AN: starting their separate journeys. Jane's first day at Quantico. A lot of introspection by Jane. Next chapter will be Maura's. Thanks to all who have left reviews, followed, and favorite, gives me encouragement to continue.
True to his word, when Jane had made touchdown in Washington Dulles national airport, agent Davies was there to pick her up on a professional capacity. He had pitched the open job to her, and he had convinced her that she would be a perfect permanent instructor. BPD and her legendary local feats were a source of pride and adding the FBI to her career credentials felt like a no brainer. Cameron was such a great recruiter for the job, although really- he had Maura to thank for the guest speaker encouragement to start. As Cameron drove her to her temporary lodging, Jane took the moment to analyze her current situation in silence- hoping Cameron wouldn't be offended. She insisted that she could get a cab instead- but he offered, and it made sense due to his overall knowledge of the headquarters and lodging. The brunette believed that after the undercover work in the jail, and the impact of stopping a misogynist from becoming an Agent- Maura could sense that Jane had been assessing her career. Maura had also pointed out that in her conversation with Angela, Jane now acknowledged that her love for her job was causing a majority of her life's trauma and heartache. All her loved ones supported her to do what she loved - but they also worried about her.
When she was younger, she never gave much of it a thought. Being a badass detective was the most appealing job. As she was getting older and she suffered losses she was slowly recovering from, she was now viewing need to progress or analyze her career. Now that Korsak wouldn't be there, and Frost was just a painful missing piece in her heart at BPD, Jane was facing a lot of thoughts about whether continuing being a detective was worth it. Imagining herself in Korsak's former role - she had a hard time picturing that as the role that would find fulfilling as she might of thought it would have been, years ago. BPD would benefit to have her as police sergeant, but her heart would not be in it. Perhaps BPD feels synonymous with psychos trying to kill her, her family, and loved ones - either directly or indirectly. That felt like something she needed to change, if just to decrease the odds of her loved ones getting hurt as blowback.
Perhaps the most painful of all, was losing something she didn't even think she wanted in the first place. Jane had loved Casey off and on for a long time. She was extremely attracted to him, around him she felt giddy. and like a teenager with a huge crush. However, after they ways he had treated her with the most important news of his life she didn't feel she could trust him. If he had gotten injured and paralyzed and he felt that would stop her from loving him, he didn't understand her at all. If she loved him, he should have trusted that she would be there for him and even if he didn't want to subject her to being the wife of a paraplegic, he should have had the courtesy, love, and respect to let her choose for herself. It worked out in the end however, because once they had gotten engaged and she found out she was pregnant, she realized she was forcing something that wasn't right.
When she saw herself raising her child- Casey wasn't the one she wanted by her side. She had never met any man who would fit the bill to spend her life with raising a child. Granted when Maura offered to be there when it ended with Casey- Maura was already a staple in her life she had grown to expect, so accepting her help seemed like a no brainer. They had it all planned out and Jane was even looking forward to it all, until she lost the baby. She didn't know what hurt more - to realize that deep-down she looked forward to being a mother and lost that chance, or the fact that once again one of her choices in her job ended up hurting her loved ones. To have to hear it from Maura whose eyes also belied an unexpected deeper sadness than she could have expected to hear from someone who lost a child not their own. Jane sighed a deep sigh as buildings of DC came to view, she pulled herself to the present.
Cameron was in charge of finding talent to work at headquarters. Headquarters was operationally what most agents strove for toward mature part of their careers. Things were unsettling for Jane. Everything was so formal and sanitized and she also had a deep distrust of FBI because how they would take over cases. She had been going through working on her onboarding packet at the FBI. It included orientations as well as so much paperwork. She needed to get over her distrust of the FBI because now she was becoming one of them. She enjoyed watching the recruits doing their exercise drills along the paths to the teaching buildings. Cameron was the perfect professional; he had not brought up the fact that he had to raincheck a meal he had to skip out on their rendezvous in Boston. He was playing the perfect role as guide. At the end of the day, after taking her from areas of her orientation to submitting her paperwork- he also took her back to her lodging. Jane opened a relocation checklist that Maura had drew up for her when Maura found out she took the job. Maura handily shared with Jane on her phone. Sooner rather than later she would follow the checklist to get an apartment she could possibly call home.
"Jane, I'm glad you decided to take this role. You will be an amazing asset to our training program. Your experience in high profile cases and unique perspectives will bring a lot to the role."
"Cameron, its ok don't feel uncomfortable with where things left off. I'm more than capable of separating work from personal life. You had work, I understand it. I'm not the run of the mill girl you run into on dating apps. We can still do the raincheck, but perhaps once I get settled in a bit more and understand what our work together might entail." the former detective spoke with ease, hoping to make it clear that water was under the bridge. "Besides, not like I kept you super up to date while I was off in Paris for a month. Hopefully you don't hold that against me - Paris is a whole different time zone and I was thousands of miles away."
"None taken Jane. I can imagine that this change leaving everyone behind and a job you love, you would need a vacation." Cameron winked. "I'll leave you to it." With that Jane closed the door eager, to put her first day behind her.
