Ch. 9: The Twisted Ones
Maura opened the door to her house, she and Jane following close behind with her cell phone at her ear. "As we were leaving, Clayton informed us that he's sending security footage to us. If you can get Nina, Frankie, and Frost to go over those. Yeah, thanks Vince," Jane concluded. She then sighed and took a seat on the sofa with a loud huff.
Maura's phone then let out a notification bell. She opened the message and said to Jane, "Crane came back with the results on three Lycans that attacked us at your apartment and apparently, they are not registered in the system."
"So they don't exist?"
"On record, no."
Jane sighed, "That's definitely a dead end." Slowly, she began to rub her temples and taking deep breaths, her mind gathering what's happened in the course of the investigation. "Each victim is missing a body part or more of some sort. The Vault was broken into with two magic like books missing, one journal and a bunch of files. Something doesn't add up."
"How so Jane?"
"The people who've died are all different. A human, a Lycan, and we don't even know the identity of the dead body Dani and I found."
"That does leave us with some difficulties," Maura retorted, taking a seat next to Jane on the sofa. The doctor handed Jane a bottle of water, "You, with the team, will figure everything out."
Jane looked up at Maura and gave a small smile, "Thanks for the vote of confidence."
"If anyone can solve it, you can." Jane leaned back into the sofa with a pondering expression, prompting Maura to inquire, "What are you thinking about?"
"The one file that was stolen involving Jekyll-Hyde. I know it's a book and it involves a man turning into a monster. Can you fill in the blanks?"
"I actually think I have a copy of the novel." Maura stood up and walked toward one of her many bookshelves. She ran her fingers along the spine of the novels until she pulled a book out; she opened the book up, "Doctor Henry Jekyll was a very smart man; a lawyer and scientist. He ended up creating a serum thinking that he can separate good and evil. But with no test subject, Doctor Jekyll did the test on himself and became his version of evil, a monster known as Edward Hyde."
"What happened to Jekyll?"
"Hyde murdered many people and supposedly, he killed himself before Hyde could do more damage."
"You said supposedly?"
Maura nodded, "I'm not even sure about how true these stories are especially with what we've experienced."
"That is true. You mind if I borrow the book?"
"Sure."
Maura handed the book to Jane, who placed it on the coffee table. The doctor then sat back down next to Jane and rubbed the scar with her thumb gently. The detective squeezed Maura's hand back for the action. The feeling of comfort, Jane felt when Maura did this. No one else was ever allowed to hold Jane's hands except Maura and she pondered if it was due to the connection she felt with Maura.
It was possible.
Maura and Jane moved closer to each other. "I can't believe we are in a whole new world," Jane mumbled.
"I know the feeling," Maura nodded, resting her head on Jane's shoulder. The detective placed her head on Maura's, comfort and silence fell over them until Jane lifted her head back up to look down at Maura. The doctor turned her head to look up with their eyes locking but the doctor observed Jane's eyes darting back and forth from her lips to her eyes.
Does she feel what I feel, Maura thought as they were beginning to lean in closer to each other. As they moved closer to each other, it seemed that their lips were about to touch until the back door opened.
"Maura, I saw that you were home," Angela shouted, prompting Jane and Maura to jump apart with Maura standing up from the sofa. Jane cussed under her breath and Angela glanced over toward the sofa to see the doctor standing while her daughter buried her face in hands. "Janie, I didn't realize you were here."
Jane raised her hand, "Hi Ma. What's up?"
Angela glanced from Jane then to Maura, not noticing that the two were very close earlier. However, she did notice the blushes that were covering both women's faces. "Oh I brought food to prep for dinna tonight," Angela answered, placing the groceries on the counter.
"Thank you, Angela," Maura smiled. "I might have to ask you to keep the food in the oven because Jane and I still have an engagement for tonight."
Jane thought about it for a second then remembered that they did have plans that evening. "Right, it's for our case and we have to attend it," Jane remarked.
"Surely, Vince or Barry could handle the situation?"
"As much as we would like to have Detective Frost or Sergeant Detective Korsak but, it is vital that we go to this," Maura stated to Angela, trying to convince her since she knew that the meeting at Mama Lorna's shop was crucial.
