Ch. 8: The Vault

It was quiet and the guards were killed on sight. At a moment, they thought about collecting their bodies for the boss, but the boss didn't want the bodies.

They wanted something else completely different.

Their hands wandered until it touched the switch, the door opened, and they stepped into the elevator.

The goal close at hand.

Maura awoke to the sound of movement, prompting her to turn her head to see Jane still snuggled against her. The blonde smiled widely then gave the detective a kiss on the top of her head before she slipped out of the bed. Placing her robe, she traveled downstairs to the sight of Danielle cooking in the kitchen.

A sense of calm despite the day's trials and tribulations and yet, Danielle seemed to act as if the day never occurred. I wonder how many days she repeated in this similar way, the doctor pondered curiously. She walked further into the kitchen and cleared her throat to notify Dani that there was someone else.

The detective turned around. "Morning Maura," the detective greeted, keeping the pan on the stove then turning around to place a plate in front of Maura. "Did you sleep well?"

"I did. Thank you." Dani then turned around and placed the omelet on her plate. Maura's eyes widened in surprise for there wasn't an unhealthy amount of meat which is something Jane would enjoy. Instead, the detective made an omelet filled with veggies then slid over a small cup of coffee to the doctor. "Thank you for making all of this." Dani bowed her head then took a seat, taking a sip of her own coffee.

"I appreciate that you let me sleep in your guest room."

"You're welcome." A silence came over them and for a bit, it felt as if people were actually not there until Maura spoke once more, "You must have had the same routine for a long time?"

Dani gave a small but sad smile and the smile reflected that there was some truth behind the question. "I try not to do the same routine but, I more had to change with the times," Dani explained.

"How so?"

"For a short time, I could not wear pants in the mortal public in America as I did back in England, or at least, made them deal with it. Adam and I were both working at night; he was more hidden due to the lack of advancement for his condition while social concerns of a woman inquiring about murder investigations wasn't too sophisticated despite being raised in high society."

Maura raised an eyebrow. "You were raised in high society?"

Dani's eyes widened, realizing her slip. "Well fuck."

"Language."

"Pardon," Dani retorted simply, the British accent slipping out. "And to answer your previous question, I used to live the high society life. My family was well off, my father was a very highly regarded board member of hospital. My brother followed and I did not."

"You said you were an artist? What was your medium?"

"I used to sketch, charcoal and pencil with a side of oil painting. I stopped after…well, I stopped." Maura caught the hesitation and the hurt expression that reflected in Danielle's eyes. But the hurt faded quickly with a simple sip of coffee and a quick bite of toast. "But as I stated, changing the routine helps. You and Jane are a fresh breathe of air," Dani spoke as if nothing happened earlier.

"Thank you," Maura expressed, trying not to give away her confusion.

Suddenly, they heard footsteps approaching and looked up to see Jane entering the kitchen with a tired expression. Dani slid out of her chair and place the frying pan on the stove then began to crack some eggs. "Morning," Jane greeted softly.

"Morning."

Jane then wrapped her arms around Maura's shoulders, giving her a tight hug. Out of their chef's corner of her eyes, she noticed the small kiss Jane placed on Maura's head. Despite the small gesture, it echoed the bond between the two and it seemed that they forgot that Dani was in the room.

Perhaps, it was due to the detective's silence but with a quick clank of a plate in front of her, Jane stepped back from Maura to watch Dani place a coffee down. "Wow, you made breakfast," Jane commented as she took her seat next to Maura.

"It's a thank you for the hospitality," Dani explained. "With my injuries healed mostly, I should be able to return my apartment without Adam scolding me."

"You two are pretty tight."

"Tight…" Dani gave a confused expression then snapped her fingers, "Right, close. He and I have been close since we found him in New York in 1900. Poor man didn't even have a name back then, just the Creature."

"We?"

"Oh Doctor V-" Suddenly, Dani's phone began to ring which prompted the detective to answer it, "Stevenson."

Jane watched as Dani's calm demeanor shift quickly to a worried expression with brows furrowed. "Adam, is everything secured now…Yes, I will be down with Jane and Maura. Make the proper notifications but where's the idiot?" There was a roll of the eyes, "Yes, he's an idiot because I think he's an idiot. I told him that the security was supposed to be doubled but, nope, we ignore me and listen to Dorian…I'll be on my way."

Dani then ended the phone call. "What happened and whose an idiot," Jane inquired, prompting her to stand up from her chair.

