Callie didn't notice the light lavender sweater resting in the backseat until she was already back to her apartment and she reached back for her purse. Arizona had on the oversized sweater but removed it when she grew warm on the way to dinner. She felt a bit more weight to it than she expected when she grabbed the sweater to bring it inside so she could return it at work tomorrow. When she slipped her hand into the pocket to check to see what it was, she found Arizona's iPod Shuffle.
She had noticed Arizona liked to play music from it while working on charts or surgical plans. An earbud in one ear while the other free to hear someone calling for her or her pager. She often wondered what Arizona was listening to but hadn't found a way to bring it up more naturally than directly asking. She bit her lip and decided it couldn't do any harm for her to take a look at the music Arizona had on her iPod. She was in the stage of their relationship where she wanted to soak up everything she could about Arizona and this felt like some sort of cheat code. She swirled her thumb on the scroll wheel after turning it on and moved to the playlist option.
Playlists with names like "songs to chart to" and "running mix" were intercut with more personal sounding mixes like "Germany 1990" and "Tim would've liked". As Callie moved her thumb to scroll down the list she found a playlist she couldn't help but click into that was titled simply "Calliope".
As she started to review the songs she found that Arizona had compiled a list of songs they had talked about, some they danced to when Arizona came over for dinner and a few she assumed just made Arizona think of her. Seeing songs she mentioned in passing made the list brought a warm smile to her lips.
When she reached the bottom of the list she paused and reached for the aux cord so she could plug the iPod in and hear it through her car speakers.
Wise men say
Only fools, only fools rush in
Oh, but I, but I, I can't help falling in love with you
As Elvis crooned through the speakers she reached for her phone and dialed Arizona's number, one of the few she had memorized.
"Miss me already?" Arizona asked as she answered the phone in her apartment across town.
"You left your sweater and iPod," Callie said as she rested her head against the cool glass of the window. "I'll bring it to you in the morning."
"And you're playing Elvis in the background," Arizona said as she heard the unmistakable melody over the phone. "Did you find the playlist with your name on it?"
"Are you mad?" Callie asked nervously.
"No," Arizona answered. "I know it's an old song, the Elvis one not the Beyonce or Kelly Clarkson, but my parents used to dance to it in the kitchen and it always makes me feel romantic."
"Next time you come over we can dance in the kitchen to it," Callie offered with a smile Arizona couldn't see over the phone line.
"Yeah?" Arizona beamed from her spot on the couch.
"Yeah," Callie confirmed.
"I really want to slow dance in your kitchen with you, Calliope," Arizona said.
"I haven't done that with anyone before but I think with you it would be pretty great," Callie admitted. She just had to make sure Cristina wouldn't be home or she'd never hear the end of it.
"Doing anything with you is pretty great," Arizona said with a soft laugh.
"Flirt," Callie accused lightly.
"With you, yes," Arizona said. "Now go inside and go to bed. You have rounds at seven and I have a consult I might need you for at nine."
"I am always game to help out peds," Callie said as she unplugged the iPod while balancing the phone between her ear and shoulder. "I'll see you tomorrow."
"Goodnight Calliope," Arizona said before disconnecting the line.
Getting out of the car Callie had a smile she wasn't sure would ever come off of her face. She started humming 'Can't Help Falling In Love' to herself as she crossed the parking lot.
