Lloyd POV: We all smiled as Kai and Nya hugged each other, and it felt good to have him back. But then Kai cringed in pain and held his chest, and he coughed a little. Nya looked at him in concern.
I immediately walked over and said, "We need to get him medical attention, now."
Zane, who took over from Nya, and I helped him up as he continued to gasp from the pain. He was bleeding again from his lacerations, plus in the better lighting his bruises were more obvious.
"Borg Tower is the closest place we can go." Zane said, seeing this too.
"Why? Shouldn't we go to a hospital?" Jay asked, opening the doors with Cole.
"They just finished installing a medical bay around a week ago, and Mr. Borg said we're allowed to use it when we need to." He stated.
Without another word we headed there immediately and tried to be careful with Kai, who was barely staying awake. We decided to use my vehicle and Zane got in with us and the others followed in suit. We used the back entrance and the secondary elevator up to the newly redesigned floor Zane told us about. The others let us go up first, in order to not crowd the elevator. Mr. Borg was at the reception desk when we got there, and froze when he saw Kai.
"Is Kai okay?!" he asked, coming up to us.
"Once he gets treatment. Zan said to have a new medical bay?" I asked quickly, as the others came up after us.
"Of course, this way." he said, quickly leading us to another room down the hall.
The room was a large advanced space with a few medical cots with large screens next to them as well as scanners. Other equipment and medical supplies were carefully placed around the room.
"You can set him here." Borg said, gesturing to the closest cot.
Kai groaned painfully as we helped him up. I backed up to the others once he was on and Borg started the scanner. A pale blue line ran over him as Zane walked over to Borg.
"My initial scan showed several lacerations and broken bones, as well as a through-in-through wound on the chest." Zane informed him.
Jay and Cole flinched when they heard that, which reminded me that we didn't tell them about Kai's injuries.
The scanner finished and Borg and Zane looked over the result, and the expression went stiff.
"What's wrong?" Nya asked, clearly not liking their silence.
"Well, other than the chest wound, there isn't anything incredibly serious. However, there are a lot of injuries." Zane said, rubbing his hands.
"Oh…'' Nya said quietly.
''Sis, it's okay… I'll be fine.'' Kai said, trying to sit up. But cringed in pain as a result.
She looked at him and said, ''Not for a while at least.''
''Fair… enough.'' he responded, holding his chest again.
''First things first, we need to clean the open wounds. Then we can worry about the broken bones. I'll get the pain meds ready." Borg said, going over to them.
"I'll get the IV started for the internal bleeding." Zane said.
"Internal bleeding?!" Jay nearly screamed.
"It's only a little, and can easily be taken care of." Zane answered calmly, pushing it in Kai's arm.
Jay laughed nervously and I said, "Is there anything we can do to help?"
"You can help to get his uniform off so we can get a better look at the chest wound. Cole, you know how to do stitches, you can start with his right leg." Cole and I nodded and we walked over.
"What about us?" Nya asked, going up to him.
"Perhaps you can call the others. They need to know, then help bandage Kai once we finish."
She opened her mouth, but then just nodded. She probably wanted to stay with her brother, but someone needed to call Sensei and the others.
"I have to go as well, but I'll let the staff know you're in here and you're not to be distributed." Borg said, and left after we thanked him.
Jay went with her and we got to work. Cole started to clean the needle as I carefully peeled the uniform off. Kai gasped in pain as I did around the wound area, but I had to keep going. Once it was off I could see that he made makeshift bandages to slow the bleeding, but they were a deep shade of red and the blood started to drip. I undid the bandages and froze.
The wound was at least three inches long and stretched diagonally near his shoulder area. It was a very deep shade of red from how it went through and through and blood started to flow of blood again. Kai breathed heavily from the pain, his head turned away.
"I know it hurts, but just bear with it. It's almost over." I whispered to him.
The wound was too big to stitch together and with how irritated it looked it was possible that it was going to get infected soon. I carefully placed disinfected cream on the wound then placed new, fresh, bandages. Kai's breathing steadied as the painkillers finally kicked in and he coughed quietly.
"How's the pain now?" Cole asked, as he finished the stitches on his leg.
"Better…" Kai answered, his exhaustion was now clear on face.
"That's good, but you should stay awake for now." He said, getting started on his right arm.
"I know…" Kai smiled slightly, then started coughing a lot more.
Cole and I held him so he wouldn't open his injuries, and Zane pulled over an oxygen tank and got a mask on. Once he got his coughing under control he laid back with his eyes closed.
"Your broken ribs are causing pressure on your lungs, and the internal bleeding isn't helping." Zane said, adjusting the mask so it would stay on.
"Kinda figured." Kai said, opening his eyes.
"Kai… what did you do…?" Cole whispered, grabbing our attention.
I was confused until I looked at his arm. The laceration on his arm was closed by what looked like… burns.
"Did you cauterize the wound?!" Zane said, taking over from Cole and holding his arm.
"...it was bleeding bad during a chase with some of those guys. I couldn't afford to get found at the time." Kai said, looking at the wound.
"Cauterizing a wound like this is a bad idea. It can seal in bacteria and other things. As well as cause scarring internally and externally." Zane sounded worried.
"I was careful, plus that's the only injury I had to do that to." He responded, looking up to him.
Zane sighed and said, "I can understand if you had to, and it does look like it's not terribly damaged."
"But we're still gonna have to reopen the wound, right?" I asked, grabbing some loose clothes.
"Yeah, I can do that. Cole, can you look over the other internal injuries?" Zane asked, pulling up the seat.
"Alright." he answered, walking over to the computer.
I set the clothes on the table except the shirt, and helped Kai since he definitely couldn't get it over his head. He gasped and held his breath until we got it on. He let it all out and moaned loudly.
"How were you fighting in this condition? You were winning too." I had to ask.
"Determination, and mostly adrenaline." he laughed as he said that.
"Well, now you can rest, because you're certainly not fighting anytime soon." Zan stated, as he finished cleaning his arm.
Kai flinched from the pain and said, "The one time I don't mind being on the sidelines."
Zane quickly and carefully got his arm stitched up as I set his hand in a splint. Cole looked over his scans and a blank face.
"That should be everything that requires stitches and bandages." Zane said as he finished.
"What about broken bones?" I asked, helping Kai change.
"From what these scans say, he doesn't have a concussion. But he does have a couple broken ribs and wrist. Nothing else other than that." Cole said.
"He'll need constant cleaning and bandage changing in order to avoid infections, plenty of fluids and nutrition to regain his strength, we'll need to keep an eye on the internal bleeding, and lots of rest too." Zane stated.
"But he can sleep since there isn't a concussion." I asked.
"Yes." He answered.
"Yay." Kai said, as he made a slight yawn.
"With that said, let's help you lay back and get some." Cole said, walking back over.
After getting him settled and grabbing a blanket Kai started snoring almost immediately after he closed his eyes.
We left the room, dimming the light on the way out, but I was still concerned.
"How bad was the bleeding? And where was he bleeding" I asked, facing Zane as we stood outside the room.
"He had damaged blood vessels around his ribs, however it wasn't severe and the IV will fix it." he answered.
"It was probably the broken ribs that caused that." Cole said, thinking about it.
"That is very likely."
"How long will it take him to recover?" I asked, thinking about how much we need him.
"Kai's always been a fast healer, but with these injuries… I say it'll probably be at least a couple of months before he will recover."
Zane answered, looking at the door.
"That'll work. And he'll have us too." Cole said, patting my back.
"Of course." That I was confident about.
