Taking care of babies was no easy task. Sometimes, even experienced parents could find themselves at their wit's end when looking after another baby, whether it was their own or someone else's.
In this case, Anakin was currently working on babysitting a friend's baby for the weekend. His goddaughter Olivia Kenobi.
Obi-Wan and his wife Satine were going away to a Republic conference with one of the worlds of Enchantra for the weekend and couldn't take the baby. Bo-Katan was on vacation, and Korkie was sick, so... that left Obi-Wan to ask his former Padawan to take Olivia for the weekend.
Already, there were three little babies in the palace, four little girls, and two teenagers in the palace. And five of those kids were Anakin's. So, it seemed like another baby might be a lot of work, but Anakin didn't mind.
Although, it didn't prove as easy as he thought.
For the daughter of such a well-mannered Jedi, Olivia could be really loud and demanding.
"Shh. Shh. Please don't cry, Olivia." Anakin said tiredly, rocking the baby girl. "Uncle Ani is exhausted right now."
But Olivia kept crying. Anakin sighed. Obi-Wan only dropped her off an hour ago, and already Olivia was wearing her godfather out.
"Are we sure you're Obi-Wan's kid?"
Olivia just continued to cry, and she started to sound louder.
"Shh. I know, I know. You miss your mommy and daddy."
Anakin's parents offered to help him look after the baby, but Anakin, being Anakin, was too proud to ask for help. With Carmine and Caroline away to perform at a private event, Garrett and Mariposa gathering magical plant samples for some new potions, Kara taking Boba and Omega to the movies, and the Bad Batch away on a mission for Cid regarding a sighting for an escaped criminal or something, it fell to Anakin to look after the babies and the four little girls.
"Goldie, this isn't funny!" exclaimed Lamenta out in the hall.
Anakin was tired enough, but seeing Goldie playing Keep Away with Lamenta's doll was not something he could overlook.
"Uncle Anakin! Goldie won't give me my doll!"
"Girls, enough playing Keep Away." Anakin sighed. "And please not so loud! I'm getting a headache!"
"Uncle Anakin?" Mona said. "I got juice on my dress."
"Just go change into something else, Mona. I'm really tired right now."
Then Anakin caught a whiff of something stinky. And when he got closer to the playpen where Luke, Leia, and Charlotte were playing...
"Ugh! Luke! Leia! I just changed you both."
Conveniently, Gabby was walking by, playing with her beach ball.
"Oh! Gabby! Perfect timing. I'll give you cookies if you help me right now, please!"
"Uh, are you okay, Daddy?" Gabby said, getting a whiff of the air. "P.U!"
"I have to change the twins again. Would you mind holding Olivia?"
Olivia was still crying.
"Sure Daddy."
Anakin thanked Gabby, calling her a lifesaver as he placed Olivia into her arms, and Anakin took the twins. But as convenience would have it, Padme came home from her dentist appointment early, and she saw her husband was a mess.
"Ani, have you been watching the kids by yourself?" Padme said, taking Luke to change his diaper just as Anakin finished dressing Leia.
"Not all of them," said Anakin, half asleep. "Kara has Omega and Boba. So, only six of our kids... plus Obi-Wan's."
Olivia started crying again in Gabby's arms, sending the older girl into a bit of a panic.
"Uh, Daddy? I think Olivia needs a change." Gabby said, trying to hold her breath.
Anakin face palmed. This was getting ridiculous.
"Come here, Olivia." Padme said, taking the baby girl into her arms and placing her on the table to change her, while Gabby took her baby brother. and played with him.
Anakin looked about ready to collapse at this point. Being the stubborn guy he was, he was determined to prove he was strong enough to handle the daunting task of babysitting multiple children by himself. But even the strongest Jedi, the famous Hero With No Fear was no match for four energetic little human girls, four babies, and the addition of some of the horses there, at least three of them still being children themselves didn't help either. It was like Anakin was trying to babysit a zoo at this point!
"Ani, why don't you just let your parents help with the kids?" Padme said. "The kids are all of ours to care for."
Anakin sighed as he looked at Olivia in her pram as he pushed her around the hallways to calm her down; he thought she'd never stop crying.
"I don't know." He said. "Obi-Wan has been a good teacher to me for as long as I can remember, and I didn't always to so well appreciating it. So, I guess it's not surprising I wasn't trusted with too many important tasks. At least, what I would've considered important. Now, of all people he could've chosen as his baby's godfather, he chose me, and he entrusted her to me too."
Anakin looked at the baby again, and then he looked into the playroom, where the girls were playing with some of the toys, the baby twins in their play pen, crawling and playing about. But chaos was brewing inside as the kids were all going crazy.
Lamenta and Mona were running about as Mona started playing Alligator with a book, Buttercup was dressed in her karate uniform and kicking an inflatable punching doll while Carousella coached her, Diamond was playfully chasing her tail and making Goldie laugh, while Gabby and Mona were fighting over a plush T-rex.
"Hey, that's my dinosaur, Mona!" Gabby said, getting into a Tug-of-War with her friend.
"Is not, Gabby!" Mona said, pulling.
"Is too!"
"Mona! Gabriella! Both of you, stop." Padme said, taking the toy, making both girls fall down. "If you two can't share, neither of you gets to play with this."
She placed the dinosaur on a high shelf.
"Kids, what is going on?" Padme asked.
"We're bored." Gabby said.
"Where are your grandparents?"
"They went to the store to get more diapers." Lamenta said. "They said they should be back in an hour."
Anakin face-palmed himself for forgetting to make sure they had a good supply of every kind of baby supply from baby formula to diapers.
"Geez, you look tired." Carousella commented, seeing Anakin's messy hair and overall tired state.
"Really? I hadn't noticed." Anakin said sarcastically.
"Do you need to punch the bag? Heeyah!" Buttercup said, kicking the inflatable doll once more. "It relieves my stress before a game."
"No! What I need is to sit down." Anakin collapsed into a beanbag chair, looking about ready to fall asleep.
"Poor Uncle Anakin." Lamenta said. "He really looks like he needs a nap."
Padme could see her husband was definitely exhausted, but there was also the matter of the children there. Anakin needed time to rest, but there was no way the kids would just sit still, being the energetic bunch they were. Unless...
"How would everyone like to hear a story?" Padme said.
"What kind of story?" Mona asked.
"Well, there's a story I know very well about a beautiful swan princess and a prince who must prove his love for her to the world to break a spell." Padme sat in a chair and had the children gather around so she could tell the story of the Swan Duchess.
