"You must suffer me to go my own dark way." – From "The Strange Case of Doctor Jekyll and Mister Hyde"

Ch. 13: The Red Eyes

"Maura," Jane shouted, watching as Dani's eyes opened to reveal the dark red hue.

Maura jumped back quickly as did Regina before the hand could grip them. The detective grabbed Maura while Frost helped Regina up as a deep chuckle came passed Dani's lips. Slowly, the body rose from the ground, sitting up then standing up with Dani staring at her hands. Each finger was tested then the grip opened and closed before it slid through the dark brownish red hair, taking out the ponytail and shaking the hair loose.

All eyes were on Dani as she began to unbutton the first couple buttons of her garment before it opened to the white shirt. She then took the jacket and placed it over shoulders like a cape.

Watching this, Adam stepped forward and spoke first, unsure what was happening. "Dani," he called out softly.

"Unable to talk now," Dani spoke, a deep British accent coming out. "The final barrier that stopped me has finally come loose and I am now free. This body is now in my control."

"Then who are we speaking to," Adam questioned back.

With a dramatic turn and bow, the new inhabitant spoke, "My brother was Edward Hyde, the faithful counterpart of dear Dani's brother, Henry Jekyll. I can't the stupid first names and I am my own individual. A better improvement of my dear brother but you can simply call me, Hyde."

"Hyde," Adam tested the name.

A smirk came. "Yes, remember it well, Creature," Hyde ordered. They turned around and took in the sight of everyone in the ballroom, "Well look at this, a big party and Dani didn't want me to join." The eyes darted around until they met Dracula who was shielding Mina behind him. "Ah, the Lord of Darkness and his beloved, innocent wife," then there was a dramatic bow by Hyde.

"Get out of here," Dracula ordered.

Hyde laughed, "Is that how we greet guests especially one who knows your wife so intimately?"

Shit, Jane thought, watching as Dracula gave a confused expression. She glanced at Adam, Frankie, and Frost who gave her questioning looks. Jane's eyes darted to Hyde as her mind tried to think quickly.

"What is it talking about," Dracula interrogated.

Mina floundered, "I…I-"

A faked surprised expression cross Hyde's face. "Oh yes, I forgot that it was meant to keep a secret," Hyde fake gasped. "Well, like the old adage, loose lips sink ships."

Lips, Jane's mind screamed. The blue vials…it's a way to keep Hyde down. I need a one of those stupid bottles now. She gestured her hand toward Adam quickly, making a drink motion. Noticing the gesture, Adam nodded and placed his gun back in the holster to go to his other pocket.

Usually, there was one spare vial between Dani and Adam but, for some odd reason, the one that Adam had was gone.

"You see, your Lordship. Many, many years ago, your wife felt a bit lonely, and she got friendly with good old Danielle," Hyde spoke loudly.

"What," Dracula sneered with fangs, looking at his wife quickly.

Adam showed his empty hand and Jane cussed inwardly, "Shit."

"My love, please," Mina pleaded softly.

"My love," Hyde mimicked. "Your lady speaks sweet nothings to you, my Lord to calm and appease but, she did that to Dani as well. While you handled a stupid feud, you chased your wife into another's arms."

Dracula's eyes went red as claws came from his hands, charging at Hyde. Not bothering to move, Hyde took the impact of the vampire, landing on their back with the claw sunk into the chest.

Everyone gasped at the sight.

"Move," Jane ordered quickly.

Mina rushed over to Dracula, attempting to pulled him off. Eventually, Adam grabbed hold of the furious vampire and pulled him off, holding him back in a vice grip. Jane, with Frost and Frankie's help, rose Hyde onto their feet while Korsak and Nina stood in front of the crowd attempting to keep them at bay.

Maura and Regina rushed over right after with Maura rushing over to assess. "There's blood everywhere," Maura hissed to Jane.

"Dani bleeds pretty fast," Hyde chuckled.

"Shut up," Jane ordered.

Hyde glanced over her shoulder, "Come on, Rizzoli. I'm bleeding and finally free, let me live a little."

"You're going to get Dani killed," Jane argued back as she placed handcuffs on Hyde.

"I will kill her," Dracula screeched, trying to break free.

Hyde laughed loudly then taunted, "You can't kill me because I'm immortal like you!"

"Have you no shame," Mina shouted, feeling tears in her eyes.

