I felt anxious until the next day dawned. The Sakura TV news started at five in the afternoon, so I had to go through the miserable and torturous process of waiting. Every hour and every minute seemed like an endless Calvary. I couldn't concentrate on what L was saying during the study of the notebooks. My eyes were fixed on the clock.
Of course, as the hours passed, I began to doubt my decision. Is it really the right thing or just the easiest? Maybe it's just risky. What if Light or Higuchi kills me? In fact, the video may have seemed staged or fake to the journalists. Behind the door, the voices were faintly heard, since in almost the entire building of our secret base, there's sound insulation. I worried because of that, but luckily no one noticed.
Finally, all those hours passed and the moment of truth came at last. I snuck out of the secret base an hour before the news started, and by taking the bus arrived at the studio in the blink of an eye. All of my courage was gathered and felt ready to convince the producers to show the video. But when I arrived in front of the entrance, my heart tightened.
Is it the right thing though?I wondered.
Suddenly my cell phone rang. It was Matsuda.
"Hello?"
"Where are you, Marina?"
"Am at a kiosk in the neighbouring area."
"And what are you doing in there?"
"Nothing special, really. Just wanted to finish some stuff. I'll be right back."
"Just be careful not to get yourself in trouble!"
"I'm fourteen years old, not four. I know what am supposed to do. Trust me." We hung up the phone line.
I quickened my pace and entered the building. Fortunately, I could remember where the room was since the tape incident. Plus there was plenty of time for them to edit the video sound on the computer,-if they accepted my request.-
On my way to the newsroom, a woman who seemed to be in a hurry accidentally bumped into me.
"Oh, am so sorry, ma'am! Did you hurt yourself?" I worried and lifted her by the arm.
"Yes, yes don't worry miss. I should be the one to apologize. I didn't notice you coming because of my hurry, you know... I'm so sorry!"
Wow... Japanese people are so kind! I thought and jokingly answered: "Really, it's not that important. My trousers just got a little dirty. It's not like you sent me to the hospital!"
"Anyhow... Forget about it."
The woman stood up and flicked the dust off her clothes. She looked surprised, although I couldn't tell if she wondered what a child wanted in a channel studio, or what a foreigner and even a minor wanted in Japan.
"You are not Japanese,"
"No, and I don't live in your country."
"And what brings you to the Sakura TV studio?"
"Well…" I giggled, "I expect you to think am insane for what am about to tell, but I assure you my purpose is sacred. Everything I'll say is documented. Also, you don't have to be so formal with me, as am a minor."
"Tell me, young lady. Journalists like the unbelievable yet true things!"
I told her about the fake story, how I ended up working with the police, and how I had a video saved on my cell phone which proved one hundred per cent that this teenager was the real Kira. Her eyes sparkled as soon as she heard about this particular detail.
"Fascinating... But why didn't you take the video earlier so the case could end faster?"
"Because I wasn't given the chance. The video had to be taken a moment where was only Kira and I."
"Now, do your partners know you're here?"
"No, because they see me as a baby rather than a fourteen-year-old. Maybe my age bothers them. Like, if someone ten or twenty years older than me did it, they'd get the thumbs up."
"You mean because of your age they think you can't do much."
"Kind of. Yes."
Without wasting any more time, we arrived at the newsroom. After the hostess greeted them and greeted back, one of the staff looked at me as if he saw a ghost. —I thought they must have forgotten about me after the tape incident.—
"Ah!" he shouted.
"What's wrong?" another staff member asked him.
"Stay away! Don't come any closer!"
"Why? Do I have leprosy or something?"
Naturally, they ignored the fact I was fooling around and went straight to the heart of the matter. "What do you want again?" the director asked.
"We didn't do anything! We swear! Don't call the police!" another begged me.
"I'm not going to call the police, guys... I'm not from the FBI."
"You could be!"
"Well! Before jumping to conclusions, listen. I do know who the real Kira is and there's proof! A video on my cell phone proves it all! Oh, shoot! I just asked you to believe a child. Impossible, isn't it?"
Their astonished look was replaced with a sullen one.
"Are you telling the truth?" the director asked.
