Hello everyone!
I just wanted to thank those who have reviewed this story so far, it's motivating to know that there are people out there who are enjoying this!
I have noticed a couple of grammar mistakes when skimming over my previous chapters so I'll carve out some time this week to go back and amend those.
Hope that you all enjoy, see you soon! ~ Cam x
Chapter 4
Yami grunted in annoyance as his alarm began to blare obnoxiously from his nightstand. Without opening his eyes, his hand lashed out and smacked the offending device to silence it. Yami groaned and rammed his pillow securely over his head, he definitely did not want to get up today and go to work. Nope, no way. He knew The Captain would be in today and he definitely didn't want to explain to her why their one and only lead would likely be a dead end. He felt it in his bones that Malik and his team wouldn't find much out from the mysterious cards. Especially as the platinum blonde forensic analyst was liable to be pounding tequila until the early hours of the morning. Yami sighed and threw the covers off his body, shivering at the cold air that circulated his flat. It didn't help that all he slept in was a pair of black boxers but he didn't exactly want to spend his limited funds on a set of pyjamas.
Yami's crimson eyes landed on the neatly folded napkin on his nightstand, one corner was tucked securely under his alarm clock to ensure it didn't move. He lost his nerve to call the Little One when he got home last night. Bakura badgered him relentlessly as to when he was going to call the club owner and ask him out after they parted ways last night.
"He really liked you, you goddamned idiot. Just make sure you call him before Ryou catches wind of this and is on my ass for MY friend ghosting HIS friend." Bakura's words were slurred already so Yami was a bit concerned about his partner today as well as rubbed one of his eyes, as if he could physically scrub away the memory of his partner's many rants about the subject.
One of Yami's tanned hands gently picked up the napkin and he looked briefly at Yugi's signature and mobile phone number. The Little One was so adorable, the little heart that he dotted the 'I' in his name made Yami's chest clench. Yugi's vibrant amethyst eyes haunted Yami's thoughts and he felt his stomach clench painfully. Nobody had ever caught his attention like Yugi did, as well as being stunning, the small man must have been tenacious and intelligent to own a business like he does at such a young age. Yami's thoughts then drifted to his Little One's ass in those tight leather trousers last night . . .
He shook his head and brusquely stood up from his warm bed. Nope, if he let his thoughts go down that road then he'd never make it to work. Yami glared at the blinking red numbers of his alarm clock, 08:00 so he had an hour to get out of his flat. Ryou and Bakura were picking him up to go to work as he had left his car at the station last night to go to Millennium.
To most, Yami's flat would be lacklustre at best. However, as the young detective spent the majority of his time either in work or out in general, he didn't see the point in wasting his money on a more expensive place. It was a studio; the walls were painted a forgettable grey with matching grey carpet throughout. The front door led into a small living room area on the left and a kitchen on the right. Yami had tried to make it his own with a black sofa and matching black curtains in the minute living room space, it was accented with burgundy cushions. A wool blanket of the same colour was draped over the back of the two-seater. Past the living room/kitchen area was a double bed tucked into an alcove, there was just enough room for a wardrobe alongside the left-hand wall next to the bed. The right side housed Yami's nightstand with the offending alarm clock. Yami kept the black and burgundy theme going throughout. His bedding was checked black and charcoal grey with two burgundy pillow-cases. The door to the miniscule bathroom was next to the night stand which suited Yami just fine, especially if he had been out drinking too late with Bakura and needed easy access to a toilet.
Yami stumbled into the bathroom and flicked on the light switch – stripping off his boxers as he lurched towards the much-needed promise of a hot shower. He did his best to keep his thoughts off of Yugi as he brushed his teeth before stepping under the hot spray he started as he entered the bathroom. He sighed in pleasure as he washed, mentally groaning when he had to get out all-too-soon. Yami walked back into the main body of his flat naked, towel drying his hair as he yawned once more, his jaw cracked with the force of it. He dragged his feet over to his wardrobe as he fished out a pair of charcoal grey trousers and a black shirt, topped off with black dress shoes. He shrugged on his leather holster across his shoulders and clipped his badge onto the black belt that encircled his waist. He absently brushed his hair, knowing it would naturally go back into its star shape as it dried. His eyes slid to his alarm clock, ready to go with ten minutes to spare, he'd just grab a coffee when he got to the station. His attention drifted from the blinking, red numbers to the napkin tucked under the corner of the alarm clock once more. He grabbed it and folded it neatly into his wallet before placing it into his back pocket. Yami vowed to call the Little One today and ask him out.