Hyde smirked with Maura feeling a twist her chest while Jane felt a tug on the handcuffs as Hyde jerked forward. "Shame is a feeling," Hyde answered simply. "Dani carries it more than I. Anyways, it's good to get the bad stuff out of the way so she can deal with her emotional turmoil for this one here," the dark eyes darting toward Regina.

Suddenly, Dracula shoved away from Adam but kept his eyes on Hyde. They stared at each other until finally, Dracula looked around to see the large crowd gawking at the spectacle. The Count took in a deep breath then released it as his eyes were not red and the claws and fangs retracted. He then looked at Mina with a cold stare then turned on his heel with a swift raise of cape, disappearing.

With the departure of their host, folks began to leave with their eyes trailing on Hyde

"Jane," Adam called, "take Hyde to the warehouse and I'll meet you there."

Jane nodded and Hyde laughed, "Oooo going back to the warehouse, this will be fun."

"So, you broke in?"

"Technically, I didn't. Very complicated when you have two people in one body especially when you got a voice like Dani's demanding to get her body back."

"And you won't," Regina questioned; concern laced in her voice.

All Hyde did was smirk.

After returning to the warehouse, they placed Hyde in an interrogation room while they changed out of their masquerade clothes to some more comfortable. Now in her "Property of Boston Police Department" t-shirt and jeans, Jane watched Hyde from the one-way window. "You're not sure how to feel," the detective looked over her shoulder to see Maura approaching, dressed in a pair of jeans and a red blouse.

"Reading exerts of a book doesn't compare to seeing this, Maur," Jane replied.

Maura nodded in agreement. "Seeing Hyde compared to Dani, there are definite but subtle differences, but it also answers the headaches, the twist of the neck, the change of tone," Maura observed. "It answers a lot

"Why lie though?"

Maura touched Jane's shoulder, "We'll find out."

Suddenly, there was a loud slam of the door to reveal Adam stomping in. Everyone gathered in the main squad area and Adam looked everyone before dropping in his chair. "We are in deep shit right now," the Creature expressed.

"Dracula," Nina asked.

"Dracula is one of our worries." Adam looked at Jane, "The card that you got. We can start going through some of the databases and see what we get. If we can locate them, we can find Faust."

Korsak crossed his arms. "What about Dani," he inquired, his eyes taking in the sight of Hyde sitting in the interrogation room.

Adam sighed, "I don't know." His expression then hardened, "I can't believe she kept this a secret."

"You didn't know," Frost questioned in surprise.

"Do I look like I'm supposed to," Adam barked back.

"Whoa," Frost raised his hands up, "I'm just shocked, Adam. You and Dani seem pretty close."

Adam's eyes darted over at the interrogation window, "Not close enough." He then stood up and walked over to Dani's desk, opening one of the drawers to reveal a blue vial. He lifted it up, its coloring bouncing off the ceiling lights before handing it to Jane, "So what's the plan?"

"Why are you asking me," Jane asked, taking the vial unsurely.

"You had the case originally. It only landed in our hands cause of the supernatural elements and with Danielle," his hand gestured toward the window, "its best if you run it."

Jane sighed, "But why give the vial to me?"

"Because Dani's going to not want to face anyone who's close to her right now. Regina and I are out of the question," Adam explained. Regina attempted to cut in, but Adam raised his hand, prompting her to pause, "Listen, you two got something and I don't think Dani's ready to deal with us asking about her condition."

Jane nodded. She then handed the business card to Frost who took a picture of it and placed it on the large display screen. "The business card is going to lead us to Faust's sponsor," Jane explained.

"By finding Faust's sponsor, we'll be able to find Faust."

"Hopefully Faust can make sense of all of the shit that's happening," Adam added.

"We'll get started on the name look up," Frankie gestured toward Nina and himself.

Adam stood up from his chair. "I might need to go to Dani's apartment," he informed, glancing at the interrogation room again. Hyde was pacing in the room with their hands still handcuffed and as if they felt the gaze of others watching them through the one-way mirror, they turned to look over.

"You know…" Hyde sing song. "If you really want to find Faust, I can tell you."

Jane raised an eyebrow. "Do you believe that," she asked.

Adam shrugged, "I don't know. Van Helsing never had record of this so Hyde is an unknown being."

While the two talked, Maura took a seat at Dani's desk and took in the sight of all the papers that covered the detective's desk. Her eyes then widened, remembering that she had a couple of books belonging to Van Helsing, prompting her to rush over to her medical bag to pull them out.

"My friend…formula…predecessor," Maura noted in the medical journal, rereading the exert. She then lifted her gaze toward the interrogation room and concluded, "This belonged to Dani."

