Ch. 15: Mortal Feelings

"Council plans to put your head on a pike," Faust told Dani.

"You mean Dracula," Dani questioned back.

Faust nodded, "I heard that you had a splendid affair with Dracula's wife." Faust started to spin in his chair, "They want to charge you for being unregistered and posing a threat to the community."

"A threat," Korsak scoffed.

"All Hyde did was reveal about the affair. They haven't showed prone of violence," Adam argued.

Faust shrugged. "They are more concerned that you'll become something like the detective's predecessor." Faust stopped spinning in his chair and stood up, "What was the kill count? Five men and one woman killed with one man injured?"

Jane watched as Dani let out a loud sigh. She closed her eyes and leaned against the wall, "Yes and that doesn't include his death." She then opened her eyes and retorted, "Alright, talk about the professor?"

"She wanted to know about HY3-E, an untested formula that was supposed to help control the Lycan transformation," Faust answered.

Hearing about the untested part, Dani glanced back at Adam who looked back at his partner with a concerned expression. Sensing the tension, Maura stepped forward, "Explain the untested part and how it will help control the Lycan's transformation?"

"Created through secondhand information supposedly. It was meant to separate the two entities and isolate them. Lycans see their condition as a blessing and a curse. The good from-"

"The evil," Dani completed. The paleness became more apparent prompting Maura to approach Dani to check her pulse. It was slow and steady but there was a sign of distress; "Separation of good and evil from the Lycan and the human?"

Faust nodded. "Again, rumors that with the separation, they can isolate the Lycan even to the point of extraction."

"Extraction? How the hell is that possible," Adam interrogated.

"It's not."

Jane looked at Dani, "Your brother's condition?"

"HY3-E…I thought it was just coincidence, but hearing Faust explain this formula," Dani crossed her arms. "Henry tried to focus on trying to separate the good from the bad. He thought it was a way to help our father who was sick and back then, trying to solve the mind's problems was thought to be a separation of good and evil. But to do that to a Lycan, it's…dangerous."

"How dangerous?"

"Who knows. I would need a sample of it, but it might explain the faulty medallions."

"So, it's possible that your brother's formula is floating around," Frankie questioned.

Dani shook her head, "I got rid of the formula, burned his journal."

About that

"Did you," Faust questioned back, "cause it looks like your brother's formula maybe out and about. Now…" the old man gestured toward Dani, "you hold your end of the bargain."

"One more question," Jane added, remembering an item. "Xigbar and Randolf? Your sponsors?"

"What about them?"

"Who is he?"

Faust crossed his arms, "They're my sponsors and got me the position I'm in. That's it."

"Just like that? What's their connection to you?"

"Look, forget about Xigbar or Randolf," Faust snapped and looked back at Dani. "Keep your end of the bargain."

"We can't do it here," Dani informed. "We need to do it in a control environment."

"Control? This doesn't involve control," Faust argued.

"It's not that easy."

Suddenly, Faust pulled out a knife from his desk prompting everyone to draw their gun except Danielle. "Put the knife down," Jane ordered.

"He won't," Dani retorted. She glanced at Adam who sighed and holstered his weapon.

Jane looked at Adam, "Have you lost your mind?

"He's an immortal. The wound heals fast and if you kill him, he'll come back now or much later in time so it's pointless to even shoot him," Dani informed. She then brought her attention back to Faust, "You know that if you try to stab me that I can't die either, Faustus."

"Hold your end of the bargain."

"It doesn't work like that. Hyde comes out in rage and through other triggers," Dani explained. Suddenly, Faust lunged forward, grabbing Dani by the shirt, and charging her toward the wall with the knife at her neck.

"Does that trigger anything for you, Detective," Faust hissed. "Or do I have to remind you that your brother killed?"

"I acknowledge," Dani whispered.

"No, you haven't since you changed your name. You've been on the run."

"You don't know what I've been doing."

Jane could hear the grit in Dani's voice as a bit of blood began to drip from her neck. "I have though: sleeping with Dracula's wife, hiding who you really are. You are just proving that you are ashamed of who've become, Danielle Jekyll," Faust smirked.

