The Modified Wheelchair.
"Wow... wow... WOW..." Kana couldn't help but repeat over and over as she moved on land at the same speed as a walking human. The craftmen of her home had created a chair with wheels, using a design that Naruto had given to them.
The average speed of a merperson on dry land was about 1/5th the speed of a human.
The chair was allowing her to easily move the same speed as a walking human, and she could go faster if she really wanted to she would be. The chair itself was a cloth that was attached to hard wooden structures that had wheels attached to the other side. Her tail stuck out the back while her upper body stuck straight up. The wheels moved rather smoothly across the ground, and Kana had the power to use her hands on the wheels to control which way she was going.
Her weight and tail on the ground behind her kept her stable, and there was a smaller copy of the wheelchair, much smaller, near the middle of her tail. She used the back half of her tail to move forward.
"The wheels are attached to the wood using metal, and after making some cornstarch, I was able to boil it in water to make lube." Naruto reached down and showed the to Kana how the wheel was connected to the chair she was sitting in, and he scooped off a tiny amount of lube. He rubbed it against the palm of her hand so that she could feel just how slick it was.
Very basic highschool chemistry work went a lot way in a world around 1000 years behind in technology.
Whenever his dick was tired from screwing Kana, he would go and talk to the craftmen of the village and tell them how to make certain things that would benefit the village. Wheelchairs had been among the highest priorities to the merpeople after learning about them.
Kana was shocked moments later.
"Is... is that glass... is that glass..." Kana pointed to what a few mermen were carrying through the village, and it was a very large panel of glass.
Only the largest of the human kingdoms knew the secrets of making glass, and they refused to share those secrets with anyone. She looked at Naruto, who nodded his head, showing her that he had told the craftmen how to make glass. She looked back and saw another large panel of glass being carried behind the first one.
"There is a ton of high quality glass making materials near the caves and beaches. Those will be used to build greenhouses and bath houses. That way everyone can take warm baths, and the greenhouses will let us grow herbs for flavor... right now you only have salt to flavor dishes... but with greenhouses, we can make food taste even better." Naruto stated with pride in himself. At the moment ALL of the food in the village was very basically flavor with salt, and it was all fish based. What wasn't flavored with salt, was flavored by being smoked instead. That was better, but he wanted to introduce the village to flavors outside of smoke and salt.
Hard working people deserved the chance to eat great food.
"Greenhouse?"
"Think of it like a house that stays pretty warm all year long, so you can grow certain crops inside of it that would normally not grow in winter. There are other uses for glass... like tinting it to make sunglasses." Naruto stated as he pointed towards the Redcaps walking around the village without much trouble, during the middle of the day no less. They weren't even using their canes to walk with and feel their way.
They were all wearing... very ugly sunglasses made with a very dark glass. Naruto wasn't a fashion designer, so he just made a very practical version of sunglasses that would block out as much light for the redcaps as possible. Since there were only a handful of redcaps to make them for, it didn't actually take the craftmen too long to make them once Naruto told them how to do it.
He was not a craftmen, he could do it if he NEEDED to, but he couldn't do the job as well as those who had years of experience working with wood and metal.
"Glass, Wheelchairs, and Sunglasses. When we get back from visiting the goblins, then I can help out more... but right now these were the only things I could teach the craftmen how to make. I gave them blueprints for a bath house and greenhouse... it shouldn't be finished until awhile after we get back though." Naruto didn't expect the greenhouse to be finished for at least 2 months, not with the size of it and the inexperience it. Also the fact the mermen couldn't climb to make it, so it would have to be the redcaps who physically put the greenhouse together, and they weren't experienced.
The bathhouse would be easier.
It was just a very shallow indoor pool with insulated walls, and triple pan windows for the ceiling to allow the sun to heat up the inside of the room. The sun itself would keep the water warm during the day, and nobody would use the bath at night if they wanted it to be warm. 3 of the 4 walls to the bathhouse would also have fireplaces built in to keep the inside of the room even warmer on very cold days.
Mermaids were very cold resistant.
Other species that Naruto wanted to include might not be, so it would be a nice way to make everyone feel welcome.
"What other inventions?"
