Again:

Thank you, Nicolemily2891, for your review. I deeply regret any confusion caused and want to clarify that it was entirely my doing. I am responsible for both accounts. A further explanation will be provided below. I kindly request you to proceed reading this account, as "The Hold" has already been removed from the temporary account. Thank you!

Apologies to everyone! Life got in the way of my writing, and then I got locked out because I couldn't seem to find my log-in information. Anyways! This is my new story. You may have noticed another story called "The Hold" under CrownofChaos. That was me, and it was a temporary account because I was not sure if I would be able to recover my old account. It's been a LONG time since I have written anything. But I was finally able to locate the information to get back into my account today. So I'm slowly moving my stories to this new account. I'll be looking into my other stories as well. I know they need some attention too.

Please give this new story a chance and let me know your thoughts on this new one. Thanks guys! I would love to hear from you.

After another three long and grueling months, marked by an increasing number of deaths and relentless raids, I finally made a breakthrough. It seemed like a glimmer of hope amidst the chaos and despair.

Desperation filled the air as Lieutenant Black approached me, his voice tinged with urgency. "Swan, we're at our wit's end here. We need anything that can give us an edge against these relentless foes. What have you found?"

Taking a deep breath, I responded, "Lieutenant Black, I may have stumbled upon something that could be of use to us. You see, the first animal we brought in and sedated showed a puzzling cause of death - asphyxiation. Further investigation revealed that when these creatures stay above ground for extended periods, their blood oxygen levels decrease significantly."

The lieutenant interrupted, frustration evident in his tone. "Enough with the scientific jargon, Swan. Break it down for me."

I offered a tight smile, understanding his impatience. "Alright, in simpler terms, I've developed a trial serum. If we can successfully inject it into the host, it should accelerate the depletion of oxygen from their bodies, ultimately leading to their demise. However, I must emphasize that the serum hasn't been tested yet. It's merely a strong hypothesis based on my lab results."

Pointing at the vial containing the serum, Lieutenant Black pressed for confirmation. "So, if we shoot that stuff into them, they'll die?"

I tilted my head, a hint of hesitation in my voice. "I can't make any definitive claims at this point. As I mentioned, it hasn't been tested. It's a risky endeavor. We need to locate a vulnerable spot on the creatures and then observe how effective the serum is once it enters their system."

The lieutenant nodded, understanding the uncertainties involved. "Well, it's worth a shot. We're running out of options here. Let's proceed cautiously and hope for the best."

It was a risky experiment, and the weight of our mission hung heavy in the air. It was a small glimmer of hope amidst the darkness, but it was all we had.

"Gaining access through their tough exterior is an absolute nightmare. It's as if their bodies are armored with impenetrable kevlar. However, we are desperate enough to attempt any possible solution at this point. How effective do you reckon our efforts will be?"

"Once again, it's merely a hypothesis that hasn't been put to the test. I've formulated it based on their specific blood type. To confirm its efficacy, we would require a live specimen for experimentation. If you could take this serum to the mechanics, they might be able to devise a weapon capable of injecting the serum into the creature's body. It would have to be a small, razor-sharp projectile, designed to pierce through their resilient exterior. Otherwise, it would all be in vain."

He accepted the small vial from me, inspecting it closely against the light, as if hoping to catch a glimpse of some movement inside. "Well, let me assure you, Dr. Swan, I'll be the first to inform you if we need to produce a large quantity of this substance. As you know, our numbers are dwindling."

"Yes, unfortunately, I am aware of the situation," I replied with a hint of frustration. "I am currently working on a solution to put an end to their attacks, Lieutenant. However, cracking their complex code has proven to be quite challenging."

Lieutenant Black offered me a reassuring smile. "Keep at it, Swan. Focus on what you excel at. I have deployed a significant portion of my force just outside your gates to ensure your safety. You must understand that this research facility is the last functioning one, and you are our only hope. If you are unable to succeed, we are all in deep trouble. And I mean that sincerely. We still rely on the bombs you created, but they provide us with limited time to counter the enemy. It takes a substantial amount of ammunition just to find a weakness in their armor."

I nodded in acknowledgment. "Their armor is incredibly strong. I genuinely appreciate your efforts in stationing troops for my protection, Lieutenant Black. I will continue to give it my all."

"Swan, if our defenses fail out there, everything will be lost. It will mark the end of human colonization," he emphasized.