With that thought in mind he grabbed his coat and left his flat, a wide smile splitting his face in two. As he locked his front door and began to make his way out of the building, he wondered if Yugi would be willing to meet up some time this week. He didn't know whether he could wait much longer than that to see him again.
Yami was secretly glad that he hadn't bumped into any of his neighbours on his way out this morning. He loved old Mrs Himiko dearly, but he didn't want to be held up today with Ryou picking him up, and the old woman loved to chat Yami's ear off.
Yami was happy that Ryou was already there a little early, his small grey vehicle idling happily by the curb. The white-haired man waved cheerfully at Yami once he spied him. Yami jogged over to the passenger seat, a little curious as to where his partner was this morning.
"Morning Yami!" Ryou chirped once Yami popped the door open.
"Hi Ryou," Yami slid into the seat. "Where's Bakura?"
Ryou laughed and pointed over his shoulder to the backseat. Yami turned and groaned loudly. His partner was stretched over the backseat, his arm thrown over his eyes to block out the daylight. Yami should've guessed Bakura would be hungover today with how much he was drinking before Yami left the night before.
"Dammit this is why I got a taxi home early; he's going to be absolutely useless today and Valentine is in," Yami growled.
"I didn't know the Captain was going to be in today, thought she was off for another couple of days because of all those double shifts she pulled." Ryou said as he pulled away from Yami's building.
"You know Mai, she can't stay away from work for too long," Yami laughed. "Probably why she got promoted at 35."
"Would you two shut the fuck up?" Bakura growled as he removed his arm away from his eyes. "Ryou, can you stop taking the corners so quickly? It's like being on a freaking rollercoaster back here and I will barf."
"If you throw up in my car I will kill you in your sleep tonight, 'Kura." Ryou snapped, glaring at his fiancé in the rear-view mirror.
Yami smothered a laugh when his partner sunk back into his seat like a chastised puppy, still looking a little green around the gills. The rest of the car ride went by quickly with Yami and Ryou making idle conversation and Bakura moaning about how shitty he felt. Before Yami knew it, Ryou was gliding into a space in the underground car park.
"Ryou, couldn't you have parked a little closer?" Bakura whined.
"Bakura it's a five-minute walk, you're so lazy sometimes." Ryou snapped. "Come on, the fresh air will probably do you some good." Ryou threw open his door and got out of the car, slamming the door behind him.
Bakura winced and clutched his head. "Today is going to be a long day."
"You're telling me, pal." Yami laughed as he got out of the car and made his way into the building.
Yami shoved his hands in his pockets and chuckled softly to himself when he could hear Ryou raking Bakura over the coals for his current state behind him. Yami loved his partner to death, but the guy definitely did not know when to stop drinking when he started. Usually, the station was abuzz with activity at all hours of the day but today, to Yami's surprise and Bakura's likely relief, there wasn't that many people milling about. Although that did leave one major problem for Yami.
"Atemu!" A voice barked.
As the station was quiet, as soon as Yami stepped onto his floor, Captain Valentine was on his ass. Yami hid his wince as he was caught trying to sneak past her office to get to his desk. She was a tall woman who was in great shape, her uniform showed off her muscular arms and toned body. Her long blonde hair was gathered into an elegant bun at the nape of her neck, although her bangs always seemed to spring free and frame her face. She had wide, violet eyes and wore simple, yet elegant make-up that suited her perfectly. Captain Valentine had her hands on her hips as she jerked her chin towards her office, silently telling Yami that she wanted a word with him, before she disappeared inside. Yami sighed and ran a hand through his bangs as he followed her, his shoulders slumped. He closed the door behind him as he entered her office, not bothering to take his jacket off just yet.
Captain Valentine was already sat behind her desk, a black Domino PD laptop hummed happily atop the nondescript light wood desk. Yami was always surprised by her office, there was little to none personal items decorating it. It always looked like she had just moved in when she had been a Captain for almost three years already. The youngest Captain in the history of the police department in Domino City. She stared at Yami silently, her pointed chin rested comfortably on the back of her hands with her elbows braced on the desk. She pursed her lips and sighed as Yami sunk into the chair opposite of her.
"So, that missing person's case, has there been any update since I haven't been here?" Valentine asked brusquely.
"We've had some good information from an informant of ours, Bakura has also procured some business cards that we believe the culprit had given to the victims. Malik's team are running tests to see if we can get any fingerprints, DNA, or residue from them that could give us a lead." Yami said, evenly.