Angela sighed, "Oh fine."
"Thanks, Ma."
Jane then felt her cell phone indicate a text, prompting her to read it immediately, "Maura, we need to go."
"You were barely here for ten minutes," Angela complained.
"It's a high-profile case, Ma. I'm sorry."
Maura nodded, picking up her bag from the table then she approached the coat rack. Jane gave Angela a quick kiss on the cheek then jogged to the front, leaving the house. The two entered Maura's car with Maura asking, "What was the text about?"
"The body was identified from the vampire's house."
"Did they identify the Lycan?"
"It just said the body at the vampire's house, so we'll see when we get down there."
The past can only fade away before everything comes alive once more. The headaches were getting worse and what used to tame it was not going to be enough. A new way needed to be done but for now, the old way is the way to survive.
The mirror that reflected everything in the small office said so much. The time that has passed, oh how time mocked everything. There was no aging, there was no change, and there was never ending pain.
It reflected the monster within.
"I need to go home."
"So soon? The sun is barely up."
"I know that, but I don't think you want anyone noticing leaving your premises either."
"You were just visiting."
"Is that we call these private rendezvous now, Lily? Visiting? I don't think visiting entails the throughs of passion and proclamations of love."
"Perhaps it does." Hands ran along the exposed back before it was covered by a button shirt. "Stay for a couple minutes, my beautiful artist."
"I will be back soon, my muse. In two days' time."
She would return home eventually. Upon opening the mansion's door, she was greeted by the butler. "Mistress, have you spoke with your brother as of late," he inquired.
"Last time, he was busy in the laboratory. Has he not stepped out for breakfast?"
"No and he sounds like he's wailing in pain."
Hearing this, she approached the door to the lab, a spot hidden behind away from many except those who were close to her dear brother. "Henry," she knocked loudly, "Henry! Are you okay?"
"Leave me alone!"
"Henry! What's wrong? Are you sick?"
"Go away, Danielle!"
A glass was thrown at the mirror causing it to shatter.
The throbbing pain in her head, the pressure that would never go.
It was coming back worse than ever.
Adam was upset about everything especially when he heard about Frankenstein's journal. The process of creating another like him, creating a life beyond unreal means. It was not only dangerous, but it brought feelings that Adam never wanted to feel again.
Sadness and anger; anger for his creation and his creator and sadness for the loss of his beautiful Elisabeth. However, it shouldn't affect his job especially leaving Dani and the team hanging. He owed Dani his life when she helped him in New York so many years ago.
1915 New York
He had been on the run for so many years that he traveled through Europe and the Artic, traveling through Canada. He went through Canada to reach New York and the great city was definitely overwhelming.
He hid away to make sure that no one would see his grotesque nature with a hood and keeping his head low. He began to beg in the streets and there were days that he was fortunate enough to eat so he thanks the Lord each night in prayer, hoping something would come.
Unfortunately, his cover was blown by an obnoxious man one night. A rich man he was and all he did was kick Adam back, causing the man to reveal his affliction. At the sight, the man shouted for the police saying that this beggar stole but, in honesty, he wanted it face to be taken away.
Adam ran immediately, climbing on rooftops as best as possible. He hoped that he would hide from his pursuers until he reached a dead end. The police took him into to custody and they gasped in horror of his face. They threw him into the cell and even stated that they were having doctors come to look at him.
He was an animal in a cage for display.
That was until he heard a voice. An older man spoke first as he greeted in his low, gravelly voice, "I've come to see your prisoner."
"You mean ugly in cell two? And who are you and whose your…"
"Assistant. Pardon his bowing of head, he doesn't like to make eye contact but I'm Doctor Van Helsing."
"It does need a doctor, but I doubt you can help it."
"We will see, officer. I will have my assistant evaluate first. If you may, I'm going to step out for a quick smoke on my pipe."
"Take your time."
He listened to the footsteps approaching until he heard them stop and the door opened. The supposed assistant walked into the cell then the officer asked, "You want the door closed?"
There was a grunt from the assistant and the door closed, leaving Adam with the assistant. Adam lifted his eyes up, "You going to cut me open? Experiment on my body?"