"There were some items stolen from the Vault and I need to go now to see how bad the damage is."

"The Vault? You mean the place that holds the supernatural objects?"

"Yes, and I need to drive to the museum. Supposedly, there are a couple security guards that are dead also."

Jane and Maura stood up from their seats with Jane taking her breakfast upstairs. "Jane, don't spill your omelet in my room," Maura shouted, hearing Jane rush up the staircase.

If Maura complained about Jane's driving was too fast, she can say that she would rather deal with Jane's fast driving then Danielle's driving. It was quick and erratic, trying to push through the traffic with lights and siren despite it was only ten in the morning. The doctor held onto the seats tightly while Jane held the bar that hung from the passenger.

"Aren't you going way too fast," Jane questioned even feeling the speed being too much.

"No," Dani retorted as she made a sharp turn down the street.

With the sharp turn, they drove further down until they reached a backlot of a building. Dani then put the car in park, fast and sharp and turned off the engine swiftly before stepping out of the car and marching toward the backdoor. Jane stepped out of the car and gaining her balance back, she then opened the door for Maura.

"You okay," Jane inquired, placing her hand out for Maura to take.

Maura took it and their bodies crashed against each other. "Sorry, Jane," Maura said softly.

"It's fine."

Jane picked up Maura's medical bag and began to escort her toward the backdoor. As they pushed the door open, they could hear Danielle speaking rather loudly. "Didn't I say Dudley that you needed extra protection with the Egyptian collection?"

"Detective…"

"Don't 'Detective' me because I told you this when you gave me the file. But, of course, you went with Dorian."

"He's a lawyer."

"A sleazy one."

Jane and Maura turned the corner, passing several museum pieces until they noticed an open bookcase. They passed through the threshold to behold the sight of Adam sitting on a desk while Dani was talking to transparent individual wearing armor like a knight. He had a mustache and based on his age, he was much older, and it seemed he didn't fit in his armor too well. Dani rubbed her face in irritation and spoke once more, "If you weren't already dead, I would be kicking your ass right now."

"Now detective, that would not be necessary."

"Where's Clayton?"

"He's down at the Vault," the ghost grumbled. "Already gave me a ripping that dumb shifter…I should have been promoted first."

Dani rolled her eyes and approached the metal doors behind the desk Adam was sitting on. Jane and Maura followed behind with Maura asking, "Who was that?"

"Sir Dudley Manchester," Dani grumbled as she walked down the long hallway. "Ghost that is co-curator of the Vault but for some odd reason he wasn't."

"Suspicious," Jane questioned, trying to take in the caravan like hallway.

Adam shook his head and retorted in a low whisper, "Very annoyed. Dorian is a patron of the museum and though the Council and Nightfall are only supposed to have access to the Vault-"

"But he used persuasion," Jane retorted, understanding how sleazy Dorian acted.

Adam nodded and finally, they reached one more set of metal doors. The doors opened and they all stepped in with Dani crossing her arms in displeasure. "Wants to protect that portrait of his," Dani grumbled.

"You know Dorian has the connections," Adam added.

"Yeah, yeah."

The elevator traveled for a couple minutes and in the silence, Maura asked, "Where are we going?"

"Old subway tunnel that's been modified. During prohibition, there were issues involving some of the supernatural especially between the Lycans and the vampires. Correlating to the gang wars, Dracula and old Lycan leader, Bradley "Birdy" Trappers were at each other's throat at the time. Bodies were piling up and eventually, it reached a point where Nightfall ordered a parley. Van Helsing was in his later years, too old to deal with the quarrel so he brought his ultimatum."

"What was that?"

"Brought the very items that could kill both leaders."

"That seems so crass," Maura retorted.

"It worked," Dani shrugged. "Their fighting ended and After the mid 1930s, the Council decided that it would be best that we have the most valuable items of our world tucked away. Never to be used against each other unless pure evil emerges. It included some items such as documents, important items that need to be protected."

"So there's a reason to worry," Jane questioned.

"Depends on what was taken."

The elevator doors then opened with five familiar faces.

Clayton, Regina, Mama Lorna, Mina and Dorian were all standing by the elevator doors. Jane and Maura stepped off the elevator with Adam and Dani; Jane's eyes wandered taking in the sight of the corridor, against the walls were specific glass cases with about three to five being shattered.

With these shattered cases, there were also several bodies. "This is not good," Adam mumbled at the sight.

Dani nodded with everyone stepping closer to the others who were there.

"Mama," Adam greeted, seeing the older woman, "I didn't expect you or Regina to be here."

