A Wild Heart – Part 9:
Éowyn had looked everywhere for her sister before finally finding her in the throne room, sat on the floor just staring at the statue of Boromir. Éowyn watched her sister for a few moments before she finally could see what Faramir had seen.
"Éowara you are a Lady and should not be sat on the floor in that manner," the older sister spoke, startling the youngest from her thoughts. Éowara would not move though and remained looking at the statue.
"Come to chastise me as you have done so many times before, especially as children?" Éowara spoke before getting to her feet and brushing her dress down, "we both know I have never been a Lady in the true sense of the word," she said as Éowyn moved to straighten the golden headband in her sister's hair, "you know what I mean."
Edoras and the Golden Hall of Meduseld – Year 3006
Éowara had snuck off with her cousin Théodred. She was only eight years old but her much older cousin wanted to give her a purpose. He could see that her older siblings had settled down learning what their Uncle wished them to lean but Éowara was still too wild and preferred a more on hands approach to learning… well what learning she was permitted to do.
This had given her cousin the idea to teach her about swords. Théodred knew there was a risk of his father being angry or Éowyn disagreeing with him but, ever since she'd learn how her father had been killed, Éowara's fascination with swords had only grown.
"Now this is a small sword, sharp and real," Théodred told her, "so you have to be very careful with it," he said and the girl nodded before listening to her cousin as he began to teach her everything about using a sword. Théodred would have never admitted it, but his youngest cousin was a good student and absorbed every word he was saying. There was the old mishap but nothing serious… the usual scrapes when one learns sword fighting.
Théodred wasn't bothered as he saw his youngest cousin settled and doing something that she was enjoying. He wondered if it was some connection to her parents that was calming her or whether it was something useful for her homeland. Éowara's keen eyes watched him before the two began to have a pretend fight to test what Éowara had learnt already.
It had been in that moment that the door opened and Éomer and Éowyn had walked in, shocked to see what their sister was doing. Éowyn rushed over to her sister and took the sword from her hand, guiding her away as Éomer spoke to their cousin.
"Leave him alone! He hasn't done anything wrong. He was trying to help me," Éowara had said, pushing Éowyn away from her.
"Éowara you are eight years old and should not be using a sword," Éowyn spoke before dragging her sister away.
Gondor and the Throne Room, Tower of Ecthelion – Year 3019
Éowyn sighed as she looked at her sister in front of her with her arms folded.
"Our cousin was wrong to teach you about those sorts of things at that age," she said, "they were not things that you have been taught."
"You mean things that you wanted to teach me when I was the right age… according to you and Éomer," Éowara said, "you forget that you raised me with our brother and I had to do everything you said, whether it was what was best for me. Our cousin was trying to help me with that… find me a reason to do some good without trying to change me into something that I wasn't… that I'm not even now," she said before looking back at the statue of Boromir, "he should still be here. Uncle should still be here… our parents should still be here."
Éowyn sighed as she watched her sister, her mind flashing back to a time when she'd first realised her sister was far wilder and more lost than she was now.
Edoras and the Golden Hall of Meduseld – Year 3003
Éowyn was sat in the Golden Hall of Meduseld with Éomer, learning from their Uncle. It was a calm day in Edoras and the King had decided to teach his niece and nephew himself instead of their tutor.
The two children, along with their younger sister had been raised in the Court of their Uncle for little over a year since the death of their parents. The older two had settled down rather well and were doing well. Éowara, on the other hand, was up to all sorts of mischief and trouble being around five years old.
The calmness and quiet was shattered as the door to the Golden Hall burst open and Éowara rushed in with mud all over her and laughing as another girl from the settlement followed her, looking just as dirty as her.
"Éowara!" Éowyn called as she was instantly on her feet having put her book down and turned to her Uncle, "I'm sorry Uncle," she said before rushing over to her sister.
"Do you have any idea how you are supposed to behave?" She asked and the younger girl just stood there.
"You aren't my mother. She's gone. They both have and they're never coming back!" Éowara said before rushing off in tears to her room.
It was after lessons and Éowyn had dared to approach her sister's room with their Uncle. She hadn't wanted to go alone, and Théoden felt the need to see his niece.
The two of them had walked into the room to hear Éowara crying softly and holding the doll her mother had given her just before her death. Théoden looked at his older niece before walking over to Éowara's bed and sat down on it with Éowyn moving to stand behind him.
"Oh Éowara," the King spoke as he stroked his niece's arm gently, "everything will be fine in the end. You are going through something that you should not be going through and I do not know how I could make it better for you," he said, trying to place how he could help his niece. She was the more emotional of the three but that was to be expected.
Éowara sniffled as she went silent, hearing what her Uncle was saying to her. It seemed an age of the sun went by before the little girl moved and turned to face her Uncle.
"I didn't mean to shout at my sister… or make the Hall messy or upset anyone," she whispered as she looked at him, "everyone knows what they're meant to be doing except me. No one wanted me. Father told Éomer and I heard him," she said, tears threatening to spill from her eyes again, "who does want me? What should I be doing?"
Théoden pulled his youngest niece into his arms in a rare display of affection, something not even seen in public, and kissed her head softly.
"Your brother and sister, your cousin and I want you, Éowara. You're family, part of the House of Eorl and you have a place in our family," Théoden said as he moved so his older niece could sit down with them. "That is your place and always will be. Your world has changed, and you are not able to see where you belong and that is normal in this situation," he said before looking at Éowyn.
"Uncle is right sister. We all want you and love you a lot. I am not trying to be your mother," Éowyn spoke, "I am trying to help you. I do not like witnessing you in the despair you are in. You are a child and should be enjoying this time. Whether it be in two years or twenty… you will find your role in this world."
Gondor and the Throne Room, Tower of Ecthelion – Year 3019
Éowyn came out of her memories before taking her sister's hand in hers.
"You are starting to find your place in this world, and it was almost twenty years ago our Uncle had you in his arms crying as a five-year-old girl crying," she spoke, "sometimes I still see that girl stood before me and other times I see the woman you have become. My husband is correct… so like me and yet so different at the same time. You had better get ready for dinner. The King is holding a special dinner before we depart for Edoras tomorrow," she said and watched as her sister nodded before departing to her room to prepare for the dinner and knew she would be reunited with her brother soon.