Jane and Adam turned.

"What do you mean, Maur," Jane inquired.

"Doctor Crane gave me these medical journals by Doctor Van Helsing to help me get a better understanding of the supernatural world. I noticed this note and never considered of the significance until now," Maura explained. She turned the pages further, "These have many notes and I assumed that these were Crane's since this was in his property. But this shorthand, the small notes in the margins belong to Dani and it also looks like Hyde wrote in it as well."

"Then how come Crane didn't notice it?"

"Crane's a bookworm. He lets the book collect and build dust," Adam noted. "I wouldn't be surprised if Dani gave it to him as a way to hide the notes or to preserve Van Helsing's memory."

"Then why not keep it?"

Adam shrugged, "That's a question for Dani."

Jane huffed.

"Is it possible for you decipher the writings, Maura?"

Maura bit her lip, "I'm not sure if I can decipher all of it in a small amount of time."

"Decipher enough that when Hyde disappears that we can use it to ask Dani?"

"I'll try."

Jane looked over at the window and walked toward it, watching as Hyde walked back and forth. "We can't wait on interrogating Hyde," Jane stated. "Any information they have might help us."

"We don't know how dangerous they are," Adam argued.

"We're going have to risk it."

NF

"Idiots," Hyde commented simply.

"Yet you're the one handcuffed," Hyde heard. Their eyes darted to see Dani in the reflection of the mirror.

Hyde shrugged, "Like handcuffs stopped me before." Suddenly, the door opened to reveal Jane and Adam, prompting Hyde to smirk at the sight of them. "I see you came to grace me with your presence, Jane."

Jane's eyes narrowed. She then walked to the chair and pulled it out then commanded, "Sit down."

"What happened to manners?"

"You're a suspect."

"A suspect? I doubt that," Hyde argued as they sat down. "You're both here to see if what I say is true or not."

Jane took the seat in front of Hyde while Adam stood against the wall. "When was your last transformation," Adam asked initially.

Hyde smirked, "Do you think that I'm going to be willing to talk with you, Creature?"

"Don't call me that."

"But that is your true name. Born from pieces of others through unnatural means."

"Like you are born through natural means," Adam argued.

Hyde's eyes seemed to light up in gleam at this statement. "I was never born but made and that's all I will say," they retorted.

"You won't talk," Jane questioned.

"No, I won't talk with Dani's partner here." The hands tapped on the table then stopped, "However, I think your partner would like to join us, Jane."

"Detect-"

"Not talking about the detectives, Jane." Hyde's dark red eyes darted to the one-way mirror and with a wide smile, "Doctor Isles, care to join us?"

Jane gritted her teeth as she yanked back Hyde's chair. "Leave her out of this," the brunette seethed.

"Why keep like minds apart?"

"You are not like her!"

Silence hung over them briefly before Hyde leaned in back in their chair. "You are trying to track Faust and his sponsor, correct?" The question went unanswered as Hyde continued, "You see, detectives, Dani and I have two complete separate memories. It's something that I perfected as the years have gone by."

"So, what you know that Dani might not?"

"Precisely but that doesn't mean you go around and try to interrogate a mind like mine. Now you bring your delightful girlfriend, or I won't talk anymore." Before Jane could even reply, there was a knock on the door which prompted everyone's eyes to dart to the door. Hyde chuckled, "Seems she's willing to come in."

Jane didn't acknowledge Hyde's statement and opened the door, walking out with Adam following. As the door closed behind them, Jane looked at Maura who was standing there with Van Helsing's book. Immediately, Maura noticed the expression on her girlfriend's face that said everything she felt.

"I know you want to protect me-" Maura started.

Jane shook her head, "You will not go near that…that…"

"It's Danielle, Jane."

"That's not Dani and you know that."

"I do but we need to find Faust and his sponsor fast and if Hyde crossed paths with him, it might narrow the search."

Jane looked at Adam and the Creature returned the look to his colleague. "She has a point," Adam pointed out. "As much as we don't like the situation, it is out of our hands."

It seems in this world, there isn't much choice.

NF

When the door reopened, Hyde watched as Maura took a seat in front of them. Jane followed her inside and stood toward the side, staying close as the vigil protector. "Doctor Maura Isles, Chief Medical Examiner of the Boston Commonwealth, a pleasure to meet you finally," Hyde greeted with a bow of the head.

"Ms-"

"It's just Hyde, no prefix or title."

"No first name?"

