Author's Note: Before we begin, I have an announcement to make. In my last chapter, I announced that I would be doing a rotation of updates with this and the other Marvel/Disney Show crossovers. However, it has been pointed out to me that it would take too long, and after going through it once, I agree. So I am revoking the rotation and decided to update these chapters whenever. After all, I don't want to wait another month to work on this.
Anyway, I would have uploaded this a lot sooner, but I had many different ideas for how to do this, so this took a lot of rewrites. I had to pick out the right song to parody here and whether or not I'd keep Howlin' Harriet or use a Marvel monster. My brain went back and forth on this a whole lot before it finally settled with the best choice.
The song featured here is a parody of "Remains of the Day" from Corpse Bride.
Enjoy the chapter.
"Scratch! Loki! I got a situation!" Molly said after gathering her friends to her room.
"So do I." Loki said. "It's called 'Molly McGee'."
"Jokes aside," Molly said, "I'm in need of a best friend. Now, don't get me wrong. You two will always be my number one."
"That is systematically impossible." Loki said. "There can only be one number one. And I volunteer Scratch."
"Hey!" Scratch cried out.
"But I need a HUMAN best friend." Molly continued. "Now, I've narrowed it down to three amazing candidates." She pointed to a blackboard with three pictures of different girls on it. "Libby, Sheela, and Kat. They're all so different on paper, but guess what they have in common?"
"I don't care about any of them?" Scratch asked.
"They're all girls?" Loki asked.
"Well, that last one is true," Molly said, "But they are all Wilder Scouts! And we're going camping tonight! Four strong female trailblazers in the wilderness. This is how you make lifelong friends. We'll probably sit together at lunch, then be roommates in college, run for political office on a shared platform. I mean, we're basically choosing a future leader of our nation here!"
"You're way too excited about this." Loki said.
"Honestly, I don't see what the big deal is." Scratch said. "I don't have a best friend, and I…"
"SCRATCH! MY BESTEST BEST FRIEND!" A new ghost appeared out of nowhere and wrapped his arms around Scratch in an overwhelming embrace. He was a big ghost with a goofy smile on his face. His appearance even spooked Loki.
"You were saying?" Molly asked smugly."
"This guy?" Scratch asked. "No, he isn't my best friend. He's more like an annoying co-worker."
"Hi. I'm Geoff." The new ghost introduced himself. "That's G-E-O-F-F."
"Nobody asked how it's spelled." Scratch said.
"Not to be confused with Jeff, J-E-F-F."
"Nobody's writing this down." Scratch kept trying to say.
"You got one of those too, huh?" Loki asked. "Back on Asgard, I got three of them. Fandral was by far the worst."
"Wow! I can't believe Scratch is partners with the legendary Loki." Geoff said greeting the Trickster. "It's such an honor to meet you, sir."
"Well, at least you have good taste." Loki said.
"So question." Geoff said. "How did you die?"
Loki turned his head. "I'd rather not talk about it."
"Look, Geoff," Scratch said, "What are you even doing here?"
"Remember, you promised we'd hang out today." Geoff said pulling out a calendar. "See? Like you said, the second Friday after never."
Scratch took a good look at the calendar and it was already obvious that Geoff edited the calendar. "Seems doctored. Well, hate to break it to you, Geoff, but I've got a lot of R&R to do today."
"But Scratch, you can't rest now. You, me, and Loki have to get ready for our trip to Camp Brighton."
Loki widened his eyes. "Which Loki? Is there another Loki here? I know you're not talking about me."
"Loki, I'm inviting you on this trip to help you be a better person." Molly said. "Making friends at school was great. Now, onto your next step, which is making friends at a camping trip. Don't worry. It's never too late to join the troop."
"Uh…" Loki darted his eyes around until he found a pamphlet with the words "Wilder Scouts" on it. He instantly smiled before picking it up and opening it. He read the print on it before finding something that made him smile. "Oh, wow, Molly. I really wish I would. I really do. But there's a little flaw in your plan. I can't go."
"What? Why?" Molly asked.
"Well, according to this pamphlet, the Wilder Scouts is an all-girl troop. Now, being a boy, I'm pretty sure I'd be the odd one out. Scratch can turn invisible, but I can't really hide myself."
