"Lastly, there's Petra Macneary. She is the granddaughter of the king of Brigid, an archipelago to the west of Fodlan. Brigid is a vassal state of the Empire, which is how she came to be enrolled here. Being incredibly smart and studious, I'm sure you will not have an issue with her as your student."
Byleth, the Officer's Academy's newest professor, listened to the brief rundown of the students of the Black Eagles' Upper Echelon. All this was given by none other than the House Leader herself: Edelgard von Hresvelg, the future emperor of the Adrestian Empire.
"I see. Including yourself, there are eight in this elite class."
"Correct. They're… a colorful bunch, but you have my word that they are the best and brightest of the Black Eagles, and all of the Empire for that matter."
Byleth hummed at Edelgard's high praises of her classmates. From what he understood, all but two were from nobility. As for the two that weren't, one was born a commoner but made a name for herself at a famous opera company, while the other comes from royalty of the country of Brigid.
In all, they all seemed like individuals who should be regarded in high esteem, but they did not come without their quirks. One's extremely reclusive nature, one's competitive spirit that seems to be fixated on Edelgard herself, and one's hobby of… napping.
It begs to question just how unique the students of the Blue Lions and Golden Deer were.
And ultimately, he will need to choose one of the three houses to lead as its homeroom professor.
That was why, per Lady Rhea's request, he was going to each class to learn more about the students that could be under his tutelage.
Since he happened to cross paths with Edelgard in the Reception Hall, the Black Eagles were first. Thanks to her, he had gotten a handle of the people he would be meeting shortly, but there was one person the leader of the Black Eagles did not mention.
"What about you?"
"Me?" Edelgard was noticeably taken aback by Byleth's sudden question. She, herself, noticed and quickly recomposed herself. "Well, let's see…"
Edelgard cupped her hand on her chin and gazed at the ceiling above pensively, thinking about how to answer the professor's question.
"Some see me as a bit distant. Oftentimes, they may even see me as arrogant."
"And do you agree with them?"
"I don't blame them, but there's little to be done about it. One day, I must rise to become Adrestia's next emperor."
"...I see."
"What else…? Well, it seems to me that we may have similar personalities."
"Hmm… Similar personalities."
It was an interesting insight, but Byleth wasn't sure what to make of it, given that he had only known her for a very short time. Although, based on what she had said so far, or rather what others had viewed her, there was someone he believed better matched Edelgard's personality.
After noticing Byleth take a glance over her, Edalgard curiously looked over her shoulder only to be taken aback once again seeing that there was someone behind her.
Hair as white as her own and a scarlet eye with the other covered with an eyepatch. A blank expression similar to the new professor's but with slightly more life as he munched on a jelly-filled bun without a care in the world.
"..."
"..."
The Eisner brothers simply stared at one another silently, with Edelgard between them. It wasn't uncommon for them to see each other without as much of a greeting, but for Edelgard, it was an unusual sight.
After another minute passed, Byleth glanced at the bun Haruki was holding with his left arm.
"What did father say about eating too many sweets?"
"..."
"..."
MUNCH MUNCH MUNCH
In a blink of an eye, the bun was gone, with Haruki licking jelly off his lip. And with a straight face, he said, "the old man won't know about it now, is he?"
Only a sigh came out of the professor.
"He will know if he sees you, Haru. The bandages are covered with jelly."
"If he sees me."
Another sigh.
"I won't be involved if he does. Regardless, Seteth is expecting you. Why haven't you gone to see him?"
"What do you think I'm trying to do?"
"Devouring pastry."
"...Smart-ass."
This truly was an unusual sight that Edelgard could not help but smile at the whole thing. But it goes to show that even mercenary siblings can act like siblings in their own way. It made her feel… nostalgic.
"You haven't answered my question."
"I wanted a bite to eat, so I went to the dining hall."
"I assumed that was the case," Byleth crossed his arms in a scolding manner. "However, knowing you, it should not have taken long to finish your meal."
"...An annoying deer got me preoccupied."
"Oh?" Edelgard finally chimed in. "Would this deer happen to be Claude?"
"Tsk…" Haruki clicked his tongue but did not even glance at Edelgard's way. "Hearing his name annoys me. Honestly, that noble doesn't know how to keep his mouth shut."
"Believe me, I understand that feeling," Edelgard empathetically chuckled, having been through a similar situation with the heir to House Reigan.
If Byleth recalled, Claude von Reigan was the House Leader of the Golden Deer, and he seemed to have taken an interest in Haruki, much to his younger brother's chagrin. Judging by Edelgard's reaction, Claude tended to poke others into conversation. It explained why Haruki was running late. But Byleth needed to make sure about something.
"Was that the only reason?"
"Of course it is… No other reason…"
"..."
The professor took a step forward, slightly leaning down to see him face-to-face. As he did, though, Haruki averted his gaze. This was a habit that Byleth knew all too well.
"Haru."
"...Tsk."
Even Haruki knew that lying his way out was impossible.
"I'll ask again. Was that the only reason?"
A third sigh. This time, it came from a golden-haired child standing next to the younger brother.
"Of course it wasn't," Himari finally spoke her piece. "This dummy won't admit it, but we ended up getting lost. I told him we should have accepted Prince Dimitri's help from the start! But Nooooo being the stubborn mule that he is- OWW NOT AGAIN!"
Himari's heated words were literally stomped out by Haruki's crutch to her foot.
"I see," Byleth nodded as stood back up-right. "That explains it."
"No one told me how huge this place was, dammit," Haruki finally admitted.
If put that way, Byleth supposed he couldn't entirely blame Haruki for being lost. Garreg Mach was a large place that even he would have gotten lost had Seteth not given him a general tour of the campus. If that was the case, Haruki should have asked for help. But as Himari said, he was stubborn.
He wished to continue along with his task of meeting the students without interruption, but he couldn't possibly leave Haruki alone, or else he'd never reach his destination. And it wouldn't be just because of him getting lost.
"Halt, for a moment," Byleth heard Sothis' voice within his mind. It seemed that she was actually awake this whole time, quietly watching things play out until now. "I know what you're thinking, and I agree this brother of yours can be so hopeless, but why don't we leave the task to a willing individual."
"Professor."
Then, Edelgard called him by his title that he had yet to grow accustomed to.
"If you permit me, I can show Haruki the way."
"Huh?" the boy in question now glared at Edelgard, not even trying to hide his vexation. He had already denied Dimitri's help; now it looks as though he wanted to deny the princess'.
He truly was a stubborn one.
"Are you sure that's wise?" Byleth asked Sothis.
"Hmph! Bold of you to doubt my intuition. Do you recall what I said after the skirmish? Being with lively souls like this little one here will do the boy some good."
"I recall. But I'm still not sure what you mean?"
"And I told you to figure that out yourself. At any rate, this is a perfect opportunity for him. Besides, she is willing to help, and we are already preoccupied as is. No need to waste any more time."
Byleth was hesitant, not because he was against or disagreed with what Sothis said. It was because he was concerned about how Haruki would fare.
Haruki's withdrawn behavior, especially with those of nobility, was no secret. By this point, he would have spoken in protest, but his mouth was being covered by Himari's hand, preventing him from saying a word. Of course, the princess was oblivious to what was happening in front of her, given that Himari seemed to still be invisible to all eyes except Byleth and Haruki's.
