Chapter 9: Running Red
~Red~
I was across the river and in the trees before the sound of the window shattering ended. Running and weaving between trees not bothering to keep my steps quiet I reached a speed of 85mph any faster I would be bumping into the densely packed trees.
I could tell someone was following me but not who. Running calms me down and I head for an area where the trees are spread out more, I'll be able to increase my speed. Getting close to the area I slow and quiet my steps, breathing, and heart rate.
Going completely silent, I slipped into the highest branch of the trees and waited. I watched Edythe come into view, she was looking around the trees.
Run from her was not what I wanted but getting surrounded by a powerful group of gifted Vampires was something that would take me a while to get used to.
I lay down on the thick branch to watch the Vampire that I'm drawn to and relationships between mortal and immortal races are not that uncommon.
Watching Edythe I hear something heading towards the clearing Edythe is standing in. closing my eyes I concentrated on my sense of smell and hearing to identify the manual. From the sound of the footstep, it was on all fours and it smelled of mixed blood and wolf. This meant they are a shapeshifter and not a native wolf.
I did not recognize their scent and since there are very few shapeshifters wolfs living around Forks or in the Olympic Forrest this can not be good.
Opening my eyes I looked at Edythe, That is when I recognized this place it was the one from my vision or Edythe getting attacked by the black wolf.
Quickly I head down the tree and start for Edythe. If I was standing next to her I'll be able to mask her scent or stop the young wolf with my Alpha command.
The wolf was getting closer its loud footsteps were heading for Edythe, she turned towards it as I hit the ground with a loud *Thud* my weight cracking the large root at the base of the tree. Extending my foreclaws into the root I landed on launching myself forward, shifting my weight to dodge trees to get to her.
The black wolf was getting close, so I thought of a plan as fast as I could. Without being able to see Edythe's current future, I had to use what I saw on Friday.
The all black wolf that was larger than my full wolf form sprang from the trees at Edythe. Accelerating to nearly 100mph I shove Edythe with my right shoulder out of the way. It felt like I slammed the shoulder into a solid iron door and with her super strength and durability, she only got pushed ten feet to the side, a human would have flown the fifty feet and slammed into a tree.
Pain shot through my left shoulder as the black wolf sank his teeth deep into me, his long claws dragged down my back, and blood was pouring onto the ground.
Howling I twisted away from him, he ripped a large chunk of flesh off my shoulder, teeth raking my bones. His claw slid out of my hide and I began to stagger a little from the pain.
My blood was making a hissing sound as it hit the ground and with how cold it is, the air around me froze the heat from my body creating light fog.
When I sustain a severe injury like the one on my shoulder, my blood boils up to 130°F to kill off any foreign bacteria, and the blood because acetic, eating through anything not part of my DNA.
I can not only repair my body but also regenerate missing parts, but shifting form when injured is excruciating.
The side of my back was not healing as my body was rapidly replacing the artery the black wolf tore out of my shoulder.
My left front leg was numb and pain kept shooting from my shoulder. The black wolf went to lunge at Edythe who was getting back on her feet. I howled in pain as I moved to block the other wolf from Edythe.
"(Red) you need to stop, this is not your land and you can not just attack someone." "(Sam) That thing is a monster and must be destroyed. You are weak and can not stop me from killing it."
"(Red) you are wrong Sam I can stop you from hurting her and you are the monster here, I do not want to hurt you or force you to do what I say but I will."
As I was talking to the black wolf Edythe came up to me, she reached out to touch me but I leaned away from her touch.
I spoke to her only "(Red) Edythe, you can not touch my blood it will burn your skin and clothing."
I could not look at her, I had to keep my eyes on the larger black wolf. "(Sam) you say she is not a monster but you won't let her get near you." saying this he took a step towards us showing his teeth and growling deeply.
I growled back taking a step, still shielding Edythe behind me. It's been 2 minutes and my artery and smaller blood vessels have regenerated, the nerves and first layer of muscle fibers have started regenerating.
I was standing twenty feet from the black wolf when his body gave off the signal that he was going to spring at me. In my current state, it would be hard to protect Edythe and fight him off.
Blood was still flowing from my back. It will not start healing until my muscle fibers have regrown, this will take several more minutes so I spoke to the black wolf with my Grand Alpha authority.
"(Alpha Red) SAM ULEY, your attempt to break the supernatural decree set by the other race has forced my claws. As the Grand Alpha Wolf Guardian I restricted your wolf form to your tribal tarator of La Push or outside the tarator I control. You will not be able to enter or shift into your wolf in my tarator. Now return to La Push that is an order."
After speaking in my Alpha voice I howled so loudly that the black wolf's ears rotated back and he staggered backward. He continued to back up and try to fight my command but it was no use.
"(Sam) you can't do this Jacob Black is my pack Alpha. We must kill the monsters, not protect them.
I gave him a wolf smile "(Alpha Red) Thanks for reminding me, Sam Uley when Jacob Black changes and becomes your Alpha he can not overrule this order alone. You will need both of us to remove it."
His wolf eyes got bigger as he backed away, fearing I would give him more commands, he turned and ran in the direction of La Push.
I was listening to the wolf heading deeper into the forest towards La Push when Edythe stepped in front of me, with a hurt and angry expression "why did you do that, you could have jumped him instead of pushing me and getting hurt." After saying this she moved towards me, my blood was spread all over the ground.
"(Red) Wait do not step closer" Edythe ignored me and was about to step in a puddle of my blood. I instantly stepped over the puddle and pressed the top of my wolf head into her chest, stopping her movement.
Edythe ran her hand from the bottom of my muzzle to my ear tips, luckily my head did not have my blood coating it, the blood had run down my side and back.
