Jane's phone rang and her mother's image appeared on the screen flashing momentarily. Sunday morning was relatively quiet in her new apartment. Cameron was still over from their date Saturday night, and he was currently sleeping in her bed. They had gone to a movie and ended with a night cap. Typically they would stay over at Jane's after dates- since Jane wanted to be able to be available on Saturday Morning for her weekly call with Maura. Jane had missed this week's Saturday morning call with Maura since Maura had to be on shift at Hope's clinic. She knew that Maura was pursuing more permanent time with the clinic as a neonatologist. She was very proud of her friend for her accomplishments; however, it was bittersweet because that meant Maura had less time to spend with her on in person calls.
Cameron was easy to talk to and get along with and that is why she started dating him, but there were things that she wanted to tell Maura about first, since she was who she had always gone to in the past. It came with the territory of someone knowing you fully- through thick and thin- for seven years. Cameron might someday fill that gap, but right now that wasn't the case. She picked up her mother's call, realize she was usually the next person she usually talked to. Probably the only other person she chose to talk on the phone to when she could tolerate it. She tolerated it much more from a couple hundred miles away.
"Hi Ma. How are you doing?"
"Janie, glad I caught you. What are you up to? Just thought I'd catch you up on the family dinner gossip since you can't really be there for them." Angela Rizzoli was indeed wanting to check on her daughter, but she also wanted to tease some action into her daughter. When Jane was expecting a baby, she saw the amount of happiness that Maura and Jane had looking forward to raising that child together. At first Angela was very upset that Jane had broken off the engagement with Casey but was soon very glad when she had found out that he chose his career over her and consequently also the unborn child.
"Ma, you know I hate gossip. I'm having my coffee this morning and getting ready to also work on getting more furniture for my apartment. The apartment doesn't quite feel like home yet." The apartment she had settled on was near the FBI headquarters. She definitely got paid better than at BPD, but the cost of living in DC was significantly more, so her apartment was smaller than her Boston apartment, especially smaller than the one that she had just moved from that was a friend of Maura's. She had downsized all her items once she moved in, but to the point that everything seemed sparse. It was a new start after all. She was lost in her thoughts when she heard her mother's comment.
"Maura had brought Edward to family dinner. He seems so smitten with her, I wonder why it never worked out, and why it wouldn't work out now. Seems a shame, she seems so lonely since you left Jane. Now you've got Cameron and she has got Edward if only she would give him a chance." Jane could feel her shoulder tense up as her mother droned on her last train of thought. Cameron walked in the room, and she pointed at the phone. He nodded in understanding and started walking to the coffee pot.
"Ma! Are you being serious right now? We literally threw her a divorce party!" Jane whined. "Why on earth would you throw her a divorce party one moment, and another matchmake her to the same man!"
"Janie! I didn't throw that divorce party, you did!"
"Well, you helped me. I mean really? Is it a marriage if you thought it ended so many years ago? Look ma I don't want to talk about this right now. Cameron just woke up and I just want to enjoy my weekend. I don't want to have to think about you meddling in Mauras or my life."
"Oh, come on Jane, now that you are gone, I don't get to speak to your or Maura much anymore. Maura barely even comes home some nights!"
Janes stomach tensed at the comment, that last part sent Jane's mind reeling.
"That is it Ma! Maura is a grown woman she can make her own decisions. Besides she probably is just busy studying for her extended residency in neonatology. Between being Medical Examiner of Massachusetts and trying to do another residency in a different medical specialty! I doubt she has time to even date!"
"Shame on you Jane. Just because it didn't work out with you doesn't mean she can't work out with others! Maura's a catch. I could have had a doctor in the family! I swear Janie sometimes you are so dense!" Angela hung up and huffed at the phone. On one hand Angela was happy Jane was away from danger. On the other hand, she had saw how Maura and Jane were getting ready for a baby.
"What just happened?" Jane spoke aloud, dumbfounded. Her mother had hung up on her. She picked up her phone and tried to call her mom. Upon two more hangups she decided to text.
"What the hell ma!" Jane angrily texted.
"Jane think about it! You told Maura before your baby's father and then you proceeded to will your child to Maura if something ever happened to you." a fired back text response came back quickly.
"That's what Best Friends do Ma!"
"Don't you lie to me Janie! She was starting up your child's college fund and had a sidecar with your name on it on her motorcycle! How dense can you be! Things get complicated and you lose the baby, and you flee Boston just so you don't have to face her for thinking you lost the baby!"
That was a gut punch. A serious one. Jane did feel like her actions did lose the baby. On top of that though she could not believe what her mother was saying.
"For god's sake ma! She's my best friend!"
"Jane think for one second! Who in your world has ever gotten you to do something you didn't want to do!"
For a moment Jane hesitated wanted to say Casey but then realized that even with Casey she would not leave BPD. Yet here she was BPD-less and all because she was running away from what she felt after losing the baby.
Satisfied that she had made her point and frustrated with her late thirties' daughter, Angela shoved her phone in her back pocket and went back to resuming her cleaning of the kitchen.
Monday morning came fast for Maura. Walking into the morgue with the latest findings from the lab, Maura pored over the notes. "Well, there was acrylic lacquer on her long fingernails like I thought, I thought it might have been a chip and first, but it was too fine a sheen." speaking to her lab tech and confirming it to herself.
"The blunt trauma location tells me this has got to be a vehicular manslaughter despite it being a possible drowning on top of that. The diatom tests reveal death was not from the water since water had not entered the alveolar spaces of lungs, so she likely was deceased before she ended up in the water. We have a lead and now we just need to figure out how to find whatever was at the end of this white acrylic lacquer."
Frankie walked into the morgue hoping to get some leads.
"Hey Maura, please tell me you have some good news for me, I'm not finding anyone to talk and the footage near the body of water she was found at have no drop off points recordings where I could get any leads. This feels like another cold case if we don't find something soon."
"Actually, I just got some lab results- can you have Nina look up any usage of white acrylic lacquer in the use of paint of cars? Years ago, it used to be the only option but as of late, car companies typically lean toward the urethane option since it lasts longer and chips less. If you can also find any white cars and what that sample might look like then cross reference it against any of the boyfriend's or his family and acquaintances? If that result is too large, I'll have to think of an alternate lead to go on."
"This is great Maura; I can see why the other Rizzoli had better numbers on me!" Frankie ran upstairs eager to find anything toward the investigation.
Maura leaned back in her chair, wondering what the other Rizzoli was up to. She had missed their regular call yesterday; she was kind of embarrassed of the situation that occurred with hope since it also brought some questions she wanted to think about on her own. She felt like talking to Jane would make her feel very uncomfortable since Jane would be sure to ask how her shift went and she was on the precipice of wanting to talk to anyone about the new revelation. So instead of calling Jane she decided to text her that she was busy with rounds and Hope's clinic. It definitely wasn't a lie - just a stretch. She needed to analyze the situation and she didn't want to talk to Jane until she had some kind of bearing.
A/N: I love how the mothers speak facts to their oblivious daughters hehe