"Oh." Molly said remembering the rule. "That's right. The Wilder Scouts are all girls, aren't they? Guess you can't come after all."
"Yep. Too bad." Loki said with a proud smile. "If it weren't for that rule, I'd be roughing it with you and the rest of those girls who's names I've already forgotten. Love to, but can't."
"Hey." Geoff said. "Why don't you just change into a girl?"
Loki's smiled instantly dropped. "Shut up! Shut up! Shut up!"
Molly turned to Geoff curiously. "What was that?"
"If Loki wants to join the Wilder Scouts, he can just change into his girl form." Geoff said.
"I said, shut up!"
"It's a little known fact that Loki is genderfluid. Part of his shapeshifting powers." Geoff continued not hearing Loki. "He can change from a boy to a girl whenever he wants."
"Why won't you shut up?"
But the damage was already done. Hearing that fact about the Asgardian made Molly widen a big smile and expand her eyes. Loki groaned in frustration.
"You can turn into a girl?" Molly asked excitedly. "Show me! Show me!"
Loki sighed as he surrendered himself. "Fine." He closed his eyes and reached his arms to his sides. A green smoke surrounded part of his body and his body began to shrink slightly. His black hair got longer, his stomach shrank, and he had lady fingernails coated in green.
This new Lady Loki spoke with a feminine voice. "There. Happy?"
Molly was more than happy. She was elated. "This is great! Before, you were Lukas. Now, you are… Lucy!" She jumped over to Loki and hugged her with just one hand. "This is perfect! Now, we can all enjoy a full-on camping experience with the Wilder Scouts! Thanks, Geoff!"
"Yeah." Loki said turning her hateful eyes to the new ghost. "Thanks a lot."
"This is going to be great!" Molly said. "We'll roast marshmallows, sleep in tents, tell ghost stories."
"Ghost stories?" Scratch asked. "As in scares? You know, this could be a chance to work on my scare report."
"Oh, Scratch!" Geoff cheered hugging his "friend". "You really are the best!"
Scratch sighed. "You're not coming."
"Riiiiiiiiight." Geoff said before slipping in a wink.
Scratch sighed again. "This is going to be a long weekend."
Camp Brighton was the perfect field of forest for the gang of preteen girls, consisting of Molly, Loki (who went by Lucy), Libby, Sheela, and Kat.
"So how do you know Lucy again, Molly?" Kat asked.
"Uh… she's Lukas' twin sister." Molly lied. "So, does anyone know anything about setting a campsite or lifelong friendships or…"
"Not me." Libby said. "I'm only here because my mom said that exposure to fresh air and kids my age would help me." Suddenly, a butterfly flew into her mouth nearly killing her.
Loki chuckled. "I have to admit. A small part of me was hoping that would happen."
The pink-haired girl, Kat, helped Libby up and examined the area. "The key to a cozy campfire is location. I think we should set camp… here."
The bespectacled girl, Sheela, clapped her hands to get everyone's attention. "We're losing daylight! Kat, you find the flint. Molly, you gather firewood. Libby, try to stay upright. And Lucy, you check around for wild animals that might come after us."
"You're asking me to look for bears?" Loki asked.
"I'll help." Molly said. "Might help find firewood too."
"Oh, goodie." Loki groaned with an eye roll.
Molly and Loki searched the forest. Loki looked around with very little interest. Molly helped too while picking up twigs and wooden planks for the campfire. During their search, they came across Scratch who was filling his mouth with berries.
"Scratch!" Molly gasped. "You can't eat those berries! They're poisonous!"
"You know I'm already dead, right?" Scratch asked.
"Oh, right."
"So how's the hunt for the best friend going?" Scratch asked.
"Not bad." Molly said. She pulled out notebook with a cart in it. "These scorecards have everything I'm looking for in a best friend. Creativity, smarts, generosity, a deep passion for fuzzy socks, leadership, and most importantly, the X-factor."
"What's the X-factor?" Loki asked.
"That's just it. I don't know." Molly said. "It's indescribable and hard to explain."
"So let me see if I'm getting this right. You're grading the other Wilder Scouts and whoever you judge to be the best gets to be your best friend?" Loki asked chuckling a little in amusement. "And you don't see the problem with that?"
"No problem at all." Molly said.