The older woman stepped forward, greeting Adam and Dani with hugs then looked over at Jane and Maura. "It is good to see you, Detective Rizzoli and Doctor Isles," Mama smiled widely. "I apologize for not speaking with you in person."

Maura shook the older woman's hand first. "We understand that you're very busy especially someone who is very important such as yourself," Maura assured the older woman.

"Oo…Danielle, I like this one." Maura blushed with Dani smirking and out of instinct, Jane wrapped around Maura's waist with a proud and small smile. Mama noticed the gesture but didn't give it away as she continued, "I'm glad you're both here. The matter is very serious, and we need all the support now."

"We don't need humans to handle a supernatural's problem," Dorian spat. He spun his cane and placed it out toward Dani, closing to touching her chest, "It just proves how incompetent these two are."

Jane and Maura looked at each other with apprehensive looks. Dani brought two up and pushed the cane down with a raised eyebrow. "I can easily take that from you, Dorian and shove it up your-"

"Danielle," Regina stopped, grabbing the detective's hand, and pulling her away from Dorian. Mina noticed this gesture and smirked as Dani seemed to relax under Regina's touch. The apprentice then looked at Dorian, "Walk away, Dorian."

The man puffed out his chest and walked a couple steps away. Regina then looked at Dani and removed her hand. Dani brought her hand to her pocket and cleared her throat. "I'm surprised you're here," Dani greeted softly, her body relaxing at the sight of the young apprentice.

"Mama needed to be here, and it would be best if I accompany her especially with the seriousness of the situation," Regina retorted with a small hand gesture toward the broken cases.

"Speaking of the situation," Dani stepped forward, standing next to her. "I thought the cases were magic sealed."

"They were," the detective felt a chill go up her spine, hearing the much thicker British accent. A hand traveled along from one shoulder to the other with Dani following the trail to see Mina. She gave a playful smirk to the detective, keeping her hand placed on Dani's shoulder as she greeted, "Hello Danielle."

"Ms. Harker," Dani tensed.

"Miss Coldwell," Mina greeted

Regina felt her face becoming red but released her breath when Dani stepped away, her face just as red. She cleared her throat and asked quietly, "Mina, why are you here?"

Mina gave a coy smile then retorted, "Like you, I'm here due to this…misfortune."

"Misfortune," Maura stated aloud, hearing as she stepped over to the first body that laid in the middle of the pathway. She looked down at the body, identifying the gender as male then took in the sight of wounds. There was a bullet wound entering the forehead and exiting out of the back of the head.

"All the bodies are exactly the same, Doctor," Clayton informed.

"I still like to examine each one and I believe that we can arrange transport."

Adam nodded, "I'll go ahead and make the call for a couple more transport vans."

"Actually Adam, it would be best if you do that afterwards," Clayton retorted.

Dani, Jane, Maura, and Adam gave confused expressions as Clayton gestured toward the shattered boxes. The group moved closer and Dani took in the sight as the curator spoke, "There's about four items are missing."

"Which ones?"

"Doctor Van Helsing's notes, The Book of the Dead, The Black Magic Book, and…Doctor Victor Frankenstein's journal."

Adam frowned and Dani exhaled a shaky breath then she glanced back at her partner. Adam turned and began to walk away. "Adam," Dani called out, but the Creation had already entered the elevator, disappearing. Dani then looked back at Regina, Mama, and Mina and pointed out, "That's why you are all here." Her eyes darted toward Mina and crossed her arms, "You're concern comes from Dracula."

"My husband's concern is nothing but making sure about how much of Van Helsing's files disappeared, sweetheart."

"Then go downstairs to the file room, Miss Harker."

"Danielle, darling, the key is missing as you can see by the shattered glass. Also you know the two downstairs would not let me enter and they fear me."

"With reason but, tell Dracula to keep his nose out of it." She then walked away from the group, which prompted Jane and Maura to follow closely behind. They stepped over each body that laid on the ground, counting about five to six bodies, each with a bullet in their heads. "Were these items that important," Jane questioned.

"You want to know how to control Dracula and even kill him," Dani questioned.

How many secrets that could be revealed in single file?

"Adam left due to Doctor Frankenstein's journal," Maura pointed out.

"Did you just guess," Jane mumbled.

"Connected the dots."

They reached the shattered glass; Danielle pulled out some crime scene gloves, placing them on and picked up the piece of glass, taking in the sight. "Someone had something powerful to shatter the glass," Dani observed.