"If I was lying, I wouldn't be here. I'm an honest person, unlike you! You should be ashamed of yourself for lying in public! I'm not sure if you're aware of it, but the people who watch you on a daily basis, are gullible and easily influenced! If it was possible, I could tape your mouth shut so you'll never speak again and thus never lie again! But God forbid I'm against violence!"
"Kumiko, what is she talking about?" one of the staff asked the hostess.
"How old is she to talk to elders like that?"
"She's fourteen. Let her show the video because we're out in five minutes."
"Fourteen?!" they all said together at once.
"And knows who the real Kira is?"
"But she's only a kid! What does a child know of such things? I wonder how her parents would even let her do so. I was still playing with Barbie dolls at her age!"
Who even plays with Barbie dolls these days?I thought.
"As I said before, we're out in five minutes, so comment whatever you want about her later! This country, everyone, won't move forward if we stay oldschooled. These are perceptions of our parents and grandparents! Now take the video and edit it right away!" Kumiko shouted.
It was obvious they weren't that interested, but did as told in the end. I took out my cell phone and placed it next to the computers so that they could transfer the data. They also put a microphone in for me to speak, while going live. Obviously, I wouldn't appear on screen for security reasons, and my voice would be pitched high through editing.
I even wondered how L would react to seeing me do something like that. Maybe he wouldn't understand right away, but thinking about the lie I told them earlier, and suddenly a high-pitched voice appearing on TV, maybe would help him connect the dots. The only ally he had regarding his suspicions about Light, was me after all. I truly believed in him...
If he found out I showed a video of the real Kira and let it be public to the whole of Japan... How would he feel? Maybe he would be grateful. Or might feel nothing at all, as he's so cold. Or at least he seems to be so.
When Kumiko appeared on the set, she started with exciting news, as described it to the audience while we were getting ready for our own turn. When the time finally came, I stood in front of the microphone while the screen went white and a capital O appeared to avoid suspicion. Just as Kira appeared then. My heart pounded just thinking that the whole country would see the video. I would even get in trouble with Kira!
"Hello, people of Japan. I'm O. By now you all know Kira, the assassin who kills criminals in an inexplicable way. Recently there have been people who claim to be the real Kira, but they are liars and all they want is to turn the spotlight on them. There is indeed the very real Kira out there! The one who started all this mess is still hiding in the dark. But, he's been anonymous enough, so it's time for the truth to shine, ladies and gentlemen. A video proves it all, which I filmed secretly. I assure you it is one hundred per cent true. See for yourself!"
The video began to play, while intense sweat rolled down my spine. I couldn't wait to see Yagami's face when he found out his identity was revealed!
"Rem, I sense that sooner or later I'll be discovered. At this point, I'll instantly be sent behind prison bars. I gotta save myself!"
"Tell Ryuk to do that for you..."
"I don't think he's interested much, instead of eating apples and being lazy. You know how he is."
"Looks like I have no choice... Well, listen carefully. Think what someone like you would do. A person who wants to imitate you."
"Hmm... The first thought that would cross their mind would be to get rid all of their obstacles one by one. From the police to members of the FBI. But then they'd think this would only increase the suspicions towards this person, especially if they had an opponent like L. So, the best thing would be to kill their family first, so people never know this person is responsible for everything, and then prepare the corresponding plan of action!"
"You mean your father, your mother and your sister Sayu. You'd really like to see their names written, wouldn't you?"
"And not to mention anyone else's! Imagine it! A world without my family ever knowing how their own child made it! I would hardly ever tell them, especially my father. He wouldn't appreciate my effort! But I don't need his approval! Governments are already approving my work! Haahahahaha!!"
The video ended with Light squealing and laughing hysterically. I turned the microphone back on.
"As you can see... Only one person is the true Kira. Light Yagami. Yes! That innocent face you just saw is Japan's infamous killer! The girl you saw next to him is his partner, but she's not human. She's a Shinigami, and these creatures have one thing in common: The death note. A notebook quite different from the other ones. If you write someone's name, they die instantly of a heart attack. Believe it or not, this notebook exists! Yes! Light Yagami is Kira! And death note is his ally! He's the one who has "eaten" the hearts of criminals!"
I turned off the microphone, took my cell phone and started running to leave the studio. I don't know what's got into me to start running. But inside, I felt that the sense of justice was more intense than any other time...