"SAY YES! SAY YES!" Himari began to nod frantically. "Oh, the last thing I need is for him to get us lost, again!"
"Hhrmm?"
He let out a muffled grumble, with his glare shifting from the princess to the mysterious child.
"Don't give me that look. It was obvious that we were lost! We only made it this far because you pinpointed Byleth's aura with that sensory ability of yours!"
"..."
"What do you mean you'll just keep using your senses until you find his office?! You'll just end up exhausting yourself before you do. Let the princess lead you the way."
"..."
"You really are stubborn! Just admit you're socially anxious!"
"..."
"Hey! You take that back right now, you pint-sized brat!"
"It seems like they can speak telepathically like us." Byleth observed.
"So it seems. Himari… Hmmmm…"
"Is something wrong?"
"No, not wrong. Just wondering. About the girl that is. My memory was all but wiped out except for my name. And yet, I was able to recognize Himari the moment I saw her. And yet, I do not know why... How very vexing."
"Hmm."
If Sothis had immediately recognized her, then it was a possibility that she and Himari were acquainted somehow. But if that was the case, why had Himari not been able to do the same? And if what he assumed was actually true, how were they even connected to begin with?
"More questions than answers," Byleth mentally sighed, thinking back to last night and the words his brother said.
Such an uncomfortable feeling…
"Professor?" Edelgard called him once more. "Is something the matter?"
"Oh dear. Look at us. Losing ourselves, pondering our own thoughts and all. Best not keep the little one waiting, right? I know you have your answer."
That he did. Now, he braced himself…
"It's nothing," he shook his head. "If it's no trouble I would appreciate your help, Lady Edelgard."
"HHRMMM?!" a predictable response.
"Please, there is no need to be formal. You can just call me Edelgard," the princess warmly smiled at the professor, ignoring the distraught Haruki.
"Very well," Byleth nodded, also ignoring his brother. "Edelgard it is."
Her smile grew wider, but Byleth did not return in kind. Or rather… he could not.
"OWWW! IS THIS GOING TO BE A COMMON THEME?!"
"Oi," after another pained shout from Himari, Byleth glanced at her, but only to lock eyes with Haruki instead - his mouth no longer covered. "Bold of you to start making decisions for me By… You honestly think I'll play along, huh?"
He was irritated. Enough that Byleth could feel the intensity. He knew just how unhinged Haruki could be when he got like that, whether it be in or out of the battlefield. It would be a problem if he let him be and cause a ruckus now. He needed to nip the bud before the fury blossomed. That was why he needed to carefully think about his next words. Fortunately, after countless similar scenarios, the task was simple.
"Sorry, Haru," Byleth said to him, undeterred by his brother's intimidating animosity; he was used to it. "I'd show you the way, but I cannot waste time, right now. Remember, I'm a professor, now."
Haruki then twitched his brow, and his eye softened. "...They're having you meet the students, now?"
"Per Lady Rhea's instructions, yes. I can't ignore my duties, which is why I'm having Edelgard help you in my stead."
"...Hresvelg," he muttered, glaring at Edelgard. "Well, I get it, but does it really have to be-"
"If you let her, I'll treat you to cake."
"Done."
"..."
When irritated, Haruki was prone to not think things logically as he normally would. Luckily, with only a few words that give a concise explanation, as well as a small incentive, he'd begin to think things clearly, again.
"Hehehe! Like clockwork," Sothis sounded pleased. "You truly know how to handle him."
"Naturally. We've been together for six years now."
"Six years... It must have been quite troublesome to keep him in check."
"It has… but it never bothered me."
"So I see. Well, I am hopeful the patience you've gained from that will help you take care of your new students."
"Perhaps," he said to her, turning to Edelgard who had an amused smile. "My new students…"
"Well then, shall we get going, Haruki?" she asked, to which Haruki only shrugged in response. With a nod, the princess began to walk toward the direction of where Seteth's office was, not before giving parting words to Byleth. "Let's speak again soon, Professor."
"You owe me cake, now, By," Haruki waved goodbye, proceeding to follow Edelgard, but not before Byleth halted him by putting a hand on his shoulder. "What?"
"..."
He did not reply, instead, he turned Haruki around. He then touched his forehead with his other hand and lifted up his long bangs to reveal a bandage hiding behind it. "This wasn't there last night… What happened?"
"Just had a little fall in my room," Haruki answered, but his averted eye was enough for Byleth to know that he was lying again.
…Or so he thought.
"It's true."
"...?"
Haruki's gaze was directed at Himari standing beside him.
"He really did fall… But I picked him up, and patched him up real good." She lifted her hand with a single pinky pointing out. "And I'll keep doing so as many times as it takes. I pinky promise on that."
"…"
Only a slight widening of the eyes expressed his surprise. Regardless of what they said, whatever happened to Haruki after the meeting was more than just a fall… But it looked as though Himari somehow settled it, based on her heavy words filled with conviction. That along with that smile radiating confidence.
"Tsk, quit fretting over every little thing," he glowered at Himari, then to Byleth, slapping his hand away. "You're acting like the old man… It's annoying."
Haruki turned on his heel and walked away to join Edelgard, who was patiently waiting for him and seeing what was happening unfold.
"It was more than just a little thing, you dummy… Geez," Himari solemnly said. She then turned her head and noticed Byleth staring at her. "Oh! Don't worry, Byleth. Just leave it to me!"
With a thumbs-up, Himari dashed away to rejoin his companion's side.
"Himari seems to be in high spirits today," Sothis manifested herself and floated next to Byleth, "And it looks as though she wants us to put our trust in her in looking after the boy. Hm… quite the daunting task, in that case, but if anyone can handle it, I believe it's her."
"..."
"I sense that you're not entirely convinced Byleth. Must you really doubt my intuition for a second time?"
"Apologies, Sothis, it's just…"
"No need for more words," she interrupted. "I understand. We hardly know the girl. From how she came to be, to her motives and desires. She is an unknown entity."
"That's what concerns me."
"If that's the case, does that mean you're also wary of me?"
"..."
Sothis…
She was just like Himari.
An unknown entity…
"I cannot deny that, entirely. But…"
"But?"
" I believe you don't have ill intentions."
"...You have every right to be suspicious of me. Even so, I am relieved to hear your words. But you should look at Himari in that light as well."
"Why?"
"I sense a kindred spirit in her. Even if you don't believe you can trust her, know that she won't do any harm to Haruki. He and the girl are one, just like you and I are one. She will guide him, just like I will guide you."
"...I hope you're right."
"I know I am," Sothis floated around him to meet him face to face. "So, please don't doubt my intuition again, thank you very much."
"..."
"I'll take your silence as an agreement. Now then, enough of the chit chat. Let us get back to the task at hand, shall we?"
"...Right." With a nod, Byleth took one final glance at the direction where Haruki and Edelgard went. "Don't do anything reckless, Haru."
He walked away in the other direction toward the Academy classrooms. His brother was still on his mind, but he knew that he shouldn't be so concerned about him. Because after six years being together and watching over him, Byleth knew one thing.
Haruki Eisner is not weak.
"You can't be serious…"
Edelgard heard Haruki's first spoken words since they started to head to Seteth's office. Turning her head, she saw an annoyed expression etched on his face, one that very much matched the annoyance his voice spewed.