Hyde scoffed, "No. Haven't had a surname until the recent years." Maura nodded then placed Van Helsing's book, pushing it toward Hyde. "Ah you connected the dots," Hyde stated as the smile crossed their face.

"The note was referencing to you," Maura pointed out. "The monster within is you."

"Abraham found Danielle in London, after Henry's death and our newly granted immortality was given to us," Hyde explained.

"But why did you want to speak with me?"

"Well-"

Suddenly, Hyde gritted their teeth and laughed maniacally as their head rested back. "Oh, it's going to be one of those days, Danielle," Hyde cackled before there was a yell or scream; Jane wasn't sure what it was but it prompted to grab Maura up from her chair quickly as Hyde's hands gripped the table, making the metal crunch in their grasp.

Then the hands released, and a gasp came as the head jerked forward. The eyes that were dark and red in color were now a worrisome brown. Sweat covered the brow as the eyes darted over to Jane and Maura.

"I don't know how long I have until it breaks through again," Danielle expressed quickly.

"How can we be sure that you are who you say you are," Jane retorted back.

Dani gasped in pain, "For God's sake, I don't have this time to prove if I'm myself or it."

The eyes darted quickly to Maura who resumed her seat in front of Danielle. "You can't control it," Maura inferred.

"No…it is twisting in my body that I feel the world spinning." She blinked and Maura saw the red eyes briefly appear before they disappeared in another blink. "Listen to me," Dani conveyed, taking hold of Maura's hands into her handcuffed ones. Jane was about to lunge but Maura stopped her as Dani spoke softly, "It likes to play games."

"What do you mean," Jane questioned, pushing Dani's back against the chair.

Dani gritted her teeth at the feel of the metal against her back. "He finds a kinship with Maura. Thrives on knowledge and likes to toy with you, Jane," Dani explained. "It's charming and will try to make you like it. It will twist and maneuver through conversation like bread and butter. Do not trust it even if you see a flicker of hope in its eyes. It's not me anymore. It's that thing."

"Why did you keep this from us?"

Dani didn't reply but instead, her body hunched over a bit as another cry of pain came. Maura did not move nor let Jane pull her back as she removed her hands quickly from Danielle's. Deep breathing then came before the head rose slowly and the eyes opened once more.

"A temporary moment of weakness," Hyde spoke. "My apologies."

"What do you know about the case," Jane questioned.

Hyde looked up at Jane. "Several supernatural folks killed with specific body parts cut from them. Medallions that are expected to help a Lycan with their metamorphosis is actually controlling them and that doesn't add that important artifacts are missing," they pointed out nonchalantly.

"So, you know about everything," Maura spoke.

"I know enough," Hyde smirked. "You can say that we are aware when our consciouses break through but if we can't then we lack any knowledge. But I always broke through."

"And Danielle can't break through?"

"Once in a while." They then raised their handcuffed hands, "It's more of the lack of will to fight."

"You forced Dani under your control."

Hyde then cocked their head to the side at this comment. It was interesting for Maura to observe this movement. The eyes traveled from the top of Maura's head to where the desk stopped. Red predatory eyes that it gave a chill as if Maura was facing someone as bad as Charles Hoyt. The question that Maura pondered is if this person was just as bad as Hoyt.

"Dani brought this upon herself," Hyde spoke finally. They then leaned in, prompting Jane to move closer, "But, that's not why I'm here."

"As negotiated, I'm here."

"Yes. You want to know about Faust. Heavy drinker can't really hold his Jager well. Started to have loose tongue after drink two so he started to-how do you modern people say it? Oh yes, spill the beans."

"Then spill," Jane pushed.

Hyde smirked, "He mentioned that he's making sure that the Blood Den is getting the "proper" clientele. He doesn't have the best social skills and he's not the charming young man he was but he's still persuasive."

"Okay but Faust must have said where the Blood Den's at and who's his sponsor?"

Hyde raised their handcuff hands and wagged their finger. "Not answering anymore questions until you tell me something," Hyde expressed.

"Like what," Jane questioned.

"Knowledge for knowledge? I think Maura could appease to that."

Maura bit her lip, looking at Jane who had a worried expression. The doctor gave a small nod then looked back at Hyde, "What do you want to know?"

"How does it feel to be the child of a murderer?"

"Hey," Jane barked, shoving the chair back.

Hyde chuckled, rebalancing the chair. The smirk formed once more and questioned, "Really? Is that all you got?"

