Author's Note: Hey, everybody. Great news. After about half-a-year, this story finally has a new update. Now, I can't promise this will be a weekly thing, but I'll update this story as often as I can. I promise.
The new cover art is thanks to the Deviantart user, Framraw, who has generously given me permission to use it.
Anyway, the song featured here is "Snow Day", which was already in the canon show.
Hope you like this return. Any and all comments are welcome.
Lightning struck from the inside of a mechanical facility in the snowy mountains of Norway. Inside this facility, two men fought and clashed around a machine which was warming up in power. One of those men was Thor. The other was Loki, an adult Loki.
With his scepter in hand, Loki swung it at his brother, but Thor blocked it with his hammer, which the then threw it at Loki. The Trickster saw it coming and dodged allowing Mjolnir to crash right at a power generator behind him. Loki raised his scepter again and fired a blue blast which sent Thor flying backwards. The Thunderer landed on one knee and summoned his hammer back into his hand.
"You can't stop it, Thor!" Loki exclaimed. "Thanks to the power of the Convergence, I'll finally have my own Bifrost, and I'll have the power to send my armies and allies anywhere I desire, including the heart of Asgard!"
"Loki, this is madness!" Thor yelled. "There can't be more than one Bifrost!
"Well, you know me…"
Thor was taken by surprise when he was blasted from behind. As he collapsed on his face, he looked back and saw Loki. The one he was talking to disappeared revealing himself to be an illusion.
"I never was one for the rules." The real Loki finished.
Loki raised his staff ready to impale it into Thor's chest. However, as he thrusted it down, Thor raised his hammer and blocked it. The impact created an impulse of electricity that shot electric shocks around the two. The shocks affected all the machinery that connected to the main portal generator built at the center of the lab.
The impulse made Loki fly backwards and land on the stairs that led to the generator. He looked up at it and saw a light generate from it. The light was made up of a multitude of colors like a rainbow. Loki grinned at it and emerged to reach it.
When Thor returned to his feet, he noticed all the other machines connected to the main generator. They were all emitting an electrical discharge either blowing fuses or shutting down small parts. Either way, Thor realized that the lab became unstable, and Loki was about to jump into the center of it all.
"Wait!" Thor cried out just as Loki was a footstep away from the rainbow portal. "Do not go in there!"
"You may have ruined everything, Thor, but you can't stop me from escaping!" Loki said.
"But the portal is unstable!" Thor warned. "If you go in there, there's no telling what will happen!"
"I already know what's going to happen! It'll take me away from you!" Loki replied before jumping into the portal.
"NO!" Thor cried out, but it was too late. Loki had already gone.
Once he was inside, Loki felt the surge of energy flow through his body. At first, he felt great, but after a quick moment, he began to feel pain surging around his body. He looked down at his body seeing white cracks from around his body. He felt them as they formed and he screamed from the top of his lungs as he was finally torn apart.
"AAAAAAAAHHHHHH!"
Loki gasped loudly as he got up from his bed. He was breathing heavy, and it felt like he was sweating. He looked at his body and saw that he was still a kid. As he gazed outside, he saw the snow fall over Brighton.
Loki sighed in relief. "How was that worse to experience a second time?"
After getting dressed, he headed to the living room expecting Molly and Darryl to be there too ready for school. Instead, the two of them were watching the reporter on TV. He could see the high anticipation on their faces.
"What's up with you two?" he asked.
"Shh. They're about to announce the schools closed for the snow day!" Darryl said.
"Schools close on snow days in Midgard?" Loki asked.
"Uh, yeah! Don't they in Asgard?" Molly asked.
"It doesn't snow in Asgard." Loki answered.
"Well, you're in luck! Because if school is closed for today, we get to have the best snow day ever!" Molly proclaimed.
"They're about to announce it!" Darryl said as the reporter appeared.
"Good morning! I'm Joanie Pataky! I know all you kids at home are watching to see which schools are closed, so let's get down to business. Snow business! Hehe. Perfektborg… closed! Mewline… closed! Oconohaw… closed! Closed! Closed! Closed! And… that's it."
"What? No!" Molly yelled. "That's every town around us!"
Loki shrugged. "Humans, am I right?"