"His office is up there?"
Turning her head back forward, she saw the steps leading to the second floor of the Reception Hall, where the faculty offices were located. It seemed Haruki never realized that.
"Yes, it is," she replied. "Professor's Manuela's infirmary is on the second floor, as well. It should be familiar to you once you're there."
"He could have just told me the way," Haruki sighed as he began to make his way up the stairs. "You can go. I'll find my way on my own from here."
"Oh? Will you be alright?"
"Obviously. I'd be a dumbass if I can't find him at this point."
"While I don't doubt that, that wasn't what I meant."
Edelgard moved her eyes to Haruki's crutch, then down to his injured foot. She did not have to be a medical expert to know that Haruki was far from being fully recovered. Climbing up those stairs could prove too strenuous for his weakened state to handle.
"I'll be fine," Haruki insisted. "This isn't… your… problem..."
Despite his bravado, Haruki's wounds were already getting the better of him. His wounded leg was shaking, and he was already short of breath. He was worn out, even though he barely made it halfway up the first flight of stairs.
"You may say that, but your struggle tells me otherwise," Edelgard said, reaching Haruki in no time. She put a hand around his shoulder and gently put the other on his chest. "Besides, I'm not so callous as to ignore someone who obviously needs assistance."
"I don't need your-" Haruki suddenly and unnaturally jerked forward, enough that he and Edelgard lost their balance momentarily.
"..."
"Um… Is something the matter?" Edelgard raised a brow.
"Just a sudden headache… It's been happening recently," he answered, tapping his crutch on the floor rather loudly. Louder than one normally would. "Tsk…"
Then he clicked his tongue.
"Hmm… I see," she nodded, not dwelling in this strange matter… for now. "If it's causing you trouble, you might want to see Professor Manuela after your meeting."
"...Maybe."
"Well, for now, let's make it to the second floor first. Nice and easy."
Haruki let out a reluctant sigh, but he accepted her assistance.
The two slowly and steadily climbed the stairs. Even with Edelgard's assistance, Haruki was still struggling. Despite that, he was quite… very quiet. Each step was muffled, and even the tapping of the crutch was barely audible.
No doubt it was the result of years of battle experience. To Haruki, it must be muscle memory that allowed him to be this proficient in hiding his presence… at such a young age too.
No wonder he was able to sneak up on them so easily back at the forest. It was at that moment, where he purposely made his presence felt, Edelgard felt the same strange aura that she felt with her new teacher. An aura emanating ominous, yet unwavering strength. However, there seemed to be something else lurking within...
"...What?"
Haruki noticed her staring at him, sounding annoyed.
"Apologies. I was only curious about something. You'll be a student, correct?"
"Yeah?"
"I see… Pity."
"...?"
"It would have been ideal if you lent your services to the Empire. You and your mercenary company's strength would have been a great asset to us."
"Not like that'll happen now," he curtly replied. "Now that the old man got us stuck here."
The old man… he was most likely talking about…
"Your father, Jeralt. Also known as the Blade Breaker and former captain of the Knights of Seiros."
"..." Haruki went mute, but his furrowed brow showed his displeasure at the subject.
"The professor had mentioned that Jeralt's past was unknown to him. Was it the same for you?"
He nodded. Unlike Professor Byleth, who looked indifferent about the revelation, Haruki looked rather… displeased by the fact that Jeralt kept his past a secret.
"How curious," Edelgard mused about Jeralt's actions. It is not often you hear a captain of a renowned order of knights to throw it all away and live a life as a wandering mercenary… with two boys to boot. Frankly, it was unheard of.
"But," a heavy sigh pushed her away from her thoughts. Paying attention to Haruki once more, she noticed that he calmed down, but his voice emanated determination. "Whether he likes it or not… he'll talk."
"He may have his reasons, but I'm sure he'll open up to you and provide the answers you're looking for."
"He better," he sighed once more. "I don't like this."
Sighing seemed like a common theme for the boy. But Edelgard could not blame him. He may still be young, but it was likely that most of his life was on the battlefield. Now, his life got turned sideways due to his father's connections. As a result, his battlefield was now mostly going to be in a classroom.
"I understand the frustration," Edelgard emphasized. "However, I believe this opportunity can benefit you if you take advantage of it."
"Hmph…"
"The Officer's Academy has state-of-the-art facilities. You'd have the chance to hone your already superb swordsmanship, not to mention you can learn different skills, such as tactics, leadership, the magic arts."
"Magic?"
Haruki suddenly perked up at the sound of the word.
"I'm surprised. You don't come across as someone who'd be interested in the subject."
"I'm… not," he said, "Although it'd probably be something I'll need to learn..."
"And why is that?"
"...We made it," he abruptly brushed off the subject.
Looking ahead, Edelgard saw that they had indeed reached the second floor.
"So I see," she helped Haruki go up the final step and leaned him against the wall to let him catch his breath, which he definitely needed.
"This damn place… isn't so kind to the crippled…"
"Now that you mention, you're probably right," the princess chuckled.
While she was still curious about the boy's unexpected interest in magic, Edelgard decided not to push the matter further. For one, Haruki didn't seem to be willing to discuss it. If he didn't wish to share, she had no right to pry.
"Seteth's office is just around the corner, the first door to the right. You cannot miss it."
"...right," he nodded, pushing himself off the wall he was leaning on. "Seems like… I owe you…"
"There's no need for that," she shook her head. "Think nothing of-"
"No… I get very annoyed if I don't pay a debt owed, even if it's something small like this."
"That… is surprisingly honorable."
"..."
"But if that is the case, think of this as returning the favor for saving us."
"No… don't bring that up."
"But-"
"Just think of something else, before I get really annoyed."
Edelgard didn't understand. But the way Haruki was looking at her with that cold, distant eye at the thought of his selfless act during the night at Remire, he was serious about leaving the matter behind.
"...If you insist," she reluctantly abided by his wishes. "Well… I guess if it's no trouble, I would like to have a try of your cooking. Professor Byleth told me all about it."
"Dammit, By. Why the hell are you sharing that of all things?" Haruki pinched the bridge of his nose and sighed. "Oh fine… if that's what you want."
Edelgard smiled and nodded, "I look forward to that." She then put her hand on her chest and bowed. "As leader of the Black Eagles, I welcome you to the Officer's Academy. And even if you want nothing in return, as Edelgard von Hresvelg, I still wish to thank you for saving me. And I hope we both can learn from each other in the coming year."
"..."
Haruki said nothing, but as Edelgard raised his head, she only saw a blank stare. It made him incredibly difficult to read, just like the professor. It made her wonder… What was he thinking at that very moment?
"I'll take my leave now. Best of luck with your meeting with Seteth. And I hope you take the Black Eagle House into consideration should the chance arrive."
Haruki only gave a curt nod and walked away, disappearing as he turned the corner… without as much as parting words. Now, Edelgard was left alone
"Haruki Eisner. What a strange boy,"
However, she ultimately left further intrigued by him, just as much as she was with the professor.
She let out a sigh and turned on her heel to make her way back downstairs, not before glancing over to the double doors that led to the Audience Chamber. The place she knew that woman was located…
Edelgard clenched her hand into a fist before curtly turning her back from the doors and walking back down the stairs.
"Oh thank all that is holy and divine!"
Haruki was now in front of the door to Seteth's office.