Loki kept chuckling "Oh, this will be a sight to see."
For the rest of the day, Molly has been traveling with her fellow Wilder Scouts doing lots of camp activities with them. In her eyes, Kat and Sheela were neck and neck racking up points in her graph. Libby on the other hand wasn't just falling behind; she kept getting herself in a lot of trouble. Luckily, everyone finally rested after sunset around the campfire.
"So, quick question," Molly said readying her chart, "Is anyone interested in sharing stories that—I don't know—highlight their best qualities?"
"That's boring." Loki said. "This is a camping trip and it's nighttime. How about we do something more traditional like a scary story? And as it so happens, I have one that'll scare your socks off."
"Really?" Libby asked. "I'm quite intrigued."
"Yeah. Tell it to us, Lucy." Sheela said.
Loki gave a mischievous smile before beginning her tale in song form. Behind her back, with a snap of her fingers, several tiny wisps slipped out in green smoke. They flew off in the forest where they played fast jazz music.
Loki:
Gather around, girls. Lend me your ears
For I'm about to fill your hearts full of fears
I'll give you a ghost story you'll never forget
The grim tale of Brighton's own Howlin' Harriet
In the trees, the wisps began to sing as backup. Their voices spooked most of the Wilder Scouts.
Chorus:
Run, run when you sense something foul
'Cause that's how you know she's on the prowl
You might think it's the wind or the hoot of an owl
But you know who it is when you hear her howl
Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah
Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah
Loki:
Well, back in the day, when Brighton was freshly set
There was a village woman named Harriet
She was a friendly face. One of the crowd
Until one day, she did something that wasn't allowed
Now, in this modern age, it's not really a crime
But selling uncured salami on Wednesday was illegal at the time
Chorus:
Run, run when you sense something foul
'Cause that's how you know she's on the prowl
You might think it's the wind or the hoot of an owl
But you know who it is when you hear her howl
Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah
Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah
YEAH, YEAH, YEAH, YEAH
YEAH, YEAH, YEAH, YEAH
There was a brief music break. During which, Loki used his magic to send chills to the girls' backs with ghostly illusions. After that, Loki returned to the song.
Loki:
YEAH
So the girl made her sales in the market one day
When the crowd noticed her crime and chased her away
Now, she didn't have time to gather up her stuff
Just a few handfuls of food had to be enough
But along the way running out of town
She lost her shoes after she fell down
Then, just out of the city limits, she wasn't well
After a long day of running, she just couldn't tell
That there was a train track upon which she fell
Chorus:
And then…
Loki:
She heard something
Chorus:
And then…
Loki:
Was that the sound of a coming train
Chorus:
And then…
Loki:
She was too exhausted to get up
Chorus:
AND THEN…
Loki:
And then, everything went black
Now, the only thing found were some severed toes
But this is where the supernatural part goes
For Harriet's spirit still roams the night
Under the glow of the full moonlight
SO DON'T LET HER FIND YOU OR YOU'LL PAY THE COST
FOR IT IS YOUR TOES SHE WANTS TO REPLACE WHAT SHE LOST
SOON ENOUGH, IT'LL BE YOUR TOES THAT SHE'LL GET
AND THAT'S THE GRIM TALE OF HOWLIN' HARRIEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEET
Chorus:
RUN, RUN WHEN YOU SENSE SOMETHING FOUL
'CAUSE THAT'S HOW YOU KNOW SHE'S ON THE PROWL
YOU MIGHT THINK IT'S THE WIND OR THE HOOT OF AN OWL
BUT YOU KNOW WHO IT IS WHEN YOU HEAR HER HOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOWL
Loki:
YEAH
Libby, Kat, and Sheela screamed before running to their sleeping bags. Loki, brushing her shoulder proudly, was approached by Molly.
"You couldn't give it a happy ending," Molly asked, "Like maybe Harriet could have befriended campers instead of taking their toes."
"No chance, McGee. It's my not-so-guilty pleasure to scare the daylights out of little girls." Loki said. "Besides, it's based on an actual folktale. I read it on the way here in case I needed to tell a good story." She then gave a small chuckle. "A ghost that steals toes. I swear, over the years, ghost stories on Midgard keep getting more stupid."
"Well… to each their own, I guess." Molly said.