Suddenly, as if a flip of a switch, Dani shoved Faust back, making the old man fall backwards then she contorted until red eyes appeared. Faust smiled and watched as Hyde approached him in slow steps. They touched their neck to see the blood dripping before grabbing Faust by his arm and with a sudden twist, breaking it. Faust screamed in pain while Hyde greeted, "Hello once more, Faustus."

"What," Faust gaped.

"You don't remember because of the fact you were drunk but I'm not sure if you were wiser now or earlier." Hyde picked up the knife and glanced at Faust, prompting Jane and the others to point their gun at Hyde. The double looked over their shoulder, "He wanted to see me and here I am. Now, you want to shoot a guest?"

"You are very much unwelcomed," Maura informed Hyde.

"Ah, so true." Hyde crouched to Faust, placing the knife against his throat, and asked, "How does that feel?"

"I'm not scared," Faust argued.

"Then you are truly not wise."

"Guys, look out," Frost warned.

Jane turned her gun toward the doorway to see several arm men charging prompting Hyde to stand up quickly and throw the knife, hitting one of them in the head. "It appears we have company," Hyde informed before closing the door and locking it.

"That's not going to hold them," Korsak pointed out.

"That is true, but I believe Faust has an escape hatch," Hyde mentioned, picking up the old man.

"Grab the desk," Jane ordered, trying to delay the intruders' arrival. With Korsak and Frankie's help, they placed the desk against the door. "Nina, how many do we have out there," Jane asked, glancing at Hyde.

"About five."

"Well, we have two immortals and four humans armed with guns against whomever those people are," Hyde informed. "I'm not sure about our chances."

"They'll kill you all," Faust giggled despite his pain.

Everyone looked at each other with worry except Hyde. "They are here to torture you, Faustus."

Faust's smile dropped. "What? No. I've done nothing wrong."

"You made a deal with Danielle, you idiot. You gave information that is very important to this ridiculous investigation and whomever sent these lovely men want you."

"No…no...Xigbar wouldn't do that to me. We made a deal," Faust argued.

There was a large thud at the door with the men pushing, attempting to break the door down before one shouted, "Shoot that door down!"

"What kind of deal," Adam asked.

"Fuck that! We need to get out of here," Frankie shouted.

Maura looked around and noticed the bookcase and quickly, pushed it down. Jane smiled, "Good job, honey."

Everyone jumped behind the cover except Hyde and Faust who stood in the open.

"Are you nuts," Jane shouted at Hyde.

"Who knows," Hyde retorted. "Now, you are going to tell us where the escape hatch is."

"I…I don't have one," Faust stammered. Several gunshots whizzed through the wood, piercing Hyde's shoulder, who did not flinch, and missing Faust completely. Jane, Frankie, Adam, Korsak, and Maura returned fire gingerly, trying to avoid hitting Faust and Hyde.

"You are going to get us killed."

"Faust, we live forever but this can be dragged out and possibly painful. At least, for you." Several more bullets and banging against the door with a bullet whizzed through, hitting Faust's foot. He screamed in pain and Hyde rolled their eyes, "Tell us how to get out so you don't get another bullet in you."

Faust's eyes darted to the floor, prompting to Jane to look at the rug. She grabbed it and pulled it aside to reveal the trap door, prompting Hyde to go over the bookcase with a bleeding Faust. Adam opened the door with Faust being dropped in by Hyde before the other followed closely behind.

One by one everyone exited, leaving enough time to escape before the doors finally burst open and their assailants realized they were gone.

As soon as they reached the van and started to speed away, the Blood Den was set ablaze. "No! My money," Faust moaned in pain.

"You're lucky that you're alive," Hyde retorted, sitting in the back with Maura, Jane, and Korsak. The red eyes darted toward Jane whose gun was pointed at them, "You know that I'm on your side."

"Yeah, no offence, but you are literally the supposed evil half of Danielle, so I don't feel comfortable with you," Jane replied.

Hyde smirked, "I don't take offence of your lack of comfort but, what you perceived to be evil might be off its mark."

The group returned to the warehouse with the injured Faust. Upon entering, Maura had Korsak and Frankie escort Faust down to the morgue, much to Faust's dismay, while Jane and Adam escorted Hyde into the interrogation.

