Christmas Music
Mickie's POV
Christmas is suppose to be a time of celebration with friends and family. However mother nature seemed to have different plans. I was suppose to fly back home a couple days ago but a blizzard came through which halted all my travel plans. The snow kept falling to the point that I couldn't get out of my driveway. If lady luck is on my side, I will be able to fly out for New Year's. I released a long sigh while making sure my boots were laced up tightly, my eyes stared out the patio door at the thick, white blanket covering the ground. I reached over to grab my guitar and a backpack that I filled earlier. Nothing major, just my notebook for jotting down notes whenever I am inspired and a thermos with hot cocoa. I opened the back door to a massive chilly breeze that made my hair go wild in the wind. The temperature was way below freezing but a little cold isn't going to ruin my mojo. Ever since I moved to this place, I found myself exploring the forest that wrapped around my small city. It seemed so peaceful, I felt inspired being surrounded by nature. There was a certain spot that I made my own, about a ten minute walk from my house. It was by a large creek and normally a beautiful field of flowers. There was a large oak tree that I always sat under and listened to the sounds of nature. It was so peaceful but for the longest time, I felt like I was being watched and not by the animals either.
That is absurd, I would always shake the thoughts of paranoia out of my head. No one was allowed to hunt in these woods, something about it being a sacred ground or something. All I know is that this forest is supposedly special and it really does feel that way. It's always so hard to describe but it feels like I am being drawn to this place like.. a magnetic pull. The walk there was super quiet minus the crackling tree branches and the small howl of the wind. If anyone saw me out here, they would probably take me for some sort of lunatic. My spot came into view as I noticed that snowflakes were starting to fall again. I was hoping that the snow would cease for a little bit longer until I got back inside. No matter. The second I sat down, I realized that I had forgotten something I was meaning to bring out here today. "Fuck.. I guess I will make another trip." People would still call me crazy, I have made a friend out in these woods. A creature that could easily rip me in two but yet, it doesn't seem threatened by my presence. A sigh left me as I set my backpack down in front of me. I opened it and grabbed my notebook and my thermos. This wind was trying to slice me in half despite my heavy jacket I am wearing. I need to warm up a little before I start playing; the hot cocoa was just what I needed.
I set everything else aside and allowed my fingers to strum the strings a couple times. My notebook was opened to the page with the lyrics just in case I had forgotten them. There was a sound of rustling that caused my playing to cease. A black wolf with piercing green eyes peeked through the bushes as I could only flash a small smile. "Oh it's you. You're back." I acknowledged the presence of the canine, who cocked it's head over to the side. I don't know what it is about this creature, it always seems to lurk around whenever I am playing my guitar. For something that is known to be territorial and hostile, this wolf is the exact opposite. At first, I was terrified of this beast but I have grown accustomed to its presence. I went back to playing my guitar. There was a song that I had been working on for a while now. I wanted to perform the finished product for my family but fate had other plans. Several months had been solely practicing this song which was perfect for the holiday. "Today's Christmas, you shouldn't be alone like me."
The wolf normally kept a safe distance, it would always lay by the creek about twenty feet away. This time was different, I noticed that it had gotten up and slowly inched its way closer toward me. "You must like hearing me play." I spoke to the black canine as the wolf's tail wagged slightly. My heart started beating a little faster as it approached me. I wasn't sure what was going to happen or if it had decided to pounce on me. Instead its massive body was not even a foot away from me. Personally I was pretty stunned to say the least, this was amazing. A beautiful yet wild creature was so close to me. It's head rose up a little to look at me, it was almost like it was waiting for something. Right.. The wolf really likes to hear me play and sing; best not to keep my audience waiting I suppose. "It's my favorite time of the year and I am so happy you're here. The lights and smiles around town, yeah it's Christmas. The smell of the peppermint candles, hanging stockings on my mommas mantle. Writing letters to Santa, I always miss this.." I looked down beside me to see that tail swaying side to side in content as I continued playing. "It's your Christmas presence, that's my favorite present. It's the gift that's all for giving, and the very reason that I cherish the season. I'm all wrapped up in your Christmas Presence.."
It was at that moment that I realized that my friend had disappeared from the spot beside me. I never heard any movement but I was also very focused on practicing. When did it leave? This seemed odd though, the wolf has never left this early into my practice session. It normally waits until I am done. I forgot to bring the wolf some meat I saved for it. I guess I am all alone for the moment. I cleared my throat and continued to play. "The Snowflakes and my neighbors good cheer. Bells and kids caroling in my ears. All of this lets me know that you're near. Yeah it's Christmas. Unwrap love, hope, and laughter because that's all that matters-"
My heart almost stopped as I looked over toward the creek to see someone walking toward me. It was a woman that I have never seen before, sporting a blue denim jacket and a pair of black jeans. That was hardly winter attire, what the hell is this woman thinking? She got closer and that allowed me to get a better look at her. The first thing that stood out to me was her eyes, they were a bright hazel color. She had long, dark brown hair that trailed down about halfway down her back. She had to be a couple inches taller than me, curvy in all the right places. One thing was certain, this woman is beautiful. A face that I would surely recognize in this small town of mine. "Who are you?"