"Like what," Jane crouched down.

"That I don't know."

"What's important about the other two items? The Black Magic Book and the Book of the Dead," Jane inquired, trying to understand why these objects were taken and it cost so many lives.

"The Book of the Dead is an Egyptian scripture. It just came in from Egypt," Maura informed her best friend. "Supposedly, it holds rituals of how to prepare the bodies for mummification."

"Not just that," Dani cut in. "It's also holds the properties of bringing life back to the dead."

"Are they truly alive?"

"Yes. The soul leaves the physical world, leaving the empty vessel. To bring life back is to have the body intact then read from the book to call the soul back."

"The Black Magic Book?"

"The name says it all, black magic spells from the darkest regions. Only few dare touch the book such as the Twisted Ones and Mama."

"Ok," Jane crossed her arms over her chest, "these items are bad out in the world. But Frankenstein's journal and Van Helsing's files?"

"I never read Frankenstein's journal. To honor Adam's creation and his humanity. Also the files are not necessarily here."

"What was," Maura asked.

"The key to file room which means we need to go down one more floor."

Jane and Maura gave curious expression but followed Dani close behind who pushed pass Dorian. The man glared at the detective and stated, "Hopefully, those idiots down below are not too bruised up."

Dani ignored the comment then she felt someone grab her hand prompting her to look up. Mina gazed at her and moved closer, whispering softly in her ear. Jane and Maura gave shocked expressions then looked at Regina who seemed a bit flush. Dani slipped her hand out and continued her walk until she reached Regina who was looking away.

Mama shuffled, feeling the tension, and asked quickly, "Regina told me that you need me to do a tracking spell on a medallion due to it involving the Twisted Ones." Dani looked at from Regina and nodded, prompting the older woman to clap, "Well, I will expect you at my shop later this evening."

Regina's head snapped up, "Mama, don't you think that's a bit late?"

"I will be fine," the older woman assured then started to walk toward the elevator with Regina trailing behind. "I expect you and Detective Rizzoli there, Danielle."

Jane pointed to herself but shrugged in agreement. The two approached the elevator, entering then Clayton, Dorian and Mina entered. Dani raising her hand to give a weak wave, hoping Regina would see it as a wave toward her. However, both Mina and Regina gave a small waves with Mina giving a smirk and Regina showing a hurt expression with the doors closing.

With the doors closed, Dani huffed then looked at Jane and Maura. "Down we go," she gestured.

R&I

"I have all of the ingredients; I will do my experiment tonight."

"Henry, using yourself as your test subject is not a wise choice."

"They will not give me my own subject, Danielle. I need to do this. For Father."

"I'm not going to watch you get yourself killed, Henry."

"Dani?"

"Yeah?"

I'm going for it, Jane bit her lip then asked, "So that exchange with Dracula's wife? What was that about?"

"Nosey much?"

"Come on, she was like coming on to you hard."

"Jane," Maura scolded, nudging Jane's foot with her own. Jane gave a face and Maura rolled her eyes and retorted, "It did seem that Miss Harker was very friendly."

"Friendly? She was attaching herself like a cheap suit."

"Hey, she's a lady and what happened with Mina and I is something in the past."

"But it was something."

BING!

Eyes darted up as the doors opened to the basement. The three women stepped off the elevator and approached the office door that stood in front of them. Dani knocked on the door and a sniffling voice spoke from behind the door, "Enter."

"Who or what was that," Jane questioned.

"Reinfield."

Dani opened the door to reveal a room filled with many, many file cabinets but half of them were open with some files on the floor. Hunched over was a white dressed shirt man with high water jeans, reminding Jane of Urkel but, this man was no Urkel. His head popped up slowly to reveal large exaggerated dark brown eyes with a wide toothy grin. His fingers then traveled along the desk, tapping quickly as he spoke with his sniffling voice, "Detective, I…haven't seen you in a long time and…you bring guests."

Maura gripped Jane's hand and moved a bit closer as the man's eyes darted once more from Dani to her and Jane. "Reinfield, where's Igor," Dani inquired as she stepped over some files slowly.

"Igor…is sleeping under desk."

Dani peered under to see a curled body. With a swift kick to the desk then there was a loud thud and a loud 'ow,' Igor popped up from under the desk, rubbing his head. His eyes darted toward Reinfield then saw Dani, Jane, and Maura. "Guests in the record room…Detective! You are here," Igor shouted.

Jane leaned in, "Are they always like this?"

