have those gossipers and I rather not have us deal with that extra chatter, so if I'm not your boss, they can chat about something else."

She then chuckled. "Like, you sleeping with the boss?"

He chuckled in return as he cupped her cheek. "I guess that would be true because they can't seem to stop talking about us. But I'm not looking for any promotions, I'm not even thinking about ever getting promoted. I like where I am professionally, and personally for that matter."

Her eyes looked at him lovingly. "I like where I am too. I love you, Griss."

"I love you too."

They lean towards one another and started kissing, which eventually turned passionate, then after several loving minutes, he pulls back and she opens her eyes, both seeing they did want to continue, so he whispered 'wait a minute' as he moved so he could get to his nightstand, but she stopped him with her next words.

"You don't have to."

He turned back towards her and asked with little surprise in his tone. "You sure?"

While they discussed having more kids, and even customized their own house to have room for more kids, they didn't want to rush having them right after they moved in with one another, so they took all the precautions that they could, until this moment.

She nodded with a smile. "Yes." She then cupped his cheek. "I want another baby with you. If of course you haven't chan..."

He cuts her off reassuringly. "Of course not honey, I was just waiting for your go ahead."

She smiled wider. "Well, you have the go ahead."

He smiled in return while moving so he was completely above her again.

They look deep into each other's eyes, showing their true desire about wanting to try for another child, then she nodded with one more smile before he moved down and started kissing her, both letting the world slip in the background for a bit.

A few hours later

Once they finally got out of bed, Sara took the shower first while Grissom went downstairs to their spacious kitchen and started preparing for their morning routine, like make the coffee and prepping for their breakfast since he always made sure they had a good breakfast every morning.

When she got out of the shower, he used it while Sara took a cup of coffee out on the deck, stood at the railing and listened to the ocean while enjoying her morning coffee and a moment to herself before she officially started her day.

About 20 minutes later, Sara feels Grissom's arms wrap around her waist and she sighs in his embrace while closing her eyes, then he kisses her cheek and asked softly. "Are you having second thoughts about..."

She cuts him off immediately as she opened her eyes back up. "No, I was just thinking when I'll wake up from this dream. We have a beautiful home that we designed ourselves, a beautiful daughter, I have the most wonderful, loving man in the world, and I have a job I love. This almost feels too good to be true."

He kissed her cheek again and replied. "Honey, this isn't a dream." He sighed this time. "But honestly, I've had this same feeling that one day I'm going to wake up and all of this will be gone, and I'll be alone in my townhouse in Vegas."

She moved her hand to his arm to hold on to him as she sighed again, starting a conversation that's been on her mind. "I almost feel a little greedy to be asking if you ever thought us having more?"

He raised an eyebrow in confusion. "More?"

She nodded as she turned into his arms. "Yes, as in saying 'I Do'."

She knows they are committed to one another, regardless of if they ever get married or not, but surprisingly marriage has been on her brain the last few months.

Now Grissom looked a little shocked at first then worried he missed a sign that being married is what she wanted for a long time. "Marriage, is that what you want? I mean we never talked about it, which considering how the first six years of our relationship was, that's understandable, and I thought that..."

Sara cuts him off with a smile as she cupped his cheek. "Babe, you've done nothing wrong, you're right, there were a few very good reasons why marriage has never come up in our conversations, and honestly, it's just now recently came to me that maybe the idea of it is isn't so bad anymore."

Grissom smiled as he asked while moving his hand up to cup her cheek. "So, you're putting the idea out on the table."

She nodded with a smile of her own, then replied with love. "I mean I know we are committed to one another through thick and thin, no matter if we ever have rings on our fingers."

He cuts her off with a determined/loving look. "We are honey, nothing and no one is ever going to change that."

Seeing that fiery look in his eyes sent a pleasant shiver down her spine as she tried to finish. "But maybe..."

But then she gets cut off when the back door opened, and their now eight-year-old daughter spoke from the open doorway. "Morning mom, dad."

Both of their attention went to their light and joy before Grissom spoke with a smile. "Morning butterfly, you ready for breakfast?"

The Sara copy nodded with a smile, showing her gap teeth. "Yes, please. I hope I wasn't interrupting anything."

Sara is the one that spoke. "It's ok, we can talk about this another time."

After Sara looked at Grissom, he nodded with a smile, then they share a kiss before she pulls back and walks into the house with Grissom following, now getting some ideas in his head after that surprising conversation.

The Grissom family had just finished up their breakfast and Belle was in her room finishing getting ready for school when Grissom's cell phone rings, causing Sara to smirk while thinking it was work. "Now why are they calling you, they should know that I am the second call."

Grissom had a smile on his face at first until he saw that it was Nick from Vegas who was calling, so that got him curious while he answered it. "Nick, this is unexpected, what's..."

When Nick cuts him off, Grissom now became worried. "It's Catherine, she was in a car accident."

Now on top of being worried he became super alert. "Is she ok?"

While Nick tried to stop it, Grissom could hear the worry in his voice. "It's pretty bad man, they don't know if she'll wake up."

Grissom stood up from his seat instantly, causing Sara to become even more concerned/worried about what was going on.

He cleared his throat before speaking. "Ok, I'll see what I can do, and I'll be there as soon as I can. "

"I'll see you when you get here then."

"Alright, bye."

"Bye, man."

Once they hung up, Grissom took a deep breath, and Sara gets up asking with worry. "What is it, Griss?"

He took another moment before looking at Sara. "That was Nick, Catherine I guess was in a car accident, and it sounds pretty serious."

While she didn't know his ex-team in Vegas, she knew he was pretty close to them, or at least as close as Grissom let them be, especially towards Catherine, they had been pretty good friends since she started in the lab.

"Then you have to go. I'll let Peter know you need the time off for an emergency."

"Yeah? I mean at this moment I don't know how long I'll be gone."

She nodded with a smile as she cupped his cheek. "It's ok, we'll be fine. Just go do what you have to, and we'll see you when you get back."

He was saddened to be leaving them, but Catherine was his friend and he wanted to be there for her.

"Ok. I love you."

They kiss softly before she pulls back and whispers. "I love you too. I have to drop Belle off at school, do you want me to come back to take you to the airport?"

"No, it's ok, I'll call a cab."

After she nodded, they share another kiss, then as they were pulling back, Belle came back into the room and Sara spoke to their daughter. "Alright kiddo, it's just me taking you to school today, you ready?"

She nodded but frowned as she looked at her father. "Daddy's not coming? But we always go together."

Since Grissom officially moved here, the ride to school was always the three of them, so this would be a first without him in a while.

Grissom shook his head as he walked towards her, then kneeled down before talking sincerely. "A friend of mine in Vegas got into a really bad car accident, so I need to go there and give her all the support I can."

While Belle was still sad her father couldn't go with them and had to leave, she understood, so she nodded as she gave her father a hug. "Ok daddy. I love you and I'm going to miss you."

Grissom hugged his daughter in return as he replied softly. "I love you too, butterfly. And I'll miss you as well."

After they pulled back, Grissom stands up and shares one more goodbye with Sara before her and Belle walk out of the room so they could leave the house while Grissom heads up to the bedroom so he could pack for this unexpected trip back to Vegas.