Loki sneaked a confident look at Scratch's general direction and gave the ghost a wink. It was then that Scratch knew what to do.
A few minutes later, all the girls were tucking themselves in their sleeping bags ready to sleep, but the ghost story that Loki told earlier still lingered in their minds.
"Think these socks are thick enough to protect me from Howlin' Harriet?" Kat asked.
"Oh, I don't know." Loki said with a smile. "I mean, we are talking about a ghost. You know, a spirit that can phase through anything?"
"Ghosts aren't real. Just the product of an overactive imagination." Sheela said before closing her sleeping bag.
"Yeah, ghosts. Totally not real." Molly said with a forceful laugh. "Who'd believe that? Not me. Oh, we do laugh."
"Not exactly an actress, are you?" Loki asked.
Everyone was fully in their bags ready to sleep. But Loki stayed awake. She knew it was showtime any minute, so she eagerly awaited. She could feel a scare in the air, especially when she heard a howl in the woods.
The howl woke everyone from their sleep and they jumped out of their sleeping bags. They huddled together to see a floating figure reveal itself from the trees. It was the shape of a hovering woman in a dress. Her bare feet were hanging off the bottom, but only one of them had toes. Her messy hair came with twigs and sticks. Even when she was clear, she was still pitch black, but with a green glow around her. She howled one more time scaring most of the girls except for Loki and Molly.
"HOWLIN' HARRIET!" Kat panicked. "SHE'S REAL AND SHE'S COMING FOR OUR TOES!" She ran away with Sheela and Libby.
When the other three left, Molly gave an unamused look to a clearly-amused trickster. "Is this your trick?"
"In a way." Loki said. "Nice work following after my set-up, Scratch. Kudos."
"Hey!" Scratch yelled coming out of the trees. Both Molly and Loki were surprised that he wasn't the glowing-green figure. "Don't praise that buffoon."
"Wait." Loki said. "If you're here, then who's this?"
"Who do you think? That's Geoff taking my scare." Scratch said. "Seriously, you boob. What's with the sticks? It's a bit much."
"Aw, really, Scratch? I don't know. I mean, I think my detail work really helps sell the illusion." Scratch said, from behind Scratch. Everyone was both surprised and scared that Geoff appeared with a bad disguise and he was clearly not the floating figure.
"What?" Molly asked. "But if it's not Loki, Scratch, or Geoff, when who.." Her eyes widened realizing who it really was. "THE REAL HARRIET!"
"WHAT?!" Loki asked. "I thought that was a dumb folktale!"
Howlin' Harriet turned to Loki and attempted to claw at her, but she dodged out of the way. She jumped behind the bushes and Molly, Scratch, and Geoff followed.
"Well, that folktale is about to make us history." Scratch said.
"How do we get rid of her?" Molly asked. "Loki, any ideas?"
"I don't know." Loki said. "All I could dig up is that she's after toes."
"Toes?" Molly asked before getting an idea. "I got it! Let's give her what she wants!"
"I like it." Scratch said. "Who's toes are we taking? The pink headed girl, right?"
"I'd suggest Sheela." Loki said. "She seemed way too bossy for me."
"You three just keep Harriet away from the campers." Molly said. "I'll get us some toes." She ran toward the campers. While she was doing her part, Loki and the ghosts did theirs.
For the next few minutes, Loki, Scratch, and Geoff did everything they could to divert Howlin' Harriet's attention. Scratch and Geoff changed shape into large feet. The ghost went after them and they always slipped from them. They went to rest, so Loki was tagged in. She removed her shoes and walked out wiggling her toes on the grass. When Harriet saw her, she rushed forward to tackle her. Unfortunately, it turned out to be an illusion. The projection dropped letting Harriet drift wildly in the air. She turned and saw a hundred other Loki fakes coming from behind the trees surrounding her. She howled in anger trying to find the real one.
"This little Harriet went nowhere. This little Harriet stayed alone." Loki taunted. "This little Harriet wanted little piggies, but this little Harriet had none. And this little Harriet went…"
Finally, Harriet found Loki and grabbed her by the throat. She pressed her onto the tree growling angrily.
"Oh. You found me." Loki chuckled nervously. "Um… Call it a draw?"