Jane clenched her hand until she felt Maura touch the hand. "You like to just press on people's buttons," Maura said calmly and quietly.

Sensing a change in the air, Hyde brought their attention back to Maura. "Pushing is the term, doctor but, you can say that I enjoy it immensely."

"Why?"

Hyde leaned in. "Ever felt restrained, restricted when all you want is freedom? Pushing buttons makes people act out. When people act out, they reveal their true natures. For example," the handcuffed hands gestured toward Jane, "your thick-headed Italian detective wears her heart on her sleeve. She loves you so deeply that the sheer look she's giving me shows how much she despises me. Despite trying to hold a professional manner, this case has become personal for some odd reason."

"Why odd?"

"Odd because she wants justice for people she doesn't know. In this world of creatures and myths, there is no justice, only balance but, you have not answered my question, Doctor Isles. How does it feel to know that your father is a murderer?"

Silence hung over them, Jane smack jawed on how Hyde was able to read her while Maura was trying to choose her words. "Unsure," Maura answered finally, the word echoing in the room.

Hyde leaned back in their chair. "Honesty…" it was a low hum, but it seemed to reflect a lot of meanings, "a rarity."

"It's a quality."

"Ah…that's why Dani is fond of you. The honesty."

Jane sighed as she pulled out a small notebook, placing it in front of Hyde. "Name of the place," Jane questioned.

Maura bit her lip, "Please…"

Suddenly, Maura spotted the smallest change in Hyde. The piercing red eyes softened as they kept their eyes locked on Maura's. They took the pen from Jane's hand and wrote on the small notebook then handed it back. Hyde then leaned back and said softly, "Tell Dani that I want my cane back. That's all I want since she keeps that damn watch."

At these words, Hyde's head rolled back with a cry of pain and the hands gripped on the table once more until the grip released. Dani's head moved forward and there were a couple loud cracks until Dani opened her eyes to reveal the original hue of her eyes.

"Fuck," Dani winced, raising her hands to her face. "Please tell me you got everything from it."

"Yeah," Jane nodded. "Are you okay?"

"Delightful. Get these damn things off me," Dani gestured toward the handcuffs.

Jane gave an unsure expression before she pulled the handcuff key from her pocket and unlocked them. She then backed away as Dani stood up from her chair, rubbing her wrists. The detective moved around the room, heading toward the door, and opened it. "The look you give is the reason why I hid this," Dani spoke aloud.

"Dani, wait," Maura stopped the detective from leaving. "Let Jane and I come with you."

"I just want to go home. You guys have the address from it and the sponsor's name…"

"Adam is already at your place," Jane answered. "Went to collect some vials for you…"

Dani sighed until her head scrunched as she heard, "Don't forget my cane, Jane."

"Shut up bastard," Dani sneered before looking up at Jane. "You agreed to bring that cane?"

Hearing the strain in Dani's voice, Jane nodded and gave a sympathetic expression, "We had to if we wanted the address. Mentioned about your pocket watch."

"Fine," Dani grunted back, dragging herself to her desk.

Jane and Maura follow suit with Jane sitting across from Dani and Maura sitting in between them. "Why did you keep it a secret," Jane inquired.

"To hide." She then opened a drawer to pull out a small glass then pulled out a key. She unlocked the drawer and opened it, pulling out a small whiskey bottle.

"Should you be drinking that," Maura inquired.

"Technically, I'm not on the job and I need something to silent the other one."

"Does it work?"

"Who knows? This is the second time that this happened, and it numbs my headache," Dani explained. "You have Claudius Xigbar, Markos Randolf, and Faust."

"We have an address now," Jane added. "29213 Patriot Road. I'm not even sure if this is a club or a place for…stuff. It's in one of the suburban areas."

"So that's where you go."

"Me?"

"I…I can't go." Dani took a large sip of her drink and shook her head, "I won't go especially with it loose inside me."

"You mean Hyde," Maura questioned.

"Don't bring that name up ever," Dani snapped.

"Hey," Jane snapped back. "She's been kind to you, so you don't get to snap at her. Got it?"

Dani closed her eyes, rubbing her eyes tiredly, "I'm sorry, Maura. Like I said…it's best that I don't go because of my…condition."

"You should tag along just in case," Jane added.

"Let me just get my formula then we'll get going."

"Do we still call you Detective Stevenson?"

Dani looked at the glass, twisting the cup in her hand then placed it down, "Might as well address however you like but my real name is Danielle Sarah Jekyll, twin sister to Doctor Henry James Jekyll."
