Daryl's P.O.V
" D…...Daryl? R…..Rick?" Sam asked us as she looked at us confused. Both me and Rick were at her side and the room door started to open and I turned my head to see Hershel come into the room to see that Sam was awake and he came over to the bed. I sighed in relief to see her bright brown eyes finally opened again. Rick sat down on the edge of the bed and took one of Sam's hands into his.
" Sam? Can you hear me?" Rick asked her as Sam turned her head to look at him.
" Where are we at? Where's Carl? Is he okay?" Sam asked as she started to look around for the boy hoping to see him in the room.
" He's downstairs. He's safe, thanks to you, Sam." Rick said as he ran his fingers through her hair with a smile on his face. Sam had a look of relief on her face once she heard that and then looked towards me with a small smile on her lips. I smiled back at her but no one was able to see it besides her.
" Who's he?" Sam asked as her eyes landed on Hershel.
" This is Hershel. We're in his house, you had an accident, all right." Rick said as Sam turned her head back to Rick.
" Right. I….I remember now." Sam said as she looked towards the ceiling.
" Looks like me and you are the same now, huh Rick?" Sam said as she looked back at Rick with a joking tone in her voice.
" Yea, we are. But you know you don't have to call me Rick, you know that right? You can just call me dad if you want, ok." Rick said to Sam, which then I noticed tears starting to build in her eyes as she nodded her head to him as she gave him a big smile.
" How do you feel, young lady?" Hershel asked Sam as she turned her head to look at him.
" In pain, but okay I guess." Sam said as she looked at him, wiping the tears away from her eyes.
" Yea, we know." Rick said with a little chuckle under his breath. Sam turned her head to him and lightly hit his arm, which made him chuckle again.
" What about Sophia? Did you guys find her?" Sam asked as she looked at both me and Rick.
" Not yet, but I'm about to go out and look for her." I said as I noticed the look on Rick's face when he looked over at me really quick and then back at Sam.
" Then let's go. We have to find her." Sam said as she started to sit up, but was immediately pushed back down in the bed by Rick. This girl was a lot crazier than I thought. She was still wanting to go out there to look for Sophia with bullet fragments still in her body.
" Sam, no, you can't." Rick said as he shook his head no.
" Why dad?" Sam asked Rick, which made him freeze a bit after hearing her say that till he focused back on her.
" You won't be going anywhere for a while. You still have bullet fragments inside your body." Hershel said and Rick nodded his head to agree with him.
" Great. Just great." Sam said as she just rolled her eyes.
" Shane and one of Hershel's men went out to get the supplies to get them out of you. Until then you have to rest." Rick said as he started to rub Sam's head with his thumb.
" Daryl, you have to find Sophia, please." Sam said as she looked back at me and I could see the sadness in her eyes and I could tell that she felt bad for what happend.
" I'll find her. I promise you." I said with determination in my voice and in my eyes and she nodded her head to me.
" You should have seen it, Daryl." Sam said to me as she looked at me.
" What?" I asked her, crossing my arms over my chest.
" The deer. It was so beautiful. It was so close to touch. Carl looked…." Sam started to say till she stopped talking. My whole body froze when she just laid there, eyes still opened like she just died.
" Sam?" Rick worriedly asked as he lightly tapped her face trying to get her to respond. I looked from Sam to Hershel until Sam's body started to shake and was throwing herself everywhere.
" What the hell is happening?!" I yelled as I placed my hands on her shoulders trying to keep her body still. Hershel came over to me and ripped my hands off her. I stared at him and I felt the urge to hit him but I let that go and tried to get past him to get back over to Sam. Hershel got in front of me and stretched out his arms to stop me from doing anything.
" Don't, it's a seizure. If the both of you hold her down, you could hurt her more." Hershel said as he looked at the both of us as Rick got up from the bed and moved away from her.
" You can't stop it?!" I asked him as I watched Sam.
" She has to just go through it." Hershel said as I stood there watching Sam throw herself around like she was a fish out of water. I felt completely hopeless not being able to help her in some way. Sam finally stopped moving after a while and she was out cold again. Hershel went over to her side immediately to check on her.
" Her brain isn't getting enough blood. Her pressure is dropping. She needs another transfusion." Hershel said as he looked back at the both of us.
" Okay, I'm ready." Rick said as he walked over to Hershel and stuck out his arm towards him.
" If I take any more blood out of your body, it could shut down, you could go into a coma...Or cardiac arrest." Hershel said as he looked over at Rick.
" You're wasting time. Do it now!" Rick growled at Hershel. I stood there and watched as Patricia ran over to Rick and started to get him ready for another transfusion. I couldn't take another minute of this anymore. I growled and I walked over to my crossbow and I stormed out of the room.
" Daryl! Daryl!" I heard Rick yelling for me, but I didn't stop, I kept on going. As I got to the bottom of the stairs, I stormed past the others, who just looked at me confused.
