Once again, I was jolted awake by the deafening sound of gunfire and explosions. It had become a routine alarm clock for me, a harsh reminder of the chaos that plagued my existence. Glancing at my watch, I groaned inwardly. It was only 7:56 a.m., and I had barely managed to sleep for four restless hours. The constant symphony of violence made it nearly impossible to find solace in slumber. Day and night, the relentless battle raged on, leaving me perpetually on edge. Desperate for respite, I resorted to sleeping pills, hoping they would grant me a few moments of tranquility. But even the drugs failed to keep me in a blissful state of unconsciousness. The weight of my responsibilities, the burden of ensuring the survival of the human race, weighed heavily on my shoulders.

Dragging myself out of bed, I stumbled towards the bathroom, my body aching from the physical and emotional toll of the ongoing war. Standing under the lukewarm water, I allowed it to cascade over my head, attempting to wash away the weariness that clung to me like a second skin. Mentally preparing myself for another grueling day of research, I wondered if today would be the day. Would I finally stumble upon a breakthrough that could save our planet from its impending doom?

As the water gradually turned cold, I reluctantly turned off the shower and wrapped myself in a white robe, feeling the exhaustion seep into my bones. With bleary eyes, I mechanically poured a cup of oats and placed it into the small microwave in my room. Lost in a haze of thoughts, I watched as the cup spun slowly, the bubbles forming and popping, mirroring the tumultuous battle within my mind.

Another day of fighting, another day of sacrifice. Is it all worth it? Doubt crept into my thoughts, threatening to undermine my resolve. But then, a voice, a memory, whispered in my ear. "Yes! It's worth it. Your father never gave up, and neither can you. He left this world with hope, and it's your duty to carry on his legacy. Don't let him down."

The shrill beep of the microwave snapped me back to reality, jolting me out of my contemplation. Allowing the oats to cool, I dressed in my customary attire - black jeans, a white top, black sneakers, and a pristine white lab coat. Taking a moment to assess my appearance in the mirror, I pulled my hair up into a high ponytail, ready to face another day filled with uncertainty and the weight of the world on my shoulders.

I gazed at my reflection in the mirror and cringed at the sight. I looked absolutely terrible, like someone who had been defeated in a fierce battle. The dark circles under my eyes were undeniable proof of my exhaustion and weariness.

But who knows? Today could be the day. The day when I stumble upon something groundbreaking, something that could change everything. The mere thought brought a smile to my face. Positive thinking really did wonders for my mood, especially considering it was still early in the morning and I hadn't even had breakfast yet. I was quite impressed with myself for being so optimistic.

I quickly grabbed my cup of oats and a spoon, intending to enjoy a peaceful breakfast before heading down to the labs. However, my tranquility was abruptly interrupted by a booming voice calling out my name.

"Oh god, not this early, Daren," I muttered under my breath, hastily shoving a spoonful of oatmeal into my mouth.

"Swan!" Daren's voice echoed again, persistently seeking my attention.

"Yes, Daren? I'm right here, not a million miles away," I replied, slightly irritated. Couldn't he have let me finish my breakfast before bombarding me with work-related matters?

Ignoring my less-than-enthusiastic response, Daren hurried over to me with an air of excitement. "You won't believe what I just found out. Remember that serum you created last week? Hawkins weaponized it."

I rolled my eyes, feigning disinterest. "Yeah, I know," I said in a bored tone, repeatedly pressing the elevator button.

Daren's eyes widened, clearly not expecting my lackluster reaction. "Well, did you also know that it actually worked?"

I froze, mid-chew, and turned to face him, my curiosity piqued. "What do you mean it worked?"

Daren's excitement was palpable as he continued, "It worked! They managed to fend off an attack from those creatures, those animal things. And they even captured one for you to study."

"They have a live specimen?" I exclaimed, my eyes widening in astonishment.

"Yes, not just any animal ones, but one of the real creatures, the massive ones you were telling me about. The ones that walk on two legs," Daren explained, gesturing with his hand.

"Go on," I urged, my hand motioning for him to continue.

"Well, the serum killed the smaller animal creatures, but it only stunned the larger ones, just enough for them to capture one. They have to keep injecting it with the serum every hour, but they're bringing it to the lab today."

"Today?" I gasped, my eyes widening even further.

"Yeah, you better get ready because they're rushing it over here," Daren replied, a sense of urgency in his voice.

My heart raced with anticipation as the elevator slowly descended the three floors to the lab center. Oh, my god. Today could be the day that changes everything.

Daren's smile widened as he glanced over at me, a glimmer of excitement in his eyes. "It must be quite exhilarating, finally gaining the upper hand," he remarked. "After all this time, a glimmer of hope. And we owe it all to you, Swan."

I waved off his gratitude, aware that there was still a long and challenging journey ahead. The elevator chimed, signaling our arrival at my floor, and I swiftly made my way to the laboratory, while Daren headed in the opposite direction. As I walked, I couldn't help but agree with Daren's assessment. This truly was the flicker of hope I had been desperately waiting for. The news that survival was not only possible but within our reach.

Upon entering the lab, I was taken aback by the sight of Lieutenant Black waiting for me, a formidable gun clutched tightly in his hand. His body was drenched in sweat, a testament to the intensity of the situation. "Lieutenant Black," I stammered, feeling a mix of surprise and concern.

"Dr. Swan," he managed a strained smile. "I have something for you. Follow me down to the holding cells below. But be warned, we don't want a large audience for this. It's just you."

My curiosity piqued, I eyed him cautiously. "You've captured one of them?"

He nodded, his expression grave. "Yes, we have. But let me tell you, it's vicious and incredibly angry. Remember when you mentioned needing a specimen to test the serum on? Well, I've managed to acquire one. I'm hoping you can extract a blood sample and use it to create more of the serum, something we can administer to these new creatures intravenously."

I shook my head, struggling to comprehend the situation. "How on earth did you manage to capture one of those massive creatures? Weren't we mostly dealing with the smaller ones? How did a genuine alien suddenly appear for capture?"

Lieutenant Black's face hardened, his tone serious. "Swan, now is not the time for questions and curiosity. We have to make use of what we have, and that's the serum. Once we took down one creature, the others scattered like insects."

Insects? I couldn't help but shake my head in disbelief. "There were more than one?"

He nodded grimly. "Yes, the serum proved effective against the four-legged creatures. We were making progress, their numbers dwindling while ours grew. But then, out of nowhere, these other creatures emerged. Thankfully, we were prepared for them, thanks to you. Now, before they have a chance to regroup, we must produce more of the serum. It's our best chance at survival."

"What? No, I can't do that."

"Yes, you are capable. You have observed me countless times. The instructions are documented in my red notebook on the shelf. I need you to start producing more of the serum."

Curiously, he asked, "Where are you going?"

"I...I need...Lieutenant Black needs to discuss something with me."

"Something that requires a syringe?" He raised an eyebrow, eyeing the needle in my hand suspiciously.

"Daren, seriously. It is classified."

