Chapter Two

Bright and early the next day, they left the house right after breakfast. Scully couldn't stop talking about the ghost as they drove toward the hospital. "Will you please get your mind off ghouls and goblins? We are about to see our child for the first time," Mulder said as he was driving.

"You're the one who purchased a haunted house right after our honeymoon."

"You said you wanted a super exciting place to live."

"I meant with a hot tub and an indoor pool! Not a freakin horror show!"

"Calm down, Scully. You're getting yourself all worked up again."

"At least it's taking my mind off my nervousness when it comes to the ultrasound. I hope the baby's okay. I hope that..."

"I know," he said as he reached across the console in the car and held her hand. "Scully, you're so brave."

Xxxooo

It was less than an hour later that they met with ultrasound technician. "Mr. and Mrs. Mulder?" she called out.

"I'm Fox Mulder and this is my lovely wife, Dr. Dana Scully."

The woman smiled as she lead them into the exam room. "Are you both excited to see your little miracle?"

Mulder and Scully looked at each other as they both thought of the two other little miracles they had loved and lost. "Yes," Scully said, her voice shaking a bit although she was trying to remain calm.

Minutes later, the technician started the sonogram. "Ohhh wow!" she said in surprise.

"What is it?" Scully questioned as she was almost afraid to know the answer.

"There's two!"

"We're having twins," Mulder said as he saw the two little grainy figures on the screen. "They look just like you, Scully."

"Are - are they okay?" Scully asked as her heart was jumping with fear. She was afraid to rejoice this blessing as she had been far too hurt before.

"Actually..." the ultrasound technician stated. "I'm afraid one of the twins isn't doing as well as the other. He or she is measuring a bit smaller and the heartbeat isn't as strong."

Mulder looked greatly concerned. "Does that mean...?"

"We can't really tell at this early stage. We'll do another ultrasound in a couple of weeks, then we should be able to have more information about the twins and their overall health."

Mulder gave Scully's hand a gentle squeeze as he gazed into her eyes. "Everything's gonna be alright, Scully. I just know it."

"I want to believe, but with everything we've been through, what if...?" she fretted.

"Just try not to worry. I know it isn't easy. Your doctor will want to see you in 2 weeks for a check-up during which you'll have another ultrasound," said the ultrasound technician.

"Thank you," Scully replied.

Xxxooo

After they arrived home and had eaten some lunch, Mulder had an idea to keep Scully's mind off what they had learned during their ultrasound appointment.

"You know that ghost we saw last night?" he said as they loaded the dishes into the dishwasher.

"Of course, how could I forget that?"

"I really do think we should investigate. You take the attic and I'll look in the basement."

"Why do I have to look in the attic?" Scully protested.

"Well, I'm sure both places are full of cobwebs and creepy-crawly things."

Scully shuddered. "Ohhh ok, let's grab the flashlights and go check everything out. Then we'll meet back here in the kitchen and discuss whatever we found... which I hope is not another ghost!"

"That's a great plan," said Mulder as he grabbed a couple of flashlights from a nearby drawer. "This will be fun, Scully. You'll see."

"Yeah right..." she responded, not as much convinced as Mulder appeared to be.