The Captain let out a small laugh and smiled at Yami. "Hon, I've seen Malik this morning and he looks like dog shit. I wouldn't be expecting too much out of him today unless his lab tech's have finally pulled their fingers out." She absently stirred a steaming cup of coffee with a tea spoon. "I'm assuming the informant you saw was the Tomb Keeper?"
Yami nodded. "He has led us to suspect that there is an organisation that may have relocated here from Tokyo. Unfortunately, he also seemed to think that they're some sort of religious sector. Bakura and I need to do some digging to verify this information."
Valentine smiled at Yami. "Well, Well Atemu I half expected you to have absolutely fuck all to give me when I pulled you in this morning. It's not concrete but it's some leads and that a hell of a lot better than those detectives in the station uptown have gotten. I knew I was right to put you and Mao on this. A fucking cult though, what support do you need?"
"Without verifying the information I'm not one-hundred percent sure. We don't know what they're after, where they operate or why they have taken Rei Dean and the other victims."
"The good news is there has been no bodies which could mean that they're still alive." Valentine pointed out.
"Or that they're good at hiding their bodies." Yami sighed.
"True enough, but you and Mao are doing a decent job Atemu." She nodded sagely, taking a sip of her coffee.
Yami straightened up in surprise, "I thought you'd be chewing my ass out for not having more if I'm honest.
"Oh hon, you've only had the case for two weeks and you have a lead. Those idiots uptown had this case for a month and they got fuck all. Just get Malik's team on those cards, I want an update by the end of the week otherwise I'll tan your hide – got it?"
"Got it, thank you Captain." Yami stood from his chair, nodded his head in respect and backed out of the office quickly before she could change her mind.
After he left, Mai Valentine chuckled to herself and took another sip of her coffee. She will try and stave off the vultures that were her higher ups. She didn't really think it was fair that the uptown lot couldn't be assed to progress the investigation and then her team were taking the flack for slow progress.
Mai sighed as her phone rang again, all she wanted to do was tell them all to fuck off. The only thing she could really hope for is that Yami and Bakura cracked it before someone else went missing.
Or worse, turned up dead.
Yami leaned back into his chair and scrubbed a hand over his face. It was now 13:00 and the morning had proven to be less than useful for their investigation. Malik was hungover and as useless as a chocolate teapot. Bakura had disappeared for three hours to Ra knows where. And Yami had been researching Egyptian religious factors that use the Eye of Horus as a symbol which has been less than fruitful. However, Yami had another idea that he was hoping would lead somewhere. Yami jumped a little when a heavy folder landed on his desk. Malik stood there smirking at him.
"Tough day, chief?" Malik chirped, leaning against Bakura's desk where Ryou had been perched the night before.
Yami rolled his eyes as he lifted the folder, "I see you've decided to join the land of the living."
"Oh yeah and I decided to use my revival to annoy the shit out of you." Malik laughed and pointed to the folder in Yami's hands. "This is the analysis on those cards. There are some partial fingerprints on there which is really surprising, we ran them through the database and got nothing."
"So, our guy hasn't been arrested before?" Yami sighed and opened the folder, flicking through the reports. "That's just fucking perfect."
"He definitely hasn't, there isn't anything else on them apart from general crap from the victim's flats." Malik opened his mouth to say more but was interrupted.
"Malik, get your flat ass off of my desk." Bakura barked as he stomped over.
Malik's eyes flashed as he turned to the white-haired detective. "Mao, you're fuckin' testing my infinite patience this week."
Bakura merely snorted and threw himself into his desk chair. Yami looked at his partner with a raised eyebrow. "I see you've revived as well."
Bakura grunted. "Yeah, I went back to see the Tomb Keeper but he's fucked off somewhere."
"Well, he tends to disappear when he's doing business. He disappeared for a whole month before." Yami said as he handed the folder to Bakura. "Malik was just giving me the rundown about those cards you found."
Bakura flicked through them and sighed, running a hand through his long hair. "Well, shit."
"Exactly, I've got some blood work I need to do for another case so I'll leave you guys to it." Malik waved before he disappeared to go back downstairs to the lab.
Yami looked at Bakura with a raised eyebrow. "Was it me or was Malik wearing the same clothes that he had on yesterday?"
"Oh yeah, he was hammered so he stayed at Yugi's last night," Bakura let out a bark of laughter. "Yugi has a flat above the club so I dumped him on Yugi's sofa. Speaking of whom," Bakura looked at Yami and waggled his eyebrows. "When are you calling the pipsqueak?"
"If you must know, I was going to call him soon. He told me not to call until the afternoon because he works late nights." Yami rolled his eyes at the slow, perverted smile that split Bakura's face. "Get your head out the gutter, it'll probably just be dinner."