He mockingly laughed, "Classified? That's amusing. I am your partner. Can't you confide in me?"

"Daren, I will explain later. Please go. Remember, you work for me, and part of that entails following instructions." He tilted his head, clearly displeased with me keeping secrets. After all, we were partners. He had been there with me, night after night, assisting with the serum. Although his role mostly involved providing light, cleaning my workspace, and fetching me coffee, I valued his wit and companionship.

"Fine," he stormed off.

"I could have allowed him to come," Lieutenant Black whispered once he was certain Daren was far enough away. I could see a hint of disappointment in Daren's expression, as it was evident that I was not allowing him to accompany me. However, I couldn't take the risk. I enjoyed teasing Daren in the laboratory, but the truth was, he was highly intelligent. He was the only other person who could decipher my notes and continue my work if I were unable to. If something were to happen to me, he was my only backup.

I shook my head. "There's no need to endanger anyone else. If this creature is as dangerous as you claim, both of us should not put our lives at risk. He should be capable of continuing my work if anything were to happen to me."

"Good to know," he smiled. "Good decision. I suppose that's why they say you're the one with the brilliant mind." The elevator doors opened, and he gestured for me to enter first.

As the doors closed behind us, the movement of the elevator sent shivers down my spine, accompanied by the creaking sound. My nerves were on edge, and the silence between us only intensified my unease. "So...what is it like?"

"What? The creature?" He replied.

"Yes," I replied calmly. "I just want to mentally prepare myself for what we're about to face."

His words sent a chill down my spine. "Is there any way to prepare for something like this?" He shook his head, a somber expression on his face. "Trust me, there's no amount of preparation that can truly ready you for what we're up against. Picture a towering, scaly beast, standing at least seven feet tall. Its teeth are like razor-sharp steak knives, and its claws can effortlessly slice through a body with a single swipe. But the most terrifying part is its tail. I witnessed it impale three men simultaneously, as if it had a mind of its own, protecting the creature from behind while it fought its enemies. Sneaking up on them is simply impossible."

Curiosity gnawed at me. "But how did you manage to capture such a formidable creature?"

He let out a dry chuckle. "Capturing it wasn't about speed or stealth, Swan. You can't outrun or hide from this beast. The key is ensuring that it's sedated, rendering it harmless."

As the doors creaked open, we ventured into a dimly lit stone hallway, the air heavy with the stench of mold and sewage. I couldn't help but ask, "Is this where the creature is being held?"

He nodded, a hint of pride in his voice. "Yes, this is the lower holding area. It's more akin to a prison than an experimental lab. We've equipped this tunnel with all the necessary firepower to incinerate anything that dares to escape. There's only one way in and out, making it the perfect containment facility. If anything manages to break free, we'll be waiting on the other side."

Realization dawned on me. "I had no idea it was this intense."

He shrugged, a grim smile playing on his lips. "Well, now you know. This is the reality of dealing with such dangerous creatures."

In the dimly lit stone hallway, a deafening roar reverberated, causing me to cringe and instinctively shield my ears from the overwhelming sound. Panic surged through me as I whispered, "Oh my goodness, what on earth is happening?"

Amidst my distress, Lieutenant Black chuckled, shouldering his gun with an air of confidence as he confidently strode down the corridor. The word "mad" hardly seemed to capture the intense fury emanating from the creature. How in the world was I expected to extract a blood sample from such a bloodthirsty and enraged beast? Anxious, I glanced at Black, who continued leading the way.

As we entered the hold, my eyes were drawn to a massive metal cage suspended from the ceiling by a sturdy chain. Within the confines of the cage, a violent and furious creature relentlessly spun around, its tail repeatedly crashing against the bars with a thunderous noise.

"While it was sedated, we secured a metal collar around its neck. Every hour, we administer the serum," Black explained, turning to me with a smile. "Your serum. It's our only means of maintaining control." As the creature roared once more, Black raised his voice, "And it's also the only way we can safely transport it," he shouted over the incessant banging on the metal bars. "We'll administer three doses of the serum to stun it before allowing you to approach and obtain a blood sample." Though his smile was meant to reassure me, I couldn't help but feel consumed by fear. The sight of the creature was unlike anything I had ever encountered, and the last thing I desired was to confront it while it seethed with anger.

Reluctantly, I nodded my head in response. The Lieutenant's words echoed in my mind, urging me not to display any fear. Easier said than done. "It's quite challenging, Lieutenant Black," I replied, my voice tinged with apprehension. "I'm accustomed to spending my days in a laboratory, not on the frontlines of a battlefield."

To my surprise, Black placed a reassuring hand on my shoulder. "Dr. Swan, I promise to keep you safe," he assured me. "I won't allow you near that creature until I've thoroughly tested and confirmed its safe. You're our last hope, and I can't afford to take any risks with you."

Suddenly, an ear-splitting roar pierced the air, causing me to instinctively cover my ears again. The noise was deafening, and I could feel the vibrations reverberating through my body.

"Stay here!" Lieutenant Black shouted above the chaos. He marched towards his men and issued orders to activate the injection button. "Stun the beast! I want it weakened, but not dead. Now!"

As the collar shocked and injected the creature with the serum, it emitted a growl of protest. The massive beast thrashed against the sturdy bars of its enclosure, its tail slipping through the gaps to whip around in a menacing manner. My eyes widened in awe and trepidation. It was truly enormous. Its body, from the neck down, was covered in a glistening armor of silvery scales, while its chest, arms, and legs were adorned with bulging muscles. It was peculiar that the creature wore no clothing, yet it didn't seem completely naked either, as there were no visible signs of genitalia. The thick scales provided ample coverage. Additionally, my gaze couldn't help but be drawn to the long, two-pointed horns protruding from its head armor. It must be a male, I deduced. Surely, it couldn't be a female. Could it?

"Again!" commanded Lieutenant Black, his voice filled with authority. The creature let out a final roar of anger before finally settling down at the bottom of the cage. A pang of pity washed over me as I heard soft growls still emanating from its chest.

Mockingly, I overheard Lieutenant Black mutter, "Who's the weak one now?" He then gave the order, "Alright, bring it down." Slowly, the cage descended, and with a resounding clash, it collided with the cold cement floor.

Even from my vantage point, I could hear the creature's continued angry growls. Its tail slithered into the cage, wrapping around its body, perhaps seeking solace. I observed with a mix of curiosity and fascination, but my attention was abruptly snapped back as Lieutenant Black kicked the creature through the bars.

"You filthy creature. I should sever that damn tail. Once Dr. Swan is done, I'll proudly display it on my wall. It's not like you need it to survive. A fitting souvenir from this war," Lieutenant Black snarled, delivering several more kicks to the defenseless creature. He then ordered a final shock and injection.

Unable to bear witness to such cruelty, I averted my gaze momentarily. Yes, I understood that they posed a threat to us, but there was something profoundly disturbing about inflicting pain on a weakened creature. Killing them, yes, but torturing them was a different matter altogether.

"Swan," Lieutenant Black addressed in a calm tone, attempting to reassure me. "It's alright."