"So you are the one that has the heavenly singing voice, it really makes sense to me." The mystery woman gave me a smirk as she joined me underneath the tree. The flirtatious remark caught me off guard and my cheeks instantly started to heat up. "Your song is really pretty. I am taking it you wrote it yourself." The woman's eyes glanced down toward the notebook, completely ignoring my first question to her.
"I did." She clicked her lips together but didn't really respond back to me. Instead her hands went into her pockets, her eyes staring up toward the sky. I don't understand what a stranger is doing out here. Does she not know how dangerous this place could be? "What are you doing out here?"
"Someone like you shouldn't be alone out here, the woods could be dangerous." The brunette spoke like she was reading my mind. That tells me that she is familiar with the area if she knows about this place.
"I could say the same to you. I like to come out here to practice." I used to think the same thing about these woods until I met my wolf friend. I haven't seen another wolf around or any predators for that matter. I don't know how the canine would react to this stranger though.
"Don't let me stop you, it was your singing that brought me here." She complimented my singing once again but her attention stayed glancing up at the clouds in the sky. "Probably shouldn't stay out here too much longer, the storm is going to get worse again." Could the brunette tell that from merely observing the sky or did I miss that report this morning? I have to agree with the stranger, the temperature has been dropping massively, the wind has picked up speed. I hadn't really noticed until now. I feel at peace out here. "I hope that you aren't spending Christmas alone like me."
"Sadly I am, the blizzard made it impossible to fly out to my family." The woman's eyes seemed to dart toward the ground upon hearing my dilemma. I took the time to start gathering my things and putting everything back in my backpack. One last sip of hot cocoa and everything was pretty much packed except for my guitar. I was about to get up whenever I saw a hand extended out toward me, she gave me a smile as I reached over to grab her hand. Warmth. Upon grabbing her hand, my body felt like it was heating up on the spot. This sensation of comfort felt familiar but I couldn't figure out why. The brunette pulled me up with ease, keeping that captivating smile across her lips. "Thank you."
"I am sorry that the blizzard ruined your plans. A pretty woman shouldn't have to be by yourself on Christmas." She was flirting again but it didn't bother me. This stranger is gorgeous in her own right, way prettier than what I feel like right now. I still can't comprehend how she is wearing clothes like that and felt so warm to the touch.
An idea crossed my mind, it was a pretty ridiculous one to say the least. Everyone else would say that I am insane for entertaining the idea but everyone could use a friend on Christmas. "...Say, would you like to join me? You said you were spending it alone too. We could both use the company."
The woman looked at me baffled, her lips clicked together a few times. She seems very taken back but my question and I don't blame her. I would be confused too if a stranger was inviting me home. "You're inviting some random stranger you met in the woods to spend Christmas with you."
"Well if I knew your name, you wouldn't be as much as a stranger." I am such an idiot, we have been talking for a couple minutes now and I haven't gotten her name yet. I need to know her name. I want to hate how I am so drawn to this brunette that I have never seen before. It's pull.. It's almost magnetic.
"Call me Daisy." The brunette introduced herself with a smug little grin. Daisy huh? That ring really doesn't ring any bells, I thought she would have been from around here but I could be wrong. Daisy inched herself a little closer, leaning over to get closer to my face. "How do you know that I am not going to eat you or something? I am pretty hungry and cute brunettes are my favorite."
Watching Daisy lick her lips like some kind of predator made my entire core tremble, it caught me completely off guard. I knew that she was teasing me but at the time, I wasn't completely sure. The hunger in her eyes were telling a different story or is that lust? I am intrigued. I'll bite. "Considering what I see on the regular here, I think I could handle you." I decided to speak back in my own flirty tone which amused the brunette, who gave me a quick glance from head to toe. Yeah she isn't being subtle in the slightest and I am perfectly fine with that. "What do you say, Daisy? Are you joining me?"
"I'd love to Mickie." That got a smile out of me as I led the way back toward my house, Daisy following close behind me as the snow started falling more and more. I have some food that I brought for a Christmas dinner in case I really couldn't travel home. I wasn't feeling the Christmas spirit today, but now I have a reason to cook for a bit. Afterwards I can bring the wolf some extra scraps to make up for forgetting about it earlier. The closer I got to the house, the more I realized something was off. Then it hit me, I never told Daisy my name.. Who is she and how does she know who I am?
