Author's Note: We're back to Ju and her obsession with the Red Plague Doctor. I am still trying to figure out what I am going to do with it. I think I might have the Plague Doctor in the Christmas special. We are going to have to see. I seemed to have given her a friend. (Maybe?) I will come back to this in January. Maybe a bit earlier. I will have to see. Next week, we're going to see America again just like how this pattern goes in this series. For now, enjoy this week's match.
Match Twenty-Four: Red Plague Doctor, Ghost in the Old Library, and Puzzle:
-Ju-
I just have to find out about that plague doctor.
I can't be going crazy when I see her. I know she's real. I just know it. I have been looking up any information about her. I keep coming across nothing. I growled as I gritted my teeth. Grrr! Why can't I get anywhere with this?!
I turned my head when I heard a knock on my door.
"Yeah?" I asked.
"Are you busy right now?" Yao asked. I sighed and dropped my shoulders.
"No," I said. Yao opened the door and poked his head inside.
"Are you okay?" he asked. I leaned back in my chair.
"No," I said. My husband walked in and sat down.
"What's wrong?" Yao asked. "Is it hear again?" I pressed my lips together and nodded. Yao threw back his head and groaned.
"Ju," he said.
"What?" I asked.
"Why do you do this to yourself?" he asked.
"I can't help it," I said. "I have to know. I have to know or I will go crazy."
"But what if it was nothing?" Yao asked.
"It can't be!" I said. I buried my head in my hands and groaned. He patted me on the shoulder.
"Don't," I whimpered. My husband drew back his hand.
"Sorry," he said. I didn't even look up at him.
What's wrong with me? When did I get so obsessive? Maybe Yao is right. But still, I can't help it. I just have to know. I stared at my phone in my hand. Tina texted me this morning.
"Hey girl! How have you been?"
"Fine," I started to type. But then I paused. Am I really fine? I frowned at my screen. I deleted my message.
"Stuck on a headache," I wrote. I deleted the "on a headache" part and hit send. I could have just replied later. What was I doing? I about jumped when those three dots appeared on the screen.
"What's wrong?" Tina wrote back. I didn't know how to answer that. I shoved my phone into my pocket. What was I thinking again? I looked at my laptop. The search results came up empty. There I go again. I reached into my pocket and dialed up Tina.
"Hello?" she asked. I leaned back in chair and sighed.
"I can't find anything about that plague doctor," I said.
"Again?" she asked.
"Yeah," I said, nodding. I looked up at the ceiling.
"I don't what I am doing," I said.
"Why do you want to know?" Tina asked. I paused.
"Huh?" I asked.
"Why do you want to know about this plague doctor lady?" she asked. I frowned as I tried to think.
"I don't know," I said. "Curiosity. She's been on my mind. I don't know." I looked at the portrait of my father on the wall across from me. I tried not to look into his stone dead eyes.
"I don't think the internet is going to give me much," I said. I rose to my feet.
"Looks like I am going to have to do this at the library," I said.
"Old fashioned way, huh?" Tina asked.
"Yep," I said. "Wish me luck."
"Good luck," Tina said.
So I am really doing this. I sent Yao a text of where I'm going. Jing's with him right now. I wasn't going to be gone for long. I had planned to just check out some books and head home.
I can't remember the last time I was in a library. It doesn't look like there are many people around today. Then again, this is a big place. Plenty of places to look around. Speaking of which, I should get started.
I walked down to the encyclopedia section in the very back. I probably should go to the supernatural section first. There is a reason for that. I looked around for a moment.
Three… Two…
I drew in a deep breath.
"One."
I slipped around the corner. I stopped the "secret" door. (It's not really a secret. Nobody is really allowed to go down there.) Let's see, there isn't a security camera in the corner. No one is around here. There isn't anyone coming along either. I can do this.
I grabbed onto the handle and pushed open the door. The cold air hit me right in the face. I could barely keep my eyes open. I don't know how to look down here. I just do.
It's so dark down here.
I took my time walking down the stairs. I looked around as I kept moving.
"Hello? Is anyone down here?"
Of course they aren't. Who the hell would be down here in the dark under a library? Never mind, I just remembered all of the horror movies out there. I made it down to the bottom step. I reached around for the light switch. Ah. There it is.
I flipped on the light switch.
"Oh!"
I hadn't expected to be alone.
"Who are you?" a pale woman asked. She looked about my age but dressed like she was from the 1920s. I had to say that I admitted the short black curly hair looked pretty. I blinked at her.
"Uh… who are you?" Ju asked. The woman put her hands on her hips.
"Why would you want to know?" she asked.
"I'm just here looking for information about a Red Plague doctor," I said. "What are you doing here?" The woman cocked her head to the side.
"Red Plague doctor?" she asked.
"Yeah," I said. "Do you know anything about that?"
"Can't say I do," she said. I frowned. Of course she wouldn't.
"And what are you down here for?" I asked. The woman cleared her throat.
"I'm done here trying to solve an old puzzle that I couldn't in life," she said. "Don't get in my way. And if you solve it before I do, I will be angry at you." I put up my hands.
"Okay, okay," I said. "I won't try to solve your puzzle. I am just down here looking for anything on that Red Plague Doctor." The woman calmed down and cleared her throat.
"Yeah, right, good," she said. "You stay out of my way and I will stay out of yours."
"Right…" I said. I walked over to the bookshelf on the back wall. I took more one look over my shoulder. The woman went back to what she was looking at on another wall. I couldn't see what she was looking at. However, I did see some familiar pictures and articles were pressed against the wall. I might have to take a look while she's not looking. I'm not trying to solve her puzzle or anything. I just want a look.
Suddenly, my phone buzzed in my pocket. Shit. Yao is probably asking when the hell I am getting home. I took one more look behind me before walking over to the exit with my phone in my hand. I doubted that I would get much reception down here.