But it wasn't alright. I wasn't accustomed to such brutality, and it made me sick to my stomach. "Swan, we must act swiftly," he replied. I nodded, acknowledging the urgency. The sooner I obtained the sample, the sooner we could bring an end to this war.

I inhaled deeply, summoning the courage to approach the colossal creature that was imprisoned behind sturdy bars. Its labored breathing filled the air, accompanied by a menacing growl that resonated within me. My mouth moistened with anticipation as I carefully observed the magnificent beast before me. Its scales glistened with such brilliance that its entire body seemed to emit a radiant glow. In a peculiar way, it possessed a certain beauty.

Drawing nearer, I cautiously tapped one of its scales, which emitted a metallic resonance akin to the sound of iron. My gaze swept over its formidable form, searching for any vulnerable patches of exposed flesh. Alas, there were none. To reach its delicate skin, I realized I would have to lift one of the scales, an action that would undoubtedly provoke the creature's displeasure. The creature's body emanated intense heat, reminiscent of standing next to a compact furnace.

With a nervous tremor, I bit my lip as my unsteady hand attempted to lift one of the shimmering scales. Instantly, the creature's body tensed, revealing its razor-sharp teeth in a menacing snarl. Did it possess an understanding of my intentions? My heart skipped a beat as its piercing blue eyes snapped open, fixating on me with an unwavering glare. Those vibrant orbs seemed to freeze me in place, daring and challenging me simultaneously.

As the blood drained from my face, I felt a paralyzing sensation take over my body, rendering me unable to breathe or move. In an attempt to regain composure, I took a sharp breath through clenched teeth. I reminded myself not to show fear, as these creatures had a sixth sense for detecting it. However, my efforts were in vain as it emitted a menacing growl directed solely at me, its eyes darting between the syringe in my hand and my own gaze. Its labored breaths quickened, accompanied by a slight movement of its tail. The predatory look it gave me was as terrifying as its physical presence, making me instinctively want to flee.

"Hurry up, Swan. We can't keep it restrained forever," Black urged, breaking my train of thought.

Okay. I can do this, I reassured myself silently.

As soon as my hand made contact with its body, the creature jerked and growled even louder, clearly warning me of the danger. However, I couldn't leave without obtaining the blood sample. I pressed my lips together, determined to proceed. Carefully, I lifted one of its scales, just enough to insert the needle. The creature continued to snarl, its narrowed eyes fixated on me with pure animosity, as I collected its blood. I was well aware that it would kill me if given the chance. Its eyes revealed a deep desire to bathe in my blood. Thankfully, I had the protection of the serum.

Once I finished, I gently placed the silvery scale back onto the thick, tawny layer beneath it. In an unexpected gesture, I softly petted the creature, as if expressing gratitude. I couldn't explain why I felt compelled to soothe the monster, perhaps a misguided attempt at humanity. After all, we were not savages; we were a civilized species. However, I knew that my perspective was likely unique. In this war against these strange creatures, most would argue that showing kindness was a wasted effort.

In the end, the sole purpose of extracting its blood was to uncover the secret to its demise. The creature immediately noticed my attempt to soothe it. Its gaze briefly shifted to my small hand, despite the ongoing glare of hatred directed towards me. Its vibrant blue eyes swiftly scanned my body before locking onto my own.

Initially, I believed that my kind gesture would calm it down. However, it responded with another horrifying growl, its scales rising as if it were uncomfortably hot. I nodded at the monster, offering a forced smile. My instincts urged me to retreat and distance myself from it. Yet, I hesitated to turn my back just yet, sensing it wasn't a wise move.

In response, it opened its mouth, revealing glistening saliva dripping from its razor-sharp teeth. Nope. It was far from soothed. If anything, it appeared infuriated beyond measure. I took a step back, my heart pounding, and raised my hands in surrender. It seemed to derive some amusement from the effect its teeth had on me, as a mischievous glint appeared in its eyes. Its head lifted slightly, sniffing the air. My instincts as a predator kicked in, causing my trembling legs to take cautious steps backward. I realized I had gotten too close, overstepping my boundaries with the creature. It made it abundantly clear that it despised my proximity. It glared angrily at the vial in my hand, snarling as if seeking revenge.

Unexpectedly, it inhaled deeply and let out a thunderous roar directly at me. The deafening sound caused me to stumble backward. In an instant, its lethal tail shot out through the bars, sweeping me off my feet with a single swipe. The spikes on its tail caught my pant leg, tearing it slightly as my back collided with the cold, unforgiving floor.

"Damn it! Shock it now!" Lieutenant Black yelled.

I let out a piercing scream, my voice echoing through the room, as the creature's tail coiled tightly around my leg, yanking me closer to the menacing cage. In my desperate attempt to break free, the vial slipped from my grasp, crashing to the ground with a resounding thud. However, the spikes adorning the creature's tail were not only razor-sharp but also tightly packed together, rendering any attempt to touch them excruciatingly painful.

Agony surged through me as the merciless spikes punctured my flesh, drawing blood and leaving a trail of crimson on the cold, unforgiving floor. Despite the shrill sound of the shock collar reverberating in the air, the creature's grip remained unyielding. Sparks erupted from its scales as Lieutenant Black fired his gun at the creature's tail, but it became evident that its scaled armor provided impenetrable protection. The bullets ricocheting off the tail intensified the pounding of my heart, amplifying my terror.

"Shock it harder! I'll sever that damned tail!" Lieutenant Black's voice boomed with determination, his words laced with a mixture of anger and desperation. My cries of anguish echoed through the room as the spikes on the creature's tail constricted further around my leg, digging deeper into my already wounded flesh. A small whimper escaped my lips as I desperately pleaded for release, attempting to wriggle my leg free, only to be met with intensified pain.

The excruciating torment became almost unbearable as the creature dragged me closer, its intent to kill me emanating from its sinister gaze. Helplessly, I watched as its clawed hands poised menacingly, ready to plunge into my vulnerable chest. In that moment, I resigned myself to my fate, accepting the inevitability of my impending demise. How foolish it seemed to meet such an end.

As the edge of the creature's cage drew near, it raised its body, hovering menacingly over me. My eyes widened in terror, my entire body trembling uncontrollably. Just when I believed it would deliver the final blow, it unexpectedly released its grip, retracting its tail beneath its formidable form. Relief washed over me, but fear still gripped my every fiber.

With eyes filled with trepidation, I hastily used my trembling hands to slide myself backwards, leaving a trail of blood and enduring throbbing pain in my injured leg. A grunt of discomfort escaped my lips as I distanced myself from the creature, moving away like a wounded prey, acutely aware that my life had been narrowly spared.

The creature's next actions sent a shiver down my spine. Amidst the relentless collar shocks, gunfire, and serum injections, I couldn't tear my eyes away as it slyly extended its long, devilish tongue and dragged one of the blood-soaked spikes across the glistening pink surface. A thin trail of crimson marked its path, while its cold, unwavering gaze remained fixed on me.