"Well, I would have to think about it. When we get back, I'll look at what problems and complaints people have, and see how knowledge from my world can help." Naruto didn't have 10,000 plans for improvements. He also didn't have unlimited knowledge either. The best way that he could see to help people would be to go around and see how people needed help, or how he could make their lives just a little bit easier.
It helped that he wanted a little more variety in the taste of the food he was currently eating, which inspired him to take his knowledge of gardening and apply it to a greenhouse. He just wanted herbs and spices that could be used to make the food taste a little better.
"What about those... tanks that let people breath underwater longer?"
"We need more manpower to make those. It will have to wait until we get back." Naruto told her, and there it was. Humans from a nearby settlement had brought the merperson village a horse-drawn carraige. It was a request from Naruto to his new father-in-law, that would make the trip to the goblin clan nearby much easier on everyone involved.
"It is only a week away, do we really need the carraige?" Kana questioned his need for it.
"We're bringing the goblins a gift of food to show we don't mean them harm. We can't just carry that with us for a week. Salted and preserved meat can last the trip no problem, but what we can carry on our arms and backs is very limited." Naruto wanted to start off any relations as nicely as possible. He could see the smoke in the distance that showed exactly where the goblin settlement was, and it was about a day away if they used horses to pull a carraige. "From what Reki told us, are about the size of human children in height..." Naruto stated as he measured about where that was.
"Why does that matter?"
"Because, I'm human, and while you can change your height to see eye to eye with them..." Naruto stated as she got out of her wheelchair, and stood up heigher on her tail to be as tall as him, only to change that to be less than half of his height. "... I'm 180cm tall, I'm tall even by the standards of my world. Not the tallest, but pretty tall. Humans are considered hostile to them no doubt... and I'm guessing goblins stand around... 100 to 130 cm tall..." Naruto placed his hand at his belly button.
At the tallest, he could see a goblin being as tall as his belly button, meaning that unless he took a knee at all times, he would always be looking down on them. He needed a very, VERY, good gift to give them so that they wouldn't feel intimidated by him. A gift of food was one of the best ways to get on the good graces of somebody, and help ease any possible tension.
"Why not just conquer them?"
"Because, I don't want to conquer them. I want them to join us willingly, and I want them to want to join us. Forcing people to join you only leads to them betraying you in the future." Naruto could see how Kana could assume it would be easier to go on a conquest.
History showed that worked.
It only worked if you didn't also enslave the people you conquered, and if the people you conquered had better lives among your people after being conquered. While he could fulfil that condition, 200 years in the future there was no promise that the people of the future would still treat goblins with respect. Naruto wanted to make a long-lasting relationship where both sides saw value in working with the other side.
That would not work if one side saw themselves as the victims, and the other side saw themselves as the oppressors.
"Anyway, you should go say goodbye to your father and tell him we're leaving once the carraige is stocked up." Naruto watched her getting back into her wheelchair. Naruto walked up to the horses that would be drawing the carraige, and he saw the humans who had brought them to the village.
He nodded to them.
He didn't need to say any words of thanks, his nod was enough. He also didn't want to answer any questions on what the horses would be used to carry, and why the village that didn't really trade with anyone needed the carraige in the first place. Naruto looked out in the distance once more and saw the smoke in the distance.
'In all honesty, I could most likely run over there in a day... but for a mermaid that would be a week's trip to get there. Judging by how much smoke I'm seeing, I'm guessing they have at least 5 campfires burning right now... so maybe they have 20 or 30...' Naruto was judging purely on how much smoke he could see. He would guess they were smart enough to cook their meat, and if they lived in the forest they would no doubt have pretty primitive clothes, so having multiple fires going would keep them warm.
It would be wasteful to make that much fire for anything less than 20 people, but it was harder to judge with how little he knew of their culture overall.
Naruto blinked.
'That... is an oddly shaped bird...' Naruto rubbed his eyes and narrowed them as he looked at a strangely humanoid looking bird flying in the distance. It was just far enough away that he couldn't see super clear details.
Harpy.
Humanoid bird?
Naruto was looking at a harpy in the distance, and it took him a moment to realize that he was seeing a living and breathing flying humanoid.
That was kind of cool.