"Actually, that would be a bit harsh when this is a rescue," a female voice came. The bowler hat was removed to show the tied-up hair and a young woman. She glanced back quickly then took a set of lockpicks and crouched down to the chains. "Name's Danielle Stevenson, at your service," she introduced.
"A rescue?"
"Well yes. I don't think one of our own should be treated like this."
"Our own? How are you like me?"
"We'll explain everything when we get you out of here."
"And how you going to do that?"
"You'll see."
"Stevenson, is the patient ready?"
"Yes sir," Stevenson lowered her voice, placing her hat back on. The door opened and Doctor Van Helsing came in with a large burley officer.
The officer approached while Stevenson stepped behind him while Van Helsing stepped forward with the officer. "Officer, I would like you unlock his shackles," the doctor spoke.
"I don't think that's wise."
"Please."
"It's your death." The officer crouched down and immediately, he noticed that both were unlock and was about to speak until Stevenson stabbed the officer in the neck with a syringe. He cried out but Doctor Van Helsing seemed to muzzle him as the officer dropped to the ground, passing out.
"Quickly, get dress," Van Helsing said, gesturing for Adam to take the man's uniform.
It didn't take long and the three walked out of the cell, closing it behind them and they began to walk with the desk officer asking, "You done already?"
"Yes, have a good day."
Quickly, they entered their carriage and left the police station, making sure they reached their boat and leave for Boston.
It was a start of a new chapter for Adam.
That was why he was at Danielle's apartment, unlike he, who went back to the Nightfall HQ, Dani disappeared to her apartment and stayed there. All contact had been silent, leading to Adam to be at the door and hearing the loud crash.
"Dani," Adam called out, opening the front door. He then heard low mumbles as Dani was talking with someone causing him to walk down the hallway. As he walked, it seemed like he could hear two voices going back and forth with each other in Dani's office. She doesn't let anyone in her office, not even me, he thought as he moved closer to the door.
"You cannot ignore me forever," one voice spoke in a low tone. "I am your-"
"You are nothing."
"I am not nothing-"
"You are nothing and that's it."
"What the hell," Adam mumbled and knocked on the door quickly. "Dani, are you okay?"
There was a shuffle of the feet and the door opened to reveal Dani's pale face. She stepped out of the room, her face looking pale and her eyes seemed to be blood red or copper like brown as if the color of her irises were changing as she stood before him. Her white t-shirt seemed to be soaked with sweat, making him wonder if she was catching a cold or something.
"Adam, what are you doing here," Dani questioned.
Never had he ever looked into his partner's office but seeing her appearance, he was concern. "I heard that you left the Vault in a rush. People said you said you looked distress," Adam explained as Dani stepped out of the room, closing the door behind her. She smoothed her shirt and pushed back her hair prompting to ask, "Dani, are you okay?"
"I am, Adam. Just a horrible headache." She took in deep breath, closing her eyes then reopening them with Adam noticing that her irises were back to their normal dark brown eyes. "Now is there a reason why you're here?"
"Checking on you and there's been a notification about the body you found. It's been identified."
Dani nodded, walking down the hallway to the living room. She grabbed her jacket, placing it on then she glanced back at Adam, "How are you doing?"
"I've...I've been better."
"We'll figure this out."
Adam nodded and approached the door. As he opened the door, he noticed that in Dani's hand were two blue vials. He watched as she opened them and drank both, prompting him to ask, "Is that too much?"
"Nah, it's meant to help my headache."
"Alright. Maybe you should see a doctor about those?"
Dani gave a weak, sad smile, "I will."
R&I
Jane and Maura pulled up to the warehouse the same time as Adam and Dani. Jane watched as Adam and Dani stepped out of the car, prompting Jane to open the door, and greeted, "Hey you two!"
Dani and Adam turned to see Jane and Maura stepping out of the car, prompting them to walk over. "Hey Dani, Adam," Jane greeted, "how you are guys feeling?"
Adam looked at Dani then back at the two other women and retorted, "We've been better."
"Did Dani update you on what we found?"
"Yeah, it's a bit concerning that my file is missing. But it's bad that the other ones are missing."
"And Jekyll/Hyde one?"