As the creature consumed my blood, its eyes seemed to widen, dilating like a shark that had just tasted its first drop of blood, craving more with an insatiable hunger. It relished the taste, causing me to hasten my retreat in fear.

After enduring countless shocks and injections, the creature's breathing became labored, and it eventually settled down, its head drooping low and its tail curling around itself.

I clutched the vial containing the blood sample, feeling its warmth seep into the palm of my hand. "Damn it," Lieutenant Black cursed, swiftly wrapping my arm around his neck and lifting me up, all while keeping his gun trained on the creature. "Let's go, Swan." We made our way back as quickly as my injured leg would allow.

"Continue shocking it! Don't stop until we've cleared the door!" Lieutenant Black exclaimed, forcefully pulling me along as we made our way to the stone hall, leaving a trail of blood behind us. "Damn it, Swan. That was way too close. Shit. We need to get you to the medic. Bloody hell. I'm sorry. I shouldn't have allowed you near it so soon."

"It's not your fault. But god, it hurts," I managed to say through gritted teeth. "Those damn spikes!"

"I'll cut off that infernal tail!"

"No, you can't. It's for research."

"This isn't the time to defend it, Swan. Just so you know, that tail will be mounted on my wall when all of this is over."

"Oh, on the wall? Is that a gift for me? Such lovely art, you shouldn't have," I chuckled softly, feeling a bit dazed.

"No, doc. This one's for me."

"Well, I do appreciate pretty art," I slurred.

"Maybe I'll let you admire it. But for now, focus on staying conscious."

The next thing I remember is Lieutenant Black pounding on a large metal door. "Mike! Open up, Mike! It's an emergency!" I must have drifted in and out of consciousness.

After a moment, the door swung open forcefully, revealing Dr. Mike Newton. He was the epitome of a handsome doctor, with his blue eyes and blond hair. His pearly white teeth and charming smile perfectly matched his profession. I smiled lazily at him, but his eyes held a hint of panic as he assessed my condition.

"My god, what happened? Come inside. Come inside," he gestured for us to enter with a wave of his hand. "Lay her down on the table." He swiftly put on a pair of blue surgical gloves, stretching them over his hands.

"Oh, nothing much. Just a little scratch," I laughed weakly.

In a somber tone, Black stated, "She has lost a significant amount of blood. She is not fully coherent."

Confused, I slurred, "What are you talking about? I'm here. I'm fine. I need to take this blood to the lab before..."

Interrupting me, Black explained, "That creature attacked her. It pierced her with its tail spikes. It's quite serious."

"Lie her down completely," Black instructed, taking the vial from my hand and gently placing me on the fragile paper sheet covering the examination bed.

"Be careful... with that..." I mumbled, feeling dizzy as I rested my head back.

"Relax, Swan," Black reassured me.

Mike examined me and questioned, "Why was she even near a creature? She practically spends all her time in the lab."

"We needed a blood sample."

"And you couldn't do it yourself? Aren't you the soldier?"

"Hey-"

"It just seems cowardly to send Swan in when she has no experience dealing with these creatures."

"Hey! Don't you dare question my honor!"

I tried interject as I observed Black grabbing Mike by the collar and pulling him over the table. "Do you want to say that again? Boy?"

Too weak to scold the two men who were acting like children, I could only place my arm on Black's, hoping he would put an end to their petty argument.

After a clearing his throat, Black released him.

Black took a few steps backward, his eyes filled with shame as he turned away from Mike. "I promised to protect her. I messed up. There's no need to rub it in my face. I shouldn't have allowed her near it. I should've taken care of it myself. It might not have been done perfectly, but I would've managed to get her some blood. Even if it meant cutting off its tail."

"I'm not blaming you," I whispered.

"Yes, it is my fault, Swan."

"I need to take off these pants," Mike interjected. "Sorry for interrupting the guilt game, but time is of the essence."

I waved my hand dismissively. "Do what you need to do."

"Can't you just cut the fabric above the wound?" Black suggested. "I have a knife. I can do it."

"The knife could be useful. But I still need to check for other injuries."

"That's where it got her. It's not worth your time elsewhere." I heard the sound of my pants ripping as Black cut away the fabric from my leg, leaving me with a half-pants, half-shorts look. Mike sighed.

"While I appreciate your help and suggestions, I still believe a thorough assessment is necessary," Mike said as he moved closer. "Damn. That wound is really deep. It already looks infected. How long ago did this happen?"

"It just happened," Black replied.

"Did it inject her with something? It looks... very infected."

"I don't know. We still have no idea what these creatures are capable of." It was another opportunity for Mike to start another argument about why I was chosen to collect the blood sample, but he kept his lips sealed.

"Can you fix it?" Black asked.

"Yes, but it shouldn't look this bad so quickly. It seems like it's festering, like something alive."

"Mike, can you help or not? I didn't bring her here for you to treat her like some science experiment. What can we do? We're in a war. As you said, time is of the essence, and we can't afford to lose our top scientist."

Mike took a long pause, adjusting my leg slightly before finally speaking, "I need to disinfect the wound and stitch it up. I'll wrap it with antibiotic gauze. Excuse me," he said hurriedly to Black, as he moved around in a frenzy.

"So, I'll leave her in your care while I take this vial down to Daren. Will you take good care of her?" Black asked.

"Yeah. I'll probably have to sedate her. She won't want to be awake for the stitches or wound cleaning," Mike replied.

"Do whatever is best for her. We can't afford to lose her," Black emphasized.

I could hear the sound of cabinets opening and closing as Black left the room.

"Dr. Swan? I need to give you a sedative and some morphine. I'll operate while you're unconscious. It'll be less painful that way," Mike explained.

I nodded slowly, his voice sounding distant and muffled, as if I were underwater.

"Alright," I agreed.

He raised my leg a little, and I let out a loud yelp as the pain shot through my leg and into my hip. That creature had done a number on me. I had treated it gently, hadn't harmed it. Yet, in an instant, it turned on me.

"Sorry, Dr. Swan. Truly," Mike apologized. I felt the prick of his needle in my arm, his other hand resting on my stomach, as I fought back the urge to wince with every breath. The pain was unbearable. "Almost there," he whispered.

Another wave of pain coursed through my body, as if the creature's spikes were still embedded in my leg, digging deeper. I screamed, feeling a burning sensation travel up my leg, causing my hands to clench into fists.

"Oh god," I grunted. "I can f-feel it. It's moving," I slurred. "It's going up my leg."

"I know. I can see it. It must be some kind of venom. I'll try to drain it out," Mike reassured me.

I wondered if it could hear me. I was certain the entire base could hear my screams.

The last thing I remembered was the echo of its growl in my mind, as I succumbed to the darkness.

I awoke to a sensation of pain, an annoying and stinging kind of pain.

"Hey, she's awake," Mike's cheerful voice echoed in my ear. "Welcome back, Dr. Swan."
Grumbling, I attempted to move my leg slightly, only to realize it was a grave mistake as sharp pains shot through my entire body.