"See? things went so much more smoothly with the princess' help."
"I wouldn't have needed her help if By just told me where to go."
"But you would've never made it up the stairs without Edelgard. Maybe that's why Byleth even allowed her to help you in the first place."
"Knowing him… I wouldn't doubt it," Haruki agreed. Then, his brow furrowed as he stared at Himari, "Speaking of 'help', yours wasn't needed or wanted."
"Oh, Hush! Who would miss the chance to speak to a real life princess? Just think of my intervention as a small push."
"You smacked me in the back of the head… and nearly made me and Hresvelg fall flat on the stairs."
"Okay, maybe it was a tiny bit more than a push, but don't sweat the small stuff! At least it got the conversation going."
"I never wanted it to start to begin with."
"But it happened whether you liked it or not."
"..."
"Well?"
"Well what?"
"Don't be daft," Himari playfully poked her elbow at Haruki, ignoring the fact that she was actually poking at his ribs. "What did you think?"
"About Hresvelg?"
"Who else would I be talking about, dummy! A tough and kind beauty like her, there's no way you don't have something to say. Liiiike…"
"If you think that I'm head over heels for her, you're mistaken."
"Well it was worth a shot… I wonder what your type is."
"Such a pointless thing to think about…"
"Hey! Just trying to lighten the mood here. You feel a bit... tense."
"…"
Himari had just sensed Haruki's feelings again. Of course, she was spot-on, and he couldn't deny it if he wanted to. And she had a good idea why he felt this way.
"It's about Edelgard, after all."
"That easy, huh?"
"Very," she nodded. "But what about her makes you feel that way… WAIT! Don't tell me. You're SECRETLY in love with her!"
"As if, you idiot!"
"Then what?! Don't leave me hanging!"
"She just left a strange impression," he gazed back to where the stairs were located, where Edelgard was just moments ago. "I… just don't get her. And that makes me feel uneasy."
"Hmmm," Himari looked back in the direction as well. "Well, this is only the first time you actually talked to her."
"Still… It's going to be a pain if she ends up becoming a problem like Riegan."
"We won't know that until we know more about her… Claude and even Dimitri too for that matter. We've haven't even scratched the surface yet, meaning that you'll need plenty of quality time with those three to understand them."
"..."
"But first," Himari then knocked on Seteth's door. Each thud echoing across the hall. "You have to take the first step. And since you're purposely stalling, I'll give you another push."
"I wasn't… Oh screw it."
"Enter," a voice of a man could be heard from the other side of the door. It was Haruki's cue to finally begin his meeting.
"Let's get this over with," he said aloud, turning the knob and opening the door.
The room was rather spacious, and it was well organized. As expected for someone in high-authority. At the far end was a desk with a stern looking man sitting behind it. He had green hair and eyes. And those eyes shifted from the papers in front of him to Haruki.
"Ah, I take it you are Haruki Eisner, correct?"
He was younger than expected, but the way he carried himself - from his speech, to his posture, to even the tidiness of his clothing - he was anything but an amatuer.
"Yes, that's me," Haruki replied to the man. "And I take it you're Seteth, then?"
"Correct," Seteth nodded. "It is a pleasure to finally make your acquaintance."
"The pleasure is mine," Haruki slightly bowed his head. He was not one for formalities, but he at least understood that they're required during times like these if things are to go smoothly.
Seteth nodded. His eyes were serious, but they were at least not calculating or as annoying as Claude's.
"Please, have a seat," Seteth motioned Haruki to the couches on his right.
Abiding him, Haruki approached the couches and took a seat on one, while Seteth got up from his desk and approached to sit down on the couch across from his.
"Tea?" Seteth offered, pointing at a tea set placed on the table between them.
He could think of a handful of times when he drank tea. He wasn't much of an enthusiast, and the only times he did accept an offer was when the tea smelled sweet.
This was one such case.
After a nod from Haruki, Seteth handed him a teacup. The aroma was pleasant, and after taking a sip, Haruki tasted the strong sweetness of apple.
"...Not bad."
"I'm glad you enjoy it," Seteth said, pouring some tea for himself. "While I prefer a Four-Spice blend, my younger sister enjoys Sweet-Apple. Thus, I've grown to be fond of it myself."
"Hm, your sister has good taste," Haruki took another sip before resting the teacup on his lap. "But, I'm pretty sure I didn't come here for tea time."
"Of course," Seteth agreed. "However, before we begin, I would like to ask how you are faring with your injuries. Any new concerns since Professor Manuela tended to you?"
"No… Everything's as good as it can be right now because of her."
"I see. That is a relief to hear," Seteth lowered his gaze and his serious expression became solemn. "However, while I am grateful you came to the students' aid, it pains me to know you were injured due to our negligence in protecting them."
"Don't fret over it," he assured Seteth. "Injuries aren't new in my line of work."
"Hm… You are quite forthright about that fact."
"A fact that I've grown to accept."
"I can't say that's all too comforting to hear, especially coming from someone as young as yourself. In my honest opinion, such a life is not suited for a child."
"A child, huh?" Haruki mused before taking another sip of his tea. "It isn't comforting, but that's the way the puzzle pieces fell… Can we proceed to what I came here for?"
Haruki had a familiar feeling where this conversation was headed, so he immediately ceased any attempt to press the matter further. One attempt to reveal his life story was more than enough for him.
"...Very well."
Luckily, Seteth was willing - albeit hesitantly - to drop the subject. That hesitance, however, made Haruki uneasy. It was likely that he wouldn't be as lucky to avoid talking about himself, unless Dimitri decided to barge in unannounced again. Of course, such a thing would be highly doubtful.
"To begin," Seteth continued, "How familiar are you about the Officers Academy."
"Ah, a test of knowledge. It seems like the breakfast date with Claude and Dimitri turned out to be worth it."
"Don't call it a date," Haruki mentally sighed. But he agreed with Himari, nonetheless, as much as he hated to admit it. Thanks to Claude and Dimitri, Haruki essentially parroted what they told him to Seteth: the academy's purpose, the three houses, the Upper Echelon, etcetera.
"I'm impressed," Seteth said. "It is good that you are well informed. Indeed, as you mentioned, the Officer's Academy was formed primarily to give the future leaders of Fodlan the knowledge they need to lead this land into a more prosperous future. It also serves as an opportunity for students from each of three nations to bond with one another in hopes for better relations among them. With that purpose in mind, Garreg Mach, being a neutral entity that serves under neither one of the three nations, was a suitable location to establish the Officers Academy."
"Hm… from a geographical and a political standpoint, the monastery was the most logical choice," Haruki concurred, despite not caring about such matters.
"Indeed it was. Proceeding with this topic, how familiar are you with the monastery?"
"Only that it's the home to the Church of Seiros."
"And how much do you know about the Church?"
"Only the name."
"I see," Seteth pinched his chin pensively. "I supposed it is to be expected for a mercenary. However, given the circumstances with your father… Hmm."
At that, Haruki became curious as he tilted his head. "What about the old man?"
"Despite Jeralt's former role as the Captain of the Knights of Seiros, it would seem that he spoke scarcely about his tenure with the Church."
"More like nothing at all…" Haruki furrowed his brow, quickly feeling irritated about Jeralt's secrecy once again.
"I imagine that revelation came as a shock to you."