"Never heard of that one. Must have been Van Helsing who put that file in before he passed away," Adam stated as they were walking to the entrance of warehouse.
They walked to the elevator, taking it down to the morgue as the doors opened. Doctor Crane and Doctor Harding were waiting by the body parts that were covered by a white sheet. "So what do we got," Dani inquired tiredly.
"Well the body part was obviously was the torso. His identity happens to be an interesting change of our normal activities," Doctor Crane expressed
Jane gave a confused expression as if she misheard the crane like man. "Um…"
"So there's a change up from type of victim? Not a human or Lycan," Dani continued, ignoring Jane's expression.
"Yes, very much so," Crane answered with a nod. He pulled back the sheet, "I think you'll recognize the signs of an incubus, detectives."
"An incubus," Adam stated. He looked at Jane and Maura and continued, "It's a rarity to see them out and about."
As they stepped forward the doctor opened the eyes and gestured for the detectives to look. Dani peered over, observing the eyes, "They're dilated."
Trying to understand everything, Jane asked, "A succubus? What's so important about dilated eyes?"
"An incubus is a creature that likes to have sexual activity to keep up with their lifeforce. If they don't control their hunger properly, it can lead to dire circumstances," Crane explained. "He died in coitus."
Jane blushed, "He died during sex?"
"That is what coitus means, Jane. You know that," Maura pointed out, having not notice Jane's blush.
"His eyes being dilated shows that he was draining energy from his sexual partner. Answers how he got the nice hit on the head," Harding explained. He made the gesture of hitting the head then continued, "It was an instant death."
"But they just took the torso," Jane pondered.
"Yes detective."
"Fingerprints," Dani questioned.
"He's in the system. He's been missing for a bit according to some friends as stated by Detective Holiday. Name's Pablo Hopper, twenty-five years old."
"But it doesn't give us much to go on," Dani stated. "Doesn't answer or connect to the previous murders except the missing body parts or the Vault being broken into."
"I apologize, Detective. I know it's not the exactly what you wanted to here," Crane bowed his head.
"It's fine, Doc."
The three detectives and Maura stepped onto the elevator, returning to the squad room where they were greeted by the sight of Dracula standing by Adam's desk with Mina. At the sight, Dani wanted to sink into the ground and let the underworld eat her alive. Adam glanced over his shoulder, "Want me to hide you?"
"Detective Stevenson," Dracula called, prompting the detective to stand full attention.
"Too late," Dani mumbled as she stepped off the elevator.
Jane and Maura stepped with Adam staying back until Dracula looked up from Dani who had approached and gave a quick bow to call out, "Detective Rizzoli, I would like to speak to you as well."
Jane rubbed her chin but reluctantly approached. As she stood before the vampire, she glanced at Dani who gestured to give a nod. The detective sighed and bowed her head then spoke, "How can I help you, sir?"
"I want to know if you made any progress?"
"We're working diligently. It takes time."
"Time is something we don't have, Detective." The dark eyes darted to Dani which prompted the detective to straighten her spine as Dracula spoke, "Danielle, maybe you should inform the detective here about how I want more efficiency so we can assure the people. I plan to have a masquerade ball."
"This killer is willing to kill, and you plan to put most of the supernatural community in their line of sight," Adam scoffed.
"Someone has to keep the peace, Frankenstein."
"Don't call me that," Adam gritted.
"It doesn't work like that, Vladimir," Dani said calmly. "We are working with what we have in resources."
"Is this not enough? I provide funds, the great Van Helsing built this, and you were under his wing until he died, and you still cannot get a job done."
"We are known as Nightfall," Adam argued. "We worked in the cover of the night because of the delicacy of the matter."
"But you have these humans to help you."
Dani shook her head, "We don't know what we are dealing with. It's willing to kill humans and supernaturals alike. I get that you are worried about your file, but I cannot rush this process."
Anger crossed Dracula's face and Jane and Maura watched in horror as it shifted from a human face to an almost bat like as fangs showed more prominently. "You will rush this process, Detective," Dracula retorted in deeper, animalistic voice. Suddenly, hands with enlarged nails grabbed Dani's shirt roughly. Jane was about to grab hold of Dracula, but the Lord of Darkness tossed Jane to the side quickly. The nails almost close to Jane's skin but barely missing.