"Hey, hey. Don't try to move just yet. I'll give you some medication to ease the pain."

I managed to crack open my eyes. "Where am I?" I asked weakly.

"You're in good hands," Mike smiled down at me. "Literally. You're in my clinic."

"Clinic?" I shook my head, the pain intensifying behind my eyes. "But I have work to do... I need to make samples."

"Not at the moment, you don't. Listen to me. The wound that creature inflicted on your leg was absolutely horrendous. Do you not remember what happened? You lost a significant amount of blood and you're extremely weak. I had to let the infection drain for a whole hour before I could stitch you up. And trust me, that's not something you see every day."

"Drain? What do you mean by drain?"

"I mean drain. There was this strange pus-like liquid that just kept pouring out. It wasn't a typical wound, if you ask me. Whatever that creature stabbed you with also injected some sort of liquid into the wound. It was like acid. I had to wear protective gear. And if I hadn't drained it, you would be in excruciating pain, or worse, you might not have a leg anymore."

"Yuck. Disgusting," I muttered, finding it disturbing. Was it really that awful?

"Yeah, it was disturbing. As a doctor, I try not to panic, but I'll be honest, what I saw shook me up a bit. Anyway, I drained and disinfected the area, and then stitched you up. You've been unconscious for about eight hours. I suggest you get some rest for the night, and maybe I can arrange a wheelchair for you in the morning. Maybe. It depends on the wound and its effects. I'm still studying it. But don't get your hopes up just yet."

"What do you mean by that?"

"I mean, Swan, it's not a typical wound. I hope it shows signs of healing, but I'm unsure. I don't know what that thing did to you. And if I were you, I wouldn't be in such a hurry to go back to work. Take it easy."

I shook my head in disbelief. "Seriously? You expect me to relax in the midst of a war?" I winced as I sat up, feeling the pain in my body. "Do you not realize that we're still in the middle of a war? I can't waste eight hours just sleeping. Our lives are at stake here. We need a serum urgently."

He raised his hand, trying to calm me down. "Listen, Daren has been making progress with the blood sample. And honestly, you won't be of any use in your current condition, Dr. Swan. You need to rest and let me take care of your leg. Doing anything to irritate it would be a mistake."

I scoffed, frustrated by his lack of understanding. "While I sleep, an entire army of those creatures could attack us at any moment. It's a waste of time to sit here doing nothing. And you expect me to sleep with the weight of humanity on my shoulders? Give me a break, I can't just take a nap while more people die."

He smirked, clearly amused by my defiance. "If you refuse to sleep on your own, I can give you some drugs to help. It'll knock you out." I rolled my eyes, feeling a mix of annoyance and resignation. Without my consent, he inserted a needle into my arm. "This is for the pain," he explained with a smile. "And if you want, I can give you something to help you sleep too."
I narrowed my eyes, irritated by the fact that I had no say in whether or not I could leave.

He appeared to sense my anger, yet he made no effort to alleviate my anxiety. After clearing his throat, he offered a timid smile. "Are you feeling hungry? I've connected an IV to ensure you have sufficient fluids, but if you'd like some food, I can fetch it for you."

"No, I'm alright." I crossed my arms, desperate to escape this place. "Where is Lieutenant Black? I'd like to speak with him. Maybe he can convince you of the importance of my work." No, I wasn't ready to give up just yet.

"Let me rephrase that. You must eat. It's important that you eat. Perhaps something light like oatmeal, mac and cheese, or rice with broth? And Lieutenant Black was the one who approved my suggestion to keep you here. There are guards stationed outside." I bit my lip. Damn. He was my only chance. Maybe Daren needed me? No, Mike said he was doing well and making progress. But then again, what did he know about progress? He was a doctor, not a scientist.
I sighed. I longed to be in the lab, not lying here like a helpless damsel. "I'm not hungry."

"Don't be stubborn. Come on."

"I'm. Not. Hungry." That's when my stomach betrayed me, letting out a loud grumble that couldn't be ignored in the room's silence.

"Then it's settled, soup it is," Mike chuckled lightly before giving me a sincere gaze. "Listen, I understand that this is difficult for you. I really do. But Dr. Swan, if you want to regain access to the lab, it's important to support your body along the way. It needs nourishment and sustenance, as well as rest. Trust me, I want to get you back there as soon as possible. I didn't put in all this hard work on you for nothing. So, show a little gratitude for me and my efforts. I know you may not have an appetite, but will you try? You have to help yourself before you can help others."

I thought to myself, he's right. Despite my reluctance, Mike had invested so much in my recovery, and it seemed only fair to listen to him. Besides, he was an exceptional doctor, and his handsome face made it hard to argue. I nodded and replied, "Alright, I'll have the soup, I suppose."

"Good choice. I'll go get it now. After that, I'll give you something to help you sleep," he said, already halfway out the door. However, I called out his name, causing him to pause. "Yeah?" he responded, as if preparing for another confrontation.

"Thank you," I said sincerely. "Thank you for everything. I know I haven't been the easiest patient, but I appreciate you taking care of me." I hesitated for a moment before adding, "And I apologize for my difficult attitude. Sorry about that."

He smirked. "No worries. I have thick skin too," he pointed at me playfully. "No funny business though. I don't want to come back to an empty bed. And don't think I haven't heard about your reputation as a tricky patient."

I rolled my eyes and replied, "Don't worry, I'll be right here. It's not like I can get up and run away," I sighed.

"Good. I'll be back," he said with a reassuring smile before leaving the room.

After spending two agonizing days confined to the infirmary, I was determined to break free from the clinic and regain my freedom. I was prepared to go to extreme lengths, even resorting to a daring escape from the ICU if necessary.

Recognizing my determination to return to my laboratory, Mike finally relented and brought me a wheelchair. Although he emphasized the importance of resting and not pushing myself too hard, he couldn't deny the remarkable progress my leg had made in healing.

Being confined to a bed for an extended period had left me incredibly restless and anxious. I yearned to witness the progress made with the blood sample I had obtained at great personal sacrifice. I had an insatiable need to work and be productive in my lab. The idea of being a helpless damsel, while Mike catered to my every need, went against my nature. I despised the idea of sitting back and relaxing.

Mike insisted on accompanying me to the research the lab, and I agreed, as long as there were no further delays. As the doors to my lab swung open, he carefully wheeled me inside.

Daren was engrossed in his work, hunched over a microscope, when Mike wheeled me closer. His face lit up with surprise upon seeing me. "Hey! Feeling better?" he exclaimed.

I couldn't help but wonder why everyone was expending so much energy worrying about me. Had they all forgotten that we were in the midst of a war? "As good as I can be," I replied curtly. "So, what progress has been made? What have you accomplished?"

"Well, I'm doing well too, thanks for asking," Daren replied, his tone laced with humor.

I rolled my eyes in frustration. "I apologize for my bluntness. While I was out of commission for two days, the world was descending into chaos, and our very existence was hanging by a thread. So, forgive me if I skip the pleasantries."