"The way you were staring at his ass last night, I bet it's just dinner." Bakura snickered as Yami went bright red.
"Shut the fuck up, Bakura!" Yami snapped. "Can we please come back to the case; I have to tell you something."
"Okay princess, don't get your panties in a twist." Bakura put down the file and gave Yami his undivided attention. "Fire away."
"So, I've been researching religious sectors all day who may coincide with the Eye of Horus and haven't had any joy. So, I started thinking it's probably a bastardised version of something else."
"Would make sense why you can't find anything on it." He nodded sagely. "Go on."
"So, I started looking into local Egyptologists and Historians in the area that might be able to help us." Yami turned his computer monitor to the left so Bakura could see from his seat. "Look who I found."
"Dr Ishizu Ishmael . . . Ishmael?" Bakura's head snapped towards Yami, his eyes bugging in shock. "Marik has a fucking sister who is a respectable member of society?"
"Apparently so," Yami laughed. "I emailed her today and she got back to me really quickly. She said she's in Egypt at the moment procuring artifacts from the National History Museum in Cairo. I've given her the rundown and she said she'll start to use her sources to look into things but she'll be back in Domino next week."
"Well, that's something at least. Are we sure she can be trusted with a brother like Marik?" Bakura frowned a little and leaned back into his seat.
"What choice do we have? She's local, an expert in her field to the point where she's pulled in to consult on a worldwide level. If she can't help us then nobody can." Yami nodded. "I'm hoping that if we can figure out what they worship or what they're after, it'll help us figure out where they're holed up."
"True enough. Ryou's waving me over for lunch, do you want to join us?"
"Nah I'm good, I'll stay here and see if there's anything else I can find for now. If not, I'll start working on that B&E that we were given this morning."
Bakura nodded. "Okay, I'll be back soon."
Yami smiled a little when Bakura tapped his shoulder as he walked past. Bakura came across as gruff and unfriendly but he did deeply care about people and Yami knew that he wanted to find the victims alive and well just as much as Yami did. When he saw his partner's white head disappear downstairs, he slowly got out Yugi's napkin that he had stowed away in his wallet this morning. Yami took a deep breath and quickly typed the numbers onto the landline on his desk before he could chicken out.
"Hello?" Yami shot up in his chair, his heart thundering in his chest when Yugi answered the phone on the third ring.
Oh shit, oh shit! Why did he answer so quickly I needed time to think of what I was going to say! Yami inwardly panicked.
"Hello? Who is this?" Yugi's voice sounded uncertain and Yami knew he had to speak now otherwise his Little One was going to hang up.
"Hey Yugi, it's Yami. From last night?" Yami shifted in his seat, he sounded nervous. He cleared his throat.
"Yami! I wasn't expecting you to call so soon," Yugi blurted. "Sorry, that made it sound like I didn't want to hear from you – but I did – Oh fuck I'm sorry I'm messing this up." Yugi was speaking quickly, nervous.
A warm feeling bubbled up from Yami's stomach and he found a smile creeping across his face. Yugi was nervous, his voice high and concerned, and if Yugi was nervous that meant Yami was worrying over nothing.
"Hey don't worry, I got what you actually meant." Yami chuckled deeply.
Yugi laughed lightly in response. "Thanks! What can I do for you Yami?"
"Well, Yugi, you can do me the pleasure of being my date this weekend. I have a very rare Saturday off, providing that you can get away from the club for the evening."
Yugi was silent for a moment. "I think I could, two seconds Yami." Yami could hear muffled voices where Yugi had covered the microphone to speak with someone. "Yami? Are you still there?"
"Yeah, I'm here Yugi." Yami was worrying his bottom lip between his lip.
"Saturday is perfect, Jou just said he's happy to run the place for the evening." Yugi chirped, excitement tinged his voice.
Yami sat up straight in his desk chair. "Great! I'll book us somewhere for dinner, Bakura said your flat is above Millennium, can I pick you up around seven?"
"Sounds great Yami, I'll see you then. Shall I save this number?"
"This is my extension for work but I don't mind you saving it, I'll text you on my mobile now so you can save my number."
"Bye Yami, looking forward to it."
"Bye Yugi, can't wait to see you again."
Yami hung up the phone, his heart pounded in his chest as his stomach twisted. Saturday couldn't come quick enough for the young detective.
So I decided to make Ishizu Marik's sister instead of Malik, for the purpose of the story it worked a little better this way.
Thank you for reading!