However, Jane went flying full force.
"Jane," Maura rushed over to Jane's crumpled body at the crash murder board. Adam wasn't sure about drawing his weapon or not.
Being lifted up by Dracula, Dani didn't bother to fight it and eventually, she was eyelevel with Dracula and without fear, stared back as Dracula hissed, "You should fear me."
"I don't fear anything," Dani retorted.
Maura looked up from Jane and thought, What is she trying to prove?
"My love," Mina tried to calm Dracula, touching his shoulder but Dracula shrugged his wife's hand away, the claws digging into Dani's shirt and the skin. Blood was spilling out a bit which prompt Adam to snap out of his daze. The Creature attempted to step forward but, Dracula looked at the Creature, prompting him to stop in his steps.
"Danielle," Adam called out to his partner, seeing the blood dripping on the floor.
However, Dani didn't flinch instead the pounding of her head began to grow stronger and almost close to breaking her skull in half. But it did not deter her from continuing to look Dracula straight in the eye, her eyes tinting lighter as she heard the words echoing in her ears.
You couldn't see your monster before.
You are the monster you had to stop.
"Put her down, Dracula," Adam demanded.
Jane who was shaking the impact of her fall, looked up with Maura watching in concern.
Dani closed her eyes, with the color reverting back to their original color.
Dracula's face began to change back to the human, seeing Danielle's submission. "You are so weak," he hummed.
I am you and you are me.
Suddenly, Dani raised one of her arms and pulled Dracula's claws out of her chest and twisted the arm. Stunned by the pain, the vampire dropped Danielle, allowing the detective to grab the vampire and punch his jaw. Dracula staggered back with his lip cut; Mina gasped while the others looked gobsmacked.
Dani staggered back, looking down at the blood and for the first time, feeling pure rage coming through. "Get out," she shouted, "This team will handle this case and it deems fit. If you're worried about your blood, Vladimir, let me do my job."
Astounded, Dracula was ready to retort until he felt his wife grip his arm, dragging him out just as Bartu was rushing in. "Hey! What's going on," the gargoyle questioned, seeing the mess. Without missing a step, Dracula, however, left without a reply with a quick raise of his arm with him and Mina gone.
Immediately, Adam rushed over to Dani while Maura secured Jane's arm around the back of her neck and lifted her. They walked slowly toward another desk with Maura making Jane sit down and quickly, taking out her penlight.
"Jane, follow the light," Maura instructed.
"Maur, I'm fine."
Maura glared, "Jane Clementine Rizzoli, you were just thrown across the room by the most powerful vampire in the world. You are not fine."
Seeing the glare with the worry, Jane submitted, and her eyes followed the light while Adam questioned, "Dani, are you okay?"
Dani did not respond to the question but instructed, "Just go to my locker and grab my spare shirt."
"Dani, you are bleeding."
"It will heal," Dani snapped. Adam backed away quickly and watched as Dani rubbed her face, mumbling, "I'm sorry, Adam. Just…it will heal, I promise."
Adam looked unsure but nodded, walking away.
Maura let out a small sigh of relief and helped Jane up. As she helped Jane up, Maura reached out her hand and touched Jane's chin, examining her face. Jane's eyes followed Maura's, feeling the tensity in the air; Jane said the first thing that popped in her head, "So what's the diagnosis?" However, Maura didn't answer and sensing that Maura was trying to avoid the situation, Jane attempted to grab Maura's hand.
"Jane…"
"Maura," Jane stated softly, grabbing Maura's hand.
Scarred hands caressed smooth hands as Maura sighed, "No contusions and you're reactive so-"
"So that means I'm ok," Jane stated softly.
"Yes."
"Here, Dani," Adam stated, coming back with a black V-neck t-shirt. She removed the bloody shirt, revealing the claw marks from Dracula's rage. The skin was healing slowly with the blood dripping down and instinctively, Dani opened the drawer of her desk to take out some bandages.