Daren raised an eyebrow, clearly taken aback by my sharp tone. Mike chuckled, acknowledging the challenging situation he had been dealing with. "Yeah, see what I've been up against?" he remarked. I frowned at him for his comment, but he smiled back. "I mean, um...it's probably just the medication talking." However, deep down, I knew it wasn't the medication. I craved results and despised the fact that I had been rendered useless for two whole days.

Daren's face twisted into a smirk as he responded, his tone laced with a hint of defiance. "Don't underestimate me, Dr. Swan. I've been working tirelessly in this lab, proving that I can hold my own. I've managed to replicate your serum for the smaller animal creatures by studying your notebook extensively. However, when it comes to this new creature, I've been engrossed in analyzing its blood for hours."

With a sense of excitement, he produced my red notebook, showcasing his meticulous notes. "I've documented my findings, and I must admit, they're quite peculiar. The creature's blood contains microorganisms that exhibit aggressive reactions to intense light and heat. So, I took your serum and enhanced it to target the oxygen in its blood, essentially creating a more potent version. However, my research also suggests that this serum will act like an acid, resulting in the creature's body heating up and burning wherever its blood flows. While I can't guarantee its effectiveness, it will undoubtedly inflict significant harm. We're currently in the process of testing it."

Curiosity piqued, I questioned, "Testing it? How?"

Daren explained, "Lieutenant Black didn't trust the cage to securely contain the creature, so he had it moved to an experimentation cell. In this controlled environment, we can manipulate the temperature to exceed eight hundred degrees and illuminate the space with blinding brightness. Essentially, we aim to blind the creature. However, I understand your frustration. We already know they're sensitive to light, but this experiment takes it a step further."

My frustration seeped into my voice as I responded, "So, blinding them is the solution we've come up with? That's the extent of our problem-solving? Wonderful. I guess we'll just have to wait for a sunny day then, right? Are you serious? Did you not read my notes? We're well aware of their light sensitivity!"

Daren's jaw clenched, his frustration mirroring mine. "Yes, they are sensitive to light, but I also mentioned that I created a sample serum based on the creature's blood. They're currently conducting tests on it as we speak."

I couldn't help but question his absence. "If the tests are underway, why aren't you there to document the results?"

"I thought I could be more productive up here in the lab, especially since I'm the only one here now. It's not like the serums just magically appear, Dr. Swan. Lieutenant Black requested more serum to combat those animal-like creatures because they're running low. So, forgive me for taking the initiative on that," he explained defensively. "I believe I've accomplished much more than you have in the past few days, so a little recognition would be appreciated."

His defensive tone caught me off guard, causing me to blink a few times in surprise. I let out a sigh, realizing that my attitude seemed to be rubbing a lot of people the wrong way today. I knew I was in the wrong, but I couldn't seem to shake off my snappy demeanor. Perhaps it was the medication affecting my mood. After a moment of exchanging glances and an awkward silence, I moistened my lips and apologized to Daren.

"I'm sorry, Daren. I don't know why I said that. I know you've been working hard, and I genuinely appreciate everything you've done. It was a thoughtless remark."

Daren rubbed the back of his neck and let out a defeated sigh. "Yeah, I'm sorry too. I didn't mean to make you feel useless. I'm grateful that you stayed with Mike to recover. And, I haven't had my coffee yet, so I'm sure with that and your medication, we could go at it for hours."

I chuckled at the unexpected innuendo, and even Mike joined in the laughter while Daren's face turned red. "Right, let's just move on."

I smiled back at him, but deep down, I felt a pang of regret for being so tough on him. It had slipped my mind how much we usually shared the workload between us. Being alone in the lab must have been incredibly challenging for him. I finally noticed the scattered coffee cups and the exhaustion evident in his tired eyes.

"Daren, I want you to know how much I appreciate all the hard work you've been putting in. I can't help but feel guilty for not being there to support you. You know me, I hate feeling useless. You've done an amazing job, and I'm truly grateful to have you by my side."

Daren's face lit up with a smile. "Hey, we all have our off days. You should have seen me in here, all alone. I was working like a mad scientist, cranking out serums left and right. I even caught myself cursing at myself because there was no one else around."

I let out a chuckle. "I can only imagine. Thank you for taking charge. So, is the creature now confined in a different type of cell? I assume Lieutenant Black is overseeing its containment?"

Daren nodded. "Yeah, Lieutenant Black is in charge of that."

I had my doubts about that, but I kept them to myself.

After a moment of contemplation, I spoke up again. "I want to see it."

Daren's eyes widened in shock. "What?" he exclaimed.

"Dr. Swan, please," Mike interrupted. "It's too soon. Your injury is still healing, and now you want to go back to where that monster is? As your doctor, I can't recommend or approve of that decision. Besides, you're not in the right state of mind to make such choices."

I responded curtly, "I didn't ask for your recommendation or approval, Mike.

"Bella," Daren said, his voice filled with concern as he used my name to emphasize his point. He shook his head and continued, "I have to agree with Mike. It's just not a good idea. We have no idea how the creature will react again. Besides, I could really use your help in creating more serums. There's still so much work to be done here."

I couldn't help but feel frustrated. "Look, my mind is completely clear. I'm thinking rationally. This is all part of our research. It's my job to observe where the creature is being held and how it responds to the restraints and stimuli. We need someone with a scientific mindset to examine the effects of the test serum and document them. And if you think a minor injury to my leg will stop me from doing my duty, then both of you are mistaken. Now, please, take me down there or I'll go myself."

Daren's voice took on a strained tone as he responded, "Bella, you scared me once before. What if you don't come back this time? Can't you just stay in the lab today?"

I pleaded with him, my eyes filled with determination. "Daren, I need to do this. Please understand."

They exchanged worried glances, and finally, Mike let out a sigh. "I'll take her down. It's probably best if you stay here, Daren. We can't afford to lose both scientists due to stubbornness," he said, giving me a pointed look. But I didn't care. I was determined to see what was happening in that cell.

"Please be cautious," Daren gently placed his hand on my shoulder, concern etched on his face. "I genuinely don't want to witness you getting hurt, especially considering what you've already been through."

I reassured him with a smile. "I'll be careful." Mike nodded at Daren, trying to ease his worries, but it was evident that he remained guarded and discontented with my decision.

"Mike, you better ensure she returns with you," Daren's tone held a hint of threat. "I'm serious. Otherwise, you'll have to face me."

Mike nodded, a smile playing on his lips, as he guided me out of the room and down the corridor towards the experimentation holding cells. The familiar roar of the creature echoed through the halls, but this time, it didn't frighten me as much as it had before. However, Mike appeared shaken, his pace slowing down. "Are you absolutely certain about this?"

"I'm certain," I replied with unwavering determination. "If you'd rather not be anywhere near the creature, I understand. You're a medical doctor, and not obligated to risk your life for the sake of science. I won't judge you."

"No, I can take you there. That's not an issue," Mike's voice remained calm and confident, but his terrified expression betrayed his true emotions.