"Hold on a tick." The reporter said. "We've got late-breaking news! There's also a snow day for… Brighton!"
Molly and Darryl both smiled and jumped into the air. "SNOW DAY!" They danced around the living room while Loki watched with a disturbed look.
"Well, there's something that's going to live rent-free in my head forever." He commented.
"I'm going our to play with Becca and Charlie!" Darryl said running outside with his winter gear on.
Loki looked outside seeing the intense snow fall on the neighborhood. He gave a skeptical glare. "Um, are you sure the weather's nice enough to play in?"
"Oh, it's perfectly fine." Molly said. "Come on. Let's go get Scratch."
"What for?"
"FOR A SNOW DAY!" Molly cheered once she got Loki and Scratch side by side in front of her.
"I was dreaming about waffles before you curse-summoned me." Scratch sighed heavily. "You know that whole 'rest in peace' thing? You're ruining that for me."
"Sorry, bud, this couldn't wait because today is a snow day!" Molly cheered. She pulled out a lift from a winter-themed treasure box. "This, my friends, is a list of all the fun things we have to do on a snow day. It comes with illustrations." She showed it to the boys. "We've got sledding."
"Why am I pushing?" Loki asked.
"We got snow ball fights."
"Why am I juggling?" Scratch asked. "You know I don't even know how to juggle."
"We got snow cones made from real snow."
"That yellow stuff better be lemon." Loki said.
"And that's just the beginning of the list! And best of all, Loki gets to experience snow for the very first time! Aren't you excited?"
"What?" Loki asked. "When did I ever say I didn't experience snow?"
"Just ten minutes ago, remember?" Molly asked.
"I said it doesn't snow in Asgard." Loki said. "I've seen plenty of snow in Jotunheim."
"Yoto-what-now?" Molly asked.
"Jotunheim. You know how your world is Midgard and mine is Asgard? Well, both worlds are connected to seven other worlds as well as each other. One of those realms is Jotunheim, a frozen wasteland occupied by the savage Frost Giants. They've been enemies of Asgard for hundreds of years, which makes them handy allies in my schemes from time to time. And to be perfectly honest…" Loki looked outside to see a bird frozen instantly and die. "I'd rather be there than here."
"Yeah, Loki might have a point, Moll." Scratch said. "It looks way too cold out there."
"Sorry, but you two gotta get on board." Molly said. "Libby's coming over, and you know, once she's here and along with Darryl already wanting to spend the day out there, that's three against two. And majority rules. That's friendship law."
"Jeez. You always have to have your way, don't ya?" Scratch asked in an irritated tone.
"It's my most charming trait." Molly said proudly.
"This is why I hate democracy." Loki said.
DING-DONG!
At the sound of the doorbell, Molly, Loki, and Scratch headed to the front door and opened it to welcome Libby. However, much to their surprise, she was nearly covered in icicles and shivering.
"It's cold, Molly." Libby said being pulled in. "Real cold."
"Okay, so there's a slight wind chill." Molly said. She helped remove all the ice off of her friend. "But we have to spend the day outside. That's what snow days are about."
"Or maybe we just spend the day doing hygge instead?" Libby suggested.
"Hoo-goo-what-now?" Molly asked.
"Oh, it's the Danish art of being comfy-cozy." Libby explained. "Hygge is about staying warm in front of a blazing fire, snuggling under a fluffy blanket, and hanging out with your best pals while drinking hot cocoa."
"Hmm." Loki said with a slight smile. "That's actually the only thing you've ever said that sounds appealing to me."
"But what about the snow day?" Molly asked.
"Well, Libby wants to do hygge, Loki wants to do hygge, and I want to do hygge." Scratch said. "I mean, I'm not great at match, but I think we've got three for hygge versus two. And majority rules, right, Molly?"
"Two?" Libby asked.
"She's counting Darryl's vote even if he's not here." Loki explained.
"Come on, Molly." Libby said picking up a few blankets and pillows by the open fireplace. Scratch joined her. "Give hygge a chance."
"But… my snow day." Molly said pitifully.
"Look, Molly, maybe it's for the best." Loki said. "I don't know why, but something about that snow storm is making me very nervous. So let's just stay inside."
But Molly was more stubborn than anyone anticipated.