Maura stepped back from Jane and was about to approach Dani however, the detective raised her hand without even facing Maura. The doctor stopped and Dani lowered her hand, placing the bandages on herself. She then placed the shirt on and took out two blue vials, popped them and drank them both as if they were a tequila shots.
She then grabbed her leather jacket and stated, "Let's go to Mama and get this summoning over it."
The car ride was quiet as Adam drove Dani, Jane, and Maura to Presage: Witchcraft and Other Oddities. As they pulled up to the store, Adam stopped the engine and asked, "Am I coming in?"
"Keep a look out."
Adam nodded and Dani stepped out with Jane and Maura following close behind. Dani approached the door but, before she could open it, Jane touched her arm. "Listen, are you okay," Jane questioned.
"Yeah, I'm fine."
"You've been acting weird since the Vault. You are not fine."
She's catching on to you, Danielle…she's not stupid after all.
Dani pulled her arm away. "I'm fine," Dani affirmed, opening the door to the shop.
"Hey, we're- Oh it's you, Detective," Barney the shrunken head greeted.
Maura's eyes widened in awe as she approached the head, "Astounding."
"You're not bad looking yourself."
"Barney, where's Regina and Mama?"
"In the back," the shrunken head retorted.
They then heard heels clicking on the floor which prompted the three women to look over to see Regina approaching. She gave Maura and Jane a small nod then passed Dani, brushing her shoulder against Dani's. She flipped the sign to 'close' as Regina spoke, "Mama is getting the circle ready."
"Ok," Dani retorted.
As Dani shifted back, Regina noticed the bandages on Dani's chest. She placed her hand out and asked quickly, "What happened to you?"
"I'm fine. Just a run with Dracula," Dani lowered Regina's hand away from the wound.
"But you're bleeding. Dani, let me look-"
"Just leave it be," Dani gritted, stepping away. Regina gave a concerned expression and watched as Dani walked toward the backroom, bringing her attention to Jane and Maura.
"She's been acting weird since the Vault," Jane stated softly.
Regina bit her lip but followed Dani with Jane and Maura following her. They entered the backroom slowly with Jane and Maura taking in the sight. The front of the store definitely looked like something that an average person would see but, the back seemed to be something from a fantasy novel especially to Maura.
The back of the room had a numerous amount of candles that were lit. There were a vast variety of jars on shelves containing different oddities that Maura would have loved to pluck off the shelf to examine herself. Jane, however, was slightly crossed out with the menagerie of animal hides and some odd items that could make Jane question if she didn't know about this world.
In the dead center was Mama Lorna who had created a circle with ancient runes, markings that Dani knew that they were meant to be symbols of protection with crystals, sands, and chalk. "Danielle, the circle is ready to summon the Twisted Ones," Mama informed the detective.
"Will it contain them," Dani inquired.
Mama nodded, "It should make sure their energies are nullified enough."
"Enough," Jane probed.
"The Twisted Ones can be very dangerous and manipulative," Regina explained. "They will do anything to get deal done. Hence, we need to be careful when we summon them."
"They might ask something from us?"
"For a trade, yes."
"But what for," Maura added.
"Knowledge," Mama answered simply. The older woman grabbed the book on her table, opening it up to reveal the medallion. "They crave knowledge, and it can be any time such as someone's truest desires to their darkest secrets." She then gestured Regina to step to a certain spot, prompting the apprentice to move to the top of the circle. Mama walked to the bottom part of the circle, leaving Jane, Maura and Dani standing to the side.
Maura leaned over to Dani and whispered, "What do we do?"
"Why did we even bring Maura," Jane added.
Dani pulled out her pendant around her neck and gestured, "This magic can hurt Mama and Regina if the Twisted Ones decide not to cooperate."
"Like how?"
"You don't want to know."
"We call upon the ones in the darkness," Mama started, raising her hands up as did Regina. The circle started to glow a dark green, making Jane grip Maura's hand protectively. "We call upon the ones who inscribed this medallion. Come forth and speak to us now."
There was a rumble and a crack of lightning.
Suddenly, three women stood before them.
Maura knew the tale of Macbeth and expected that the three witches would look like ugly hags. Yet, there was three beautiful women standing before them. Flawless skin, each with black hair and each wearing different color dresses: dark red, black, and brown. The style was reminiscent of the Dark Ages, making her realize that these women went beyond time.