"Sit down," Jane ordered. Hyde sighed and for the first time, Jane watched as Hyde placed their hair up. It was odd to look at Hyde for it was like looking at Hyde. But, with Hyde, she needed to clear several things as of now, "What interest do you have in Maura?"

Hyde leans forward. "What makes you think that I have an interest in Doctor Isles, Detective?"

"The look that you are giving her," Jane stated.

"What look?"

Jane huffed, "It's one that you're trying to find answers from her." The detective leaned in, "I'm not going to let you hurt her."

Hyde leaned back. There was silence and they gazed at each other until Hyde asked quietly, "Do you really think I would hurt her?"

"You grab her already once."

"Reflex," Hyde excused.

"Of a killer?"

Don't answer that, Hyde heard Dani. Hyde snapped their fingers with a wolfish grin, "Aha, there is the question. The silent one hovering over your head like a ticking time bomb." They then leaned forward, "To answer your question-"

"Hyde!"

Hyde clenched their forehead in anguish before shaking it off. Jane noticed it immediately, "Dani can hear me in there."

"Like I explained, it can be selective and usually if one of us can keep our minds closed well enough, we don't hear much but unlike Dani, who leaves the mind open wide enough for myself to hear every little thing, I do not as often." Hyde rubbed their hands along their shirt, "Your answer is that my hands don't have blood on them and, I don't plan to hurt the doctor or you. I just ponder how?"

"How what," Jane interrogated.

"How can… a love like yours… survive?"

Jane gave a confused expression at Hyde. It seemed the question also caught the other off guard as well, as if the thought was never one to escape but it somehow did. "What does that have to do with Maura," Jane questioned.

Hyde…stop. We are not going into this.

"You two are from two different worlds; she's rich and you are…well not," Hyde started. "Blue collared loves the white collared and they return it somehow with no tricks? No lies?"

Jane crossed her arms. "I would never lie to Maura, and she wouldn't to me or even anyone. We were best friends, and it grew to something more."

"You don't fit in her world though," Hyde argued. "Are you just an experiment, the phase, the toss in the sack until something better comes?"

Quit it!

"You think that low of Maura?"

Hyde shook their head, "No. I'm just breaking walls within. I don't…know love, affection, not even lust." Jane gave a surprised expression, "Ah, you just think that as the other half that I live in sin. Sorry to break the news, Detective, I'm maybe harsher and harder to understand, violent at times but, carnal desires are mortal feelings that forsaken for some and not for others."

"But you feel them."

"Enough."

Suddenly, Hyde's body fell backwards in the chair as if it by a force and Jane watched as Hyde's body contorted until the red eyes were gone and the rigor body language to reveal Dani's distraught eyes and labored breaths. "Enough," Dani whispered then taking in a deep breath in and released it. She tilted her head toward Jane, "Hyde is my business and it's being cooperative."

"It got Faust shot," Jane argued. "I want to make sure it's not going to get all of us killed."

"Faust was shot in the bloody foot! He will heal."

"He was still shot, Danielle!"

"And here I am still with a healing wound," Dani argued, gesturing to the bullet wound on her shoulder. With her fingers, she bit her lip as she pulled the bullet out, prompting Jane to cringe. Dani then placed the bullet on the table. "What's with the line of questioning anyways?"

"It's nothing."

"Sounds like curiosity about my past, Jane." Dani then pulled out the ponytail, shaking her hair then added, "Hyde is not like Edward. You are trying to see if my half is going to become like my brother's. It has never killed and if anything, I have and live with it more than you know."

"Still-"

"Focus on the current situation at hand, Rizzoli," Dani argued. "You are so focused on Hyde and me, you are losing sight of the case."

"This case has you involved! You are in this with everyone else in this stupid secret world of yours. If Van Helsing left you in charge of this unit, he left it in the wrong hands because you've made more messes than cleaned them up."

Dani's body shot up with gritted teeth and a clenched hand. For a moment, Jane thought that she was going to get punched until Dani walked to the door and exited.

Jane sighed, "Fuckin great."