"Seriously?" Libby asked pouring a mug of cocoa for Loki. "You really cut Sif's hair as a joke?"
"I thought it'd be funny." Loki shrugged. "She punched me in the face for that, but you know, she does that every other day, so I laughed it off and took a nice, warm bath."
"Not as nice and warm as this, I bet." Scratch said.
"No. Definitely not." Loki said.
"HELLO, FRIENDS!" Geoff greeted as he suddenly appeared out of nowhere. "Now that I, Geoff—G-E-O-F-F—is here, that makes six!"
"How convenient." Scratch said rolling his eyes.
"I sure would love to go outside." Geoff said. "Yep, that would be my choice for how we, as a group, spend the day."
Molly joined up with Geoff clearly showing how she masterminded this act. "I guess with Darryl's vote, that makes this three versus three. Wow, how do we break a tie like this?"
"I'm guessing with a rule you're about to make up?" Loki asked annoyed.
"Friendship Handbook, it is." Molly said holding up her handmade book. "Here it is! Article 62. Whoever is wearing the most colors right now gets to decide." She pointed all the different colors on her clothes. "Oh. Would you look at that? It's me. And if I'm deciding the tiebreaker, I really think we should go outside."
"So let me get this straight." Loki said. "You're saying that whoever has the most colors on them gets the final say?"
"That's what it says in the Friendship Handbook."
With a mischievous smile, Loki snapped his fingers. In a puff of smoke, his green-and-black clothes gained a hundred additional colors. Molly's smug grin dropped at the sight of it.
"MAGIC DOESN'T COUNT!"
"Oh?" Loki asked looking into Molly's book. "I don't see that detail in Article 62 of the Friendship Handbook. Sorry, McGee, but it looks like hygge for all." He closed the book and dropped it on the couch. "Besides, I don't think it would've worked anyway."
Loki pointed his thumb at the fireplace blankets. Molly's face dropped again seeing Geoff join Scratch and Libby under the covers.
"Geoff! How could you?" Molly asked in shock.
"I'm sorry." Geoff apologized. "But have you tried this cocoa? I mean, my outsides and insides are warm. Now come here, buddy. Let's snuggle."
Molly was frustrated. She was determined to get her friends outside one way or another.
Later on, Molly returned to the living room with Sharon, Pete, and Grandma Nin who was watching through the video in her tablet.
"Hey, four friends." Molly greeted. "I've gathered a group of four myself and we talked about it and…"
"Talked about what?" Sharon asked.
"…We've decided we'd like to go spend the day outside doing all of my fun snow activities." Molly went on ignoring her mother. "So it looks like you guys have been outvoted! Majority rules!"
"I mean, if that's what the family really wants, who am I to say no." Loki said. "I mean, I know Sharon would love a moment of hygge after all her many tiresome jobs at Gig Pig." He approached Sharon and turned her to face the fireplace. "After all, I know how much Sharon loves sitting in front of a warm fire basking in the glow of warm company."
Sharon stared at the fireplace mesmerized by the blazing fire. "It speaks to something deep in my soul. Hygge."
"And Pete," Loki continued holding up a plate of s'mores, "A rich mix of chocolate and marshmallow. I believe you mortals call it… a s'more. I know you love them, don't you?"
"Once I have one, I want s'more!" Pete exclaimed excitedly.
"And Granma Nin, surely you wouldn't let a thousand miles keep you from being with your family in this Danish tradition of comfort." Loki said.
"You know what, of course not." Nin said. "Peter, set me closest to the fire."
Pete complied and joined the others in the blanket pile along with Sharon.
"What?!" Molly asked in disbelief. "You can't just…"
"Don't try to win this against me, Molly." Loki said. "I invented manipulation."
DING-DONG!
A curious doorbell ring echoed from the front door. When Molly opened the door, Darryl entered completely covered in ice. He shivered while speaking weakly.
"Too… cold."
"Well, that's too bad for you, Darryl." Loki said pulling the youngest McGee with the rest of the family. "And too bad for you too, Molly. Guess you lost the Darryl vote now. Guess you have no choice but to come to your senses and stay indoors like the rest of Brighton."
"NO! That's not the point of snow days!" Molly bellowed angrily. "If you're not going to come with me, then I'll go play by myself!"
