Chapter 5

It didn't take that long until a doctor came out but of course, it was way too long for Danny once more.
"Good news is except a slight skull contusion and a big bump on his forehead there is not more damage than before but considering the previous injury we are going to keep him here for 24 hours. We are already transferring him to ward 3 right now.
You can visit him right away."

"Detective Williams," the same doctor as just a few days ago greeted Danny upon seeing him enter the ward. "I had really thought Commander McGarrett had been serious this time "sticking to the rules and all". Never thought we would meet again so soon."
"It was an accident," Danny explained while shaking the doctor's hand. "Not his fault this time. Actually, he had even been the perfect patient.
How is he doing?"
"Severe headache a bit dizzy and nauseous. We are already counteracting with the meds he is taking anyway. He is resting now but you can see him."

Just like a few days before Steve had his eyes closed but this time Danny knew he wasn't sleeping.
He carefully knocked against the door frame to make himself noticed then he walked into the room took the chair and sat down beside the bed.

"Hey buddy," he said in a low voice before taking Steve's hand in his. "How are you feeling?
It's okay if you don't want to talk at the moment though."
Steve opened his eyes slowly.
"No, it's okay. The pain is gone. I'm just tired. I'm sorry Danny."
"Don't be. Get some rest."
"No, I mean for making you worry again."
"It was an accident. Not your fault."
"I know. I still made you worry though. Maybe you are right. I'm a trouble magnet. Can't even stays alone in my own house."
"Yeah, you should think about that. I mean general Pak, the stolen champbox, your mother sneaking in to make breakfast and all.
But accidents happen and you know what they say "Most accidents happen at home."
"That probably counts for the average people. I have accidents everywhere."

After another scan the following day the doctor told the two men that Steve could go home.
"Same rules as last time."
"Thanks doc, we appreciate this," Danny answered.
Steve didn't comment and didn't look very happy either.
"Hey! What's up? You can go home. I had expected a little more excitement," Danny said.
"Actually, I'd like to stay another day," Steve answered.
"What?! Danny burst out. "You kidding?"
"No." Steve stated.
"Why? You afraid that something is going to happen and you make me worry again?" Danny wanted to know.
"No. It's because I'm still a little dizzy."
"What?!" This time it was the doctor. "When I had examined you earlier, you've said you are fine."
"Don't worry," Danny said before Steve could say anything and added sarcastically "he is always saying he is fine. Even if a limb is missing."
Steve rolled his eyes a bit before answering.
"That is not true. Firstly, I've never lost a limb – just a vital organ and although I don't remember much, I am pretty sure I've never said "I'm fine" then and secondly, I haven't been dizzy then but moving my head from one of you to the other like in a tennis match brought it back!"
"Are you nauseous too?" the doctor asked.
"No, not yet. Hopefully, it won't come to that. Maybe the meds are still working though. I don't know. But better safe than sorry, right?"
"Okay," the doctor agreed. "We'll keep you here another 24 hours. If nothing comes up you go home tomorrow.
And this is only because of your previous injury. I can't justify another day. At least not because you are dizzy because of a major concussion."

"You good?" Danny asked when they were on the way back to Steve's house the following day,
"Yes. Please, don't ask me every other minute."
"It's not every other minute. I have asked you after you got the release papers and when you had buckled up. That's two times and not every two minutes."
"Yeah, sure. Can…can we leave it at that?
I'm feeling good and I am going to tell you if that is going to change, okay?"
"Okay. I am just caring."
"I know you do and I appreciate that very much."
They fell silent for a few minutes until Steve suddenly said "I am caring too. And that is why I am going to tell you."

Back home, Steve took a nap on the couch.
He had wanted to "just rest a bit" but when Danny checked on him ten minutes later, he had dozed off.

Another ten minutes later he was fast asleep and Danny went to fetch a blanket.
Back in the living room he debated with himself whether to spread the blanket over his friend or not.
'He is going to feel cold when he wakes up after sleeping without a cover.
Yes, but if he wakes up when you put the blanket on he doesn't get the needed rest and he might come up fighting, being torn from his sleep.'
In the end Danny did spread the blanket over his friend.
When Steve didn't stir he even tightened the blanket around him.

Two hours later Steve woke up with a groan.
A few more groans escaped his lips while he was trying to sit up.
When he finally did, he closed his eyes and groaned again.
Danny who hadn't seen the small movement from Steve's left hand to his right, thought his partner was dizzy from changing his position.
"Hey, take it easy super SEAL. Concentrate on your breathing. You will be fine in a few seconds. You just came up too fast."
"No. It's my arm Danny. I think I lay the wrong or had too much pressure on it."
Steve's voice was strained and he had closed his eyes again.
Then he suddenly leaned back against the couch and moved his left to the middle of his forearm.
He squeezed his eyes shut and breathed fast and heavily with an open mouth.
Danny stood up and went into the kitchen.
He returned a few seconds later with a glass of water painkillers and an ice pack.
"Here, take this," he offered the water and one pill to his friend.
Steve took both items swallowed the pill and emptied the glass of water.
When Danny offered him the icepack, Steve said "No, you…you have to help me out of the bandage."
"No way, Steve! You need this. You must not move your shoulder."
"And I don't intend to…to do that. Just…just my forearm. Danny, please." He begged.
The pained expression and the pleading look made Danny – against his better judgement - make a move forward and loosen the bandage.
As soon as it was loose enough, Steve grabbed his upper arm shortly above his elbow and pressed it close to his body.
At the same time he carefully moved his forearm and flexed his fingers.

After full agonizing two minutes Steve finally relaxed a bit.
Letting go of his right arm he held his left hand out to Danny and said "Now I could use the ice."
Danny gave it to him and Steve pressed it against his shoulder.

When the ice and the painkiller took effect, he said "thanks, Danny. You just saved my day."
"What was that?" Danny asked still a little concerned but with his friend relaxing he was calming down too.
"If I just knew. It felt like a cramp a pinched nerve a broken arm and getting stabbed – all at once."
"I am sorry."
"Not your fault."
"I know. But I am feeling with you nonetheless."
"Thanks Danno. Hopefully, it was the first and the last time this happened."

Thankfully, it was. Most likely because Steve always took care of how to position his whole body before he lay down somewhere even if it was just to rest a bit with no intention to sleep.
The pain meds he was taking were keeping him comfortable with the "normal" pain and although he was limited to do whatever he needed two hands for, he was getting along pretty well.

What did bother him though was his head.
Three days after the accident in the kitchen which meant ten days after initial injury, he still wasn't able to watch TV more than twenty minutes without his vision getting fuzzy and not more than thirty until a headache started to form.
He had tried with reading instead for several times but after thirty minutes the words were just words for him. He couldn't make any sense out of them anymore.

He was resting a lot during the day and slept more or less peacefully hour-wise during the night but he was also up early preparing coffee and a small breakfast for Danny.
"You don't have to do this. You know that, right?"
"Yes, Danny. I know. But this is at least something I can do."
"And I appreciate that very much. I just don't want you to interrupt your sleep to make me breakfast."
"I don't interrupt anything. I am awake anyway and I can rest and sleep the whole day." Steve explained a little annoyed.
"Okay," Danny held up his hands defensively. "Just saying."

PS: Tell me what you think.