I smiled back at him. "Thank you, Mike. I truly appreciate you accompanying me."

He smirked. "Well, damn, Swan. You're making me blush."

I chuckled. "Ah, but it's just too easy, Newton," I playfully teased."

As we stepped into the main area, a deafening roar filled the air, causing both of us to fall silent. The creature lay on the cold, hard floor of a cramped cell, its massive frame restrained by a heavy metal collar encircling its neck. Attached to the back of the collar was an ominous injection tube, extending outside the cell and protected by a network of wires designed to administer electric shocks to the creature.

The cell was bathed in an unbearable brightness, even for me, and the intense heat emanating from within was palpable. It dawned on me that the creature's roar was not solely fueled by anger, but also by excruciating pain. With its eyes tightly shut, it emitted a growl of agony and panted pitifully.

Suddenly, the voice of Lieutenant Black pierced through the air. "You like that? You want some more?" he barked, his hand pressing a button that sent a buzzing shock coursing through the collar around the creature's neck. The creature's eyes shot open, and it violently threw its body against the cell walls, almost electrocuting itself in its desperate attempt to break free. Eventually, it succumbed to defeat and collapsed back onto the floor, its breaths catching in its throat. "Yeah! You little bitch. What the fuck can you do now?"

"My god," Mike whispered in disbelief behind me, his mouth hanging open, as he stared at the creature before us. I too was left speechless, unable to comprehend the level of cruelty on display.

"Lieutenant Black!" I called out urgently.

Black's eyes widened as he glanced down at me. "Swan? Is that really you?" he asked, clearly taken aback.

"What do you think you're doing?" I demanded.

"I could ask you the same question. Why are you here? This isn't your jurisdiction. It's mine. And I certainly didn't give you permission to come," he retorted.

"I told you we shouldn't have come," Mike whispered, his voice filled with regret.

"I don't need permission to conduct research!" I shot back at Lieutenant Black.

He casually tucked the remote into his back pocket and descended the metal stairs, his combat boots echoing loudly. Coming to a halt in front of me, he folded his arms and positioned his feet apart, as if attempting to assert his dominance.

However, I refused to be intimidated by him. Anyone who would employ science for the purpose of torture was someone I held in disdain. "What in the world are you doing to it?" I demanded, my voice filled with righteous anger.

He smirked. "You've cleaned up nicely. The last time I saw you, you were drenched in blood. I wasn't sure if Mike could even save your leg," he remarked, giving me a once-over. "You look good, Swan. It's great to see you back on your feet. Or, on wheels."

I gazed up at him, squinting my eyes in suspicion. "What on earth is happening here? This is beyond cruel."

"I'm simply giving it what it deserves. I mean, come on, Swan, just look at what it did to you. Are you seriously going to complain that I'm subjecting it to its own torment?" he snapped.

"As a matter of fact, I am. That's not the purpose of my research. I didn't create something for you to indulge in a twisted game of torture. I developed it to combat these creatures, not to toy with them," I explained firmly.

"Well, forgive me if I seek a little vengeance for all the lives those monsters have taken. I like to think the brave men who sacrificed themselves would be proud to witness its suffering," he countered.

"Don't you dare try to justify your cruelty by invoking their sacrifices. That's not what my research is meant for. If you want to play God, then don't exploit my inventions to do it," I stated.

His face contorted into an expression of irritation as he glared down at me. "I'm the one in charge here, Swan. Not you. Once again, this falls under my jurisdiction. If I want to shock the hell out of that thing, I will."

"Then consider this my resignation," I declared firmly.

"Fine! Daren did the work while you were recovering anyway. It's not like he can't accomplish the same things as you," he retorted.

"Yeah?" I folded my arms defiantly.

"Swan," Mike said in a low tone, attempting to reason with me.

"Then, good luck," I continued, unyielding. "I hope you're confident that he can save the world without my research. Are you willing to put all of humanity at risk for the sake of your sick entertainment? I know you've seen combat, but do you even have any functioning brain cells left?"

He clenched his teeth tightly, his frustration evident. "What on earth is your problem? Are you under the influence of medication?" He glanced over at Mike, and to my complete embarrassment, Mike nodded in agreement. "Do you seriously want to argue for the rights of this...this...creature? Are you now some kind of humanities lawyer?"

"My mind is completely clear! This mistreatment stops right now, or I will put an end to it. The choice is yours, Lieutenant Black." He pursed his lips and stormed away, pacing back and forth across the room. After a moment, I let out a sigh. "Well?"

"What the hell do you want me to say? You're not really giving me any options."

"Torture is unnecessary. Restraints, yes. But in the pursuit of science, we must maintain our humanity. If it comes to the creature's death, so be it. But I refuse to sit here and watch you play God with my work."

Finally, he looked at me with a resigned understanding. "Fine. You're the scientist. So, I suppose you're in charge of this matter. I guess my enjoyment is over."

"There will be plenty of enjoyment once this war is over, Lieutenant Black. Don't forget what we are fighting for."

He scoffed. "Yeah. If it ever ends, that is." I chose to ignore his comment. I couldn't allow that kind of negative thinking to affect me. "It's already stunned. But with your permission, I'll give it a few more moments just to be absolutely sure."

"No. It's fine."

He fixed me with a piercing glare, his eyes filled with frustration. "Why are you even down here?" he demanded. "What do you think you'll achieve? If there was any research to be done, I should have been informed beforehand. Instead, you just show up out of the blue, catching me off guard. What exactly are you trying to accomplish?"

I stood my ground, determined to make my point. "I simply want to see the type of cell the creature is being kept in," I explained. "Daren mentioned it's in an experimental enclosure, and as someone studying it and searching for a way to eliminate it, I believe it's crucial for me to understand what it's being subjected to. Is that acceptable to you, Black? Are you alright with me doing my job? Surely you understand the importance of documenting everything."

He scoffed dismissively, his disbelief evident. "Oh, I see. Are you planning to let it take another victim in the name of science?" he retorted sarcastically. "Let me enlighten you with a little secret. That creature will devour you before you can even blink. It'll pluck you right out of its teeth within seconds. If you want to study it, do it from the safety of the surveillance cameras. There's absolutely no need for you to be down here risking your life."

Feeling a surge of frustration myself, I couldn't help but challenge him. "If you're so concerned, why don't you be prepared to play God once again if it tries anything?"

His eyes narrowed, his tone turning stern. "Are you deliberately disobeying a direct order?" he questioned, his voice laced with authority.

I shook my head, determined to stand my ground. "No, I'm not. And I didn't hear any order. I heard your advice, which I appreciate, but I still believe it's essential for me to carry out my work."

With a triumphant smirk, he pulled out a remote control and waved it in the air. "Fine," he conceded. "I'll watch over everything from up top. But don't be surprised if you end up in the medical ward again," he warned, his words dripping with a mix of annoyance and concern, before striding away.

Mike cleared his throat, expressing his concern. "Swan, I must say, this situation seems quite insane. You're really putting yourself in harm's way. I do agree that Black crossed a line, but I strongly advise against you getting close to that thing. And Daren feels the same way. You know he usually supports and stands by you in everything."