"They don't get guests often." Dani then went into her pocket, pulling out some candy. Maura and Jane noticed that the candy had something in the center as Dani tossed it to Reinfield who jumped up quickly. "We're here for all of Van Helsing's files including the lock cabinet," Dani stated.

"The lock cabinet is no longer locked, Detective," Igor retorted.

"I know that, Igor. I hope you would have a log of what's missing so far."

"We…haven't started, Detective," Reinfield retorted as he opened the wrapper. "Ah, a chocolate covered tarantula!" Jane gave a face of disgust while Maura seemed more apprehensive as Reinfield shoved it in his mouth and spoke, "You…are so…kind…Detective."

"Reinfield, don't speak with your mouth full especially with bugs in your mouth." Dani then looked at Igor, "My friends and I will look at the major important ones then you and Reinfield can send me the rest of the missing files."

Igor bowed, letting the three women walk pass to the door behind the desk. As they opened the door, there was one desk in the center of the room and in back corner was a file cabinet that had all its drawers open. Dani let Jane and Maura enter first then she did, closing the door behind them.

"What was all that about," Jane asked.

"Jane," Maura admonished. At times, Maura loved Jane's bold moves but there are times where she did not believe in the importance of timing or tact.

"What? You and I just watch a dude eat a tarantula."

"A chocolate covered tarantula," Dani emphasized, taking out some crime scene gloves. "Reinfield was once Dracula's lackeys until he came here. The Council and Van Helsing agreed that due to Reinfield's…unstable nature that he works the files."

Maura crouched down, picking up the first file on the floor and asked, "Do you think it's wise to let a mentally unstable man to handle the records of so many of supernatural citizens of Boston?"

"Reinfield and Igor both lack…stability but they are equally smart. If Van Helsing appointed them, I never question it."

"You trusted him that much?"

Dani sighed but nodded, "When you have no one else, yes." A silence fell over them suddenly with Jane and Maura watching her closely. Dani then cleared her throat and gestured toward the files, "Alright, these are Van Helsing's personal files and we're just listing what's there. There should be a clipboard with some of the names."

Jane grabbed the clipboard and looked through the list. "Fuck, that's a lot," Jane stated.

"Jane," Maura admonished.

"There's about a hundred names here, Maur!"

"Then let's start, Jane. We should organize alphabetically."

"I'll deal with A- G," Dani stated.

Maura looked at Jane who shrugged. "I'll do H through O then," the detective stated.

"Leaving me with P through Z," Maura concluded.

Jane nodded and took a seat at the lone desk. Dani and Maura began to pick up some of the files and placed it on the desk.

Quietly, a couple hours went by with Jane migrating onto the desk, giving Maura the chair for her to sit. Dani rested against the filing cabinet, her eyes drifting toward the file names. She asked Igor to make two more copy of the list they had, and hunched man did it quickly. As they proceed through their lists, it became evident that specific files were missing.

Jane ran her hand over her face and let out a yawn. "Alright, I think I got most of mine done."

"As did I," Maura confirmed.

Dani glanced up from her list, "I'm still working on it but, here's what I got: Adam Frankenstein, Vladimir Dracul aka Dracula are missing."

"I have the Twisted Sisters missing as well," Maura added.

"There has to be a significance for the files being missing and the other artifacts. Why do this and kill several people by taking pieces of their bodies? None of it makes sense."

Dani stood up and placed her files on the table, placing them down. "What about you, Jane? Any files missing?"

Jane looked at her list. "Just one but, it says that they're dead."

"They took a dead person's file? Who they take?"

"It's a weird naming but its hyphened as Jekyll-Hyde."

"You're sure," Jane heard, and she nodded, assuring Dani that was the one missing.

And the plot thickens, a laugh came.

"Shut up," Dani spat with venom, feeling a twitch under her right eye.

Jane raised an eyebrow in surprise as did Maura, "Hey, you asked."

Uh oh, are we getting angry, Danielle?

"Sorry, Jane. I…just have a bad headache." She then walked toward the door and stepped out of the room. She passed Igor and Reinfield, pressing on the elevator button quickly and stepped in. Jane and Maura watched as the doors closed quickly with Jane catching Dani taking out the blue vial out of her pocket.

"What the hell just happened," Jane mumbled.

"Should we go after her?"

"I don't know but I think we have a new lead," Jane answered, raising up the list to look at the name once more.

Jekyll-Hyde.

And the plot thickens! Thanks for the great support! Be safe! Please review if you can!