"Molly, you're making me worry for you, and that's not a good look for me." Loki said. "Open your eyes and look out there! It might as well be Jotunheim out there!"
"And Jotun-I'm going to have my fun snow activities out there because that's what a sensible person would do on a snow day!" Molly retorted.
After changing into her heavy coat, boots, gloves, and earmuffs, Molly rushed outside to play her snow games on her own. While the rest of the McGee family stayed in the house having fun on their own, Molly tried desperately to have fun only to get hurt and cold at everything she could do. Still though, she was too stubborn to admit she was wrong. As she crew colder, her madness grew.
Molly:
This is awesome. This is great
I can sled. I can skate
I can have tons of fun
Just a party of one
There's no way I'm missing snow day
It's the best. It's a ball
They're so wrong. It's not that cold at all
Oh, the smile on my face
Maybe frozen in place
But there's no way I'm missing a snow day
This is awesome. Hip hip hooray
Can't feel my fingers or my toes, but that's okay
Yolo
I'm flying solo
But I'm still gonna play
There's no way I'm missing a snow day
I bet they're jealous! They're missing out
They played it safe, but look who's laughing now
HAHAHAHAHA
This is awesome. I feel no pain
I think there might be icicles inside my brain
BUT I'LL MAINTAIN MY COMPOSURE
WHILE DYING OF EXPOSURE
'CAUSE THERE'S NO WAY
I'M MISSING EVEN ONE
LITTLE SECOND OF A SNOW DAY
Molly had reached the tipping point of her madness just as the snow showered in like hail. She laughed maniacally as she rolled large snowballs and piled them up to look like three different snowmen. They were all dressed up to look like Scratch, Loki, and Libby.
"FINALLY! You guys will listen to me and I can have a real snowball fight with my pals!" Molly shouted insanely. She scooped up some snowballs and threw them at the snowmen. "Come on, guys! Hit me! It's not fun if you don't fight back!"
Molly went to the snow-Libby and moved her arms around to make her seem like she's responding. "'Don't you worry, Molly! We'll play with you! We're your best friends!'"
Molly pulled one of the stick arms from the snow-Libby like winding up for a catapult. She used it to launch a snowball, and while it went high into the air, Molly ran as far and fast as she could so she could get hit by it.
Molly picked herself up continuing to laugh. "Good throw, Libby! What an arm! Oh, we do have fun! Isn't this so great? It's the only way to spend a snow day! Right?" She looked over to where she thought her snow friends were, but all the icy wind had blinded her. She had no way of knowing which direction was left or right, and it worried her. "Guys? Hello? Scratch? Loki? Libby?"
Realization had suddenly dawned on her. She was the only one trying to play out in the freezing snow. She was cold, tired, and lost. She finally sat down and buried her face sadly behind her legs.
"I'm all alone." Molly said to herself.
Suddenly, a voice echoed through the wind, one that made Molly lift her face up.
"MOLLY! MOLLY! WHERE ARE YOU?!"
Molly looked over at the mist and saw a moving figure walking toward her. She gasped when he came to full view. It was Loki stomping through the knee-high snow.
"LOKI!" Molly cheered as she rushed over to hug him. "YOU CAME OUT TO PLAY LIKE I WANTED!"
"No! I came to get you back inside!" Loki said. "Look at you. You're miserable."
"What? No!" Molly kept denying. "…Okay, maybe. But I just don't want to spend the snow day alone and… Wait." She just noticed a small change in Loki's skin. "You're turning… blue."
"I am?" Loki asked. He looked at his arm and saw blue spots on his skin slowly growing. "Huh. How about that?"
"Is this an Asgardian thing?" Molly asked.
Loki lowered his head sadly. He sighed, "No. This is… a Frost Giant thing."
Molly looked at him surprised. "Wait. What?"
Loki let out a small breath before leading Molly to a nearby bench which was frozen solid. That's when he admitted his truth.
"Remember when I told you the Frost Giants were the ancient enemies of Asgard? Well, they were once lead by the fiercest, mightiest giant of the old generation: Laufey. And honestly… he's my real father."
"For real?" Molly asked.
"Yeah. He was against the All-Father for many years. One day, they had a final showdown which lead to Odin slaying Laufey in battle. In the aftermath, Odin found me in my crib and took me in. He raised me right beside Thor and kept my parentage a secret for as long as he could."