"'Shock' is too modest to describe how I'm feeling."
"Your confusion is completely understandable, Haruki. And to be frank… it is a feeling that we share."
"...?"
Haruki wasn't expecting to hear such a thing from Seteth. At first, he thought he was just saying that just to make him feel better. However, as Haruki peered into the man's eyes and sensed his aura, he realized that he was speaking nothing but the truth.
"Really?"
"Indeed," Seteth nodded. "I am nothing but dumbfounded about Lady's Rhea's decisions… especially appointing your older brother as the academy's newest professor."
"You're worried about By?" Haruki asked. Seteth's thoughts about Byleth had piqued his interest.
"'Doubtful' would be a more appropriate way of putting it," Seteth corrected. "However my worries can be something we can discuss another time."
"..."
Haruki couldn't help expressing his disappointment. However, he wasn't going to push Seteth into talking. That would be along the lines of "causing trouble".
"While I do have my concerns as her advisor, Lady Rhea has put her utmost faith in your group, and I will abide by her wishes, for the time being. But know that should you break that trust, I will have no choice but to take proper actions to rectify our lapse of judgment, do I make myself clear?"
"Crystal," Haruki nodded at Seteth's stern warning. He did not take offense to it, for if he were in his shoes, he would be just as cautious. Anyone with a working mind would.
"Good," Seteth set down his own teacup and grabbed a paper and quill that he brought with him. "Now, we can proceed with the actual registration. I understand you are an orphan, resulting in us having very little to no information at all about you. Therefore, I will ask you some questions so that we can obtain the information we don't have, as well as verifying the information that we do"
"..."
As he thought. There was no way of avoiding talking about himself.
"Do not worry if you don't know, and if there is a particular question you do not feel comfortable sharing, you are free to not answer."
"...Right."
Even with Seteth's reassurance, Haruki felt uneasy about it. But there was no way around it, so he was going to play this by ear… and make sure he said the right words so as not to regret them.
"To begin let us start with the basics. Haruki Eisner, may I have you state the day of your birth."
"1st day of the Pegasus Moon, Imperial Year 1164."
"Do you know the place of your birth?"
"No. But I have been wandering along the west side of the Alliance. That was before the old man took me in."
"Your adoptive father. Jeralt Reus Eisner."
"Yes."
"I see… and when exactly did Jeralt take you in?"
"Around six years ago."
"Hmm, which means that you were about ten when he adopted you."
"Pretty much."
"So before that, you wandered within the Alliance… alone?"
"...Yes."
"And what of your birth parents?"
"Never knew them... I literally grew up alone for a while."
"..." Seteth stopped writing in the parchment, surprised about what he was hearing. "I take it that it was very difficult for you."
"I won't deny it," Haruki shrugged off his sympathy. "Don't ask for details… I'd rather not reminisce."
Silence filled the room. Haruki was staring at his reflection within his tea, and Seteth quietly looked at the boy with a hint of worry after what he was told - or perhaps it was sympathy. Haruki could tell the man wished to know more… but he truly did not to be reminded about those hellish days before Jeralt took him in.
"If that is your wish."
Luckily, Seteth agreed to his request.
"At any rate, I find it concerning how little you know about you own history, including who your true parents were. Knowing your date of birth is a miracle in itself. Does that not trouble you?"
"I don't bother thinking about it," Haruki's eye glanced away from Seteth's. "It's pointless now."
"...Liar."
"..."
He may say it's pointless… but in reality, It actually annoyed him to no end.
Not a day went by when he didn't question who he really was. Those thoughts had been with him like an uncomfortable itch never to be satisfied.
Even if it was depressing, he wished he'd know something. But for an amnesiac like him, it may be something he'd never know.
It truly was annoying.
"But…"
However…
"Even if I don't know, I'm content with who I'm with."
"You mean Jeralt and Byleth."
Haruki nodded. "My family… Those two are weird as hell, they're ruthless in battle, and they always find ways to irritate me. But that doesn't mean they aren't good people."
Even if he may never know his past, let alone his real parents, he still had Byleth and Jeralt… the two people that allowed him to move forward as he was. The only two he could trust without hesitation. The only two he considered family without regret.
Despite their flaws, they were good people.
They were probably a little too good for taking in an orphaned brat with no reason to live. But they did just that regardless without a second thought. They were better people than Haruki could ever be.
That was what he believed.
"Is that so," Seteth smiled for the first time. "Despite not being related by blood, you are family nonetheless. It pleases me that you ultimately found a place to belong after so much hardships. Such bonds are truly precious and must be treated as such."
"..."
"Well then," Seteth proceeded to clear his throat. "It seems we went rather off tangent. Shall we proceed with the rest of the registration?"
With Haruki's affirmation, Seteth proceeded along with additional questions in hopes of learning more about the boy. Luckily, his questions were not as deeply personal as the initial ones. They mostly dealt with his experience as a mercenary, such as the kinds of jobs he took, which ranged from escorting merchants from one place to the next to helping nobles quell a rebellion in their territory. Seteth likely wanted an idea of the battle experience Haruki had, and it was safe to say that he had plenty.
Then came Haruki's educational history. However, it was not something to brag about, compared to his fighting prowess. It was not to say he was not intelligent, however. He is capable of reading and writing, but the only form of schooling he had was from Alexia's tutoring that he and Byleth had to sit through in between jobs. Plus, he'd occasionally read any book he came across, but even that was only few and far between.
Besides his experience in both battle and academics, Seteth would at some point revert back to asking Haruki personal questions. Not about his past per se. He only asked trivial things such as interests, likes, dislikes, hobbies, and so forth. Haruki didn't understand why such information was needed. His only guess was that the Academy would use it to determine what classes they are more suitable in, but that was a stretch.
Regardless, no matter the question Seteth asked, Haruki answered with simple and straight-to-the-point responses lest to avoid any unnecessary tangents again, and avoided any questions he would rather not respond to
In time, Seteth would exhaust all the questions he needed to ask.
"Excellent, this information should be enough, and we shall add it to our records. I thank you Haruki."
"It's not like I had much of a choice," Haruki shrugged off Seteth's gratitude. "But, something tells me we're not done yet. So, what's next?"
"Indeed, there are a couple things that must be completed before we can officially classify you as a student of the Officers Academy."
"That being?"
"First, the entrance examination. It is a requirement for all individuals who plan to attend the Academy. Yours will be scheduled for tomorrow. After that, you will have to undergo a physical examination with Professor Manual."
"A physical… examination," Haruki repeated, furrowing his brow while slowly shifting his gaze to his bandaged arm.
"Will that be a problem?"
"...No," the boy avoided Seteth's eyes. "It's fine… so don't worry about it."
"...Very well, then," Seteth did not sound all too convinced, but otherwise did not press further for details. "At any rate, there is another matter we must discuss."
"There's more?"
"Yes… and it concerns the annual fees."
"..."
"..."
"Annual… fees?"
"Yes," Seteth nodded. "The Officers Academy strives to provide quality education for its students … However, it is not a free service."
"Not a free service," he repeated again and rubbed his temple, cursing himself for overlooking such crucial detail. "Well, how much is the fee?"
There was no question that it was going to be expensive. After all, the Academy is where most of the students originated from a noble family. He knew the nobles had the money to take their brats to this school, but how much did they need to pay?
