Winifred Banks woke up one morning exhausted. That was understandable. She was nine months pregnant. Suddenly she felt a sharp pain.
"GEORGE," she called, "I BELIEVE OUR BABY IS ABOUT TO BE BORN TODAY."
She could hear George's footsteps and soon he opened the door.
"Are you hurting dear," he asked her.
"I felt one pain so far," she told him, "But it was different than the pain I felt before. That was just a twinge. This one had me doubled over."
He gently lay her down in the bed.
"I'll ring up the doctor," he said.
He left. He phoned the doctor who instructed him to get a heating pad for her and assured him that he would be over as soon as he could.
George thanked him and quickly brought her the heating pad.
"George," Winifred asked, "What do you think the baby will be?"
"Well I don't know," George said, "But I'm betting on it being human."
Winifred laughed. After a moment her water broke. It was water and blood.
"OH GOD," she screamed as a horrible pain came. He reached for her and held her hand.
"My dear," he said, "Take comfort. The baby will be here any moment."
"I hope you're right," she replied, "This pain is horrible."
She closed her eyes and waited several minutes for the pain to pass. Finally, she was able to speak again."
"George," she said, "If this baby is a girl I would like to name her Jane Ann."
"Indeed? Well, I do love the name Jane Ann. If the baby is a boy would you have any objection to the name Michael Aaren?"
"Of course not," Winifred said, "That's a lovely name."
The head broke through. Winifred groaned as the shoulders came. Just then the doctor approached.
"I'm sorry I was so late," he said, "There was a traffic jam on the road."
He looked to see the baby slide out and rushed forward to catch her.
"What is it," George asked.
"You have a lovely little girl," the doctor said handing her to George, "Now I must attend her mother."
He cleaned Winifred up and stopped her bleeding. Then he cleaned up the baby.
"Have you selected a name for her?" he asked.
"Jane. Jane Ann Banks," Winifred replied.
"A beautiful name for a beautiful baby," the doctor replied.
He left and left the happy family together for the first time.
