It wasn't long before Faith and Gunn were beginning to report, no vampires found on their patrols. For awhile things seemed very calm. The Altimah Project hired a few more employees and began producing shield emitters and pulse pistols for the expedition. Alexander also recruited a number of people for the expedition and Oz and Johnathan finished their satellite and put it into orbit. The first place they scanned was L. A., where they got a shock.
"Los Angeles has three tears." Alexander reported to the group and the SGC at the same time. "Worse, one of them was created on purpose, from this side. Just like the one in Sunnydale and it's just as big."
"Where is it located?" Giles asked.
"Under a building owned by a law firm called Wolfram and Hart."
"Oh dear." Giles said and began cleaning his glasses.
"Oh dear, what, Giles?" Alexander demanded to know.
"Wolfram and Hart are known to my former employers."
"Former employers?" Jack asked.
"In addition to working for the British Museum, I also worked for an organization that collected information about the creatures we call demons. Wolfram and Hart are the kind of lawyers that give lawyers a bad name. They represent the worst scum on purpose. Their 'Senior Partners' are actually three demons, known as the Wolf, the Ram and the Hart, to their employees. Employees, it is believed, that sell their souls in return for the rewards they offer them. They're also believed to help violent demons find ways to hide in society, making it easier for them to feed on humans."
"They willing work with demons?" Jack asked, astonished.
"They may actually worship them in some cases."
"It's not that surprising, some people wanted to worship the Wraith. Power always attracts people." Corda said.
"These demons they call the Senior Partners, do you know anything about them?" Carter asked.
"They don't reside in this dimension, that much is known. This tear under the building, may lead to the dimension where they do reside."
"Then it needs to be closed, fast. Along with the tears." Jack decided. "I'll call Hammond, he can talk to the President, there has to be a way we can do it. We also need to track down the demons they've helped hide."
"We could have them declared suspected domestic terrorists and supporters of terrorists. It would get us into the building and their clients list. Once in the building, you can close the tear, that would cut off the influence these Senior Partners have wouldn't it?" Daniel asked.
"It would. Their support systems would collapse. The humans might be able to challenge the charges in a court of law, but by then, the demons they helped hide would also be eliminated and without the kind of influence the Senior Partners can bring to bear, very difficult for the humans to do." Giles agreed. "But we would need to move fast, who knows how many agencies they have their own spies in. They're a successful law firm, who deal in dirty, usually unprovable tricks, to get their clients off."
"Right, I'm calling Hammond now. We need to arrange an op immediately." Jack headed for his office. After briefing Hammond, who briefed the President, he finally emerged from his office.
"The President's agreed. He'll work it with the FBI, but we need to move now. Alexander, take the Altimah and go retrieve the energy. I'll brief the SG teams. Let's shut these people down."
Since the world they'd hidden the energy on wasn't far, it didn't take Alexander long to return. Once he did so, he and the SG teams, led by Colonel Reynolds of SG 3, boarded a military transport and headed for L.A.
"You know if Giles' information proves wrong, this could bite us in the ass." Daniel told Jack, as the teams headed out.
"I don't think he's wrong. That tear is too coincidental, besides Hammond says the FBI has tried investigating them a number of times and something always derails the investigation. Giles may be right that they have spies in other organizations, including the FBI."
"Then I hope we find them too."
The SG blitz attacked the L.A. branch of Wolfram and Hart and swept through the building. One of the lawyers stepped forward. "I'm Holland Manners, what is the meaning of this unprovoked attack?"
Alexander began scanning. "I'm reading 26 demons in the building."
"Demons? What are you talking about young man? There are no such things as demons." Holland retorted.
"I'm also reading another dimensional tear with an unknown type of energy. That makes two in this building, one under the ground and one in a dimensional pocket."
"How did you - ?"
Alexander headed for the elevator. "Where are you going?" Holland demanded.
"To shut down the tears."
"That's not possible!"
"Oh, so now you're admitting they exist."
"You can't prove anything!"
"Well we can't go public about demons, that's true. But we did manage to destroy all the vampires, so all we need to do is close the tears and prove your dirty tricks. Violent demons are now endangered species anyway, without any legal protections."
He scanned the elevator and saw his scanner showed a button out of phase. "Neat, you hid a button out of phase." He scanned though the different phase frequencies until one made it visible. "And there it is." He pressed the button and the world went white around him.
"You don't belong here." A voice said behind him, he turned to see a dark cloud hovering behind him. He scanned it. "How can you see me? You should see what I show you."
"Like you, I am more then I appear." He set the container down and opened it.
"That is dimensional energy! Humans should not be able to work that!"
"Humans are capable of more then you will ever know. You're going to be trapped in this dimensional pocket."
The energy went dim and Alexander returned it to the container. "Price you pay for working with demons." And the elevator appeared around him again.