"When we total the cost of tuition, room and board for the year, activity fees, as well as the cost of other amenities, the total cost would be... 70,000 Bullions."
"..."
"..."
"...Hey, Haruki…? Did I hear that right?"
"Can you repeat that, Seteth?"
"70,000 Bullions."
"..."
"..."
"..."
"...70,000 BULLIONS! ARE THEY INSANE?!"
"70,000," Haruki was so taken aback, he was now speaking his mind aloud. "That's about a few month's worth of work. Even then…"
"Haruki?"
"Even if we do earn that much, it's gone right away to get us ready for the next jobs."
"Haruki."
"I don't even think the old man has anything saved up. Even if he did, he must have drank it all away at the taverns… Hell, we're barely scraping by just to make it to the Kingdom because he and the rest drank the last tavern dry."
"Haruki!" Seteth raised his voice, trying to get the boy's attention as he was jumbled in his own thoughts.
"Oi…"
"?!"
However, the Archbishop's advisor got more than just the boy's attention.
"Oi, Oi, Oi, Oi, Oi…"
"Oh, this doesn't bode well."
Even Himari knew that Seteth just added more kindles to the fire.
"Let me get this straight, we saved the asses of your precious students, and this is how you repay us? One of your knights convinced my stupid old man to come with him. Your Archbishop then convinced the said stupid old man to rejoin your ranks, then she had my brother be thrown into a teaching gig he's hardly qualified for while have me become a student AND have me pay for it out of my own pocket …?! What the hell?! Do you realize how utterly stupid that sounds?! This is a load of pegasus sh-!"
Crack
"...?!"
A sudden sound stopped him. Looking down, he noticed his hand was gripping the teacup much harder than needed to … and now the handle had a fresh crack on it.
"Enough!" Then, an elbow hit Haruki's healing ribs, courtesy of Himari. "Flapping your gums won't help at all! Now look at what you did! You broke a perfectly good teacup!"
"Does this guy really expect me to go along with this absurdity?!"
"Believe me, I know how you feel, but do we really have a choice here? This is the path we chose, just so you know."
"I know that, but-"
"It can't be helped, Haruki. These are the cards that we were given, we just have to live with it. So, please just-"
"I know, dammit... I have to cool it."
The most logical thing to do at a time like this was to stay calm. There was no point letting frustration take over. That being said, Haruki put the teacup down on the table and took a deep breath before responding to Seteth, who was waiting for him to calm down.
"Forgive me, Seteth… I didn't mean to lose my cool like that."
"Aaand?"
"And I apologize for breaking your cup. It wasn't my intention."
"...I see," Seteth said flatly. "Please, pay no mind to the cup. It can be replaced. As for your concerns, they are warranted."
"It… It's hard to take in due to the fact that we wouldn't be able to afford it."
"Yes, we understand the price for attending the Officer's Academy is hefty. However, we have taken such a problem into account, and we have already thought of a solution to help you relieve the financial burden."
"Hm?" Haruki immediately perked up, no doubt the topic of financial aid garnered his attention.
"The Archbishop and I unanimously agree that we ought to repay your mercenary company in helping our students. In your case, we had immediately made measures to help you financially in the form of a scholarship."
"A scholarship? You could've at least mentioned that from the start."
"I was. However, the opportunity did not present itself, given your sudden outburst."
"...Oh..."
"The Seiros' Chosen Scholarship is full-ride, meaning that it will cover all expenses. It is given to exemplary individuals who demonstrate qualities that align with the teachings of the Church."
"In case you didn't already know, I am not a devout believer of the faith, nor do I have any plans to" Haruki retorted. "How exactly was I qualified for this?"
"Is it not enough to protect those in their time of need?"
"..."
"Your selflessness to protect the students, as well as the people of Remire Village, is indeed a quality that aligns with our teachings and thus makes you qualified for the scholarship."
"I…."
"...I wasn't being selfless…"
That was what Haruki wanted to say, but he stilled his tongue at the last moment.
"Of course, there are other requirements that need to be met before we can officially grant you it. You already have a referral in the form of Knight Alois. Next is to complete the entrance exam and obtain high marks to put you among the Upper Echelon."
"Okay… so I just need to pass the test and I can get the scholarship. Sounds simple enough."
"To put it simply, yes," Seteth nodded and then furrowed his brow. "However, there is but one more requirement."
"There's more?"
"Yes. After taking the entrance exam and placing among the Upper Echelon, accepting the scholarship will entirely be based on your decision."
"What do you mean?"
"In order to accept and maintain the scholarship throughout the length of the school year, you must…"
The meeting with Seteth had concluded. But Haruki seemed to have more weight on his shoulders, rather than the other way around. And that weight felt heavier as he made his way down the stairs and back to the reception hall, and it wasn't because of the injuries.
"What a pickle this turned out to be, in the end. And you weren't even at fault," Himari said, walking at his side and looking more glum than usual. "Everything was all fine, then BOOM… That Seteth guy threw that on the table."
Everything had gone smoothly, no doubt. The exam, which was to be taken tomorrow, should not be a problem. When it came to paying for his schooling, the scholarship was enticing. Attending this school fully paid? Only a fool would pass up such an opportunity; that was only if the requirements of obtaining were so… restricting.
"Crap…" Haruki stopped to catch his breath, exhausted from the meeting and the treck back downstairs. "...What a damn pain."
"Well, look who it is."
"Hm?" A familiar voice returned him to the present. In front of him was none other than the Blade Breaker himself.
"..."
"..."
"...Bastard."
"Hey now, is that any way to talk to your old man?"
"It is when it's justified," Haruki's frown grew deeper. "Don't think I don't know about your little secret."
"Hrm… I had a feeling that word got to you by now."
"When everyone is making such a big deal about it, yeah."
"Look kid," Jeralt rubbed the back of his head, seemingly feeling uncomfortable. "I know you probably want to know everything, but-"
"I do want to learn everything," Haruki cut him off. "And I'm going to make you spill everything right here right now."
"..."
"Tsk… Or at least that's what I want to do. but I hate to say it, now really isn't the time."
"Huh?" Jeralt wasn't expecting that kind of response. "It's not like you to give up that easily."
"Well, my priorities are elsewhere, right now."
"Hmm… Judging by the long face, it must be something serious. Need to talk about it?"
"That…"
"It's up to you, Haruki," sighed out of exhaustion. "But if you want my opinion, it's one thing to keep me hidden, but you have no reason to hide something like this from him. If anything, he's probably the best person to talk to.
Haruki pondered about it for a moment. He agreed that this matter was rather trivial and less complicated than the Himari situation. However, he still didn't want him to worry about it. Even so, it didn't seem like there was a way for the old man not to get involved in this.
That being said, even though he didn't look like it, he was a good listener. So, there was a possibility for him to have some suggestions. And above all else, Haruki knew that he could trust Jeralt with these kinds of things.
"You have time, old man?"
"For you, all the time in the world."
Agreeing, the two sat at one of the benches in the hall, and Haruki proceeded to tell Jeralt about the meeting with Seteth. He did not go into detail about the first half of the meeting. He was more focused on explaining the cost of studying in the Academy, and especially the scholarship Seteth offered. This included the obligations that come with having it.
"Hrm…"
But after hearing his son's explanation, Jeralt became rather discouraged. He knitted his brow and frowned deeply.