Understanding their concerns, I responded, "I understand what all of you think. However, as a scientist, my duty is above all else. This is a matter of utmost importance. If there was another feasible approach, I would certainly take it. But if I don't make an effort to save as many lives as I can, then what is the purpose of all my hard work?"

Mike let out a sigh, acknowledging the weight of the decision. "As you said, I'm a doctor, and you're the scientist. It's a difficult decision, but ultimately, it's yours to make."

I agreed, recognizing the gravity of the situation. "That's precisely why you should stay here. I'll continue the journey alone."

Surprised by my suggestion, Mike shook his head. "Wait, no. Are you kidding me? Daren would be furious with me." Mike's fear of Daren seemed unusual. "If anything were to happen to you, and I returned alone, he would hold me responsible."

"Mike, I need you to remain behind. Unfortunately, there are simply not enough humans left to waste a skilled medical doctor like yourself. We need you. Others need you. I, on the other hand, am a scientist. This is my duty. So, please, let me fulfill it."

Reluctantly, Mike gave in to my request. "We need you too, Swan," he said with a hint of resignation. I smiled reassuringly at him, trying to alleviate any concerns he had.

"Let me handle this alone, Mike," I insisted, hoping to ease his burden.

"Fine. But I want you to know that I'm not leaving," he added firmly. I was about to voice my disagreement, but he silenced me with a stern look. "I'm. Not. Leaving. Don't even try to change my mind. I'll stay right here by your side."

"Fine," I replied with a half-smirk, realizing that arguing further would be futile.

With caution, Mike observed as I propelled myself towards the brightly lit and heated cell. Lieutenant Black, positioned high above the lower ground in his office, peered down at me through a large glass window. It appeared to be made of some sort of safety glass, presumably designed to protect him in the event that the creature escaped.

The creature emitted a low groan, its back heaving up and down rhythmically. Despite its discomfort, its deep blue eyes remained wide open, fixated on me as I cautiously approached. When I finally came to a stop in front of the cell, the creature's gaze shifted curiously towards my wheelchair. It then shifted its attention to my wrapped leg, studying it intently. After a moment, its eyes returned to mine, a subtle hint of satisfaction playing on its lips.

"I didn't come to give you my other leg, if that's what you're wondering," I said in a hushed tone. The creature tilted its head to the side, seemingly puzzled by my words. Perhaps our language sounded foreign to its ears. I started to doubt if it could understand me at all.

"I don't know if you can comprehend what I'm saying," I began, noticing a darkening in the creature's eyes as its body slightly lifted, its claws scraping against the floor. "But I'm the only one willing to save you from being shocked, even though you caused harm to my leg. So, you better cooperate with me. And you better behave, or else you'll experience immense pain."

The creature ran its long tongue across its sharp teeth, examining me with great scrutiny. I pointed my finger at the shock collar, emphasizing the consequences it would face if it failed to understand my warning.

Its eyes narrowed as it shifted its stance, puffing out its muscled chest and glaring down at me. The sight was intimidating, especially from the confines of my wheelchair. I had to tilt my head back to meet its penetrating, glowing blue orbs. It regarded me as if I were a delectable meal, ready to sink its teeth into, but I refused to be intimidated. I refused to let this creature overpower me.

"You are a male," I murmured. Only a man would exhibit such behavior. If it was even possible, his eyes narrowed further. I maintained eye contact with a determined expression, engaging in a silent challenge that I refused to retreat from. Evidently, he did the same. He emitted a low growl, causing my heart to race and my body to tremble. However, I remained steadfast.

"Swan?" Mike cautioned from the sidelines, "I wouldn't provoke it."

The creature's gaze shifted to Mike. He tilted his head once more, scanning Mike from head to toe with a look of disdain. It quickly concluded that Mike posed little threat. I continued to hold my unwavering gaze on the creature. Perhaps it disliked my mention of pain. Maybe it understood the meaning behind that word? "I don't know what consequences await if you persist in your unruly behavior. However, if you comply, the pain should be minimal."

The creature carefully observed me, his tail swaying slowly behind its body. Emitting a small growl, he lowered himself and settled on the floor, wrapping his tail around his face to shield him from the harsh light. The brightness seemed to cause him discomfort. Perhaps a small act of kindness could initiate a connection between us, I pondered.

"Could you please dim the lights?" I requested, gazing up at Black.

"You've got to be kidding me!" Black's voice resounded from his office upstairs.

"Just a little," I retorted.

With a sigh, he nonchalantly gestured, and the lights dimmed slightly. As a result, the creature's scales lifted, and it sat up a bit more. Our eyes met again, and I offered a faint smile. His tail flicked back and forth on the floor, seemingly content with the subtle change in lighting. It was a small step forward. Tapping the floor twice with a sharp claw, he appeared grateful and more at ease, yet its blue eyes still harbored a hint of distrust. Instead of outright hating me, it seemed to be tolerating my presence. I supposed it was a promising beginning.

Raising an eyebrow, I remarked, "Despite the past, we can maintain civility. You and I. Humans and... well... your kind."

He glared at me with a scowl on his face.

"I dimmed the lights for you. I'm taking the first step," I said. His frown deepened as he raised his head proudly. Then, with a single nod, he seemed to acknowledge something.

A surge of excitement rushed through me. Were we finally connecting? Did he truly understand me? "So, we can find peace," I suggested.

His jaw tightened as he let out a disdainful snort. I gasped as he suddenly leaped up and scurried into a corner of the cell, curling up into a protective ball. Impressive. Despite enduring relentless shocks, he still possessed an abundance of energy. It was evident that he had hidden strength, perhaps even more than he let on. Black should be wary.

"Alright, you've seen it. Now, step away, Swan," Black's voice echoed through the intercom. Without hesitation, Mike rushed forward to grab the handles of my wheelchair and move me back. The creature's eyes peeked out from under its protective cocoon, but instead of looking at me, they fixated on Mike. Then, they shifted upwards to Black. It seemed to view males as a threat. This further supported my belief that the creature was indeed male.

When Mike caught a glimpse of the creature, he shuddered involuntarily. "Man, that thing is creepy. The sooner we eliminate it, the better. Come on, let's get you out of here."

I refrained from responding to Mike's comment because deep down, I felt a strong desire to delve deeper into studying it. The creature held a captivating allure for me. In just a few fleeting moments, it managed to convey a message without uttering a single word, leaving me yearning for more knowledge. What language did it possess, if any? Why had they chosen to visit our planet? What wonders lay on their own celestial home? Did they reproduce asexually or did they possess two distinct genders? While I couldn't scientifically ascertain the creature's gender, both I and others presumed it to be male. Its behavior exuded a dominance that seemed more fitting for a male. Henceforth, I made the decision to use masculine pronouns in my documentation.

I wondered what thoughts crossed his mind as he gazed at me? I felt an urgent need to establish a means of communication with him. I had to see him again. The scientist within me refused to be silenced.