"Is that why you hate him?" Molly asked. Loki nodded. "But he took you in. You were just a baby, and maybe he was trying to make up for what he did."
"That's one reason he took me in along with many others. One would say he raised me to make Thor grow into a better king. One would say he wanted to use me to unite the Asgardians and Frost Giants." Loki said. "But it doesn't matter to me. What matters is that he killed my real father, stole me as a child, and lied to me for thousands of years. When I found out, I was furious. I knew that Odin shouldn't be king, that Thor shouldn't be king. But no matter what tricks or reasons I threw, they'd never listen to me. And now, I can never go back to them."
Molly was about to say something, but stopped to think about her actions earlier that day. The whole time, she forgot about the cold.
"I'm… sorry to hear that, Loki. For what it's worth, I think you'd make a good king. I mean, you did go out of your way to come and get me on your own."
"I didn't. Scratch came with me." Loki said. He pointed behind them both to where Scratch was floating.
"Yeah. I didn't want to interrupt." Scratch said. "You know, Moll, you don't always get to be the boss. Neither of you do. Sometimes, you have to do what your friends want to do."
"Even if everyone is a blind fool?" Loki asked.
"Hey, we still got a lot to learn." Molly said.
"And a good snow day shouldn't be about what you do, but who you spend it with." Scratch continued. "Wouldn't you rather be with us, Libby, and the family right now?"
Molly smiled. "You're right. It's not fair for me to always lead. From now on, I promise to really listen to what my friends want. Just as long as Loki does too."
"What?" Loki asked.
"Well, trying to force yourself to be the leader never really works out for you, doesn't it?" Molly asked. "It's how you died in the first place, you didn't listen to Thor when he tried to warn you."
Loki wanted to argue, but he stopped himself. "I… Well… I guess… I can at least consider them."
"Great." Scratch said. "Now, let's get out of this cold before we become icicles."
After returning home, Molly finally embraced her loved ones in front of the campfire.
"Guys, I owe you all an apology." She said. "I should've been a better friend and listened to what you wanted to do."
"Oh, hoog it out, Molly." Libby chuckled.
Molly proceeded to give her friends and family a big hug. Even Loki joined in, albeit hesitantly. When he did, the last blue spot on his skin had changed back to its warm color.
"Looks like your blueness is gone, Loki." Scratch said.
"Looks that way, huh?" Loki asked looking at his skin. "Weird though. Normally, my skin would only act like that when exposed to Frost Giant magic. Guess it's colder than I thought."
"Yeah. It does look that way, doesn't it?" Molly asked looking out the window. "How did I not see that before?"
It was mostly quiet out in the freezing plains of Brighton Square. At first, it was just the heavy wind blowing across carrying the snowflakes. Then, it was drowned out by the heavy footprints when a giant, blue foot stomped across the square.
The foot lead up to a gigantic, blue monster who looked human. He had on dark-green armor and a pair of long horns on his forehead similar to Loki. In fact, his hair matched an adult Loki.
The giant, blue Loki growled in frustration before being confronted by another figure standing in the snow before her. Like him, he also looked like an adult Loki, only much more human. He looked exactly like Loki did before he died, only with a black-and-green suit, a gold horn crown, and a red-white-and-blue button pin on his collar that read "LOKI FOR PRESIDENT".
"What do you think you're doing?" the Loki lookalike asked. "You're not supposed to be outside just yet!"
"This is the right opportunity and you know it!" snarled the giant, blue Loki. "The Core Loki is here in this pitiful town and we need to find him!"
"And we will, but not just yet." Said the Loki with the button pin. "I have a plan in motion, and if he sees us before we are ready, we risk compromising everything to the Asgardians. And don't forget, we don't have all the Loki's just yet. We've still got a couple more to go. So return to the hideout. Your mere presence is making this snow more Jotunheim-level, and that's going to draw in the wrong kind of attention."
The giant Loki growled before turning his back. He stomped away and disappeared into the mist. As he left, the Loki with the button pin sighed.
"Hard to believe he and I are the same. Well, time to get back to work. Enjoy your vacation, Core Loki, because soon, we will find you. And together, we'll bring the Nine Realms to their knees."