"So, the Church is handing you an opportunity to attend such an expensive school for free with this Seiros' Chosen Scholarship. But in exchange… they want you to join the Knights of Seiros after you graduate"
Haruki nodded.
"Logically speaking, choosing to accept the scholarship would be my best choice. I attend the school without the need to worry about the money that we don't have."
"True enough. As much as I hate to admit it, we hardly have enough to afford it. But maybe with my new job and maybe even Byleth's..."
"At best, we'd barely scrape by. But I wouldn't want that from you to begin with."
"Why not?"
"Because you two have done so much for me already. I can't allow you to shoulder any more of my burdens. Got that?"
"...If that's what you want," Jeralt granted his request, knowing an attempt to argue about it would lead to nowhere. Haruki was stubborn like that. "But I take it that money isn't the only problem."
Haruki nodded. "I have many mixed feelings about joining the Knights of Seiros."
"Mixed feelings?"
"I mean if you think about it, why would I be willing to join an order I hardly know or believe in?"
He needed to bend a lot already by accepting the role of a student. But accepting to join the Knights on top of that?
"This all seems absurd to me," he sighed. "The only thing I really know is that these knights live and breathe the teachings of Seiros. I've never been devoted to that kind of stuff, and I doubt I ever will. And it doesn't look too promising knowing that a certain someone left the order entirely."
"Well… you're not wrong."
"Hmph… As it stands, I wouldn't accept the offer… But…"
"You don't have the luxury to say 'no", right?"
"Pretty much," he sighed again, raising his head and pensively gazed up at the chandeliers high above the hall. "Seteth understood that this was a big decision, so he told me to think hard on it and to have an answer ready for him and the Archbishop in two days."
"Two days," Jeralt mused.
"The thing is, I've already been thinking long and hard about it, and so far, all my thoughts lead to the same conclusion." Haruki looked straight into his father's eyes.
"Accepting the offer is the most logical choice, but I have this feeling it isn't the right choice."
This was the underlying dilemma Haruki was breaking his head about: a battle between his mind and his heart. His mind knew what he must do, but his heart was just not committed, similar to when he decided to to be a student or when he decided to give the other two bun pastries away to that girl. Of course this situation was more serious than tasty pastries.
Should he decline, he would be burdened over the fact he made a poor choice when a better one was right at his fingertips. But should he accept, it would place a heavy burden in his heart knowing that the end result would be something he never wanted.
No matter how he looked at it, there was not right answer.
"Old man?"
"Yeah?"
"Tell me… What would you do?"
Haruki did not wish for the old man to help him directly, but some pieces of advice to help him make a decision did not hurt.
"Hmmm…" Jeralt thought about the question before answering. "If it were me… I wouldn't take the offer."
" …Why?"
"Because I know better than to not listen to my gut-feeling?"
"Gut feeling?"
"I know you're one who uses your head for nearly everything, so you think doing such a thing would be senseless. But you know, using your head is important, but trusting your gut is just as important. If you feel something is off, you should never ignore it."
Relying on intuition.
Gut-feeling.
That was Jeralt's way of handling things with no clear answers. It had worked for him a hundred times over, but for Haruki…
"I don't know old man… The last time I trusted my gut-feeling, everything went to hell… Remember?"'
The boy had never been as fortunate.
"Kid… What happened that day wasn't your fault."
"...I truly wish I could believe that."
Haruki and Jeralt sat quietly across from each other, both remembering the same exact day three years ago. Whenever that happened, Jeralt always tried to assure Haruki he was not to blame for what happened, but Haruki just could never accept that. Nor could he not forget it.
No… it was not because he couldn't; he did not want to forget that day. To serve as his reminder. A reminder of what could unfold if such a problem happened again.
"So," Haruki spoke first, coming back to the topic at hand, "Say I went for it, regardless of my gut feeling, what then?"
"If that's the case, then that's when you'll need to use your head even more."
"...More?"
"It's just like in the battlefield, Haru. Things often never go as well as you might expect, so tough decisions have to be made. That's why you have to be adaptable and plan ahead so that you get through it with yourself still intact."
"like a countermeasure?"
"Exactly. Since you already don't feel right about this, doing so will be important now more than ever. When that happens, I'm sure that noggin of yours can handle it."
"..."
Planning ahead. Someone had told him something similar. And that certain someone was none other than the mysterious girl sitting next to him.
"My my. Who would have thought I had to be reminded about my own advice. But he's right. We can't fret over the outcome now, but we have to plan ahead for it. All you have to do now is to pick your poison."
"Pick my poison, eh?"
"Hm? You say something, kid?"
"It's nothing," Haruki shook his head, ignoring the fact that he spoke his mind again. "Anyway, you gave me a lot to think about, old man. It was… helpful."
"Well, I'm glad I could be of some use to you," Jeralt replied. "Now, all you have to do is come to a decision. Remember, you still have time, so keep taking the time to think long and hard, alright?"
"I will… and you know, I think I already thought of a countermeasure should I accept."
"Well that was quick, let's hear it."
"If I do end up accepting the scholarship, I could just pull the same stunt you did and disappear from the face of Fodlan. Never to be seen again… Ever.
"..."
"..."
"Joking, of course."
"HA! Geez kid. If that's your idea of a joke, you could at least crack a smile while you do it."
"Please don't say something so ridiculous," Haruki gave him a deadpan look. "But speaking of your stunt, I guess your help was enough for me to overlook your little secret for the time being. Consider yourself fortunate… and warned."
"Er… Right."
"But can I ask just one thing about it, for now?"
"Oh? What is it?"
"Was your… gut-feeling the reason you left the Knights of Seiros?"
"...Yeah… You can say that."
"..."
"..."
"I see…" Haruki nodded, satisfied with the answer for the time being. "Old man, I know you don't do things without a reason, so I believe there's a reason you haven't told us about your past. But I also believe that By and I deserve to know, so… just promise me you'll tell us one day."
"You have my word, kid."
Agreeing with a smile, Jeralt raised his hand, his left one rather than his right like he usually did when they shook hands. While curious, Haruki didn't think much of it and raised his own left hand. Their hands intertwined, and thus sealed their promise, that one day Jeralt will finally share his past with him. It will be a day that Haruki was eager to see soon.
Now that their promise was sealed, Haruki was about to release his hand… But Jeralt suddenly tightened his grip.
"I know you have a lot to think about, but before you go, there's something I want to ask," Jeralt then snatched Haruki's wrist and forced him to open his hand, fully revealing his palm. "What's with the blue stains on your bandages?"
"..."
"..."
What did father say about eating too many sweets?
He could hear Byleth's warning clear as day. And he assured him that Jeralt wouldn't find out. But after what had transpired during the meeting, the stains from the bun pastry were the least of his worries. And now…
He grew too careless
He'd been caught red-handed. Maybe in this case... blue-handed.
"Ooooh boy. You're so busted."
"Shut it!"
"Kid?" Jeralt, like the father he should be, was now furrowing his brow in a scolding manner.
"Well…" he averted his gaze as he tried to come up with an excuse. But he knew very well that no matter what lie he said, Jeralt would notice.
"...You."
Then he heard her. No, he sensed her even before then. The same hostile malice over a plate of bun pastries.