"Who dares to call us three," the first sister spoke.
"The sisters of long before thee," the second continued.
"Suppressing our power a trick we see," the third added.
Mama glanced back at Dani and the detective gave a nod, with the older woman questioning, "Twisted Ones, we call upon you to ask about this medallion you created."
The second witch smirked, "Ah yes, the control."
"Of a very simple soul," the first witch laughed.
Jane wrapped her arm around Maura protectively. The third witched laughed as well, "But what is your goal?"
"Our goal," Jane mumbled.
"They want to know what the main purpose," Dani retorted. She stepped forward and spoke, "The medallion belonged to a Lycan. We need a name and if they are more of these trinkets?"
The witches turned and smirked with all of them speaking, "You want to know the truth. But there's a price for the sooth."
"What kind of price," Regina questioned.
"One of longing."
"One of deploring"
"One of angering."
"A price of three is too much to ask," Mama argued.
The witches turned, "Then we don't speak."
"Mama, it needs to be done," Dani spoke softly.
"You cannot do it, Danielle. The danger-"
"This young immortal knows the price," the third witch hissed, her face distorting to one older and hideous.
Regina's eyes darted toward Dani. She's an immortal.
The witch pointed her finger toward Dani and continued, "A gift from you three shall suffice."
Maura and Jane looked at each other and Dani shook her head. "They are not involved or part of this world," Mama argued.
"Take it from me," Dani volunteered.
So self-sacrificing…
"We will not speak until our deal is agreed," the second witch stated. "If you attempt to break the deal…" Suddenly, Regina started to a feel a vice grip at her throat. She gasped in pain with the hand of first witch raised, turning to a fist slowly.
Jane looked at Maura and they shared the same look. The look spoke many things, but it also filled with worry for the fear of each other's safety. "Stop, we'll do it," Jane commanded, and the witch's fist unclenched, letting Regina gain breath once more.
Each witch smiled widely as they each place a handout. Sensing the hesitation from Maura and Jane and admiring their bravery, Dani stepped forward first and went into her pocket, pulling out her wallet and opened it to take out a small object.
A ring, Jane raised an eyebrow as Dani held it out to them.
All three witches placed their hands out and hummed at once, "We take what you give. A prize of showed an arise lack of forgive. Yet, you grieve for the deed you did but, another does not indeed."
The ring disappeared from her hand but there was also a dark green glow that came with it. Her body was encased in it and a face of pain shifted to anger until the glow broke away. Dani backed away into one of the bookcases, looking exhausted and with a haunted expression crossing her face.
Unwilling to let go of Maura, Jane held Maura's hand tightly and Maura returned the squeeze. They stepped forward together and the witches placed their hands out once more. They sneered as they spoke, "Regret of opening the heart and yet…there is a part unfound. There is…the flame and longing, a desire that seemed untamed. Yet, we will accept your payment but there's no anguish or pain that became."
With that same green glow, it engulfed Maura and Jane but unlike Dani, the two felt a connection quickly, one that they knew was there but felt stronger than ever. Immediately, Maura could hear Jane's voice despite her mouth not moving, "I regret not telling Maura that I'm in love her. I've almost lost her so many times."
Jane's eyes widened and she looked away, feeling embarrassed and sad, fearing this was the moment that she would lose. However, Maura squeezed Jane's hand and said aloud, "My greatest desire is to be yours. To love you beyond friendship."
The witches hissed as the glow pulsed and a wind arose with Jane and Maura almost falling backwards. Dani, still shaken, pushed herself up and pointed out, "Deal done. Give us what we want."
The first witch smirked to her sisters who returned the same one. She then nodded and spoke, "As agreed, the Twisted three give you the answer you seek. The medallion of control, there are many and free. One who seeks great power and vengeance wishes hellbent."
"Owen is the name of your Lycan who died broken," the third witch informed.
"Until we see each other again, one of two or is it two of one," the second witch cackled.
There was then another clap of lightning and the Twisted Ones disappeared from the circle and silence filled the cold air of the shop.
Hi! You made it! Leave a review and I'll see you next chapter!