NF

"The bullet went through your foot. You should recover fine," Maura informed Faust as she pulled out the bullet. She rotated the bullet in the tweezers, taking in the sight of silver traces. "Do all supernaturals have an issue with silver," the doctor inquired.

"We have some issues, but it depends on certain people," Faust groaned as he moved his foot to keep it elevated. "Why?"

"I see silver color along the bullet but, with your blood all over it, I need it analyzed," Maura informed, placing the bullet in an evidence bag.

"Faustus," Crane greeted upon walking into the morgue. "As per typical, you are injured or here because of something criminal."

Faustus rolled his eyes. "Fuck off, Crane."

"Who do you think send the group after us," Maura inquired as she was scrubbing her hands of the blood. Faust shrugged, prompting Maura to give a pointed look. "Faust, one thing I learned from Detective Rizzoli is that there is no such thing as coincidences. You surely must know something?"

"It sounds like you're assuming, Doctor."

Maura crossed her arms in front of her chest. "Process of elimination," Maura argued.

"They could be after you also."

"That would be an obvious observation because it appears that the perpetrator does not wish to be found, Faustus."

The immortal crossed his arms in displeasure and Maura could finally see why Dani didn't fear Faust. There was an air of cowardice and a sense of opportunity in his eyes, it reflected that the man was one to take advantage of his situation as long as he gained something in the end.

"Alright Faust," Maura looked up to see Jane entering the morgue, "start talking about all your deals."

"I have client confidentiality," Faust argued.

"You're a lawyer or practicing doctor?" Faustus frowned and Jane smirked, "Also someone seems really determined to kill you."

Faust scoffed, "Impossible. I'm immortal."

"You seemed scared of being shot."

"It hurts like hell, Detective."

"That's not why," Jane turned to see Nina supporting Dani as they exited the elevator. Immediately, Maura grabbed hold of Dani with Doctor Crane and took her to another table. Jane peered over to see that the wound that Dani had was still bleeding which confused her. "I thought you were healing," Jane questioned.

"Me…too," Dani hissed as Maura placed gloves on and began to clean the wound.

"The bullet is not in here," Maura informed.

"That's because…I pulled it out."

Maura gave a serious expression. "Where is it," she questioned. Dani gestured to her pocket and Maura retrieved it, passing it to Doctor Crane. "Have Susie and Kent start an analysis immediately." She then brought her attention back to Dani, "You shouldn't have pulled the bullet out. You might have caused more damage."

"Why…do I feel…like a mortal?"

"What do you mean?"

"I…feel…tired…"

Maura looked up at Jane, "She's going into shock. I need to close the wound, clean any debris, and maybe give her blood."

"I'll check if we have a pack," Crane announced.

Dani lifted her head slightly, "It's not… an ordinary…bullet."

Jane turned on her heel, bringing her attention back to Faust who seemed to pale. "What do you know, Faust," the brunette questioned.

Faust licked his lips nervously, "I never met Xigbar and Randolf but, I know that they have sources that run deep."

"Did they organize the heist of the Vault?"

"Yes."

"What about the medallions?"

"I only know that it was a minor spell, but it has its flaws."

"What flaws?"

Faust shrugged then added, "That's all I know. I don't know how they have the Hyde formula, the medallions, or who they are working for."

"There are others?"

"Yes, the fact that you have bullets can cause us immortals to bleed and not heal. It's not a good sign at all."

"Here you go," Maura stated, pulling out a small fragment. She placed it aside and the wound began to heal quickly until it closed. "Does it hurt?"

Dani sat up and moved her arm slowly, "Not as much." She then moved to stand up but cringed and laid back down.

"I swear," Faust raised his hands up, "I only know what I know."

"You seem to know too much for them," Jane pointed out.

Faust hopped off the autopsy table and went on his knees. "Please protect me," he started to beg, "I know that I was an ass but, I'm a businessman and a person who used to believe in the good of humanity-"

"You think humanity is…stupid…Faust," Dani groaned.

Faust turned to Dani. "I get it, you don't trust me but, please Danielle!"

"Shut it, Faust," Jane spoke. She picked him up from the ground and gestured him to a chair, "We don't plan to send you back out there. You are only witness and one of our few leads that we have."