Slowly turning his head around, he saw her. Of course it had to be her. That fury inside her small frame was unmistakable. Now, however, it looked like her rage was oozing out, manifesting as… dark magic around her.
"Um… New friend of yours?" Jeralt asked, looking bewildered at the sight happening before him.
"No… she isn't."
"Hmph! As I'd be friends with a thief."
"Thief? What's she talking about?"
"No idea."
"Don't play coy with me!" she pointed a finger directly at Haruki's jelly-covered hand. "The evidence is clearly there."
"..."
"Wait, don't tell me you took something from this kid."
"kid?" The girl immediately glared at Jeralt, undeterred over the fact that she was speaking in such a manner to none other than the Blade Breaker. "I'll have you know that I'm not a child. So I ask you to refrain from calling me as such."
"Um… right, sorry about that," Jeralt, the Blade Breaker, actually apologized. "Anyway, Haru, did you really steal something from the… young lady?"
"I wouldn't call it stealing if something's available for anyone to take," Haruki retorted, still glaring at the girl. "It was a 'first come, first serve' situation. I just happened to get the pastry first."
"And I told you already, I got to it first!"
"My hand was already on the plate when you tried grabbing it."
"What preposterous observation. Clearly mine was there much earlier than yours."
"Now that is a preposterous observation. You should probably get your eyes checked if you really believe that."
"That's laughable coming from someone with one functioning eye."
"...Who said I need both to see through your bullshit?"
"Alright, Haru," Jeralt tightened his grip on Haruki's wrist even more. "You know better not to use vulgar language in front of someone."
"Tsk… Taking her side now?"
"No, simply stating common sense. Anyway, I now have an idea of why you have these stains. In that case…" Jeralt let go of Haruki before standing up from the bench and taking his leave.
"Old man?" Haruki stared at the old man, surprised by his sudden departure.
"You're on your own, kid," Jeralt simply said without as much as looking back. "You know better than to overeat on sweets. Fixing your mess with the young lady is your punishment this time around."
"Eeeeeh?"
"But before I go, one last word of advice," he stopped for a moment. "I said this to Byleth already, but the same applies to you. Be on your guard, especially when around Lady Rhea."
"Huh?"
Haruki did not expect the sudden warning from Jeralt, especially when it pertained to the Archbishop. Of course, Haruki understood that Jeralt and Rhea knew each other during the former's time as the captain of the knights. But what could have happened so that he, of all people, would be wary of her?
Right now, there wasn't much to go off of to get a logical answer. Regardless…
"...Understood."
Whether there was a logical reason, or it was simply just his gut feeling, a warning from Jeralt was something he could not ignore.
"Good," Jeralt said, sounding offly relieved. "Anyways, good luck with your new friend. Seems like you'll need it."
With those last words, Jeralt waved goodbye, leaving Haruki to fend for himself.
"Tsk… As if I have any luck to begin with."
Turning back around, he saw the girl still glaring at him. If looks could kill, he'd be dead ten times over.
Glancing to his left and right, he noticed that Himari was nowhere to be seen. The only other place she could be was in his head.
"From the words of the great Jeralt the Blade Breaker. You're on your own, kid? Wake me up when you fix the mess you made 'kay?"
Her echoing voice all but confirmed that.
"Sleeping at a time like this. Some companion you are."
"I can't hear youuu. I'm sleepiiiing."
"Ahem!" the girl cleared her throat to get Haruki's reluctant attention. She seemed to be getting angrier by the second.
"You can't be serious."
He has more pressing matters to attend to, but rather not leave things as it is. It was bound to cause more problems in the future. So, he needed to smooth this over with the girl before she decided to unleash magic on him.
"Alright… Let's just get this over with."
"Good grief."
Jeralt let out a loud sigh as he made his way up the stairs to the second floor. Since coming to Garreg Mach, his mind has been flooded with concerns. There was his new job as an assistant to the current captain of the Knights of Seiros. The man was already up in age and was on the verge of retirement, so much of his responsibilities as captain fell onto Jeralt. At this point, it would be a matter of time before he would have to reprise his role that he abandoned long ago.
His past was also another concern. Now that it was made clear, Byleth and Haruki would naturally be drawn to it; the latter being especially curious. He knew that he would need to come clean eventually, especially now that he promised Haruki. Jeralt did feel incredibly guilty keeping it to himself, but if it was to keep those two safe, he wouldn't say a word… not until he figured out what Rhea wanted.
That Archbishop… he wondered what that woman was thinking.
She could have chosen anyone much more qualified to be a professor. Even Jeralt himself would have been a more understandable choice. But Byleth?
Jeralt didn't have a clue why she would appoint the kid as a professor the way she did. That was why he warned him to be on his guard, especially around the Archbishop. It was the same warning he gave to Haruki after he explained his own situation.
Compared to Byleth being appointed as professor, Haruki being admitted to the Officer's Academy as a student was something Jeralt wasn't entirely concerned about. The most he was worried about was how the kid would behave with others his age, considering how he lived with the mercenaries and beforehand. It was that and how we would fare given how hard it was to earn his trust.
But the sudden offer of a scholarship that was practically forcing him into the Knights as well? Now, that was something that concerned him.
Himself returning to the Knights, Byleth's sudden appointment, and Haruki's offer with no means to say 'no.' It could be seen as just a coincidence, or perhaps a way to keep the family together in one spot. But to Jeralt, it felt as though Rhea was trapping them. But for what purpose?
That concern was all the more reason to tell his kids to be on their guard.
Knowing them, they are able to do that without a problem.
…But as their father, he can't help but still worry about them.
Byleth was always good at completing any job to the letter. However, looking out after a bunch of noble brats may be too much for even him to handle. All Jeralt could do in that regard was keep a close eye on him to see how he's faring.
As for Haruki, his concerns about the scholarship were already testing him. The boy already had a feeling something was off about it - rightfully so - but it seemed like he was still going to accept it. However, Jeralt sadly believed that the boy's stress was the result of his own thought process. If anything, his problems could be resolved if he asked for help. But Haruki had a very bad tendency to shoulder too much on his own.
"Sorry, kid."
That is why Jeralt decided to do something about it, with or without Haruki's blessing.
Jeralt arrived on the second floor and laid eyes on the doors leading to the Audience Chamber, where Rhea was likely located. His goal now was to talk to her and see what other options were there that didn't involve Haruki joining the Knights. If the only option is to pay out of their own pockets… so be it.
"Hate me all you want, but I'm not letting you struggle on your own."
Just then, he noticed something from the corner of his eye just before he was about to face the chamber doors. Taking a quick glance in that direction, he saw someone walking toward him from across the hall.
Jeralt may have met them just the other day, but he recognized them as one of this year's house leaders, who soon noticed him and greeted him with a smile and a wave
"Hmmm…"
Then… a sudden idea came to him. One that could solve the Haruki dilemma. Paying with their own funds would be rough on them, there was no question about that. And, the Church may have offered him an enticing scholarship…
But who was to say those were the only ways to pay through school?
We've all been their: Having to make tough choices. But we can always find someone that can help make that choice easier. With some parental advice from Jeralt, Haruki is now ready to make a choice on the next chapter, if he manages to get through his encounter with a certain someone unscathed. But, hmmm... What could the Blade Breaker be planning behind the scenes?
This was a longer chapter than originally planned, but as always, thank you for reading, and I'll see you all next time!