Harriet was about to deliver a strike when suddenly, Scratch and Geoff attacked her covering her whole head with her body. In the panic, Howlin' Harriet tossed Loki across the woods. The trickster landed right before Molly and Libby, who had just crafted lifelike toes made of wood and added some green for toenails.
"Lo.. Lucy!" Molly said almost saying the trickster's real name. "How's it going?"
"Well, I think we have her where we want her." Loki said. "Seriously, though, tell me you have a plan. This ghost is persistent."
"We just finished." Libby said presenting the toes to Loki.
"What? You seriously think this is going to work?"
"Of course. I used my foot for reference."
The sound of Harriet's unholy howl echoed through the forest cueing Libby to slip the fake toes in her sleeping bag. She, Molly, and Loki hid behind the bushes just before Harriet emerged having just removed the ghosts from her. She looked around until she stopped to stare at the fake toes. She looked closer to inspect them.
"This is ridiculous." Loki whispered. "It'll be a miracle if this works."
Then, a soft smile grew on Harriet's face. "Toes. Pretty toes." She picked up the fake toes and put them on her foot. Just then, the black, green-glowing monster changed into a nicer-looking, blue village woman that she was supposed to be. She disappeared into the sky leaving everyone happy while Loki was mostly surprised.
"Well. Hallelujah."
By the time the morning arrived, Libby, Sheela, and Kat were convinced that their Howlin' Harriet experience was just a dream. The scoutmaster emerged from her nap ready to take the girls back to town. While she did that, Molly had a talk with Scratch and Loki.
"About time this was over." Loki said. "The sooner we get home, the sooner I can return to my male form."
"Why?" Molly asked. "You don't have any issues being a girl, do you?"
"No. But I don't want to be a girl at times when its more convenient for you and your schemes. If I change genders, it'll be because I want to, not because you want me to."
"Okay. I get it."
"You know, between you and Geoff, I barely have any time for myself." Scratch said. "So I sincerely hope you found a human bestie so I can have a break, Molly."
"No one can replace you or Loki," Molly said, "But I think I found a winner: Libby!"
"The wallflower?" Loki asked.
"Yeah! You know that chart I showed you yesterday? Well, after her impressive craftsmanship and her willingness to help us get Howlin' Harriet at peace, she has demonstrated something that can only be described as the X-factor. I just hope she wants to be my friend too."
Molly turned around, and immediately, Libby was standing there offering a friendship bracelet to her. She gave one question to her. "Molly, wanna be my best friend?"
"I don't believe it." Loki commented.
"I understand if the answer is no." Libby said. "I'm not really for everyone. I'm kind of an acquired…"
"BESTIE!" Molly cheered tackling Libby and giving her a hug.
Loki and Scratch stepped back to give the girls some space. "So what now, Scratch?"
"Well, I'm not going to tell the council that the real Howlin' Harriet scared the kids." Scratch said. "That way, we're one scare report closer to returning you back to life. Oh, and there's one more thing."
Loki raised an eyebrow. "And what's that?"
"Oh, Geoff!" Scratch called out summoning the other ghost who likes spelling his name.
"Yes, buddy?" Geoff asked.
"You won't believe this. Loki just asked to be your friend too."
Loki widened her eyes. "Wait, what?"
"REALLY?!" Geoff asked excitedly before hugging Loki. "OH, THIS IS GREAT!"
"NO!" Loki yelled out. "I'm not your friend!"
"Riiiiiiiight." Geoff said before winking at her.
Loki groaned turning her angry face at Scratch. "What the Helheim, Scratch?"
"Sorry, Loki. But this way, Geoff will have less time for me."
"Oh, this will be the best." Geoff said. "The adventures of Loki, which is L-O-K-I…"
"Everyone knows how my name is spelled." Loki growled.
"And Geoff, which is G-E-O-F-F."
Loki gave a very low growl. "Scratch, you're dead to me."
"I'm dead to everyone." Scratch said smugly. "It comes with the job."
Author's Note: And that's the end of this chapter. I'm adding this little note at the end to let you know something. I had Loki tell the Howlin' Harriet story because I came to terms with the fact that that's the best time for my song parody. I couldn't have Libby sing it because, no offense to her, she's not a good singer, so I had to substitute her with Loki. It seemed like a creative choice on my part.
Any and all comments are welcome.