" What the hell happened Daryl!" I heard Glenn ask as I got off the porch. I went straight into the woods and into a small little clearing and I threw my crossbow to the ground, I felt like I couldn't even breathe. Tears were starting to fill my eyes, and no matter how hard I tried to stop them, they just kept coming. This was my fault, if I had told her not to go, then she'd be fine right now and not in pain. I turned and punched a tree, trying to get rid of the pain that I was feeling in my chest. I looked up at the sky and I screamed at the top of my lungs.
" You like this, huh! You like people being in pain and suffering! Well, you can't have Sam! You're not going to take her away!" I yelled as I continued to punch the same tree over and over again. Till I fell to the ground and didn't even have the strength to get back up on my feet again.
Rick's P.O.V
I was back in the same chair right next to Sam. I had no idea where Daryl went, but I knew he wasn't giving up on her so I wasn't going to after I saw that there was hope for her when she woke up. Glenn walked into the room and walked over to the other chair on the opposite side of me and sat down in the chair and looked over at me, " Before it happened, we were just standing there in the woods and this deer just crossed right in front of us. I swear it just planted itself right there and after noticing the look on Carl's face. And as I watched both Sam and Carl make their way towards the deer, it was like time stopped at that moment when Sam pushed Carl out of the way. At that moment...I thought I just lost Sam." I said as tears started to go down my face again.
" That's what she was talking about when she was awake, not getting shot or what happened at the church. She was talking about something so beautiful, something living. There's still life in us, a place maybe like this. We just have to be strong enough after everything that's happened to us so far." I said as I looked up at Glenn and all he did was nodded his head to me.
Hershel came into the room not long after me talking to Glenn and started to check on Sam again. I was starting to get nervous again as I watched him and hoped for some good news for a change. Hershel took his stethoscope out of his ears, he sighs and he shook his head as he turned his head to look at me, " She's still losing blood faster than was can replace it. And with the swelling in her abdomen we can't wait any longer or she'll slip away from under our fingers. Now I need to know right now if you want me to do this, because I think your daughter's out of time. You have to make a choice." Hershel said to me waiting for an answer from me.
" What choice?" Glenn asked as he looked at Hershel.
" A choice, either you let Sam go or you have me save her without the equipment." Hershel said to Glenn as he turned his head to look at me again.
" Do it." I said without hesitation in my voice, with that being a good enough answer, Hershel looked at his daughter's and Patricia and started to give instruction.
" Okay, get the corner of that bed. Let's get the sheets down. Get the I.V. bag on the sheet. Okay, on three. One, two, three. Rick, Glenn, you may want to step outside." Hershel said to me and Glenn and we nodded our heads and was about to leave the room till light came from the window and I went over to the window to see that it was a vehicle and when I looked at it closely, it was the truck that both Shane and Otis took. My eyes went wide and I took off out of the room.
" Thank god." I said as I got down the stairs and out the front door as fast as I could, I flew off the steps from the front porch as Shane was grabbing the bag full of medical supplies out of the truck and walking towards me. He looked up at me and he looked like he was bothered by something.
" Is Sam?" Shane asked me as he looked at me.
" There's still a chance." I said with my voice cracking a little bit and happy tears going down my face.
" Otis?" Hershel asked as I turned to see him and his daughters right next to him on the porch.
" No." Shane said as he looked away from them with regret in his eyes again.
" We say nothing to Patricia. Not till after. I need her." Hershel urged us as he grabbed the supplies from Shane and ran back inside the house. I turned back to look at Shane who kept his eyes away from me and back at the ground.
" They kept blocking us at every turn. We had nothing left. We were down to ten rounds. Then he said….he said he'd cover me and that I should keep going. So that's what I did. I just….I kept going. But I…..I looked back and he….I tried. He wanted to make it right." Shane explained as he looked up at me.
I nodded my head to him and I pulled him into a hug. Never in my life have I been so thankful to my best friend for saving Sam's life. About an hour later, we all were waiting in the living room for the good news that I have been waiting for, I noticed that Shane was avoiding everybody and I kinda understood why after everything he went through tonight. Carl sat right beside me, leaning his head on my arm while my head was on top of his head. I kept my eyes on the screen door, hoping for Daryl to come back any minute now. Sam really needs Daryl but knowing Daryl, he wasn't the feeling type of guy. I ran my fingers through my hair as I heard a door open and I looked up to see Hershel smiling at me and I could feel relief filling in my body and I started to breathe again once I realized that I was holding it, " She's going to be just fine now. She's going to be fine now. She's stabilized now." Hershel said as he placed his hand on my shoulder and I nodded my head and I went towards the room where Sam was in. I opened the door and when I looked at Sam. She looked peaceful and didn't look like she was in pain, I walked over to her and sat in the chair and I held her hand and I was finally able to relax and know that Sam was going to be alive.