"(Red) I did it to protect you, he may be a fourth level descendant Werewolf he still could have killed you."
closing my eyes I breathed in her scent, she was cold from the outside air, without her own body heat, she would feel like the temperature around her.
Edythe lifted my head and I felt her lips on my wolf mouth, then she ran her hand down my side, I still had my eyes closed and my heart was pounding.
"Awww" I snapped my eyes open, Edythe stepped back from me holding out her hands which were covered in my blood.
"(Red) Shit, Edythe I told you not to touch my blood, hold your hand next to each other, palms facing me. Now do not move them or panic.
She did what I said and held her hands out towards me. I could see the pain in her eyes as my blood was eating the unknown bacteria, which happened to be Edythe's hands. I stepped up to her and opened my mouth wide, she got more panicked.
"What are you doing?" she asked but stayed still.
"(Red) I'm going to neutralize the blood before it eats through your hands, remember do not move, if I get you with my fangs it will not be pleasant.
Retracting my fangs as much as I could, I placed my mouth around her hands then closed it. Once my mouth was closed, I started licking the blood off her hands. Using my tongue to clean her hands, my saliva will stop the blood.
I released Edythe's hands and lean back to look into her face. She turned her hands over to look them over. They were smooth and pail with no damage as her healing had fixed them as soon as the blood was removed.
"(Red) Edythe, if you would follow me there is a wide section of the creek not far from here. My wounds have stopped bleeding and I would like to wash the blood from my fur. Then I will take you back to your family and after that, I need to have a meeting with the Quileute tribe. When I'm done I will be going hunting, then home for a shower."
Edythe did not say anything but followed me to the creek. It was freezing but I dove under and rolled under the water to rinse out the blood. My blood will dilute in the water and will no longer be dangerous to other creatures.
After 5 minutes of rinsing off, I got out of the creek, covered in freezing water and the cold air, I shivered. I do not feel the cold normally but it is different when I'm soaked.
On the riverbank, Edythe looked sad with her golden eyes staring at me as I walked up to her.
"(Red) Edythe, are you ok, do your hands hurt from the blood. I see they have healed, you have not said anything since I removed the blood."
I was feet from her when she opened her mouth. "Do you have to leave? Will I see you again?" After her last question, she stepped forward and wrapped her arms around my neck, then presented her head into my collar. I shiver from her cold touch, she tried to pull away but I put my head on top of hers.
"(Red) yes. I have to go talk to them, remind them that they have their rules, I have mine and the Supernatural community have theirs. You will see me again, not tonight or tomorrow. I will be keeping watch over you and your family."
She did not move but spoke. "Ok, but why would you be watching us?"
I did not want to tell her that the human she had classes with is me. So I lied a little.
"(Red) I heard that you showed up to the first day of school with black hungry eyes and you tried to eat some kid in class. Before you ask I suggested to Mr. Harrison to get you to drink some of that drink he makes for me sometimes, if you still had the black eyes. I watched you get into the truck and start drinking something from a cup. Once I saw your eyes shine gold I left."
"You told Jason what I am?" Edythe sounded angry "now I have to kill or turn him. I could help but start to bark, laugh. "What are you laughing about? I have to hurt a boy I just met." "[and may have feelings for.]" Edythe said the last part as a whisper but I could hear it just fine.
"(Red) You forget that this area is claimed by Werewolves and is subject to our rule, not any of the other races. If the Volturi ever tried to overstep this we would invade Volterra, Italy and shut down their tourist trap. The Volturi kings fear one individual more than the Dragon Guardian and myself is the Fae's sword Champion. She would have cut all the members of the Volturi down if we had not convinced her that it was better to have the Vampires kings enforce the decree instead of someone new."
"Ok so everyone in the territory is protected." Edythe still had her cold body pressed against me with her legs bent a bit so her head would fit under my wolf neck.
I was starting to warm up from the dip in the creek but where she touched was still cold. Thinking about shifting so I could hold Edythe in my arm, I heard light footsteps coming this way. listening more carefully and tuning out the rush of the water from the greek.
"I do not know for sure Edward, you can read what I have seen. Edythe pops back into my visions near a creek around here. She is alone, but that could be that I can not see the wolf in my vision." Alice's ringing voice comes from far off.
Edward's voice came next. "You, are hiding something from me about the reason you can not see him in your visions and you have not told us what that boy at school wanted to talk to you about."
"I told you he wanted to talk to me about Edythe and tell me that the Wolf Guardian would be stopping by to talk to all of us about our stay in Forks. That is why I stop Edythe and the rest of you from going out."
Their voices and footsteps were much closer when Edward replied. "I can tell some of that is trustful with something left out. Every time you tell a half truth you start repeating a line from a song."
I raised my right front paw and gently pushed Edythe away. "(Red) Your siblings are coming this way and I do not think it would be a good idea for them to see us like this. I will wait by the trees once they are with you, I will be heading to La Push. Remember you can not follow me, the agreement your father made prevents his family from entering their territory even with my influence."
Before Edythe could reply I leaned in and nuzzle her on the cheek, then leaped backwards over the wide section of the creek.
Watching her fluster and press her hand to her cheek from a spot behind a tree. It was still light out so I shifted my fur to its dark red brown and my eyes to dark Indigo. The humans still refer to me as the shadow wolf because I could, to them blend in so well that I become the darkness.
Alice, Edward, and Jasper come out of the forest and surround Edythe asking her questions. Alice stared off "Are you ok after you ran out of the house after the wolf. I had a vision of you getting attacked by something then you disappear from my sight until I see you here."
I turned and left before I could hear what Edythe was going to tell her sister.
