Chapter 47

Beyond the Wall

It took over a year to take down the remaining Titans to be killed off and the all clear for people to start returning to Wall Maria. Kara and Jean were training new recruits and making sure they knew what the Scouts were. On their free time, they spent time together or with his mother, who was thrilled that the two were engaged. Kara and her grandfather started to form a relationship where she was now welcomed into the family. Since she was the only remaining relative, she was to inherit the money and house. Kara wasn't to happy on it, but soon accepted it as her and her grandfather got closer and he was more accepting to Jean. The grandfather seemed to get along with Levi and was happy that Kara had a good father figure in her life when her sperm donor wasn't.

The day finally came that the Scouts were going on the first mission, out beyond the walls. Kara and Jean rode side by side with Sasha and Conny on either side of them. Levi and Hange were leading the Scouts. Kara looked up to the sky. It was beautiful blue. Kara smiled.

"It's just as you thought, Hange." Levi said. Kara looked towards her father. Lucky was running at a good pace with Jean's horse. Kara was happy her horse had survived the mission to retrieve Wall Maria. "Most of the Titans had already gone inside Wall Maria. We've all but wiped them out and it only took us a single year." Kara and Jean share smiles.

"Then let's push straight forward exactly as we'd planned." Hange said. They rode on. A red smoke came up.

"A titan!" Jean said.

"So one actually showed up?" Conny said.

"Let's take a look." Kara called. They came up to a hill and pulled their horses to a stop. A titan was laying on the ground with its face to the ground. Scouts were already around it.

"Doesn't look like it can move much." Conny said.

"Even with those limbs, it still tried to drag itself to the wall, bit by bit." Sasha said. Kara moved her horse down towards it with Jean, Conny, and Sasha following behind it. It was hardly moving as they came to a stop. Floch was down there with Eren. Eren walked up to it and put his hand to it's head.

"Hey! Careful!" Floch said. Eren looked at it with emotionless eyes. He had been starting to change since the award ceremony. Almost pulling away from everyone. He lost his happy enthusiastic self and to Kara's watchful eyes, seemed to fall in a depressed state. He hardly smiled anymore.

"It was shipped to paradise, which means it's a fellow patriot." Eren said. Everyone gasped. Kara watched Eren. It was still a shock to her there was another world out there besides the Island and that Eren's father came from there and was what they now know Eren had the Attack Titan and Founding Titan in him. The Titan just stared at nothing. "Let's go. We're close." They rode off to catch up to the others.

It soon turned from grass to sand, so they knew they were getting close. Kara was riding up by Levi and Hange as they came to an area where a huge wall was built into the sand.

"This must be it." Kara said. Levi nodded. They came up to a sand path that would take them up. They slowly climbed it. They reached the top and Kara lost her breath. Blue water reached all the way to the horizon. Kara admired its beauty as everyone stared at it in wonder.

"It's beautiful." Kara whispered.

"Let's go down." Hange said, excitement in her voice. They reached the bottom. Armin was already running for the water. Kara was hopping on the sand, trying to pull her boots off. She finally got the last one off when Sasha and Conny grabbed her and they ran screaming in delight towards the water. Jean was right behind them. Levi was the only one that held back as everyone got in the water. The water was cold to her feet, but it was nice. Conny splashed Sasha and Kara. Kara squealed in delight as Sasha yelled in pain.

"Ow! My eyes! They burn!" Sasha yelled. Conny and Kara were laughing. Jean lifted some water to his mouth and drank. He spit it out.

"That's salty." Jean yelled. Sasha ran and tackled Kara in the water and they came up sputtering. Kara was smiling. Levi saw the kids having fun and Kara's huge smile on her face. He was happy to see them having fun. He didn't trust the water and stayed on shore. He was keeping an eye on Hange who was having to much fun. Sasha, Conny, and Kara looked at Jean. He was standing looking. All three got michievios grins as they didn't notice Eren talking and looking out across the horizon. Jean saw the smiles.

"Don't even think about it." Jean said, but the three ran at Jean and grabbed him, pulling him into a tackle and dunking him in the water. Jean glared at the three. Kara stood up and Jean followed. He had a mischivious look on his face. Kara's eyes widen.

"Jean. Don't..." Kara said, backing away. Jean approached and Kara took off running with Jean hot on her heals. Kara squealed as he caught her up and threw her over his shoulders. "Jean put me down." Jean turned towards the deeper waters and walked towards it. Conny and Sasha were giggling. None of them were paying attention to Eren. Levi was watching. Jean tossed her into the water. Kara jumped out of the water and tackled Jean into the water. Jean and her came up sputtering. Jean stood up and helped her up. Jean took her face in her hands.

"Now we don't have to worry on fighting Titans. Maybe we both can have a happy future." Jean said.

"I would like that Jean." Kara said, with a smile. Jean pulled her into a kiss. She returned it as the waves hit their legs. Kara knew they had a lot to do, but they got to see the ocean finally. Maybe it will be a good future, but Kara's thought of Marley and the promise to Erwin still ran through her mind. They still had to deal with Marley.