"So, what happens now," Frost inquired curiously.

"We work with what we have."

"And inform the Council," Adam added.

Suddenly, the elevator doors opened, prompting Jane and the others to look over to see two uniformed officers with Clayton and Dorian trailing behind. "Get up, Stevenson," Dorian ordered.

Before Dani could do so, the uniformed officers pulled the detective off the table. She hissed in pain but stood tall and placed her in handcuffs. "She's recovering from any injury," Maura informed.

"Why are you putting her in handcuffs," Frost demanded.

"Clayton, what are you doing," Adam approached the councilman.

Clayton took out a paper from his suit jacket and handed it to Adam, prompting him to open it. "The Council has declared Detective Danielle J. Stevenson will be removed from her position as lead detective immediately upon trial," he read.

"What," Jane questioned.

"Due to the instability of her condition-" Clayton started to explain.

"Instability," Dani questioned.

"-she may pose as a threat to the supernatural society or not."

"If she is?"

Clayton looked away and Adam's eyes widened while Dani shook her head. "Death," Dani mumbled.

At those words, Jane tried to reach Dani with Maura and Adam however, the guards stepped in front of them. "This barbaric," Maura pointed out, "Death should not be the answer."

"It is in the Contract," Dorian shrugged.

Do something you idiot, Hyde ordered. Dani didn't move or react as Clayton looked at the detective. "The trial will happen tomorrow night," he informed the group. He then gestured for the officers to take Danielle into the elevator.

Dorian followed Clayton smirked at the audience he had. "I highly doubt you'll find anything to clear Danielle. You should inform her little girlfriend," Dorian stated, prompting Dani to almost lunge but was pulled back. Dorian laughed and gestured, "You see? No control."

At these words, Dani could hear Hyde still shouting to fight but, she closed her eyes and said softly, "No point." She then reopened her eyes and looked at Jane, "Forget about me. Think about the case only. Protect our people."

"Can we do anything to help," Maura inquired with Jane by her side.

"I don't know but I need to go into Dani's office to show that Hyde is not a menace," he explained. Adam unlocked the door to Dani's apartment and walked inside to the clean apartment.

After Dani's arrest, Jane had Korsak and Frankie to start putting out feelers in the supernatural world, mainly the Golden Mask hence they knew that word could spread. Finding out about names like Xigbar and Randolf might be easier if the names have float around before. Frost and Nina made sure Faust stayed put, keeping him in the warehouse's BRICK to go over history of the supernatural world.

They were missing something, and it appeared that something more sinister was involved.

"Has anyone called Regina," Maura inquired softly.

Adam shook his head. "I don't know if I should or not."

"You should," Jane answered, "she cares about Regina. I think…even in love with her but won't let her in. Dani needs someone by her side." Adam nodded and pulled out his phone to dial Regina.

Jane looked around the apartment, "It must not be a big office?"

"This apartment has been around for a while. It's been shifted around with name changes to make sure that she kept it," Adam informed. He then walked down the hallway to a door that didn't fit the rest of the interior of the apartment. The creature attempted to open the door, but the door didn't open, prompting him to cuss under his breath.

"What's wrong?"

"She locked her office." Adam then raised his hand, trying to feel for the key.

Jane sighed, leaning back against the wall. We are stuck in multiple areas. Now the politics are getting involved. How the fuck am I going to give closure to anyone, she thought. She could hear Adam speak to Regina, speaking softly about heading to the Council's jail cell. It made Jane remember when Maura was in the jail and how she would have given everything up for Maura.

Suddenly, she felt a soft touch on her hand, making her look over to see Maura next to her.

The doctor's expression says it all, pondering what Jane was thinking. "I'm at a loss," Jane said softly.

Maura raised Jane's hand and kissed her knuckles, "You'll figure it out. You do the gumshoe thing that you're known for."

"Faust is our only lead besides the body parts, the tainted necklaces, the bullet, and Xigbar with Randolf. Dani just got arrested and may be sentenced to death. I'm not feeling the gumshoe thing right now."

"I'm not even going to ask about this gumshoe whatever but…. aha," Adam stated aloud, finding the key that Dani hid behind a random piece of wall art. "We have access."