I let out a pitiful laugh. "No pressure, right?"

"You're damn right it's pressure. For you, and for all of us."

"I just wish I knew what their motives were," I pondered aloud.

"Who knows. They don't engage in negotiations. All they understand is kill or be killed," Lieutenant Black replied, flipping a vial in his hand. "I'll take this to Hawkins and see if he can develop a weapon to counter it. Once it's ready, I'll gladly test it. How much of this substance do we have?"

"I managed to create six tubes. It doesn't require much. So, this initial batch should be sufficient for testing. If Hawkins uses it sparingly, it should last for some time."

"I hope so," he said, turning to leave.

"Wait, Lieutenant," I called out.

"Yes?" he responded, turning back to face me.

I tapped my finger on the examination table, contemplating my question. "Um...why do you think the other creatures are delaying their attacks?

"What?" Black asked, his surprise evident in his voice. "What do you mean by 'other creatures'?"

I lowered my head slightly, feeling the weight of the truth. "I... I saw the video footage. I witnessed what happened on those ships. It wasn't just some small animal, it was something else entirely. Something colossal. It decimated an entire fleet. With that kind of destructive power, why do you think they're hesitating? Especially when there are so few of us left?"

Black let out a tired sigh, rubbing his eyes wearily. "Well, well, well, Swan. You never fail to surprise me. How did you manage to get your hands on that classified footage? You're quite resourceful," he smirked.

"I have my ways," I replied, a hint of a smile playing on my lips.

"Truth be told, Swan, I don't have the luxury of pondering over those creatures. I'm just trying to survive each day. I don't have the time or energy to psychoanalyze them. All I can focus on is finding a way to kill whatever stands in our path and protect my men. Thank God we haven't encountered those larger creatures. Yet."

"Yet?" I inquired, curiosity lacing my voice.

"They've made their presence known, as you're aware. It's only a matter of time before they resurface. Why they're stalling, I can't say. But I'm hopeful that by the time they strike again, we'll have developed a weapon capable of defeating them. That's where my attention lies," he explained.

I nodded in understanding. "You're doing an exceptional job," I offered, genuine admiration in my voice.

He chuckled bitterly. "You know what's worse than facing death out there, Swan? Trying to convince my men that Earth is still worth fighting for. And then watching those same men, who trust and follow me, perish right before my eyes. I fill them with hope as I lead them into battle, only to witness their deaths. Sometimes, late at night, I question if it's all worth it. Do I truly believe in the speeches I give? Should we continue to stand and fight? Is there even a cause anymore? Or are we simply living on borrowed time?"

The weight of his words hung in the air, adding a layer of complexity to our already dire situation.

Placing my hand gently on his shoulder, I spoke with conviction, "As long as we are still breathing, there is always hope. As long as science and determination persist, there is hope for a brighter future. This is what we are all fighting for, what we must constantly remind ourselves of. There will be an end to this nightmarish existence, and we will emerge victorious."

A smirk played on his lips as he remarked, "You sound just like your father, you know that?"

Surprised, I withdrew my hand and gave him a puzzled look. "Who?"

"Your father," he replied, a hint of nostalgia in his voice.

A small smile formed on my face. "Well, we are family after all. It's only natural."

"No, I mean it," he insisted. "He would be proud of you. He always spoke highly of you. On the battlefield, he couldn't stop talking about his remarkable child. He was a good man, a hero who believed in our victory."

My throat tightened as I swallowed the lump that had formed. "We will win. I refuse to let my father down."

He chuckled, his words laced with admiration. "You wouldn't be a true Swan if you didn't have faith. Good day, Dr. Swan." With that, he turned and left me alone in the sterile room, its brightness amplifying the eerie silence.

In that moment, tears welled up in my eyes as memories of my father's smile flooded my mind. The pain in my heart still throbbed, a constant reminder of the loss I had endured. My father had placed his trust in me, and yet, I had been unable to save him. I hadn't invented something in time to halt the monstrous beings that claimed his life.

After wiping away my tears with the cuff of my sleeve, I swallowed my grief and forced myself to refocus on my research. What I was doing would be a testament to his memory. I was determined to bring about a new era, to reclaim our planet from these abominations.

While most people worked tirelessly to save their loved ones, I toiled to redeem mine. This could not be our end.
